The variety of sums of powers of a homogeneous polynomial of degree d in n variables is defined and investigated in some examples, old and new. These varieties are studied via apolarity and syzygies. Classical results of Sylvester (1851), Hilbert (1888), Dixon and Stuart (1906) and some more recent results of Mukai (1992) are presented together with new results for the cases (n,d)=(3,8), (4,2), (5,3). In the last case the variety of sums of 8 powers of a general cubic form is a Fano 5-fold of index 1 and degree 660.
We study Minkowski sums and Hadamard products of algebraic varieties. Specifically we explore when these are varieties and examine their properties in terms of those of the original varieties.
Our fundamental result is the construction of new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for the Scorza quartic of any general pairs of trigonal curves and non-effective theta characteristics. This is a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. Among other applications, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Dolgachev and Kanev on the existence of the Scorza quartic for any general pairs of curves and non-effective theta characteristics.
The problem of simultaneous decomposition of binary forms as sums of powers of linear forms is studied. For generic forms the minimal number of linear forms needed is found and the space parametrizing all the possible decompositions is described. These results are applied to the study of rational curves.
We construct new subvarieties in the varieties of power sums for certain quartic hypersurfaces. This provides a generalization of Mukai's description of smooth prime Fano threefolds of genus twelve as the varieties of power sums for plane quartics. In fact, in our second paper, we show that these quartics are exactly the Scorza quartics associated to general pairs of trigonal curves and ineffective theta characteristics and this enables us to prove there the main cojecture of Dolgachev and Kanev.
We study the geometry of some varieties of sums of powers related to the Klein quartic. This allows us to describe the birational geometry of certain moduli spaces of abelian surfaces. In particular we show that the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_2(1,7)^{-}_{sym}$ of $(1,7)$-polarized abelian surfaces with a symmetric theta structure and an odd theta characteristic is unirational by showing that it admits a dominant morphism from a unirational conic bundle.
We compute the Newton--Okounkov bodies of line bundles on a Bott--Samelson resolution of the complete flag variety of $GL_n$ for a geometric valuation coming from a flag of translated Schubert subvarieties. The Bott--Samelson resolution corresponds to the decomposition $(s_1)(s_2s_1)(s_3s_2s_1)(\ldots)(s_{n-1}\ldots s_1)$ of the longest element in the Weyl group, and the Schubert subvarieties correspond to the terminal subwords in this decomposition. We prove that the resulting Newton--Okounkov polytopes for semiample line bundles satisfy the additivity property with respect to the Minkowski s…
Let X be a real nondegenerate projective subvariety such that its set of real points is Zariski dense. We prove that every real quadratic form that is nonnegative on X is a sum of squares of linear forms if and only if X is a variety of minimal degree. This substantially extends Hilbert's celebrated characterization of equality between nonnegative forms and sums of squares. We obtain a complete list for the cases of equality and also a classification of the lattice polytopes Q for which every nonnegative Laurent polynomial with support contained in 2Q is a sum of squares.
Let $X\subset\mathbb{P}^{N}$ be an irreducible, non-degenerate variety. The generalized variety of sums of powers $VSP_H^X(h)$ of $X$ is the closure in the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{h}(X)$ of the locus parametrizing collections of points $\{x_{1},...,x_{h}\}$ such that the $(h-1)$-plane $\left\langle x_{1},...,x_{h}\right\rangle$ passes trough a fixed general point $p\in\mathbb{P}^{N}$. When $X = V_{d}^{n}$ is a Veronese variety we recover the classical variety of sums of powers $VSP(F,h)$ parametrizing additive decompositions of a homogeneous polynomial as powers of linear forms. In this paper we…
In this note we show that the apolar cubic forms associated to codimension two linear sections of canonical curves of genus at least eleven are special with respect to their presentation as sums of cubes.
The main outcome of this paper is that the variety VSP(F,10) of presentations of a general cubic form F in 6 variables as a sum of 10 cubes is a smooth symplectic 4-fold obtained a deformation of the Hilbert square of a K3 surface of genus 8. After publishing it in Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No.4, 1455-1468 (2001), it was noted to us by Eyal Markman that in Theorem 3.17 we conclude without proof that VSP(F,10) should be the 4-fold of lines on another cubic 4-fold. We correct this in the e-print "Addendum to K3 surfaces of genus 8 and varieties of sums of powers of cubic fourfolds" (math.AG/061…
Motivated by scheme theory, we introduce strong nonnegativity on real varieties, which has the property that a sum of squares is strongly nonnegative. We show that this algebraic property is equivalent to nonnegativity for nonsingular real varieties. Moreover, for singular varieties, we reprove and generalize obstructions of Gouveia and Netzer to the convergence of the theta body hierarchy of convex bodies approximating the convex hull of a real variety.
Our goal in this note is to give a number of examples of abelian varieties over function fields k(t) which have bounded ranks in towers of extensions such as k(t^{1/d}) for varying d. Along the way we prove some new results on Fermat curves which may be of independent interest.
In this note, which is an addendum to the e-print math.AG/9810121, we prove that the variety VSP(F,10) of presentations of a general cubic form F in 6 variables as a sum of 10 cubes is a smooth symplectic 4-fold, which is deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface of genus 8 but different from the family of lines on a cubic 4-fold. This provides a new geometric construction of a compact complex symplectic fourfold, different from a Hilbert square of a K3 surface, a generalized Kummer 4-fold, the variety of lines on a cubic 4-fold and the recent examples of O'Grady (see Duke M…
Amoebas and coamoebas are the logarithmic images of algebraic varieties and the images of algebraic varieties under the arg-map, respectively. We present new techniques for computational problems on amoebas and coamoebas, thus establishing new connections between (co-)amoebas, semialgebraic and convex algebraic geometry and semidefinite programming. Our approach is based on formulating the membership problem in amoebas (respectively coamoebas) as a suitable real algebraic feasibility problem. Using the real Nullstellensatz, this allows to tackle the problem by sums of squares techniques and se…
In this paper, to any subset $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathbb{Z}^{n}$ we explicitly associate a unique monomial projection $Y_{n,d_{\mathcal{A}}}$ of a Veronese variety, whose Hilbert function coincides with the cardinality of the $t$-fold sumsets $t\mathcal{A}$. This link allows us to tackle the classical problem of determining the polynomial $p_{\mathcal{A}} \in \mathbb{Q}[t]$ such that $|t\mathcal{A}| = p_{\mathcal{A}}(t)$ for all $t \geq t_0$ and the minimum integer $n_0(\mathcal{A}) \leq t_0$ for which this condition is satisfied, i.e. the so-called {\em phase transition} of $|t\mathcal{A}|$.…
Powersum varieties, also called varieties of sums of powers, have provided examples of interesting relations between varieties since their first appearance in the 19th century. One of the most useful tools to study them is apolarity, a notion originally related to the action of differential operators on the polynomial ring. In this work we make explicit how one can see apolarity in terms of the Cox ring of a variety. In this way powersum varieties are a special case of varieties of apolar schemes; we explicitely describe examples of such varieties in the case of two toric surfaces, when the Co…
Varieties of Sums of Powers describe the additive decompositions of an homogeneous polynomial into powers of linear forms. Despite their long history, going back to Sylvester and Hilbert, few of them are known for special degrees and number of variables. In this paper we aim to understand a general birational behaviour of VSP, if any. To do this we birationally embed these varieties into Grassmannians and prove the rationality, unirationality or rational connectedness of many of those in arbitrary degrees and number of variables.
We bound the Pythagoras number of a real projective subvariety: the smallest positive integer $r$ such that every sum of squares of linear forms in its homogeneous coordinate ring is a sum of at most $r$ squares. Enhancing existing methods, we exhibit three distinct upper bounds involving known invariants. In contrast, our lower bound depends on a new invariant of a projective subvariety called the quadratic persistence. Defined by projecting away from points, this numerical invariant is closely related to the linear syzygies of the variety. In addition, we classify the projective subvarieties…
We associate to a real projective variety $X$ two convex cones which are fundamental in real algebraic geometry: the cone $P_X$ of quadratic forms nonnegative on $X$, and the cone $Σ_X$ of sums of squares of linear forms. The dual cone $Σ_X^\ast$ is a spectrahedron and we show that its convexity properties are closely related to homological properties of $X$. For instance, we show that all extreme rays of $Σ_X^\ast$ have rank one if and only if X has Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity two. More generally, if $Σ_X^\ast$ has an extreme ray of rank $p > 1$, then $X$ does not satisfy the property $N_{…
We study the complexity of approximating complex zero sets of certain $n$-variate exponential sums. We show that the real part, $R$, of such a zero set can be approximated by the $(n-1)$-dimensional skeleton, $T$, of a polyhedral subdivision of $\mathbb{R}^n$. In particular, we give an explicit upper bound on the Hausdorff distance: $Δ(R,T) =O\left(t^{3.5}/δ\right)$, where $t$ and $δ$ are respectively the number of terms and the minimal spacing of the frequencies of $g$. On the side of computational complexity, we show that even the $n=2$ case of the membership problem for $R$ is undecidable i…
We consider two seemingly unrelated questions: the relationship between nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares on real varieties, and sparse semidefinite programming. This connection is natural when a real variety $X$ is defined by a quadratic square-free monomial ideal. In this case nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares on $X$ are also natural objects in positive semidefinite matrix completion. Nonnegative quadratic forms over $X$ naturally correspond to partially specified matrices where all of the fully specified square blocks are PSD, and sums of squares quadratic forms naturall…
We study projective completions of affine algebraic varieties which are given by filtrations, or equivalently, 'degree like functions' on their rings of regular functions. For a quasifinite polynomial map P (i.e. with all fibers finite) of affine varieties, we prove that there are completions of the source that do not add points at infinity for P (i.e. in the intersection of completions of the hypersurfaces corresponding to a generic fiber and determined by the component functions of P). Moreover we show that there are 'finite type' completions with the latter property, determined by the maxim…
The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula which allows one to compute the dimension of the cohomology groups of the sheaf $Ω_¶^p(D)$ of p-th differential forms of Zariski twisted by an ample invertible sheaf on a complete simplicial toric variety. The formula involves some combinatorial sums of integer points over all faces of the support polytope for ${Ø_X}(D)$. We also introduce a new combinatorial object, the so-called p-th Hilbert-Erhart polynomial, which generalizes the usual notion and behaves similar. Namely, there exists a generalization of the inversion law for a usual …
We try to write (generic) elements of classical simple Lie algebras as sums of as few elements of the orbit C of long root vectors as possible. If the Lie algebra in question is sl_n or sp_n, then C consists of all rank 1 matrices in the Lie algebra, and an element of rank k is the sum of k elements of C. If, on the other hand, the Lie algebra is o_n, then C consists of all rank 2 matrices with square zero, and the situation is much more complicated. We explicitly describe, in this case as well, the closure of the set of all sums of k elements of C, also known as the (k-1)st secant variety of …
This article is an expanded version of the talk given by the first author at the conference "Exponential sums over finite fields and applications" (ETH, Zürich, November, 2010). We state some conjectures on archimedian and $p$-adic estimates for multiplicative character sums over smooth projective varieties. We also review some of the results of J. Dollarhide, which formed the basis for these conjectures. Applying his results, we prove one of the conjectures when the smooth projective variety is ${\mathbb P}^n$ itself.
Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.
We classify products of symmetric powers of a Severi-Brauer variety, up-to stable birational equivalence. The description also includes Grassmannians and moduli spaces of genus 0 stable maps.
For fixed degree and increasing number of variables the dimension of the vector space of $n$-variate real symmetric homogeneous polynomials (forms) of degree $d$ stabilizes. We study the limits of the cones of symmetric nonnegative polynomials and symmetric sums of squares, when expressed in power-mean or monomial-mean basis. These limits correspond to forms with stable expression in power-mean (or monomial-mean) polynomials that are globally nonnegative (resp. sums of squares) regardless of the number of variables. We introduce partial symmetry reduction to describe the limit cone of symmetri…
We define the concept of an affinized projective variety and show how one can, in principle, obtain q-identities by different ways of computing the Hilbert series of such a variety. We carry out this program for projective varieties associated to quadratic monomial ideals. The resulting identities have applications in describing systems of quasi-particles containing null-states and can be interpreted as alternating sums of quasi-particle Fock space characters.
In this paper we give an essential treatment for estimating arbitrary integral power moments of Kloosterman sums over the residue class ring. For prime moduli we derive explicit estimates, and for prime-power moduli we prove concrete formulas using computations with Igusa zeta functions.
We study the quantitative relationship between the cones of nonnegative polynomials, cones of sums of squares and cones of sums of powers of linear forms. We derive bounds on the volumes (raised to the power reciprocal to the ambient dimension) of compact sections of the three cones. We show that the bounds are asymptotically exact if the degree is fixed and number of variables tends to infinity. When the degree is larger than two it follows that there are significantly more non-negative polynomials than sums of squares and there are significantly more sums of squares than sums of powers of li…
Using a recent result of Salberger, we establish the paucity of non-trivial positive integer solutions to a certain system of diagonal Diophantine equations.
We study certain correspondences over Drinfeld modular varieties given by sums of Hecke correspondences. We propose generalizations of Stickelberger's theorem for higher dimensions. Using this result, we study anihilators for some cusp forms.
We study real ternary forms whose real rank equals the generic complex rank, and we characterize the semialgebraic set of sums of powers representations with that rank. Complete results are obtained for quadrics and cubics. For quintics we determine the real rank boundary: it is a hypersurface of degree 168. For quartics, sextics and septics we identify some of the components of the real rank boundary. The real varieties of sums of powers are stratified by discriminants that are derived from hyperdeterminants.
We generalize an example, due to Sylvester, and prove that any monomial of degree $d$ in $\mathbb R[x_0, x_1]$, which is not a power of a variable, cannot be written as a linear combination of fewer than $d$ powers of linear forms.
A celebrated result by Hilbert says that every real nonnegative ternary quartic is a sum of three squares. We show more generally that every nonnegative quadratic form on a real projective variety $X$ of minimal degree is a sum of $\dim(X)+1$ squares of linear forms. This strengthens one direction of a recent result due to Blekherman, Smith, and Velasco. Our upper bound is the best possible, and it implies the existence of low-rank factorizations of positive semidefinite bivariate matrix polynomials and representations of biforms as sums of few squares. We determine the number of equivalence c…
In recent years, a multiplier ideal defined on arbitrary varieties, so called Mather multiplier ideal, has been developed independently by Ein-Ishii-Mustata, and de Fernex-Docampo. With this new tool, we have a chance of extending some classical results proved in nonsingular case to arbitrary varieties to establish their general forms. In this paper, we first extend a result of geometric nullstellensatz due to Ein-Lazarsfeld in nonsingular case to any projective varieties. Then we prove a result on comparison of symbolic powers with ordinary powers on any varieties, which extends results of Ei…
We investigate properties of Waring decompositions of real homogeneous forms. We study the moduli of real decompositions, so-called Space of Sums of Powers, naturally included in the Variety of Sums of Powers. Explicit results are obtained for quaternary quadrics, relating the algebraic boundary of ${\rm SSP}$ to various loci in the Hilbert scheme of four points in $\mathbb{P}^3$. Further, we study the locus of general real forms whose real rank coincides with the complex rank. In case of quaternary quadrics the boundary of this locus is a degree forty hypersurface $J(σ_3(v_3(\mathbb{P}^3)),τ(…
We study the problem of recovering a collection of $n$ numbers from the evaluation of $m$ power sums. This yields a system of polynomial equations, which can be underconstrained ($m < n$), square ($m = n$), or overconstrained ($m > n$). Fibers and images of power sum maps are explored in all three regimes, and in settings that range from complex and projective to real and positive. This involves surprising deviations from the Bézout bound, and the recovery of vectors from length measurements by $p$-norms.
