The k-th Fitting ideal of the Alexander invariant B of an arrangement A of n complex hyperplanes defines a characteristic subvariety, V_k(A), of the complex algebraic n-torus. In the combinatorially determined case where B decomposes as a direct sum of local Alexander invariants, we obtain a complete description of V_k(A). For any arrangement A, we show that the tangent cone at the identity of this variety coincides with R^1_k(A), one of the cohomology support loci of the Orlik-Solomon algebra. Using work of Arapura and Libgober, we conclude that all positive-dimensional components of V_k(A) are combinatorially determined, and that R^1_k(A) is the union of a subspace arrangement in C^n, thereby resolving a conjecture of Falk. We use these results to study the reflection arrangements associated to monomial groups.
We give examples of complex hyperplane arrangements for which the top characteristic variety contains positive-dimensional irreducible components that do not pass through the origin of the character torus. These examples answer several questions of Libgober and Yuzvinsky. As an application, we exhibit a pair of arrangements for which the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra are (abstractly) isomorphic, yet whose characteristic varieties are not isomorphic. The difference comes from translated components, which are not detected by the tangent cone at the origin.
A general vanishing result for the first cohomology group of affine smooth complex varieties with values in rank one local systems is established. This is applied to the determination of the monodromy action on the first cohomology group of the Milnor fiber of some line arrangements, including the monomial arrangement and the exceptional reflection arrangement of type $G_{31}$.
We investigate toric varieties defined by arrangements of hyperplanes and call them strongly symmetric. The smoothness of such a toric variety translates to the fact that the arrangement is crystallographic. As a result, we obtain a complete classification of this class of toric varieties. Further, we show that these varieties are projective and describe associated toric arrangements in these varieties.
The characteristic varieties of a space are the jump loci for homology of rank 1 local systems. The way in which the geometry of these varieties may vary with the characteristic of the ground field is reflected in the homology of finite cyclic covers. We exploit this phenomenon to detect torsion in the homology of Milnor fibers of projective hypersurfaces. One tool we use is the interpretation of the degree 1 characteristic varieties of a hyperplane arrangement complement in terms of orbifold fibrations and multinets on the corresponding matroid. Another tool is a polarization construction, ba…
Let $X$ be a nonempty real variety that is invariant under the action of a reflection group $G$. We conjecture that if $X$ is defined in terms of the first $k$ basic invariants of $G$ (ordered by degree), then $X$ meets a $k$-dimensional flat of the associated reflection arrangement. We prove this conjecture for the infinite types, reflection groups of rank at most $3$, and $F_4$ and we give computational evidence for $H_4$. This is a generalization of Timofte's degree principle to reflection groups. For general reflection groups, we compute nontrivial upper bounds on the minimal dimension of …
In this paper we investigate special arrangements of lines in multiprojective spaces. In particular, we characterize codimensional two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties in $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$, called varieties of lines. We also describe their ACM property from combinatorial algebra point of view.
We show that an element $w$ of a finite Weyl group $W$ is rationally smooth if and only if the hyperplane arrangement $I$ associated to the inversion set of $w$ is inductively free, and the product $(d_1+1) \cdots (d_l+1)$ of the coexponents $d_1,\ldots,d_l$ is equal to the size of the Bruhat interval $[e,w]$, where $e$ is the identity in $W$. As part of the proof, we describe exactly when a rationally smooth element in a finite Weyl group has a chain Billey-Postnikov decomposition. For finite Coxeter groups, we show that chain Billey-Postnikov decompositions are connected with certain modular…
We calculate Chow quotients of some families of symmetric \(T\)-varieties. In complexity two we obtain new examples of Kähler-Einstein metrics by bounding the symmetric alpha invariant of their orbifold quotients. As an additional application we determine the homeomorpism class of the orbit space of the compact torus action.
Hyperplane arrangements form the geometric counterpart of combinatorial objects such as matroids. The shape of the sequence of Betti numbers of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement is of particular interest in combinatorics, where they are known, up to a sign, as Whitney numbers of the first kind, and appear as the coefficients of chromatic, or characteristic, polynomials. We show that certain combinations, some nonlinear, of these Betti numbers satisfy Schur positivity. At the same time, we study the higher degree resonance varieties of the arrangement. We draw some consequences, using …
This is a revision and update of the part of the preprint math.CO/0405210 concerning field coefficients, line complexes, and the Hessian arrangement. The material from that paper concerning coefficients in arbitrary commutative rings and the deleted B_3 arrangement will appear separately.
Unexpected hypersurfaces are a brand name for some special linear systems. They were introduced around 2017 and are a field of intensive study since then. They attracted a lot of attention because of their close tights to various other areas of mathematics including vector bundles, arrangements of hyperplanes, geometry of projective varieties. Our research is motivated by the what is now known as the BMSS duality, which is a new way of deriving projective varieties out of already constructed. The last author coined the concept of companion surfaces in the setting of unexpected curves admitted …
We study the homotopy types of complements of arrangements of n transverse planes in R^4, obtaining a complete classification for n <= 6, and lower bounds for the number of homotopy types in general. Furthermore, we show that the homotopy type of a 2-arrangement in R^4 is not determined by the cohomology ring, thereby answering a question of Ziegler. The invariants that we use are derived from the characteristic varieties of the complement. The nature of these varieties illustrates the difference between real and complex arrangements.
We introduce arrangements of rational sections over curves. They generalize line arrangements on P^2. Each arrangement of d sections defines a single curve in P^{d-2} through the Kapranov's construction of \bar{M}_{0,d+1}. We show a one-to-one correspondence between arrangements of d sections and irreducible curves in M_{0,d+1}, giving also correspondences for two distinguished subclasses: transversal and simple crossing. Then, we associate to each arrangement A (and so to each irreducible curve in M_{0,d+1}) several families of nonsingular projective surfaces X of general type with Chern numb…
We show that a line arrangement in the complex projective plane supports a nontrivial resonance variety if and only if it is the underlying arrangement of a "multinet," a multi-arrangement with a partition into three or more equinumerous classes which have equal multiplicities at each inter-class intersection point, and satisfy a connectivity condition. We also prove that this combinatorial structure is equivalent to the existence of a pencil of plane curves, also satisfying a connectivity condition, whose singular fibers include at least three products of lines, which comprise the arrangement…
We define a new class of completions of locally symmetric varieties of type IV which interpolates between the Baily-Borel compactification and Mumford's toric compactifications. An arithmetic arrangement in a locally symmetric variety of type IV determines such a completion canonically. This completion admits a natural contraction that leaves the complement of the arrangement untouched. The resulting completion of the arrangement complement is very much like a Baily-Borel compactification: it is the proj of an algebra of meromorphic automorphic forms. When that complement has a moduli space in…
The order of the Milnor fiber monodromy operator of a central hyperplane arrangement is shown to be combinatorially determined. In particular, a necessary and sufficient condition for the triviality of this monodromy operator is given. It is known that the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement is cohomologically Tate and, if the arrangement is defined over $\Q$, has polynomial count. We show that these properties hold for the corresponding Milnor fibers if the monodromy is trivial. We construct a hyperplane arrangement defined over $\Q$, whose Milnor fiber has a nontrivial monodromy o…
We investigate the arrangement of hypersurfaces on a nonsingular varieties whose associated logarithmic vector bundle is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (for short, aCM), and prove that the projective space is the only smooth complete intersection with Picard rank one that admits an aCM logarithmic vector bundle. We also obtain a number of results on aCM logarithmic vector bundles over several specific varieties. As an opposite situation we investigate the Torelli-type problem that the logarithmic cohomology determines the arrangement.
We study the combinatorics of pseudoline arrangements and their relation to the geometry of flag and Schubert varieties. We associate to each pseudoline arrangement two polyhedral cones, defined in a dual manner. We prove that one of them is the weighted string cone by Littelmann and Berenstein-Zelevinsky. For the other we show how it arises in the framework of cluster varieties and mirror symmetry by Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich: for the flag variety the cone is the tropicalization of their superpotential while for Schubert varieties a restriction of the superpotential is necessary. We prove…
For strongly Euler-homogeneous, Saito-holonomic, and tame analytic germs we consider general types of multivariate Bernstein-Sato ideals associated to arbitrary factorizations of our germ. We show the zero loci of these ideals are purely codimension one and the zero loci associated to different factorizations are related by a diagonal property. If, additionally, the divisor is a hyperplane arrangement, we show the Bernstein-Sato ideals attached to a factorization into linear forms are principal. As an application, we independently verify and improve an estimate of Maisonobe's regarding standar…
We show that under a suitable transversality condition, the intersection of two rational subtori in an algebraic torus $(\C^*)^n$ is a finite group which can be determined using the torsion part of some associated lattice. Applications are given to the study of characteristic varieties of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an example we discuss A. Suciu's line arrangement, the so-called deleted $B_3$-arrangement.
For a triple of complex hyperplane arrangements, there is a well-known long exact sequence relating the cohomology of the complements. We observe that this result extends to certain local coefficient systems, and use this extension to study the characteristic varieties of arrangements. We show that the first characteristic variety may contain components that are translated by characters of any order, thereby answering a question of A. Suciu.
We introduce a family of generalized Broughton polynomials and compute the characteristic varieties of complement of a curve arrangement defined by fibers of some generalized Broughton polynomials
The hypertoric variety $\mathfrak{M}_{\mathcal{A}}$ defined by an affine arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ admits a natural tropicalization, induced by its embedding in a Lawrence toric variety. We explicitly describe the polyhedral structure of this tropicalization. Using a recent result of Gubler, Rabinoff, and Werner, we prove that there is a continuous section of the tropicalization map.
Let R^1(A,R) be the degree-one resonance variety over a field R of a hyperplane arrangement A. We give a geometric description of R^1(A,R) in terms of projective line complexes. The projective image of R^1(A,R) is a union of ruled varieties, parametrized by neighborly partitions of subarrangements of A. The underlying line complexes are intersections of special Schubert varieties, easily described in terms of the corresponding partition. We generalize the definition and decomposition of R^1(A,R) to arbitrary commutative rings, and point out the anomalies that arise. In general the decompositio…
We study the irreducibility of resonance varieties of graded rings over an exterior algebra E with particular attention to Orlik-Solomon algebras. We prove that for a stable monomial ideal in E the first resonance variety is irreducible. If J is an Orlik- Solomon ideal of an essential central hyperplane arrangement, then we show that its first resonance variety is irreducible if and only if the subideal of J generated by all degree 2 elements has a 2-linear resolution. As an application we characterize those hyperplane arrangements of rank less than or equal to 3 where J is componentwise linea…
Given a semisimple complex linear algebraic group $G$ and a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots of $G$, three objects arise: the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, and the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(S,I)$. We show that a certain graded ring derived from the logarithmic derivation module of $\mathcal{A}_I$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ and $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))^W$, the invariants in $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))$ under an action of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$. This isomorphism is shown for general Lie type, an…
We study a relation between roots of characteristic polynomials and intersection points of line arrangements. Using these results, we obtain a lot of applications for line arrangements. Namely, we give (i) a generalized addition theorem for line arrangements, (ii) a generalization of Faenzi-Vallès' theorem over a field of arbitrary characteristic, (iii) a partial result on the conjecture of Terao of line arrangements, and (iv) a new sufficient condition for freeness over finite fields. Also, a higher dimensional version of main results is considered.
This is a survey of some recent developments in the study of complements of line arrangements in the complex plane. We investigate the fundamental groups and finite covers of those complements, focusing on homological and enumerative aspects. The unifying framework for this study is the stratification of the character variety of the fundamental group, G, by the jumping loci for cohomology with coefficients in rank 1 local systems. Counting certain torsion points on these "characteristic" varieties yields information about the homology of branched and unbranched covers of the complement, as wel…
We relate the cohomology of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a discriminantal arrangement to the local system cohomology of the complement. The Orlik-Solomon algebra of such an arrangement (viewed as a complex) is shown to be a linear approximation of a complex arising from the fundamental group of the complement, the cohomology of which is isomorphic to that of the complement with coefficients in an arbitrary complex rank one local system. We also establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement of a discriminantal arrangement and the resonant varieties of its Orli…
We study the Hadamard product of the linear forms defining a hyperplane arrangement with those of its dual, which we view as generating an ideal in a certain polynomial ring. We use this ideal, which we call the ideal of pairs, to study logarithmic derivations and critical set varieties of arrangements in a way which is symmetric with respect to matroid duality. Our main result exhibits the variety of the ideal of pairs as a subspace arrangement whose components correspond to cyclic flats of the arrangement. As a corollary, we are able to give geometric explanations of some freeness and projec…
This paper provides insights into the role of symmetry in studying polynomial functions vanishing to high order on an algebraic variety. The varieties we study are singular loci of hyperplane arrangements in projective space, with emphasis on arrangements arising from complex reflection groups. We provide minimal sets of equations for the radical ideals defining these singular loci and study containments between the ordinary and symbolic powers of these ideals.
For an arrangement with complement X and fundamental group G, we relate the truncated cohomology ring, H^{<=2}(X), to the second nilpotent quotient, G/G_3. We define invariants of G/G_3 by counting normal subgroups of a fixed prime index p, according to their abelianization. We show how to compute this distribution from the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra mod p. As an application, we establish the cohomology classification of 2-arrangements of n<=6 planes in R^4.
We consider a weighted family of $n$ generic parallelly translated hyperplanes in $\C^k$ and describe the characteristic variety of the Gauss-Manin differential equations for associated hypergeometric integrals. The characteristic variety is given as the zero set of Laurent polynomials, whose coefficients are determined by weights and the Plucker coordinates of the associated point in the Grassmannian Gr(k,n). The Laurent polynomials are in involution.
Conjectures of Suciu relate the fundamental group of the complement M = C^n\A of a hyperplane arrangement A to the first resonance variety of H^*(M,Z). We describe a connection between the first resonance variety and the Orlik-Terao algebra C(A) of the arrangement. In particular, we show that non-local components of R^1(A) give rise to determinantal syzygies of C(A). As a result, Proj(C(A)) lies on a scroll, placing geometric constraints on R^1(A). The key observation is that C(A) is the homogeneous coordinate ring associated to a nef but not ample divisor on the blowup of P^2 at the singular …
We show that the maximum likelihood degree of a smooth very affine variety is equal to the signed topological Euler characteristic. This generalizes Orlik and Terao's solution to Varchenko's conjecture on complements of hyperplane arrangements to smooth very affine varieties. For very affine varieties satisfying a genericity condition at infinity, the result is further strengthened to relate the variety of critical points to the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class. The strengthened version recovers the geometric deletion-restriction formula of Denham et al. for arrangement complements, and general…
We investigate the logarithmic bundles associated to arrangements of hypersurfaces with a fixed degree in a smooth projective variety. We then specialize to the case when the variety is a quadric hypersurface and a multiprojective space to prove a Torelli type theorem in some cases.
A central question in arrangement theory is to determine whether the characteristic polynomial $Δ_q$ of the algebraic monodromy acting on the homology group $H_q(F(\mathcal{A}),\mathbb{C})$ of the Milnor fiber of a complex hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ is determined by the intersection lattice $L(\mathcal{A})$. Under simple combinatorial conditions, we show that the multiplicities of the factors of $Δ_1$ corresponding to certain eigenvalues of order a power of a prime $p$ are equal to the Aomoto--Betti numbers $β_p(\mathcal{A})$, which in turn are extracted from $L(\mathcal{A})$. When $…
We develop a model for the cohomology of the complement of a hypersurface arrangement inside a smooth projective complex variety. This generalizes the case of normal crossing divisors, discovered by P. Deligne in the context of the mixed Hodge theory of smooth complex varieties. Our model is a global version of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, which computes the cohomology of the complement of a union of hyperplanes in an affine space. The main tool is the complex of logarithmic forms along a hypersurface arrangement, and its weight filtration. Connections with wonderful compactifications and the co…
We will consider some characterizations of freeness of a hyperplane arrangement, in terms of the following properties: locally freeness, factorization of characteristic polynomial and freeness of restricted multiarrangement. In the case of 3-arrangement, freeness is characterized by factorization of characteristic polynomial and coincidence of its roots with exponents of restricted multiarrangement. In the case of higher dimension, it is characterized by a kind of locally freeness and freeness of restricted multiarrangement. As an application, we prove the freeness of certain arrangements whic…
We give a geometric approach to the relation between the irreducible components of the characteristic varieties of local systems on a plane curve arrangement complement and the associated pencils of plane curves discovered recently by M. Falk and S. Yuzvinsky in the case of line arrangements, see mathAG/0603166. In this case, this geometric point of view was already hinted to by A. Libgober and S. Yuzvinsky. Our study yields new geometric insight on the translated components of the characteristic varieties, relating them to the multiplicities of curves in the associated pencil, in close analog…
We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Orlik-Solomon algebra with the connection operator. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. We also obtain lower bounds f…
We compare each coefficient of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a simple arrangement and that of its Ziegler restriction. As a consequence we can show that the former is not less than the latter in the category of tame arrangements. This is a generalization of Yoshinaga's freeness criterion for 3-arrangements and also the recent result by the author and Yoshinaga. As a corollary, we can prove that a free arrangement is a minimal chamber arrangement, and we can give a freeness criterion in terms of chambers in the category of tame arrangements.
The (homogeneous) Essentially Isolated Determinantal Variety is the natural generalization of generic determinantal variety, and is fundamental example to study non-isolated singularities. In this paper we study the characteristic classes on these varieties. We give explicit formulas of their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes and Chern-Mather classes via standard Schubert calculus. As corollaries we obtain formulas for their (generic) sectional Euler characteristics, characteristic cycles and polar classes.
We use the fixed point arrangement technique developed by Goresky-MacPherson to calculate the part of the equivariant cohomology of the affine flag varieties generated by degree 2. This turns out to be a quadric cone. We also describe the spectrum of the full equivariant cohomology ring as an explicit geometric object. We use our results to show that the vertices of the moment map images of the affine flag varieties lie on a paraboloid.
Generalizing a result of Yoshinaga in dimension 3, we show that a central hyperplane arrangement in 4-space is free exactly if its restriction with multiplicities to a fixed hyperplane of the arrangement is free and its reduced characteristic polynomial equals the characteristic polynomial of this restriction. We show that the same statement holds true in any dimension when imposing certain tameness hypotheses.
