In this paper we introduce and study uniform bases for the ideal arrangements in all Lie types. Explicit uniform bases are given by Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda-Murai-Sato for types $A,B,C,G$ and we provide them for other types. Combining the explicit uniform bases with the work of Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda-Murai-Sato, we also obtain explicit presentations of the cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in all Lie types.
The Jacobian ideal of a hyperplane arrangement is an ideal in the polynomial ring whose generators are the partial derivatives of the arrangements defining polynomial. In this article, we prove that an arrangement can be reconstructed from its Jacobian ideal.
We consider the multiplier ideals of the ideal of a reduced union of lines through the origin in C^3. For general arrangements of lines, we calculate the multiplier ideals.
We compute the multiplier ideals of hyperplane arrangements via the interpretation of these ideals in terms of spaces of arcs, due to Ein, Lazarsfeld and the author.
M. Mustata used jet schemes to compute the multiplier ideals of reduced hyperplane arrangements. We give an alternate proof using a log resolution, which is simpler and allows us to consider non-reduced arrangements. By applying the idea of wonderful models introduced by De Concini--Procesi, we also simplify the result.
We study the Hadamard product of the linear forms defining a hyperplane arrangement with those of its dual, which we view as generating an ideal in a certain polynomial ring. We use this ideal, which we call the ideal of pairs, to study logarithmic derivations and critical set varieties of arrangements in a way which is symmetric with respect to matroid duality. Our main result exhibits the variety of the ideal of pairs as a subspace arrangement whose components correspond to cyclic flats of the arrangement. As a corollary, we are able to give geometric explanations of some freeness and projec…
In this article we describe two new characterizations of freeness for hyperplane arrangements via the study of the generic initial ideal and of the sectional matrix of the Jacobian ideal of arrangements.
We study the relation between zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals and roots of b-functions and obtain a criterion to guarantee that roots of b-functions of a reducible polynomial are determined by the zero locus of the associated Bernstein-Sato ideal. Applying the criterion together with a result of Maisonobe we prove that the set of roots of the b-function of a free hyperplane arrangement is determined by its intersection lattice. We also study the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals and the associated relative characteristic cycles for arbitrary central hyperplane arrangements. We prove the mu…
Infinite hyperplane arrangements whose vertices form a lattice are studied from the point of view of commutative algebra. The quotient of such an arrangement modulo the lattice action represents the minimal free resolution of the associated binomial ideal, which defines a toric subvariety in a product of projective lines. Connections to graphic arrangements and to Beilinson's spectral sequence are explored.
Given a reduced effective divisor D on a smooth variety X, we describe the generating function for the classes of the Hodge ideals of D in the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves on X in terms of the motivic Chern class of the complement of the support of D. As an application, we compute the generating function for the Hilbert series of Hodge ideals of a hyperplane arrangement in terms of the Poincare polynomial of the arrangement.
In the present note we study certain arrangements of codimension $2$ flats in projective spaces, we call them "Fermat arrangements". We describe algebraic properties of their defining ideals. In particular, we show that they provide counterexamples to an expected containment relation between ordinary and symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals.
In this note we describe the minimal resolution of the ideal $I_f$, the saturation of the Jacobian ideal of a nearly free plane curve $C:f=0$. In particular, it follows that this ideal $I_f$ can be generated by at most 4 polynomials. Related general results by Hassanzadeh and Simis on the saturation of codimension 2 ideals are discussed in detail. Some applications to rational cuspidal plane curves and to line arrangements are also given.
We show that the ideal of an arrangement of d linear subspaces of projective space is d-regular in the sense of Castelnuovo and Mumford, answering a question of B. Sturmfels. In particular this implies that the ideal of an arrangement of d subspaces is generated in degrees less than or equal to d.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero and I an ideal defining an arrangement of linear subspaces in the affine space $A^n_k$. We compute the D-module theoretic characteristic cycle of the local cohomology modules $H^r_I(k[x_1,...,x_n])$ in terms of the poset defined by the arrangement. In case I is a monomial ideal, we relate the multiplicities of the characteristic cycle with the Betti numbers of the Alexander dual ideal of I, we also study some extension problems attached to the modules $H^r_I(k[x_1,...,x_n])$. If $k$ is the field of complex numbers we study the ubiquity of these local c…
We study the connection between probability distributions satisfying certain conditional independence (CI) constraints, and point and line arrangements in incidence geometry. To a family of CI statements, we associate a polynomial ideal whose algebraic invariants are encoded in a hypergraph. The primary decompositions of these ideals give a characterisation of the distributions satisfying the original CI statements. Classically, these ideals are generated by 2-minors of a matrix of variables, however, in the presence of hidden variables, they contain higher degree minors. This leads to the stu…
Let $ V $ a vector space of dimension $n$. A family $ \{H_1, \ldots, H_p \} $ of vectorial hyperplans $V$ defines an arrangement $ {\cal A} $ of $ V $. For $ i \in \{ 1, \ldots, p \} $, let $ l_i $ be a linear form on $V$ with $H_i$ as kernel. We denote by $A_V ({\bf C}) $, the Weyl algebra of algebraic differential operators on $V$. Following J. Bernstein, the ideal constituted by polynomials $ b \in {\bf C} [s_1, \ldots, s_p] $ such that : $$ \; \; b (s_1, \ldots, s_p) \, l_1^{s_1} \ldots l_p^{s_p} \in A_n ({\bf C}) [s_1, \ldots, s_p] \, l_1^ {s_1 + 1} \ldots l_p^{s_p + 1} \; , $$ is not red…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ denote a central hyperplane arrangement of rank $n$ in affine space $\mathbb{K}^n$ over an infinite field $\mathbb{K}$ and let $l_1,\ldots, l_m\in R:= \mathbb K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ denote the linear forms defining the corresponding hyperplanes, along with the corresponding defining polynomial $f:=l_1\cdots l_m\in R$. Let $J_f$ denote the ideal generated by the partial derivatives of $f$ and let $\mathbb{I}$ designate the ideal generated by the $(m-1)$-fold products of $l_1,\ldots, l_m$. This paper is centered on the relationship between the two ideals $J_f, \mathbb{I}\subset R$,…
Let $ V $ a vector space of dimension $n$. A $V$ family $ \{H_1, \ldots, H_p \} $ of vectorial hyperplanes being distinct two by two defines an arrangement $ {\cal A}_p = {\cal A} ( H_1, \ldots ,H_p ) $ of $ V $. For $ i \in \{ 1, \ldots, p \} $, let $ l_i $ be a linear form on $V$ with $H_i$ as kernel. This arrangement is generic if the intersection of every sub-family of $n$ hyperplanes of the arranfement is reduced to zero. Let $A_V ({\bf C}) $, be the Weyl algebra of algebraic differential operators with coefficients in the symetric algebra denoted $S$ of the dual of $V$. Following J. Bern…
This paper provides insights into the role of symmetry in studying polynomial functions vanishing to high order on an algebraic variety. The varieties we study are singular loci of hyperplane arrangements in projective space, with emphasis on arrangements arising from complex reflection groups. We provide minimal sets of equations for the radical ideals defining these singular loci and study containments between the ordinary and symbolic powers of these ideals.
Symbolic powers of ideals have attracted interest in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry for many years, with a notable recent focus on containment relations between symbolic powers and ordinary powers. Several invariants have been introduced and studied in the latter context, including the resurgence and asymptotic resurgence. There have been exciting new developments in this area recently. It had been expected for several years that $I^{Nr-N+1}\subseteq I^r$ should hold for the ideal $I$ of any finite set of points in ${\bf P}^N$ for all $r>0$, but in the last year various counterexam…
For strongly Euler-homogeneous, Saito-holonomic, and tame analytic germs we consider general types of multivariate Bernstein-Sato ideals associated to arbitrary factorizations of our germ. We show the zero loci of these ideals are purely codimension one and the zero loci associated to different factorizations are related by a diagonal property. If, additionally, the divisor is a hyperplane arrangement, we show the Bernstein-Sato ideals attached to a factorization into linear forms are principal. As an application, we independently verify and improve an estimate of Maisonobe's regarding standar…
In the present paper we study algebraic properties of edge ideals associated with plane curve arrangements via their Levi graphs. Using combinatorial properties of such Levi graphs we are able to describe those monomial algebras being Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We also condsider the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for these edge ideals. We provide effective lower and upper bounds on them. As a byproduct of our study we connect, in general, various Buchsbaum properties of squarefree modules.
For a central, not necessarily reduced, hyperplane arrangement $f$ equipped with any factorization $f = f_{1} \cdots f_{r}$ and for $f^{\prime}$ dividing $f$, we consider a more general type of Bernstein--Sato ideal consisting of the polynomials $B(S) \in \mathbb{C}[s_{1}, \dots, s_{r}]$ satisfying the functional equation $B(S) f^{\prime} f_{1}^{s_{1}} \cdots f_{r}^{s_{r}} \in \text{A}_{n}(\mathbb{C})[s_{1}, \dots, s_{r}] f_{1}^{s_{1} + 1} \cdots f_{r}^{s_{r} + 1}.$ Generalizing techniques due to Maisonobe, we compute the zero locus of the standard Bernstein--Sato ideal in the sense of Budur (…
We introduce the use of liaison addition to the study of hyperplane arrangements. For an arrangement, $\mathcal A$, of hyperplanes in $\mathbb P^n$, $\mathcal A$ is free if $R/J$ is Cohen-Macaulay, where $J$ is the Jacobian ideal of $\mathcal A$. Terao's conjecture says that freeness of $\mathcal A$ is determined by the combinatorics of the intersection lattice of $\mathcal A$. We study the Cohen-Macaulayness of three other ideals, all unmixed, that are closely related to $\mathcal A$. Let $\overline J = \mathfrak q_1 \cap \dots \cap \mathfrak q_s$ be the intersection of height two primary com…
In this paper, we recover the characteristic polynomial of an arrangement of hyperplanes by computing the rational equivalence class of the variety defined by the logarithmic ideal of the arrangement. The logarithmic ideal was introduced in [arXiv:0907.0896v2] in a study of the critical points of the master function. The above result is used to understand the asymptotic behavior the Hilbert series of the logarithmic ideal. As an application, we prove the Solomon-Terao formula under the tame hypothesis by identifying each side of the formula with a certain specialization of the Hilbert series o…
Given a semisimple complex linear algebraic group $G$ and a lower ideal $I$ in positive roots of $G$, three objects arise: the ideal arrangement $\mathcal{A}_I$, the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,I)$, and the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(S,I)$. We show that a certain graded ring derived from the logarithmic derivation module of $\mathcal{A}_I$ is isomorphic to $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(N,I))$ and $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))^W$, the invariants in $H^*(\mbox{Hess}(S,I))$ under an action of the Weyl group $W$ of $G$. This isomorphism is shown for general Lie type, an…
A net in $\mathbb{P}^2$ is a configuration of lines $\mathcal A$ and points $X$ satisfying certain incidence properties. Nets appear in a variety of settings, ranging from quasigroups to combinatorial design to classification of Kac-Moody algebras to cohomology jump loci of hyperplane arrangements. For a matroid $M$ and rank $r$, we associate a monomial ideal (a monomial variant of the Orlik-Solomon ideal) to the set of flats of $M$ of rank $\le r$. In the context of line arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^2$, applying Alexander duality to the resulting ideal yields insight into the combinatorial str…
In this note we generalize the main result in [DIV: R. Di Gennaro, G. Ilardi, J. Valles, Singular hypersurfaces characterizing the Lefschetz properties J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 89 (2014), no. 1, 194-212] on artinian ideals failing Lefschetz properties, varieties satisfying Laplace equations and existence of suitable singular hypersurfaces. Moreover we characterize the minimally generation of ideals generated by power of linear forms by the configuration of their dual points in the projective plane and we use this result to improve some propositions on line arrangments and Strong Lefschetz prope…
In this note we consider two simplicial arrangements of lines and ideals $I$ of intersection points of these lines. There are $127$ intersection points in both cases and the numbers $t_i$ of points lying on exactly $i$ configuration lines (points of multiplicity $i$) coincide. We show that in one of these examples the containment $I^{(3)} \subseteq I^2$ holds, whereas it fails in the other. We also show that the containment fails for a subarrrangement of $21$ lines. The interest in the containment relation between $I^{(3)}$ and $I^2$ for ideals of points in $¶^2$ is motivated by a question pos…
The purpose of this work is to collect in one place available information on line arrangements known in the literature as braid, monomial, Ceva or Fermat arrangement. They have been studied for a long time and appeared recently in connection with highly interesting problems, namely: the containment problem between symbolic and ordinary powers of ideals and the existence of unexpected hypersurfaces. We also study also derived configurations of points (or more general: linear flats) which arise by intersecting hyperplanes in Fermat arrangements or by taking duals of these hyperplanes. Furthermor…
The k-th Fitting ideal of the Alexander invariant B of an arrangement A of n complex hyperplanes defines a characteristic subvariety, V_k(A), of the complex algebraic n-torus. In the combinatorially determined case where B decomposes as a direct sum of local Alexander invariants, we obtain a complete description of V_k(A). For any arrangement A, we show that the tangent cone at the identity of this variety coincides with R^1_k(A), one of the cohomology support loci of the Orlik-Solomon algebra. Using work of Arapura and Libgober, we conclude that all positive-dimensional components of V_k(A) a…
In [5] (=Terao, H.: Multiderivations of Coxeter arrangements. Inventiones math., 148 (2002) 659--674), we constructed a basis for the contact-order filtration of the module of derivations on the orbit space of a finite real reflection group acting on an $\ell$-dimensional Euclidean space. Recently M. Yoshinaga constructed another basis for the contact-order filtration in [7] (=Yoshinaga, M.: The primitive derivation and freeness of multi-Coxeter arrangements. preprint 2002). In this note we give an explicit formula relating Yoshinaga's basis to the basis given in [5]. The two bases turn out to…
The purpose of this note is to show a new series of examples of homogeneous ideals $I$ in ${\mathbb K}[x,y,z,w]$ for which the containment $I^{(3)}\subset I^2$ fails. These ideals are supported on certain arrangements of lines in ${\mathbb P}^3$, which resemble Fermat configurations of points in ${\mathbb P}^2$, see \cite{NagSec16}. All examples exhibiting the failure of the containment $I^{(3)}\subseteq I^2$ constructed so far have been supported on points or cones over configurations of points. Apart of providing new counterexamples, these ideals seem quite interesting on their own.
