We show that a Hilbert space bounded linear operator has an $m$-isometric lifting for some integer $m\ge 1$ if and only if the norms of its powers grow polynomially. In analogy with unitary dilations of contractions, we prove that such operators also have an invertible $m$-isometric dilation. We also study $2$-isometric liftings of convex operators and $3$-isometric liftings of Foguel-Hankel operators.
It is well-known that an $n$-tuple $(n\ge 3)$ of commuting contractions does not posses an isometric dilation, in general. Considering a class of $n$-tuple of commuting contractions satisfying certain positivity assumption, we construct their isometric dilations and consequently establish their von Neumann inequality. The positivity assumption is related to Brehmer positivity and motivated by the study of isometric dilations of operator tuples in [4].
Given a bounded operator $Q$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, a pair of bounded operators $(T_1, T_2)$ on $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be $Q$-commuting if one of the following holds: \[ T_1T_2=QT_2T_1 \text{ or }T_1T_2=T_2QT_1 \text{ or }T_1T_2=T_2T_1Q. \] We give an explicit construction of isometric dilations for pairs of $Q$-commuting contractions for unitary $Q$, which generalizes the isometric dilation of Ando [2] for pairs of commuting contractions. In particular, for $Q=qI_{\mathcal{H}}$, where $q$ is a complex number of modulus $1$, this gives, as a corollary, an explicit construction of …
A bounded linear Hilbert space operator $S$ is said to be a $2$-isometry if the operator $S$ and its adjoint $S^*$ satisfy the relation $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I = 0$. In this paper, we study Hilbert space operators having liftings or dilations to $2$-isometries. The adjoint of an operator which admits such liftings is characterized as the restriction of a backward shift on a Hilbert space of vector-valued analytic functions. These results are applied to concave operators (i.e., operators $S$ such that $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I \le 0$) and to operators similar to contractions or isometries…
Let E be a product system of C*-correspondences over N^r. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of a not necessarily regular isometric dilation of a completely contractive representation of E are established and difference between regular and *-regular dilations discussed. It is in particular shown that a minimal isometric dilation is *-regular if and only if it is doubly commuting. The case of product systems associated with higher-rank graphs is analysed in detail.
We present some 2-isometric lifting and extension results for Hilbert space concave operators. For a special class of concave operators we study their Cauchy dual operators and discuss conditions under which these operators are subnormal. In particular, the quasinormality of compressions of such operators is studied.
The celebrated Sz.-Nagy and Foias and Ando theorems state that a single contraction, or a pair of commuting contractions, acting on a Hilbert space always possesses isometric dilation and subsequently satisfies the von Neumann inequality for polynomials in $\mathbb{C}[z]$ or $\mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, respectively. However, in general, neither the existence of isometric dilation nor the von Neumann inequality holds for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions. The goal of this paper is to provide a taste of the isometric dilations, the von Neumann inequality and a sharper version of von …
We show that any bounded analytic semigroup on $L^p$ (with $1<p<\infty$) whose negative generator admits a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with respect to some angle $< π/2$ can be dilated into a bounded analytic semigroup $(R_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on a bigger $L^p$-space in such a way that $R_t$ is a positive contraction for any $t$. We also establish a discrete analogue for Ritt operators and consider the case when $L^p$-spaces are replaced by more general Banach spaces. In connection with these functional calculus issues, we study isometric dilations of bounded continuous representations o…
Given a row contraction of operators on Hilbert space and a family of projections on the space which stabilize the operators, we show there is a unique minimal joint dilation to a row contraction of partial isometries which satisfy natural relations. For a fixed row contraction the set of all dilations forms a partially ordered set with a largest and smallest element. A key technical device in our analysis is a connection with directed graphs. We use a Wold Decomposition for partial isometries to describe the models for these dilations, and discuss how the basic properties of a dilation depend…
Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, w…
A particular case of the fundamental Sz.-Nagy--Foias functional model for a contraction states that a pure contraction always dilates to a pure isometry. We are interested in the similar question for pairs, more precisely: does a pair of commuting pure contractions always dilate to a pair of commuting pure isometries? The purpose of this article is to identify pairs of commuting pure contractions for which the above question has an affirmative answer. Our method is based on an explicit structure of isometric dilation for pure pairs of commuting contractions obtained in a recent work by Das, Sa…
Regular dilation has recently been extended to graph product of $\mathbb{N}$, where having a *-regular dilation is equivalent to having a minimal isometric Nica-covariant dilation. In this paper, we first extend the result to right LCM semigroups, and establish a similar equivalence among *-regular dilation, minimal isometric Nica-covariant dilation, and a Brehmer-type condition. This result can be applied to various semigroups to establish conditions for *-regular dilation.
We take a new look at dilation theory for nonself-adjoint operator algebras. Among the extremal (co)extensions of a representation, there is a special property of being fully extremal. This allows a refinement of some of the classical notions which are important when one moves away from standard examples. We show that many algebras including graph algebras and tensor algebras of C*-correspondences have the semi-Dirichlet property which collapses these notions and explains why they have a better dilation theory. This leads to variations of the notions of commutant lifting and Ando's theorem. Th…
A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe s…
We find an explicit tetrablock isometric dilation for every member $(A_α, B, P)$ of a family of tetrablock contractions indexed by a parameter $α$ in the closed unit disc (only the first operator of the tetrablock contraction depends on the parameter). The dilation space is the same for any member of the family. Explicit dilation for the adjoint tetrablock contraction $(A_α^*, B^*, P^*)$ for every member of the family mentioned above is constructed as well. This example is important because it has been claimed in the literature that this example does not have a dilation. Taking cue from this c…
We introduce a notion called `maximal commuting piece' for tuples of Hilbert space operators. Given a commuting tuple of operators forming a row contraction there are two commonly used dilations in multivariable operator theory. Firstly there is the minimal isometric dilation consisting of isometries with orthogonal ranges and hence it is a noncommuting tuple. There is also a commuting dilation related with a standard commuting tuple on Boson Fock space. We show that this commuting dilation is the maximal commuting piece of the minimal isometric dilation. We use this result to classify all rep…
The fundamental result of B. Sz. Nazy states that every contraction has a coisometric extension and a unitary dilation. The isometric dilation of a contraction on a Hilbert space motivated whether this theory can be extended sensibly to families of operators. It is natural to ask whether this idea can be generalized, where the contraction $T$ is substituted by a commuting $n$-tuples of operators $(S_1,\cdots, S_n)$ acting on some Hilbert space having $Γ_n$ as a spectral set. We derive the necessary conditions for the existence of a $Γ_n$-isometric dilation for $Γ_n$-contractions. Also we discu…
We introduce the notion of $Q$-commuting operators which is a generalization of commuting operators. We prove a generalized version of commutant lifting theorem and Ando's dilation theorem in the context of $Q$-commuting operators.
An operator $T$ is called a 3-isometry if there exists operators $B_1(T^*,T)$ and $B_2(T^*,T)$ such that \[Q(n)=T^{*n}T^n=1+nB_1(T^*,T)+n^2 B_2(T^*,T)\] for all natural numbers $n$. An operator $J$ is a Jordan operator of order $2$ if $J=U+N$ where $U$ is unitary, $N$ is nilpotent order $2$, and $U$ and $N$ commute. An easy computation shows that $J$ is a $3$-isometry and that the restriction of $J$ to an invariant subspace is also a $3$-isometry. Those $3$-isometries which are the restriction of a Jordan operator to an invariant subspace can be identified, using the theory of completely posit…
We obtain intertwining dilation theorems for noncommutative regular domains D_f and noncommutative varieties V_J of n-tuples of operators, which generalize Sarason and Sz.-Nagy--Foias commutant lifting theorem for commuting contractions. We present several applications including a new proof for the commutant lifting theorem for pure elements in the domain D_f (resp. variety V_J) as well as a Schur type representation for the unit ball of the Hardy algebra associated with the variety V_J. We provide Ando type dilations and inequalities for bi-domains D_f \times D_g and bi-varieties V_J \times V…
We continue the study dilation of linear maps on vector spaces introduced by Bhat, De, and Rakshit. This notion is a variant of vector space dilation introduced by Han, Larson, Liu, and Liu. We derive vector space versions of Wold decomposition, Halmos dilation, N-dilation, inter-twining lifting theorem and a variant of Ando dilation. It is noted further that unlike a kind of uniqueness of Halmos dilation of strict contractions on Hilbert spaces, vector space version of Halmos dilation can not be characterized.
The explicit constructions of minimal isometric, and minimal unitary dilations of an arbitrary linear pencil of operators $T(λ)=T_0+λT_1$ consisting of contractions on a separable Hilbert space for $|λ|=1$, which generalize the classical constructions (the case $T_1=0$), are presented. In contrast to the classical case these dilations are essentially non-unique.
Consider a nonzero contraction $T$ and a bounded operator $X$ satisfying $TX=qXT$ for a complex number $q$. There are some interesting results in the literature on $q$-commuting dilation and $q$-commutant lifting of such pair $(T,X)$ when $|q|=1$. Here we improve a few of them to the class of scalars $q$ satisfying $|q|\leq \dfrac{1}{\|T\|}$.
A classical result of Sz.-Nagy asserts that a Hilbert-space contraction operator $T$ can be lifted to an isometry $V$. A more general multivariable setting of recent interest for these ideas is the case where (i) the unit disk is replaced by a certain domain contained in ${\mathbb C}^3$ (called the {\em tetrablock}), (ii) the contraction operator $T$ is replaced by a commutative triple $(T_1, T_2, T)$ of Hilbert-space operators having ${\mathbb E}$ as a spectral set (a tetrablock contraction) . The rational dilation question for this setting is whether a tetrablock contraction $(T_1, T_2, T)$ …
Famous Naimark-Han-Larson dilation theorem for frames in Hilbert spaces states that every frame for a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is image of a Riesz basis under an orthogonal projection from a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_1$ which contains $\mathcal{H}$ isometrically. In this paper, we derive dilation result for p-approximate Schauder frames for separable Banach spaces. Our result contains Naimark-Han-Larson dilation theorem as a particular case.
Isometries played a pivotal role in the development of operator theory, in particular with the theory of contractions and polar decompositions and has been widely studied due to its fundamental importance in the theory of stochastic processes, the intrinsic problem of modeling the general contractive operator via its isometric dilation and many other areas in applied mathematics. In this paper we present some properties of n-quasi-(m;C)-isometric operators. We show that a power of a n-quasi-(m;C)-isometric operator is again a n-quasi-(m;C)-isometric operator and some products and tens
In the article, we find new dilatation results on non-commutative $L_p$ spaces. We prove that any selfadjoint, unital, positive measurable Schur multiplier on some $B(L^2(Σ))$ admits, for all $1\leq p<\infty$, an invertible isometric dilation on some non-commutative $L^p$-space. We obtain a similar result for selfadjoint, unital, completely positive Fourier multiplier on $VN(G)$, when $G$ is a unimodular locally compact group. Furthermore, we establish multivariable versions of these results.
If $T= \big[ T_1 ... T_n\big]$ is a row contraction with commuting entries, and the Arveson dilation is $\tilde T= \big[ \tilde T_1 ... \tilde T_n\big]$, then any operator $X$ commuting with each $T_i$ dilates to an operator $Z$ of the same norm which commutes with each $\tilde T_i$.
In this note, we show that a quasi-free Hilbert module R defined over the polydisk algebra with kernel function k(z, w) admits a unique minimal dilation (actually an isometric co-extension) to the Hardy module over the polydisk if and only if S^{-1}(z, w) k(z, w) is a positive kernel function, where S(z, w) is the Szegö kernel for the polydisk. Moreover, we establish the equivalence of such a factorization of the kernel function and a positivity condition, defined using the hereditary functional calculus, which was introduced earlier by Athavale \cite{Ath} and Ambrozie, Englis and Müller. An e…
There are several proofs of the classical commutant lifting and intertwining lifting theorems in the literature. In this article, we present analogous proofs to a few $Q$-commuting lifting and $Q$-intertwining lifting theorems. We provide several proofs and show explicit constructions of Ando-type dilations for a pair of $Q$-commuting contractions $(T_1,T_2)$ when $Q$ is a bounded operator. We establish a few connections of these results with graph theory.
For a contraction P and a bounded commutant S of P, we seek a solution X of the operator equation S-S*P = (I-P*P)^1/2 X(I-P*P) 1/2, where X is a bounded operator on Ran(I-P*P) 1/2 with numerical radius of X being not greater than 1. A pair of bounded operators (S,P) which has the domain \Gamme = {(z 1 +z 2, z 1z 2) : |z1|{\leq} 1, |z2| {\leq}1} {\subseteq} C2 as a spectral set, is called a \Gamme-contraction in the literature. We show the existence and uniqueness of solution to the operator equation above for a Γ-contraction (S,P). This allows us to construct an explicit Γ-isometric dilation o…
Motivated by a general dilation theory for operator-valued measures, framings and bounded linear maps on operator algebras, we consider the dilation theory of the above objects with special structures. We show that every operator-valued system of imprimitivity has a dilation to a probability spectral system of imprimitivity acting on a Banach space. This completely generalizes a well-kown result which states that every frame representation of a countable group on a Hilbert space is unitarily equivalent to a subrepresentation of the left regular representation of the group. The dilated space in…
Higher-rank graph generalisations of the Popescu-Poisson transform are constructed, allowing us to develop a dilation theory for higher rank operator tuples. These dilations are joint dilations of the families of operators satisfying relations encoded by the graph structure which we call $Λ$-contractions or $Λ$-coisometries. Besides commutant lifting results and characterisations of pure states on higher rank graph algebras several applications to the structure theory of non-selfadjoint graph operator algebras are presented generalising recent results in special cases.
In this paper we continue our investigation concerning the hyperbolic geometry on the noncommutative ball $[B(H)^n]_1^-$, where $B(H)$ is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H$, and its implications to noncommutative function theory. The central object is an intertwining operator $L_{B,A}$ of the minimal isometric dilations of $A, B\in [B(H)^n]_1^-$, which establishes a strong connection between noncommutative hyperbolic geometry on $[B(H)^n]_1^-$ and multivariable dilation theory. The goal of this paper is to study the operator $L_{B,A}$ and its connections to the …
We develop a dilation theory for row contractions subject to constraints determined by sets of noncommutative polynomials. Under natural conditions on the constraints, we have uniqueness for the minimal dilation. A characteristic function is associated with any (constrained) row contraction. For pure constrained row contraction, we show that the characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant and provide a model. We also show that the curvature invariant and Euler characteristic asssociated with a Hilbert module generated by an arbitrary (resp. commuting) row contraction can be express…
The paper discusses a series of results concerning reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, related to the factorization of their kernels. In particular, it is proved that for a large class of spaces isometric multipliers are trivial. One also gives for certain spaces conditions for obtaining a particular type of dilation, as well as a classification of Brehmer type submodules.
In this thesis, we investigate the proof of the Baum-Connes Conjecture with Coefficients for a-$T$-menable groups. We will mostly and essentially follow the argument employed by N. Higson and G. Kasparov in the paper [Nigel Higson and Gennadi Kasparov. $E$-theory and $KK$-theory for groups which act properly and isometrically on Hilbert space. Invent. Math., 144(1):23-74, 2001]. The crucial feature is as follows. One of the most important point of their proof is how to get the Dirac elements (the inverse of the Bott elements) in Equivariant $KK$-Theory. We prove that the group homomorphism use…
A classical result of Sz.-Nagy asserts that a Hilbert space contraction operator $T$ can be dilated to a unitary $\cU$. A more general multivariable setting for these ideas is the setup where (i) the unit disk is replaced by a domain $Ω$ contained in ${\mathbb C}^d$, (ii) the contraction operator $T$ is replaced by a commuting tuple $\bfT = (T_1, \dots, T_d)$ such that $\| r(T_1, \dots, T_d) \|_{\cL(\cH)} \le \sup_{\lam \in Ω} | r(\lam) |$ for all rational functions with no singularities in $\overlineΩ$ and the unitary operator $\cU$ is replaced by an $Ω$-unitary operator tuple, i.e., a commut…
