This paper concerns with deformations of noncompact complex hyperbolic manifolds (with locally Bergman metric), varieties of discrete representations of their fundamental groups into $PU(n,1)$ and the problem of (quasiconformal) stability of deformations of such groups and manifolds in the sense of L.Bers and D.Sullivan.
Despite Goldman-Millson-Yue rigidity results for such complex manifolds of infinite volume, we present different classes of such manifolds that allow non-trivial (quasi-Fuchsian) deformations and point out that such flexible manifolds have a common feature being Stein spaces. While deformations of complex surfaces from our first class are induced by quasiconformal homeomorphisms, non-rigid complex surfaces (homotopy equivalent to their complex analytic submanifolds) from another class are quasiconformally unstable, but nevertheless their deformations are induced by homeomorphisms.
We study deformations of complex hyperbolic surfaces which furnish the simplest examples of: (i) negatively curved Kähler manifolds and (ii) negatively curved Riemannian manifolds not having {\it constant} curvature. Although such complex surfaces may share the rigidity of quaternionic/octionic hyperbolic manifolds, our main goal is to show that they enjoy nevertheless the flexibility of low-dimensional real hyperbolic manifolds. Namely we define a class of ``bending" deformations of a given (Stein) complex surface $M$ associated with its closed geodesics provided that $M$ is homotopy equivale…
Given a closed hyperbolic Riemannian surface, the aim of the present paper is to describe an explicit construction of smooth deformations of the hyperbolic metric into Finsler metrics that are not Riemannian and whose properties are such that the classical Riemannian results about entropy rigidity, marked length spectrum rigidity and boundary rigidity all fail to extend to the Finsler category.
For an asymptotically hyperbolic metric on the interior of a compact manifold with boundary, we prove that the resolvent and scattering operators are continuous functions of the metric in the appropriate topologies.
This paper gives an exposition of the authors' harmonic deformation theory for 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. We discuss topological applications to hyperbolic Dehn surgery as well as recent applications to Kleinian group theory. A central idea is that local rigidity results (for deformations fixing cone angles) can be turned into effective control on the deformations that do exist. This leads to precise analytic and geometric versions of the idea that hyperbolic structures with short geodesics are close to hyperbolic structures with cusps. The paper also outlines a new harmonic defo…
We show that any compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifold with cone angle at most πcan be continuously deformed to a complete hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to the complement of the singularity. This together with the local rigidity by Hodgson and Kerckhoff implies the global rigidity for compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifolds under the same angle assumption.
We develop the deformation theory of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles less than $2π$, i.e. contained in the interval $(0,2π)$. In the present paper we focus on deformations keeping the topological type of the cone-manifold fixed. We prove local rigidity for such structures. This gives a positive answer to a question of A. Casson.
We prove that the deformation space AH(M) of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold M with incompressible boundary is locally connected at minimally parabolic points. Moreover, spaces of Kleinian surface groups are locally connected at quasiconformally rigid points. Similar results are obtained for deformation spaces of acylindrical 3-manifolds and Bers slices.
This paper is a sequel to \cite{Xu}. In this paper, an estimation of the Bergman Kernel of Kähler hyperbolic manifold is given by the $L^2$ estimate and the Bochner formula. As an application, an effective criterion of the very ampleness of the canonical line bundle of Kähler hyperbolic manifold is given, which is a generalization of Yeung's result.
The Stoker problem, first formulated in 1968, consists in understanding to what extent a convex polyhedron is determined by its dihedral angles. By means of the double construction, this problem is intimately related to rigidity issues for 3-dimensional cone-manifolds. In a former paper, two such rigidity results were proven, implying that the infinitesimal version of the Stoker conjecture is true in the hyperbolic and Euclidean cases. In this second article, we prove that local rigidity holds and obtain that the space of convex hyperbolic polyhedra with given combinatorial type is locally par…
We construct new complete Einstein metrics on smoothly bounded strictly pseudoconvex domains in Stein manifolds. This is done by deforming the Kähler-Einstein metric of Cheng and Yau, the approach that generalizes the works of Roth and Biquard on the deformations of the complex hyperbolic metric on the unit ball. Recasting the problem into the question of vanishing of an $L^2$ cohomology and taking advantage of the asymptotic complex hyperbolicity of the Cheng-Yau metric, we establish the possibility of such a deformation when the dimension of the domain is larger than or equal to three.
Let M be a complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact non-empty geodesic boundary and k toric cusps, and let T be a geometric partially truncated triangulation of M. We show that the variety of solutions of consistency equations for T is a smooth manifold or real dimension 2k near the point representing the unique complete structure on M. As a consequence, the relation between deformations of triangulations and deformations of representations is completely understood, at least in a neighbourhood of the complete structure. This allows us to prove, for example, that small deformat…
This is the third in a series of papers constructing hyperbolic structures on all Haken three-manifolds. This portion deals with the mixed case of the deformation space for manifolds with incompressible boundary that are not acylindrical, but are more complicated than interval bundles over surfaces. This is a slight revision of a 1986 preprint, with a few figures added, and slight clarifications of some of the text, but with no attempt to connect this to later developments such as groups acting on R-trees, etc.
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
In two former papers, the authors independently proved that the space of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone angles less than 2π and fixed singular locus is locally parametrized by the cone angles. In this sequel, we investigate the local shape of the deformation space when the singular locus is no longer fixed, i.e. when the singular vertices can be split. We show that the different possible splittings correspond to specific pair-of-pants decompositions of the smooth parts of the links of the singular vertices, and that under suitable assumptions the corresponding subspace of deformations i…
We develop and study quaternionic and octonionic analogies of Cartan angular and Toledo invariants that are well known in the complex hyperbolic space. Using such invariants we study quasifuchsian deformations (including bendings) of quaternionic and octonionic hyperbolic manifolds.
Let $X$ be a negatively curved symmetric space and $Γ$ a non-cocompact lattice in $\rm{Isom}(X)$. We show that small, parabolic-preserving deformations of $Γ$ into the isometry group of any negatively curved symmetric space containing $X$ remain discrete and faithful (the cocompact case is due to Guichard). This applies in particular to a version of Johnson-Millson bending deformations, providing for all $n$ infnitely many non-cocompact lattices in ${\rm SO}(n,1)$ which admit discrete and faithful deformations into ${\rm SU}(n,1)$. We also produce deformations of the figure-8 knot group into $…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an affine deformation of a Schottky subgroup of O(2,1) to act properly on affine space. There exists a real-valued biaffine map between the cohomology of the Schottky group and the space of geodesic currents on the corresponding hyperbolic surface S. For a fixed cohomology class, this map is uniformly positive or uniformly negative on the space of geodesic currents if and only if the corresponding affine deformation is proper. As a corollary, the deformation space of proper affine deformations is an open convex cone.
Starting with a compact hyperbolic cone-manifold of dimension n > 2, we study the deformations of the metric in order to get Einstein cone-manifolds. If the singular locus is a closed codimension 2 submanifold and all cone angles are smaller than 2 pi, we show that there is no non-trivial infinitesimal Einstein deformations preserving the cone angles. This result can be interpreted as a higher-dimensional case of the celebrated Hodgson and Kerckhoff's theorem on deformations of hyperbolic 3-cone-manifolds. If all cone angles are smaller than pi, we then give a construction which associates to …
In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the second fundamental form of a complete minimal submanifold $M^n$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+m}$ in order to show that $M^n$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain sharp upper bounds estimates for the first eigenvalue of the super stability operator in the case of $M$ is a surface in $\mathbb{H}^{4}$.
Associated to every complete affine 3-manifold M with nonsolvable fundamental group is a noncompact hyperbolic surface S. We classify such complete affine structures when Sigma is homeomorphic to a three-holed sphere. In particular, for every such complete hyperbolic surface Sigma, the deformation space identifies with two opposite octants in R^3. Furthermore every M admits a fundamental polyhedron bounded by crooked planes. Therefore M is homeomorphic to an open solid handlebody of genus two. As an explicit application of this theory, we construct proper affine deformations of an arithmetic F…
We study the normal operator to the geodesic X-ray transform on functions in the setting of simple asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We construct a parametrix for the normal operator in the 0-pseudodifferential calculus and use it show a stability estimate.
We describe the first-order variations of the angles of Euclidean, spherical or hyperbolic polygons under infinitesimal deformations such that the lengths of the edges do not change. Using this description, we introduce a vector-valued quadratic invariant $b$ on the space of those isometric deformations which, for convex polygons, has a remarkable positivity property. We give two geometric applications. The first is an isoperimetric statement for hyperbolic polygons: among the convex hyperbolic polygons with given edge lengths, there is a unique polygon with vertices on a circle, a horocycle, …
This paper studies the normalized Ricci flow from a slight perturbation of the hyperbolic metric on $\mathbb H^n$. It's proved that if the perturbation is small and decays sufficiently fast at the infinity, then the flow will converge exponentially fast to the hyperbolic metric when the dimension $n>5$.
We show that there exists a suitable neighborhood of a constant curvature hyperbolic metric such that, for all initial data in this neighborhood, the corresponding solution to a normalized cross curvature flow exists for all time and converges to a hyperbolic metric. We show that the same technique proves an analogous result for Ricci flow. Additionally, we show short time existence and uniqueness of cross curvature flow for a more general class of initial data than was previously known.
We show that every finite volume hyperbolic manifold of dimension greater or equal to 3 is stable under rescaled Ricci flow, i.e. that every small perturbation of the hyperbolic metric flows back to the hyperbolic metric again. Note that we do not need to make any decay assumptions on this perturbation. It will turn out that the main difficulty in the proof comes from a weak stability of the cusps which has to do with infinitesimal cusp deformations. We will overcome this weak stability by using a new analytical method developed by Koch and Lamm.
We propose a Lie geometric point of view on flat fronts in hyperbolic space as special omega-surfaces and discuss the Lie geometric deformation of flat fronts.
In this note, we study deformations of quaternionic hyperbolic lattices in larger quaternionic hyperbolic spaces and prove local rigidity results. On the other hand, surface groups are shown to be more flexible in quaternionic hyperbolic plane than in complex hyperbolic plane.
We provide sharp stability estimates for the Alexandrov Soap Bubble Theorem in the hyperbolic space. The closeness to a single sphere is quantified in terms of the dimension, the measure of the hypersurface and the radius of the touching ball condition. As consequence we obtain a new pinching result for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space. Our approach is based on the method of moving planes. In this context we carefully review the method and we provide the first quantitative study in the hyperbolic space.
For a family of minimal helicoids H_a in the hyperbolic 3-space, there exists a constant a_c=2.17966 such that the following statements are true: (1) H_a is a globally stable minimal surface if 0<=a<=a_c, and (2) H_a is an unstable minimal surface with index one if a>a_c.
Using the maximal regularity theory for quasilinear parabolic systems, we prove two stability results of complex hyperbolic space under the curvature-normalized Ricci flow in complex dimensions two and higher. The first result is on a closed manifold. The second result is on a complete noncompact manifold. To prove both results, we fully analyze the structure of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian on complex hyperbolic space. To prove the second result, we also define suitably weighted little Hölder spaces on a complete noncompact manifold and establish their interpolation properties.
In this paper we establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of hyperbolic geometric flow defined on the Euclidean space with dimension larger than 4. Wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived. The relation of hypergeometric flow to the Einstein equation and the Ricci flow is discussed.
A Margulis spacetime is a complete flat Lorentzian 3-manifold M with free fundamental group. Associated to M is a noncompact complete hyperbolic surface S homotopy-equivalent to M. The purpose of this paper is to classify Margulis spacetimes when S is homeomorphic to a one-holed torus. We show that every such M decomposes into polyhedra bounded by crooked planes, corresponding to an ideal triangulation of S. This paper classifies and analyzes the structure of crooked ideal triangles, which play the same role for Margulis spacetimes as ideal triangles play for hyperbolic surfaces. This extends …
We show that the one-loop quantum deformation of the universal hypermultiplet provides a family of complete $1/4$-pinched negatively curved quaternionic Kähler (i.e. half conformally flat Einstein) metrics $g^c$, $c\ge 0$, on $\mathbb R^4$. The metric $g^0$ is the complex hyperbolic metric whereas the family $(g^c)_{c>0}$ is equivalent to a family of metrics $(h^b)_{b>0}$ depending on $b=1/c$ and smoothly extending to $b=0$ for which $h^0$ is the real hyperbolic metric. In this sense the one-loop deformation interpolates between the real and the complex hyperbolic metrics. We also determine th…
We consider the dynamic property of the volume preserving mean curvature flow. This flow was introduced by Huisken who also proved it converges to a round sphere of the same enclosed volume if the initial hypersurface is strictly convex in Euclidean space. We study the stability of this flow in hyperbolic space. In particular, we prove that if the initial hypersurface is hyperbolically mean convex and close to an umbilical sphere in the $L^2$-sense, then the flow exists for all time and converges exponentially to an umbilical sphere.
In this short note, we show that the negative curvature is preserved in the deformation of hyperbolic warped product metrics under Ricci flow. It is also showed that the flow converges to a flat metric as time going to infinity.
In this paper we develop a new theory of infinitesimal harmonic deformations for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with ``tubular boundary''. In particular, this applies to complements of tubes of radius at least $R_0 = \arctanh(1/\sqrt{3}) \approx 0.65848$ around the singular set of hyperbolic cone manifolds, removing the previous restrictions on cone angles. We then apply this to obtain a new quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem, showing that all generalized Dehn surgery coefficients outside a disc of ``uniform'' size yield hyperbolic structures. Here the size of a…
We study the Ricci flow of initial metrics which are C^0-perturbations of the hyperbolic metric on H^n. If the perturbation is bounded in the L^2-sense, and small enough in the C^0-sense, then we show the following: In dimensions four and higher, the scaled Ricci harmonic map heat flow of such a metric converges smoothly, uniformly and exponentially fast in all C^k-norms and in the L^2-norm to the hyperbolic metric as time approaches infinity. We also prove a related result for the Ricci flow and for the two-dimensional conformal Ricci flow.
This paper gives a quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem. Applications include the first universal bounds on the number of non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings on a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, and estimates on the changes in volume and core geodesic length during hyperbolic Dehn filling. The proofs involve the construction of a family of hyperbolic cone-manifold structures, using infinitesimal harmonic deformations and analysis of geometric limits.
