We exhibit an extension of the category of class two nilpotent groups. It has the same objects but, unlike the latter, its morphisms are closed under pointwise addition of maps. At the same time the class of its morphisms is much smaller than the class of all maps. In fact, the morphisms are quadratic maps of very special kind. It is indicated that classification of various class two nilpotent groups up to isomorphism in this larger category can give interesting results.
This research was motivated by universal algebraic geometry. One of the central questions of universal algebraic geometry is: when two algebras have the same algebraic geometry? For answer of this question (see [Pl],[Ts]) we must consider the variety, to which our algebras belongs, the category K of all finitely generated free algebras of our variety and research how the group of all the automorphisms of this category AutK are different from the group of the all inner automorphisms of this category InnK. An automorphism of the category is called inner, if it is isomorphic as functor to the ide…
In the first part, we prove that the dominion (in the sense of Isbell) of a subgroup of a finitely generated nilpotent group is trivial in the category of all nilpotent groups. In the second part, we show that the dominion of a subgroup of a finitely generated nilpotent group of class two is trivial in the category of all metabelian nilpotent groups.
In this paper, we are going to look at the $c$-nilpotent multiplier of a group $G$, ${\cal N}_cM(G)$, as a functor from the category of all groups, ${\cal G}roup$, to the category of all abelian groups, ${\cal A}b$, and focusing on some functional properties of it. In fact, by using some results of the first author and others and finding an explicit formula for the $c$-nilpotent multiplier of a finitely generated abelian group, we try to concentrate on the commutativity of the above functor with the two famous functors Ext and Tor.
We investigate the concept of dominion (in the sense of Isbell) in several varieties of nilpotent groups. We obtain a full description of dominions in the variety of nilpotent groups of class at most two. Then we look at the behavior of dominions of subgroups of groups in ${\cal N}_2$ when taken in the context of ${\cal N}_c$ with $c>2$. Finally we establish the existence of nontrivial dominions in the category of all nilpotent groups.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for weak and strong embeddability of amalgams in each subvariety of the category of all nilpotent groups of class at most two; this generalizes B. Maier's result for the latter class. We also discuss dominions (in the sense of Isbell), and characterize the weak, strong, and special amalgamation bases for each subvariety, contrasting the resulting classes with one another.
The free nilpotent group $G_{m,n}$ of class $m$ and rank $n$ is the free object on $n$ generators in the category of nilpotent groups of class at most $m$. We show that $G_{m,n}$ can be recovered from its reduced group $C^*$-algebra, in the sense that if $H$ is any group such that $C^*_r(H)$ is isomorphic to $C^*_r(G_{m,n})$, then $H$ must be isomorphic to $G_{m,n}$.

We study a correspondence associating to each subshift $\mathcal X$ of $A^{\mathbb Z}$ a subcategory of the Karoubi envelope of the free profinite semigroup generated by $A$. The objects of this category are the idempotents in the mirage of $\mathcal X$, that is, in the set of pseudowords whose finite factors are blocks of $\mathcal X$. The natural equivalence class of the category is shown to be invariant under flow equivalence. As a corollary of our proof, we deduce the flow invariance of the profinite group that Almeida associated to each irreducible subshift. We also show, in a functorial …
In this paper we introduce the Schützenberger category $\mathbb D(S)$ of a semigroup $S$. It stands in relation to the Karoubi envelope (or Cauchy completion) of $S$ in the same way that Schützenberger groups do to maximal subgroups and that the local divisors of Diekert do to the local monoids $eSe$ of $S$ with $e\in E(S)$. In particular, the objects of $\mathbb D(S)$ are the elements of $S$, two objects of $\mathbb D(S)$ are isomorphic if and only if the corresponding semigroup elements are $\mathscr D$-equivalent, the endomorphism monoid at $s$ is the local divisor in the sense of Diekert a…

To every group $G$ we associate a linear monoidal category $\mathcal{P}\mathit{ar}(G)$ that we call a group partition category. We give explicit bases for the morphism spaces and also an efficient presentation of the category in terms of generators and relations. We then define an embedding of $\mathcal{P}\mathit{ar}(G)$ into the group Heisenberg category associated to $G$. This embedding intertwines the natural actions of both categories on modules for wreath products of $G$. Finally, we prove that the additive Karoubi envelope of $\mathcal{P}\mathit{ar}(G)$ is equivalent to a wreath product …
In universal algebraic geometry the category of the finite generated free algebras of some fixed variety of algebras and the quotient group A/Y are very important. Here A is a group of all automorphisms of this category and Y is a group of all inner automorphisms of this category. In the varieties of all the groups, all the abelian groups (see B. Plotkin and G. Zhitomirski, 2006), all the nilpotent groups of the class no more then n (see A. Tsurkov, 2007) the group A/Y is trivial. B. Plotkin posed a question: "Is there a subvariety of the variety of all the groups, such that the group A/Y in t…
Lazard correspondence provides an isomorphism of categories between finitely generated nilpotent pro-$p$ groups of nilpotency class smaller than $p$ and finitely generated nilpotent $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Lie algebras of nilpotency class smaller than $p$. Denote by $H_{Gr}^i$ and $H_{Lie}^i$ the group cohomology functors and the Lie cohomology functors respectively. The aim of this paper is to show that for $i=0$, $1$ and $1$, and for a given category of modules the cohomology functors $H_{Gr}^i\circ \textbf{exp}$ and $H^i_{Lie}$ are naturally equivalent. A similar result is proven for $i=3$ and the r…
We study H^*(P), the mod p cohomology of a finite p--group P, viewed as an Out(P)--module. In particular, we study the conjecture, first considered by Martino and Priddy, that, if e_S in Z/p[Out(P)] is a primitive idempotent associated to an irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module S, then the Krull dimension of e_SH^*(P) equals the rank of P. The rank is an upper bound by Quillen's work, and the conjecture can be viewed as the statement that every irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module occurs as a composition factor in H^*(P) with similar frequency. In summary, our results are as follows. A strong form of th…
In this article we introduce and study uniform and non-uniform approximate lattices in locally compact second countable (lcsc) groups. These are approximate subgroups (in the sense of Tao) which simultaneously generalize lattices in lcsc group and mathematical quasi-crystals (a.k.a. Meyer sets) in lcsc abelian groups. We show that envelopes of strong approximate lattices are unimodular, and that approximate lattices in nilpotent groups are uniform. We also establish several results relating properties of approximate lattices and their envelopes. For example, we prove a version of the Milnor-Sc…
