This research was motivated by universal algebraic geometry. One of the central questions of universal algebraic geometry is: when two algebras have the same algebraic geometry? For answer of this question (see [Pl],[Ts]) we must consider the variety, to which our algebras belongs, the category K of all finitely generated free algebras of our variety and research how the group of all the automorphisms of this category AutK are different from the group of the all inner automorphisms of this category InnK. An automorphism of the category is called inner, if it is isomorphic as functor to the identity automorphism. In the case when we consider a variety of all groups we have the classical results which let us resolve this problem by an indirect way. In [DF] proved that for every free group F the group Aut(AutF) coincides with the group Inn(AutF), from this result in [Fo] was concluded that Aut(EndF)=Inn(EndF) and from this fact by theorem of reduction [BPP] it can be concluded that AutK=InnK. In the case of nilpotent group by [Ks] we have, that if the number of generators of the free nilpotent class d group NF are bigger enough than d, then Aut(AutNF)=Inn(AutNF). But we have no description of Aut(EndNF) and so can not use the theorem of reduction. In this paper the method of verbal operations is used. This method was established in [PZ]. In [PZ] by this method was very easily proved that AutK=InnK in the case of free groups and in the case of free abelian groups. In this paper we will prove, by this method, that AutK=InnK free nilpotent groups of arbitrary fixed class of nilpotency.
Let $p$ be a prime and $\mathcal{F}$ be a saturated fusion system over a finite $p$-group $P$. The fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ is said to be nilpotent if $\mathcal{F}=\mathcal{F}_{P}(P)$. We provide new criteria for a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$ to be nilpotent, which may be viewed as extending the Glauberman-Thompson $p$-nilpotency criterion to fusion systems.
Let $G$ be a finite group with the property that if $a,b$ are powers of $δ_1^*$-commutators such that $(|a|,|b|)=1$, then $|ab|=|a||b|$. We show that $γ_{\infty}(G)$ is nilpotent.
Nilpotent semigroups in the sense of Mal'cev are defined by semigroup identities. Finite nilpotent semigroups constitute a pseudovariety, $\mathsf{MN}$, which has finite rank. The semigroup identities that define nilpotent semigroups, lead us to define strongly Mal'cev nilpotent semigroups. Finite strongly Mal'cev nilpotent semigroups constitute a non-finite rank pseudovariety, $\mathsf{SMN}$. The pseudovariety $\mathsf{SMN}$ is strictly contained in the pseudovariety $\mathsf{MN}$ but all finite nilpotent groups are in $\mathsf{SMN}$. We show that the pseudovariety $\mathsf{MN}$ is the inters…
The notion of bounded FC-nilpotent group is introduced and it is shown that any such group is nilpotent-by-finite, generalizing a result of Neumann on bounded FC-groups.
Suppose that a metacyclic Frobenius group $FH$, with kernel $F$ and complement $H$, acts by automorphisms on a finite group $G$, in such a way that $C_G(F)$ is trivial and $C_G(H)$ is nilpotent. It is known that $G$ is nilpotent and its nilpotency class can be bounded in terms of $|H|$ and the nilpotency class of $C_G(H)$. Until now, it was not clear whether the bound could be made independent of the order of $H$. In this article, we construct a family $\mathfrak{G}$ of finite nilpotent groups, of unbounded nilpotency class. Each group in $\mathfrak{G}$ admits a metacyclic Frobenius group of a…
We consider ordered tuples in finite groups generating nilpotent subgroups. Given an integer $q$ we consider the poset of nilpotent subgroups of class less than $q$ and its corresponding coset poset. These posets give rise to a family of finite Dirichlet series parametrized by the nilpotency class of the subgroups, which in turn reflect probabilistic and topological invariants determined by these subgroups. Connections of these series to filtrations of classifying spaces of a group are discussed.
Let G be a finite group, p a fixed prime and P a Sylow p-subgroup of G. In this short note we prove that if p is odd, G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order p. For the case p=2, we show that G is p-nilpotent if and only if P controls fusion of cyclic groups of order 2 and 4.
We prove that Knapsack problem (KP) is undecidable for any group of nilpotency class two if the number of generators (without torsion) of the derived subgroup is at least 322. This result together with the fact that if KP is undecidable for a subgroup then it undecidable for the whole group allows us extend our result to certain classes of polycyclic groups, linear groups and nilpotent groups of higher nilpotency class.
We study nilpotency in the context of exact Mal'tsev categories taking central extensions as the primitive notion. This yields a nilpotency tower which is analysed from the perspective of Goodwillie's functor calculus. We show in particular that the reflection into the subcategory of $n$-nilpotent objects is the universal endofunctor of degree $n$ if and only if every $n$-nilpotent object is $n$-folded. In the special context of a semi-abelian category, an object is $n$-folded precisely when its Higgins commutator of length $n+1$ vanishes.
Let $G$ be a finite group admitting a coprime automorphism $α$. Let $J_G(α)$ denote the set of all commutators $[x,α]$, where $x$ belongs to an $α$-invariant Sylow subgroup of $G$. We show that $[G,α]$ is soluble or nilpotent if and only if any subgroup generated by a pair of elements of coprime orders from the set $J_G(α)$ is soluble or nilpotent, respectively.
It is shown that finite groups in which the order of the product of every pair of elements of co-prime order is the product of the orders, is nilpotent.
It is proved that the derived subgroup of a finite group is nilpotent if and only if $|ab|\ge |a||b|$ for all primary commutators $a$ and $b$ of coprime orders.
A group $G$ has the $R_{\infty}$--property if the number $R(φ)$ of twisted conjugacy classes is infinite for any automorphism $φ$ of $G$. For such a group $G$, the $R_{\infty}$--nilpotency index is the least integer $c$ such that $G/γ_{c+1}(G)$ still has the $R_\infty$--property. In this paper, we determine the $R_{\infty}$--nilpotency degree of all Baumslag--Solitar groups.
In this work we discuss whether the non-commuting graph of a finite group can determine its nilpotency. More precisely, Abdollahi, Akbari and Maimani conjectured that if $G$ and $H$ are finite groups with isomorphic non-commuting graphs and $G$ is nilpotent, then $H$ must be nilpotent as well (Conjecture 2). We pose a new conjecture (Conjecture 3) that, together with the assumption $|Z(G)|\geq|Z(H)|$, implies Conjecture 2 and we prove it for groups in which all centralizers of non-central elements are abelian.
In this thesis I study the automorphism tower of free nilpotent groups. Our main tool in studying the automorphism tower is to embed every group as a lattice in some Lie group. Using known rigidity results the automorphism group of the discrete group can be embedded into the automorphism group of the Lie group. This allows me to lift the description of the derivation tower of the free nilpotent Lie algebra to obtain information about the automorphism tower of the free nilpotent group. The main result in this thesis states that the automorphism tower of the free nilpotent group $Γ(n,d)$ on $n$ …
Let $w$ be a word in $k$ variables. For a finite nilpotent group $G$, a conjecture of Amit states that $N_w(1) \ge |G|^{k-1}$, where $N_w(1)$ is the number of $k$-tuples $(g_1,...,g_k)\in G^{(k)}$ such that $w(g_1,...,g_k)=1$. Currently, this conjecture is known to be true for groups of nilpotency class 2. Here we consider a generalized version of Amit's conjecture, and prove that $N_w(g) \ge |G|^{k-2}$, where $g$ is a $w$-value in $G$, for finite groups $G$ of odd order and nilpotency class 2. If $w$ is a word in two variables, we further show that $N_w(g) \ge |G|$, where $g$ is a $w$-value i…
We say a group $G$ has property $R_\infty$ if the number $R(φ)$ of twisted conjugacy classes is infinite for every automorphism $φ$ of $G$. For such groups, the $R_\infty$-nilpotency degree is the least integer $c$ such that $G/γ_{c+1}(G)$ has property $R_\infty$. In this work, we compute the $R_\infty$-nilpotency degree of all Generalized Solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups $Γ_n$. Moreover, we compute the lower central series of $Γ_n$, write the nilpotent quotients $Γ_{n,c}=Γ_n/γ_{c+1}(Γ_n)$ as semidirect products of finitely generated abelian groups and classify which integer invertible matrice…
We determine right nilpotency of braces of cardinality $p^4$. If a brace of cardinality $p^4$ has an abelian multiplicative group, then it is left and right nilpotent, so we only consider braces with non-abelian multiplicative groups. We show right nilpotency in all cases using the sufficient condition of $A\ast c=0$ for some central element $c$ of a brace $A$.
We use a constructive method to obtain all but finitely many p-local representation zeta functions of a family Mn of finitely generated nilpotent groups with maximal nilpotency class. For representation dimensions coprime to all primes p < n, we construct all irreducible representations of Mn by defining a standard form for the matrices of these representations and, after taking into account twisting and isomorphism, count these twist isoclasses to obtain our p-local zeta functions.

Let $A$ be an elementary abelian group of order $p^{k}$ with $k\geq 3$ acting on a finite $p'$-group $G$. The following results are proved. If $γ_{k-2}(C_{G}(a))$ is nilpotent of class at most $c$ for any $a\in A^{#}$, then $γ_{k-2}(G)$ is nilpotent and has $\{c,k,p\}$-bounded nilpotency class. If, for some integer $d$ such that $2^{d}+2\leq k$, the $d$th derived group of $C_{G}(a)$ is nilpotent of class at most $c$ for any $a\in A^{#}$, then the $d$th derived group $G^{(d)}$ is nilpotent and has $\{c,k,p\}$-bounded nilpotency class. Earlier this was known only in the case where $k\leq 4$.
We investigate the rank of pseudovarieties defined by several of the variants of nilpotency conditions for semigroups in the sense of Mal'cev. For several of them, we provide finite bases of pseudoidentities. We also show that the Neumann-Taylor variant does not have finite rank.
Let K be a field of positive characteristic p and KG the group algebra of a group G. It is known that, if KG is Lie nilpotent, then its upper (or lower) Lie nilpotency index is at most |G'|+1, where |G'| is the order of the commutator subgroup. Previously we determined the groups G for which the upper/lower nilpotency index is maximal or the upper nilpotency index is `almost maximal' (that is, of the next highest possible value, namely |G'|-p +2). Here we determine the groups for which the lower nilpotency index is `almost maximal'.
Given two positive integers n and c, we determine an upper bound, as a function of n and c, for the maximum order of a finite nilpotent transitive group of degree n and nilpotency class at most c.
In this short note, we provide an inequality that holds in any finite group, only involving the orders of the elements; we prove that equality holds if and only if the group is nilpotent.
We refer to the set of the orders of elements of a finite group as its spectrum and say that groups are isospectral if their spectra coincide. We prove that with the only specific exception the solvable radical of a nonsolvable finite group isospectral to a finite simple group is nilpotent.
A loop is automorphic if its inner mappings are automorphisms. Using so-called associated operations, we show that every commutative automorphic loop of odd prime power order is centrally nilpotent. Starting with anisotropic planes in the vector space of $2\times 2$ matrices over the field of prime order $p$, we construct a family of automorphic loops of order $p^3$ with trivial center.
Denote the sum of element orders in a finite group $G$ by $ψ(G)$ and let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$. In this paper, we prove that if $|G|=n$ and $ψ(G)>\frac{13}{21}\,ψ(C_n)$, then $G$ is nilpotent. Moreover, we have $ψ(G)=\frac{13}{21}\,ψ(C_n)$ if and only if $n=6m$ with $(6,m)=1$ and $G\cong S_3\times C_m$. Two interesting consequences of this result are also presented.
Let G be a finite group of nilpotency class 2 and w a group word. In this short paper we show that the probability that a random n-tuple of elements from G satisfies w is at least one over the order of G. This answers a special case of a conjecture of Alon Amit.
Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms $FH$ with kernel $F$ and complement $H$ such that the fixed-point subgroup of $F$ is trivial: $C_G(F)=1$. In this situation various properties of $G$ are shown to be close to the corresponding properties of $C_G(H)$. By using Clifford's theorem it is proved that the order $|G|$ is bounded in terms of $|H|$ and $|C_G(H)|$, the rank of $G$ is bounded in terms of $|H|$ and the rank of $C_G(H)$, and that $G$ is nilpotent if $C_G(H)$ is nilpotent. Lie ring methods are used for bounding the exponent and the nilpotency class of…
We show that a torsion-free nilpotent loop (that is, a loop nilpotent with respect to the dimension filtration) has a torsion-free nilpotent left multiplication group of, at most, the same class. We also prove that a free loop is residually torsion-free nilpotent and that the same holds for any free commutative loop. Although this last result is much stronger than the usual residual nilpotency of the free loop proved by Higman, it is proved, essentially, by the same method.
We consider word automaticity for groups that are nilpotent of class $2$ and have exponent a prime $p$. We show that the infinitely generated free group in this variety is not word automatic. In contrast, the infinite extra-special $p$-group $E_p$ is word automatic, as well as an intermediate group $H_p$ which has an infinite centre. In the last section we introduce a method to show automaticity of central extensions of abelian groups via co-cycles.
Let $G$ be a finite soluble group and $G^{(k)}$ the $k$th term of the derived series of $G$. We prove that $G^{(k)}$ is nilpotent if and only if $|ab|=|a||b|$ for any $δ_k$-values $a,b\in G$ of coprime orders. In the course of the proof we establish the following result of independent interest: Let $P$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$. Then $P\cap G^{(k)}$ is generated by $δ_k$-values contained in $P$. This is related to the so-called Focal Subgroup Theorem.
We develop methods for computing with matrix groups defined over a range of infinite domains, and apply those methods to the design of algorithms for nilpotent groups. In particular, we provide a practical algorithm to test nilpotency of matrix groups over an infinite field. We also provide algorithms that answer a number of structural questions for a given nilpotent matrix group. The algorithms have been implemented in GAP and MAGMA.
In this paper we prove characterizations of $p$-nilpotency for fusion systems and $p$-local finite groups that are inspired by results in the literature for finite groups. In particular, we generalize criteria by Atiyah, Brunetti, Frobenius, Quillen, Stammbach and Tate.
We solve the following algorithmic problems using TC0 circuits, or in logspace and quasilinear time, uniformly in the class of nilpotent groups with bounded nilpotency class and rank: subgroup conjugacy, computing the normalizer and isolator of a subgroup, coset intersection, and computing the torsion subgroup. Additionally, if any input words are provided in compressed form as straight-line programs or in Mal'cev coordinates the algorithms run in quartic time.
Lazard correspondence provides an isomorphism of categories between finitely generated nilpotent pro-$p$ groups of nilpotency class smaller than $p$ and finitely generated nilpotent $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Lie algebras of nilpotency class smaller than $p$. Denote by $H_{Gr}^i$ and $H_{Lie}^i$ the group cohomology functors and the Lie cohomology functors respectively. The aim of this paper is to show that for $i=0$, $1$ and $1$, and for a given category of modules the cohomology functors $H_{Gr}^i\circ \textbf{exp}$ and $H^i_{Lie}$ are naturally equivalent. A similar result is proven for $i=3$ and the r…
Using Bieberbach groups we study multipermutation involutive solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. We use a linear representation of the structure group of an involutive solution to study the unique product property in such groups. An algorithm to find subgroups of a Bieberbach group isomorphic to the Promislow subgroup is introduced and then used in the case of structure group of involutive solutions. To extend the results related to retractability to non-involutive solutions, following the ideas of Meng, Ballester-Bolinches and Romero, we develop the theory of right $p$-nilpotent skew brace…
We generalize the positive solution of the Frobenius conjecture and refinements thereof by studying the structure of groups that admit a fix-point-free automorphism satisfying an identity. We show, in particular, that for every polynomial $r(t) = a_0 + a_1 \cdot t + \cdots + a_d \cdot t^d \in \mathbb{Z}[t]$ that is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$, there exist (explicit) invariants $a,b,c \in \mathbb{N}$ with the following property. Consider a finite group with a fix-point-free automorphism $α:{G}\longrightarrow{G}$ and suppose that for all $x \in G$ we have the equality $x^{a_0} \cdot α(x^{a_1})…
In this paper we study virtual rational Betti numbers of a nilpotent-by-abelian group $G$, where the abelianization $N/N'$ of its nilpotent part $N$ satisfies certain tameness property. More precisely, we prove that if $N/N'$ is $2(c(n-1)-1)$-tame as a $G/N$-module, $c$ the nilpotency class of $N$, then $\mathrm{vb}_j(G):=\sup_{M\in\mathcal{A}_G}\dim_\mathbb{Q} H_j(M,\mathbb{Q})$ is finite for all $0\leq j\leq n$, where $\mathcal{A}_G$ is the set of all finite index subgroups of $G$.
We establish a surprising correspondence between groups definable in o-minimal structures and linear algebraic groups, in the nilpotent case. It turns out that in the o-minimal context, like for finite groups, nilpotency is equivalent to the normalizer property or to uniqueness of Sylow subgroups. As a consequence, we show algebraic decompositions of o-minimal nilpotent groups, and we prove that a nilpotent Lie group is definable in an o-minimal expansion of the reals if and only if it is a linear algebraic group.
