Let X_1, X_2,..., X_n be a sequence of independent random variables, let M be a rearrangement invariant space on the underlying probability space, and let N be a symmetric sequence space. This paper gives an approximate formula for the quantity || ||(X_i)||_N ||_M whenever L_q embeds into M for some 1 le q < infty. This extends work of Johnson and Schechtman who tackled the case when N = l_p, and recent work of Gordon, Litvak, Schuett and Werner who obtained similar results for Orlicz spaces.

Symmetric Rearrangements Around Infinity with Applications to Levy Processes

We prove a new rearrangement inequality for multiple integrals, which partly generalizes a result of Friedberg and Luttinger (1976) and can be interpreted as involving symmetric rearrangements of domains around infinity. As applications, we prove two comparison results for general Levy processes and their symmetric rearrangements. A Banach rearrangement norm characterization for tail behavior of measurable functions (random variables)

We construct a Banach rearrangement invariant norm on the measurable space for which the finiteness of this norm for measurable function (random variable) is equivalent to suitable tail (heavy tail and light tail) behavior. We investigate also a conjugate to offered spaces and obtain some embedding theorems. Possible applications: Functional Analysis (for instance, interpolation of operators), Integral Equations, Probability Theory and Statistics (tail estimations for random variables).

Random rearrangements and operators

This was considered by Kwapien and Schutt, and we extend their results to rearrangement invariant spaces. We also consider the property of D and D^* convexity for rearrangement invariant spaces.

Estimates for the Square Variation of Partial Sums of Fourier Series and their Rearrangements

We investigate the square variation operator $V^2$ (which majorizes the partial sum maximal operator) on general orthonormal systems (ONS) of size $N$. We prove that the $L^2$ norm of the $V^2$ operator is bounded by $O(\ln(N))$ on any ONS. This result is sharp and refines the classical Rademacher-Menshov theorem. We show that this can be improved to $O(\sqrt{\ln(N)})$ for the trigonometric system, which is also sharp. We prove decoupling inequalities for random polynomials in independent random variables with coefficients in vector space. We use various means of comparison, including rearrangement invariant norms (e.g., Orlicz and Lorentz norms), tail distributions, tightness, hypercontractivity, etc.

Generalization and refinement of Khintchin's inequality

We derive the exponential as well as power decreasing tail estimations for normed sums of centered independent identical distributed (or not) random variables on the Khintchine's form. We consider arbitrary, in particular, non-Rademacher's variables and not only Lebesgue-Riesz rearrangement invariant norms for the random variables. We intend to calculate the value of correspondent limit.
