Local scaling of a set means that in a neighborhood of a point the structure of the set can be mapped into a finer scale structure of the set. These scaling transformations are compact sets of locally affine (that is: with uniformly $α$-Hölder continuous derivatives) contractions. In this setting, without any assumption on the spacing of these contractions such as the open set condition, we show that the measure of the set is an upper semi-continuous of the scaling transformation in the $C^0$-topology. With a restriction on the 'non-conformality' (see below) the Hausdorff dimension is lower semi-continous function in the $C^{1}$-topology. We include some examples to show that neither of these notions is continuous.
We study geometric rigidity of a class of fractals, which is slightly larger than the collection of self-conformal sets. Namely, using a new method, we shall prove that a set of this class is contained in a smooth submanifold or is totally spread out.
We introduce and characterize extremal 2-cuts for good fractal necklaces. Using the characterization and the related topological properties of extremal 2-cuts, we prove that every good necklace has a unique necklace IFS in a certain sense. Also, we prove that two good necklaces admit only rigid homeomorphisms and thus the group of self-homeomorphisms of a good necklace is countable. In addition, a certain weaker co-Hopfian property of good necklaces is also obtained.
We give a framework to study the connectedness of the set of zeros of power series with coefficients in a finite subset $G\subset \mathbb{C}$. We prove that the set of zeros in the unit disk is connected and locally connected if some graph on the set $G$ of coefficients is connected. Furthermore, we apply this result to the study of the Mandelbrot set $\mathcal{M}_n$ for fractal $n$-gons. We prove that $\mathcal{M}_n$ is connected and locally connected for any $n$.
We prove the first rigidity and classification theorems for crossed product von Neumann algebras given by actions of non-discrete, locally compact groups. We prove that for arbitrary free probability measure preserving actions of connected simple Lie groups of real rank one, the crossed product has a unique Cartan subalgebra up to unitary conjugacy. We then deduce a W* strong rigidity theorem for irreducible actions of products of such groups. More generally, our results hold for products of locally compact groups that are nonamenable, weakly amenable and that belong to Ozawa's class S.
We study rigidity of rational maps that come from Newton's root finding method for polynomials of arbitrary degrees. We establish dynamical rigidity of these maps: each point in the Julia set of a Newton map is either rigid (i.e. its orbit can be distinguished in combinatorial terms from all other orbits), or the orbit of this point eventually lands in the filled-in Julia set of a polynomial-like restriction of the original map. As a corollary, we show that the Julia sets of Newton maps in many non-trivial cases are locally connected; in particular, every cubic Newton map without Siegel points…
We generalize the higher rank rigidity theorem to a class of Finsler spaces, i.e. Berwald spaces. More precisely, we prove that a complete connected Berwald space of finite volume and bounded nonpositive flag curvature with rank at least $2$ whose universal cover is irreducible, is a locally symmetric space or a locally Minkowski space.
We classify locally finite joinings with respect to the Burger-Roblin measure for the action of a horospherical subgroup $U$ on $Γ\backslash G$, where $G = \operatorname{SO}(n,1)^\circ$ and $Γ$ is a convex cocompact and Zariski dense subgroup of $G$, or geometrically finite with restrictions on critical exponent and rank of cusps. We also prove in the more general case of $Γ$ geometrically finite and Zariski dense that certain $U$-equivariant set-valued maps are rigid.
Let $J$ be a semisimple Lie group with all simple factors of real rank at least two. Let $Γ<J$ be a lattice. We prove a very general local rigidity result about actions of $J$ or $Γ$. This shows that almost all so-called "standard actions" are locally rigid. As a special case, we see that any action of $Γ$ by toral automorphisms is locally rigid. More generally, given a manifold $M$ on which $Γ$ acts isometrically and a torus $\Ta^n$ on which it acts by automorphisms, we show that the diagonal action on $\Ta^n{\times}M$ is locally rigid. This paper is the culmination of a series of papers and …
In this paper we find all solvable subgroups of Diff^omega(S^1) and classify their actions. We also investigate the C^r local rigidity of actions of the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups on the circle. The investigation leads to two novel phenomena in the study of infinite group actions on compact manifolds. We exhibit a finitely generated group Gamma and a manifold M such that: * Gamma has exactly countably infinitely many effective real-analytic actions on M, up to conjugacy in Diff^omega(M); * every effective, real analytic action of Gamma on M is C^r locally rigid, for some r>=3, and for ev…
For an infinitely renormalizable quadratic map $f_c: z\mapsto z^2+c$ with the sequence of renormalization periods ${k_m}$ and rotation numbers ${t_m=p_m/q_m}, we prove that if $\limsup k_m^{-1}\log |p_m|>0$, then the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$. We prove also that if $\limsup |t_{m+1}|^{1/q_m}<1$ and $q_m\to \infty$, then the Julia set of $f_c$ is not locally connected and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$ provided that all the renormalizations are non-primitive (satellite). This quantifies a construction of A. Douady and J. Hubbard, and weakens a condition proposed…
We consider irreducible actions of locally compact product groups, and of higher rank semi-simple Lie groups. Using the intermediate factor theorems of Bader-Shalom and Nevo-Zimmer, we show that the action stabilizers, and all irreducible invariant random subgroups, are co-amenable in their normal closure. As a consequence, we derive rigidity results on irreducible actions that generalize and strengthen the results of Bader-Shalom and Stuck-Zimmer.
Actions of a locally compact group G on a measure space X give rise to unitary representations of G on Hilbert spaces. We review results on the rigidity of these actions from the spectral point of view, that is, results about the existence of a spectral gap for associated averaging operators and their consequences. We will deal both with spaces X with an infinite measure as well as with spaces with an invariant probability measure. The spectral gap property has several striking applications to group theory, geometry, ergodic theory, operator algebras, graph theory, theoretical computer science…
Let $M\stackrel{ρ_0}{\curvearrowleft}S$ be a $C^\infty$ locally free action of a connected simply connected solvable Lie group $S$ on a closed manifold $M$. Roughly speaking, $ρ_0$ is parameter rigid if any $C^\infty$ locally free action of $S$ on $M$ having the same orbits as $ρ_0$ is $C^\infty$ conjugate to $ρ_0$. In this paper we prove two types of result on parameter rigidity. First let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center of real rank at least $2$ without compact factors nor simple factors locally isomorphic to $\mathrm{SO}_0(n,1)$ $(n\geq2)$ or $\mathrm{SU}(n,1)$ $(…
This paper develops new techniques for studying smooth dynamical systems in the presence of a \CC metric. Principally, we employ the theory of Margulis-Mostow, Métivier, Mitchell and Pansu on tangent cones to establish resonances between Lyapunov exponents. We apply these results in three different settings. First, we explore rigidity properties of smooth dominated splittings for Anosov diffeomorphisms and flows via associated smooth \CC metrics. Second, we obtain local rigidity properties of higher hyperbolic rank metrics in a neighborhood of a locally symmetric one. For the latter applicatio…
We consider in this paper elliptic equations which are perturbations of Laplace's equation by a compactly supported potential. We show that in dimension greater than three for a wide class of potentials all the solutions are globally minimising. However, in dimension two the situation is different. We show that for radially symmetric potentials there always exist solutions which are not locally minimal unless the potential vanishes identically. We discuss the relations of this with the so-called Hopf rigidity phenomenon.
We show how to construct a graded locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid from a C*-algebra carrying a coaction of a discrete group, together with a suitable abelian subalgebra. We call this groupoid the extended Weyl groupoid. When the coaction is trivial and the subalgebra is Cartan, our groupoid agrees with Renault's Weyl groupoid. We prove that if G is a second-countable locally compact étale groupoid carrying a grading of a discrete group, and if the interior of the trivially graded isotropy is abelian and torsion free, then the extended Weyl groupoid of its reduced C*-algebra is isomorp…
