Suppose that a real nonatomic function space on $[0,1]$ is equipped with two re\-arran\-ge\-ment-invariant norms $\|\cdot\|$ and $|||\cdot|||$. We study the question whether or not the fact that $(X,\|\cdot\|)$ is isometric to $(X,|||\cdot|||)$ implies that $\|f\|= |||f|||$ for all $f$ in $X$. We show that in strictly monotone Orlicz and Lorentz spaces this is equivalent to asking whether or not the norms are defined by equal Orlicz functions, resp. Lorentz weights.
We show that the above implication holds true in most rearrangement-invariant spaces, but we also identify a class of Orlicz spaces where it fails. We provide a complete description of Orlicz functions $φ\neqψ$ with the property that $L_φ$ and $L_ψ$ are isometric.
The following theorem is the main result of this note. Theorem 1. Let $(E, \|\cdot\|_E) $ be a rearrangement invariant Banach function space on the interval $[0, 1]$. If $E$ is isometric to $Ł_p [0, 1]$ for some $1\le p<\infty$, then $E$ coincides with $Ł_p [0, 1]$ and furthermore $\|\cdot\|_E = λ\|\cdot\|_{Ł_p}$, where $λ= \|{\bf 1}\|_E$.
We prove that if $X$ is a real rearrangement-invariant function space on $[0,1]$, which is not isometrically isomorphic to $L_2,$ then every surjective isometry $T:X\to X$ is of the form $Tf(s)=a(s)f(σ(s))$ for a Borel function $a$ and an invertible Borel map $σ:[0,1] \to [0,1].$ If $X$ is not equal to $L_p$, up to renorming, for some $1\le p\le \infty$ then in addition $|a|=1$ a.e. and $σ$ must be measure-preserving.
Our main goal in this work is to further improve the mixed norm estimates due to Fournier, and also Algervik and Kolyada, to more general rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces. In particular we find the optimal domains and the optimal ranges for these embeddings between mixed norm spaces and r.i. spaces.
We improve the Sobolev-type embeddings due to Gagliardo and Nirenberg in the setting of rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces. In particular we concentrate on seeking the optimal domains and the optimal ranges for these embeddings between r.i. spaces and mixed norm spaces. As a consequence, we prove that the classical estimate for the standard Sobolev space by Poornima, O'Neil and Peetre (1 <=p<n), and by Hansson, Brezis and Wainger and Maz'ya (p=n) can be further strengthened by considering mixed norms on the target spaces.
We consider Lorentz-Karamata spaces, small and grand Lorentz-Karamata spaces, and the so-called $\mathcal{L}$, $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{LL}$, $\mathcal{RL}$, $\mathcal{RL}$, and $\mathcal{RR}$ spaces. The quasi-norms for a function $f$ in each of these spaces can be defined via the non-increasing rearrangement $f^*$ or via the maximal function $f^{**}$. We investigate when these quasi-norms are equivalent. Most of the proofs are based on Hardy-type inequalities. As application we demonstrate how our general results can be used to establish interpolation formulae for the grand and small Lorentz…
Poincaré-Sobolev-type inequalities involving rearrangement-invariant norms on the entire $\mathbb{R}^n$ are provided. Namely, inequalities of the type $\|u-P\|_{Y(\mathbb{R}^n)}\leq C\|\nabla^m u\|_{X(\mathbb{R}^n)}$, where $X$ and $Y$ are either rearrangement-invariant spaces over $\mathbb{R}^n$ or Orlicz spaces over $\mathbb{R}^n$, $u$ is a $m-$times weakly differentiable function whose gradient is in $X$, $P$ is a polynomial of order at most $m-1$, depending on $u$, and $C$ is a constant independent of $u$, are studied. In a sense optimal rearrangement-invariant spaces or Orlicz spaces $Y$ …
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a complex, separable Hilbert space and $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators acting on $\mathcal{H}$. Given a unitarily-invariant norm $\| \cdot \|_u$ on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ and two linear operators $A$ and $B$ in $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$, we shall say that $A$ and $B$ are \emph{polynomially isometric relative to} $\| \cdot \|_u$ if $\| p(A) \|_u = \| p(B) \|_u$ for all polynomials $p$. In this paper, we examine to what extent an operator $A$ being polynomially isometric to a normal operator $N$ implies that $A$ is itself no…
Let (f_n) and (g_n) be two sequences of random variables adapted to an increasing sequence of $σ$-algebras $({\cal F}_n)$ such that the conditional distributions of f_n and g_n given ${\cal F}_{n-1}$ coincide, and such that the sequence (g_n) is conditionally independent. Then it is known that $\normo{\sum f_k}_p \le C \normo{\sum g_k}_p$, $1 \le p \le \infty$ where the constant C is independent of p. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to certain classes of Orlicz and rearrangement invariant spaces. This paper includes fairly general techniques for obtaining rearrangement invariant…
In this paper, we provide an infinite metric space $M$ such that the set $\mbox{SNA}(M)$ of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functions does not contain a subspace which is isometric to $c_0$. This answers a question posed by Antonio Avilés, Gonzalo Martínez Cervantes, Abraham Rueda Zoca, and Pedro Tradacete. On the other hand, we prove that $\mbox{SNA}(M)$ contains an isometric copy of $c_0$ whenever $M$ is a metric space which is not uniformly discrete. In particular, the latter holds true for infinite compact metric spaces while it does not for proper metric spaces. Some positive results in…
Let $1\le p<\infty$. A Banach lattice $E$ is said to be disjointly homogeneous (resp. $p$-disjointly homogeneous) if two arbitrary normalized disjoint sequences from $E$ contain equivalent in $E$ subsequences (resp. every normalized disjoint sequence contains a subsequence equivalent in $E$ to the unit vector basis of $l_p$). Answering a question raised in 2014 by Flores, Hernandez, Spinu, Tradacete, and Troitsky, for each $1<p<\infty$, we construct a reflexive $p$-disjointly homogeneous rearrangement invariant space on $[0,1]$ whose dual is not disjointly homogeneous. Employing methods from i…
We prove that a nonlocal functional approximating the standard Dirichlet $p$-norm fails to decrease under two-point rearrangement. Furthermore, we get other properties related to this functional such as decay and compactness, and the Polya-Szegö inequality for Riesz fractional gradients, a notion recently introduced in the literature.
We study moment rearrangement invariant spaces, which contain as particular cases the generalized Grand Lebesgue Spaces, and provide norm estimates for some operators, not necessarily linear, acting between some measurable rearrangement invariant spaces. The estimations are formulated in the terms of fundamental functions for these spaces.
The space Weak L^1 consists of all measurable functions on [0,1] such that q(f) = sup_{c>0} c λ{t : |f(t)| > c} is finite, where λdenotes Lebesgue measure. Let ρbe the gauge functional of the unit ball {f : q(f) \leq 1} of the quasi- norm q, and let N be the null space of ρ. The normed envelope of Weak L^1, which we denote by W, is the space (Weak L^1/N, ρ). The Banach envelope of Weak L^1, \overline{W}, is the completion of W. We show that \overline{W} is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a sublattice of W. It is also shown that all rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces are isometr…
We construct a Banach rearrangement invariant norm on the measurable space for which the finiteness of this norm for measurable function (random variable) is equivalent to suitable tail (heavy tail and light tail) behavior. We investigate also a conjugate to offered spaces and obtain some embedding theorems. Possible applications: Functional Analysis (for instance, interpolation of operators), Integral Equations, Probability Theory and Statistics (tail estimations for random variables).
Sobolev embeddings, of arbitrary order, are considered into function spaces on domains of $\mathbb R^n$ endowed with measures whose decay on balls is dominated by a power $d$ of their radius. Norms in arbitrary rearrangement-invariant spaces are contemplated. A comprehensive approach is proposed based on the reduction of the relevant $n$-dimensional embeddings to one-dimensional Hardy-type inequalities. Interestingly, the latter inequalities depend on the involved measure only through the power $d$. Our results allow for the detection of the optimal target space in Sobolev embeddings, for broa…
We characterize real Banach spaces $Y$ such that the pair $(\ell_\infty ^n, Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators. To this purpose it is essential the use of an appropriate basis of the domain space $\R^n$. As a consequence of the mentioned characterization, we provide examples of spaces $Y$ satisfying such property. For instance, finite-dimensional spaces, uniformly convex spaces, uniform algebras and $L_1(μ)$ ($μ$ a positive measure) satisfy the previous property.
We generalize the notion of $m$-isometric operator tuples on Hilbert spaces in a natural way to normed spaces. This is done by defining a tuple analogue of $(m,p)$-isometric operators, so-called $(m,p)$-isometric operator tuples. We then extend this definition further by introducing $(m,\infty)$-isometric operator tuples and study properties of and relations between these objects.
Let X_1, X_2,..., X_n be a sequence of independent random variables, let M be a rearrangement invariant space on the underlying probability space, and let N be a symmetric sequence space. This paper gives an approximate formula for the quantity || ||(X_i)||_N ||_M whenever L_q embeds into M for some 1 le q < infty. This extends work of Johnson and Schechtman who tackled the case when N = l_p, and recent work of Gordon, Litvak, Schuett and Werner who obtained similar results for Orlicz spaces.
Motivated by recent applications of weighted norm inequalities to maximal regularity of first and second order Cauchy problems, we study real interpolation spaces on the basis of general Banach function spaces and, in particular, weighted rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces. We show equivalence of the trace method and the $K$-method, identify real interpolation spaces between a Banach space and the domain of a sectorial operator, and reprove an extension of Dore's theorem on the boundedness of $H^\infty$-functional calculus to this general setting.
We extend the construction of Garsia-Rodemich spaces in different directions. We show that the new space \textbf{B,} introduced by Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu \cite{bbm}, can be described via a suitable scaling of the Garsia-Rodemich norms. As an application we give a new proof of the embeddings $BMO\subset$ \textbf{B }$\subset$ $L(n^{\prime},\infty).$ We then generalize the Garsia-Rodemich construction and introduce the $GaRo_{X}$ spaces associated with a rearrangement invariant space $X,$ in such a way that $GaRo_{X}=X,$ for a large class of rearrangement invariant spaces. The underlying inequ…
Real smooth three-dimensional or higher Banach spaces are isomorphic with respect to the nonlinear structure of Birkhoff-James orthogonality if and only if they are isometrically isomorphic. Moreover, using smooth Radon planes and non-smooth direct sums, in arbitrary dimensions, we construct examples of non-isometric pairs of real Banach spaces that admit norm-preserving homogeneous bicontinuous Birkhoff-James orthogonality preservers among them.
We investigate the isometric composition operators on the analytic Besov spaces. For $1<p<2$ we show that an isometric composition operator is induced only by a rotation of the disk. For $p>2$, we extend previous work on the subject. Finally, we analyze this same problem for the Besov spaces with an equivalent norm.
We define the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, and relate it to a) the mean ergodic projection on the space of fixed points of a semigroup of contractions, b) results on Korovkin sets from the 70's, and c) extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. We use this concept to address the recent conjecture that the Gurarij space and the spaces $L_p$, $p \notin 2\mathbb N+4$ are the only separable Approximately Ultrahomogeneous Banach spaces (a certain multidimensional transitivity of the action of the linear isometry group). The similar conjecture for Fraïssé B…
Rearrangement-invariance in function spaces can be viewed as a kind of generalization of 1-symmetry for Schauder bases. We define subrearrangement-invariance in function spaces as an analogous generalization of 1-subsymmetry. It is then shown that every rearrangement-invariant function space is also subrearrangement-invariant. Examples are given to demonstrate that not every function space on $(0,\infty)$ admits an equivalent subrearrangement-invariant norm, and that not every subrearrangement-invariant function space on $(0,\infty)$ admits an equivalent rearrangement-invariant norm. The latte…
The classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg interpolation inequality is a well-known estimate which gives, in particular, an estimate for the Lebesgue norm of intermediate derivatives of functions in Sobolev spaces. We present an extension of this estimate into the scale of the general rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces with the proof based on the Maz'ya's pointwise estimates. As corollaries, we present the Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequality for intermediate derivatives in the case of triples of Orlicz spaces and triples of Lorentz spaces. Finally, we promote the scaling argument to validate th…
Let $l_0$ be the group (with respect to the coordinate-wise addition) of all sequences of real numbers $x=(x_k)_{k=1}^\infty$ that are eventually zero, equipped with the quasi-norm $\|x\|_0={\rm card}\{supp\,x\}$. A description of orbits of elements in the pair $(l_0,l_1)$ is given, which complements (in the sequence space setting) the classical Calderón-Mityagin theorem on a description of orbits of elements in the pair $(l_1,l_\infty)$. As a consequence, we obtain that the pair $(l_0,l_1)$ is ${\mathcal K}$-monotone.
Let $E$ be a finite-dimensional normed space and $Ω$ a nonempty convex open set in $E$. We show that the Lipschitz-free space of $Ω$ is canonically isometric to the quotient of $L^1(Ω,E)$ by the subspace consisting of vector fields with zero divergence in the sense of distributions on $E$.
An old problem of P. Levy is to characterize those Banach spaces which embed isometrically in $L_p.$ We show a new criterion in terms of the second derivative of the norm. As an application, we show that if $M$ is a twice differentiable Orlicz function with $M'(0)=M''(0)=0$ then the $n$-dimensional Orlicz space $\ell_M^n,\ n\ge 3,$ does not embed isometrically in $L_p$ with $0<p\le 2.$ These results generalize and clear up the recent solution to the 1938 Schoenberg's problem on positive definite functions.
In this short paper we generalize the classical inequality between the norms in Lebesgue spaces of the functions and its derivatives, which in the multidimensional case are called Sobolev's inequalities, on the many popular classes pairs of rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces, namely, on the so-called moment rearrangement invariant spaces.
A Banach lattice E is called p-disjointly homogeneous, 1< p< infty, when every sequence of pairwise disjoint normalized elements in E has a subsequence equivalent to the unit vector basis of l_p. Employing methods from interpolation theory, we clarify which rearrangement invariant (r.i.) spaces on [0,1] are p-disjointly homogeneous. In particular, for every 1<p< infty and any increasing concave function f on [0,1], which is not equivalent neither 1 nor t, there exists a p-disjointly homogeneous r.i. space with the fundamental function f. Moreover, in the class of all interpolation r.i. spaces …
In Orlicz spaces generated by convex Orlicz functions a family of norms generated by some lattice norms in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ are defined and studied. This family of norms includes the family of the p-Amemiya norms ($1\leq p\leq\infty$) studied in [10-11], [14-15] and [20]. Criteria for strict monotonicity, lower and upper local uniform monotonicities and uniform monotonicities of Orlicz spaces and their subspaces of order continuous elements, equipped with these norms, are given in terms of the generating Orlicz functions, and the lattice norm in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$. The problems of strict convexi…
We introduce a Banach rearrangement invariant (tail) quasy-norm by means of Hardy's (Cesaro) average on the (measurable) functions defined on some measurable space which is a slight generalization of classical Lorentz-Marcinkiewicz norm and find for it an equivalent norm expression.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group with the group algebra $L^1(G)$ and $N$ be a closed normal subgroup of $G$. Suppose that $ξ:N\to\mathbb{T}$ is a continuous character and $L_ξ^1(G,N)$ is the $L^1$-space of all covariant functions of $ξ$ on $G$. We showed that $L^1_ξ(G,N)$ is isometrically isomorphic to a quotient space of $L^1(G)$. It is also proved that the dual space $L^1_ξ(G,N)^*$ is isometrically isomorphic to $L^\infty_ξ(G,N)$.
We investigate the structure of norm-preserving and linear but not necessarily surjective operators on variable-exponent, discrete Lebesgue spaces. A certain class of isometries, novel to this work, are especially considered; this class completely coincides with all isometries when the Lebesgue space is classical, i.e. of a fixed-exponent. For said isometries it is shown that their actions are completely determined by pairs consisting of set-mappings and bounded functions on $\mathbb{N}$. This result recovers the previously-known structure of isometries on fixed-exponent spaces as a special ca…
A metric vector space is asymptotically metrically normable (AMN) if there exists a norm asymptotically isometric to the distance. We prove that AMN vector spaces are rigid in the class of metric vector spaces under asymptotically isometric perturbations. This result follows from a general metric normability criterium. If the distance is translation invariant and satisfies an approximate multiplicative condition then there exists a lipschitz equivalent norm. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the distance to be asymptotically isometric to the norm.
We investigate the relationship between the compactness of embeddings of Sobolev spaces built upon rearrangement-invariant spaces into rearrangement-invariant spaces endowed with $d$-Ahlfors measures under certain restriction on the speed of its decay on balls. We show that the gateway to compactness of such embeddings, while formally describable by means of optimal embeddings and almost-compact embeddings, is quite elusive. It is known that such a Sobolev embedding is not compact when its target space has the optimal fundamental function. We show that, quite surprisingly, such a target space …

Let $X$ be a Banach space, $Σ$ be a $σ$-algebra, and $m:Σ\to X$ be a (countably additive) vector measure. It is a well known consequence of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure that there exist a reflexive Banach space $Y$, a vector measure $\tilde{m}:Σ\to Y$ and an injective operator $J:Y \to X$ such that $m$ factors as $m=J\circ \tilde{m}$. We elaborate some theory of factoring vector measures and their integration operators with the help of the isometric version of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure. Along this way, we sharpen a result of Okad…
Let $φ$ be a holomorphic self-map of a bounded homogeneous domain $D$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$. In this work, we show that the composition operator $C_φ: f\mapsto f\circ φ$ is bounded on the Bloch space $\mathcal{B}$ of the domain and provide estimates on its operator norm. We also give a sufficient condition for $φ$ to induce an isometry on $\cal{B}$. This condition allows us to construct non-trivial examples of isometric composition operators in the case when $D$ has the unit disk as a factor. We then obtain some necessary conditions for $C_φ$ to be an isometry on $\cal{B}$ when $D$ is a Cartan cla…
We show that $\ell_p$ norms are characterized as the unique norms which are both invariant under coordinate permutation and multiplicative with respect to tensor products. Similarly, the $L_p$ norms are the unique rearrangement-invariant norms on a probability space such that $\|X Y\|=\|X\|\cdot\|Y\|$ for every pair $X,Y$ of independent random variables. Our proof relies on Cramér's large deviation theorem.
We show that a Hilbert space bounded linear operator has an $m$-isometric lifting for some integer $m\ge 1$ if and only if the norms of its powers grow polynomially. In analogy with unitary dilations of contractions, we prove that such operators also have an invertible $m$-isometric dilation. We also study $2$-isometric liftings of convex operators and $3$-isometric liftings of Foguel-Hankel operators.
