In this paper we investigate how the volume of hyperbolic manifolds increases under the process of removing a curve, that is, Dehn drilling. If the curve we remove is a geodesic we are able to show that for a certain family of manifolds the volume increase is bounded above by $π\cdot l$ where $l$ is the length of the geodesic drilled. Also we construct examples to show that there is no lower bound to the volume increase in terms of a linear function of a positive power of length and in particular volume increase is not bounded linearly in length.
We give effective bilipschitz bounds on the change in metric between thick parts of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold and its long Dehn fillings. In the thin parts of the manifold, we give effective bounds on the change in complex length of a short closed geodesic. These results quantify the filling theorem of Brock and Bromberg, and extend previous results of the authors from finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds to any tame hyperbolic 3-manifold. To prove the main results, we assemble tools from Kleinian group theory into a template for transferring theorems about finite-volume manifolds into th…
This paper proves explicit bilipschitz bounds on the change in metric between the thick part of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold N and the thick part of any of its long Dehn fillings. Given a bilipschitz constant J > 1 and a thickness constant epsilon > 0, we quantify how long a Dehn filling suffices to guarantee a J-bilipschitz map on epsilon-thick parts. A similar theorem without quantitative control was previously proved by Brock and Bromberg, applying Hodgson and Kerckhoff's theory of cone deformations. We achieve quantitative control by bounding the analytic quantities that control the infi…
Given a hyperbolic 3-manifold M containing an embedded closed geodesic, we estimate the volume of a complete hyperbolic metric on the complement of the geodesic in terms of the geometry of M. As a corollary, we show that the smallest volume orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold has volume >.32 .
If a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3--manifold M has volume at most 1.22 then H_1(M;Z_p) has dimension at most 2 for every prime p not 2 or 7, and H_1(M;Z_2) and H_1(M;Z_7) have dimension at most 3. The proof combines several deep results about hyperbolic 3--manifolds. The strategy is to compare the volume of a tube about a shortest closed geodesic C in M with the volumes of tubes about short closed geodesics in a sequence of hyperbolic manifolds obtained from M by Dehn surgeries on C.
For a compact 3-manifold $N$ with non-empty boundary, Zickert gave a combinatorial formula for computing the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a boundary parabolic representation $π_1(N)\rightarrow \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. In this paper, we introduce a notion of deformed Ptolemy varieties and extend the formula of Zickert to a representation that is not necessarily boundary parabolic. This allows us to compute the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representation of a closed 3-manifold.
Let M be a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold whose cusp shape is quadratic. We show that there exists c=c(M) such that the number of hyperbolic Dehn fillings of M with any given volume v is uniformly bounded by c.
Given a hyperbolic 3-manifold with torus boundary, we bound the change in volume under a Dehn filling where all slopes have length at least 2π. This result is applied to give explicit diagrammatic bounds on the volumes of many knots and links, as well as their Dehn fillings and branched covers. Finally, we use this result to bound the volumes of knots in terms of the coefficients of their Jones polynomials.
Extending earlier work of Tian, we show that if a manifold admits a metric that is almost hyperbolic in a suitable sense, then there exists an Einstein metric that is close to the given metric in the $C^{2,α}$-topology. In dimension $3$ the original manifold only needs to have finite volume, and the volume can be arbitrarily large. Applications include a new proof of the hyperbolization of $3$-manifolds of large Hempel distance yielding some new geometric control on the hyperbolic metric, and an analytic proof of Dehn filling and drilling that allows the filling and drilling of arbitrary many …
Using Ohtsuki's method, we prove the Asymptotic Expansion Conjecture and the Volume Conjecture of the Reshetikhin-Turaev and the Turev-Viro invariants for all hyperbolic $3$-manifolds obtained by doing a Dehn-surgery along the figure-$8$ knot.
Given a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold M of volume V, and a link L in M such that the complement M \ L is hyperbolic, we establish a bound for the systole length of M \ L in terms of V. This extends a result of Adams and Reid, who showed that in the case that M is not hyperbolic, there is a universal bound of 7.35534... . As part of the proof, we establish a bound for the systole length of a non-compact finite volume hyperbolic manifold which grows asymptotically like (4/3)log(V).
Every cusped, finite-volume hyperbolic three-manifold has a canonical decomposition into ideal polyhedra. We study the canonical decomposition of the hyperbolic manifold obtained by filling some (but not all) of the cusps with solid tori: in a broad range of cases, generic in an appropriate sense, this decomposition can be predicted from that of the unfilled manifold. As an example, we treat all hyperbolic fillings on one cusp of the Whitehead link complement.
I calculate optimistically asymptotic behaviors of the WRT SU(2) invariants for the three-manifolds obtained from the figure-eight knot by p-surgeries with p=0,1,2,...,10, from which one can extract volumes and the Chern-Simons invariants of these closed manifolds. I conjecture that this also holds for general closed three-manifolds.
This paper gives a quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem. Applications include the first universal bounds on the number of non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings on a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, and estimates on the changes in volume and core geodesic length during hyperbolic Dehn filling. The proofs involve the construction of a family of hyperbolic cone-manifold structures, using infinitesimal harmonic deformations and analysis of geometric limits.
We introduce and study some deformations of complete finite-volume hyperbolic four-manifolds that may be interpreted as four-dimensional analogues of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling. We construct in particular an analytic path of complete, finite-volume cone four-manifolds $M_t$ that interpolates between two hyperbolic four-manifolds $M_0$ and $M_1$ with the same volume $\frac {8}3π^2$. The deformation looks like the familiar hyperbolic Dehn filling paths that occur in dimension three, where the cone angle of a core simple closed geodesic varies monotonically from $0$ to $2π$. Here, the sin…
We establish a bijective correspondence between the set T(n) of 3-dimensional triangulations with n tetrahedra and a certain class H(n) of relative handlebodies (i.e. handlebodies with boundary loops, as defined by Johannson) of genus n+1. We show that the manifolds in H(n) are hyperbolic (with geodesic boundary, and cusps corresponding to the loops), have least possible volume, and simplest boundary loops. Mirroring the elements of H(n) in their geodesic boundary we obtain a class D(n) of cusped hyperbolic manifolds, previously considered by D. Thurston and the first named author. We show tha…
In their article "The shape of hyperbolic Dehn surgery space," Hodgson and Kerckhoff proved a powerful theorem, half of which they used to make Thurston's Dehn surgery theorem effective. The calculations derived here use both halves of Hodgson and Kerckhoff's theorem to give bounds leading towards a practical algorithm to tell, given two orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds M, N of finite volume, whether or not M is a Dehn filling of N.
We define for each g>=2 and k>=0 a set M_{g,k} of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with $k$ toric cusps and a connected totally geodesic boundary of genus g. Manifolds in M_{g,k} have Matveev complexity g+k and Heegaard genus g+1, and their homology, volume, and Turaev-Viro invariants depend only on g and k. In addition, they do not contain closed essential surfaces. The cardinality of M_{g,k} for a fixed k has growth type g^g. We completely describe the non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of each M in M_{g,k}, showing that, on any cusp of any hyperbolic manifold obtained by partially filling M, the…
We classify all the non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of the complement of the chain-link with 3 components, conjectured to be the smallest hyperbolic 3-manifold with 3 cusps. We deduce the classification of all non-hyperbolic Dehn fillings of infinitely many 1-cusped and 2-cusped hyperbolic manifolds, including most of those with smallest known volume. Among other consequences of this classification, we mention the following: - for every integer n we can prove that there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere having exceptional surgeries n, n+1, n+2, n+3, with n+1, n+2 giving small S…
We enumerate the small-volume manifolds that can be obtained by Dehn filling on Mom-2 and Mom-3 manifolds as defined by Gabai, Meyerhoff, and the author. In so doing we complete the proof that the Weeks manifold is the minimum-volume compact hyperbolic 3-manifold, as well as enumerating the 10 smallest one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
The work of Jorgensen and Thurston shows that there is a finite number N(v) of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with any given volume v. We show that there is an infinite sequence of closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds, obtained by Dehn filling on the figure eight knot complement, that are uniquely determined by their volumes. This gives a sequence of distinct volumes x_i converging to the volume of the figure eight knot complement with N(x_i) = 1 for each i. We also give an infinite sequence of 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds, obtained by Dehn filling one cusp of the (-2,3,8)-pretzel li…
This paper is the second in a series whose goal is to understand the structure of low-volume complete orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Using Mom technology, we prove that any one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume <= 2.848 can be obtained by a Dehn filling on one of 21 cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also show how this result can be used to construct a complete list of all one-cusped hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 2.848 and all closed hyperbolic three-manifolds with volume <= 0.943. In particular, the Weeks manifold is the unique smallest volume closed orientable hyperboli…
We prove that any mapping torus of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with bounded normalized Weil-Petersson translation length contains a finite set of transverse and level closed curves, and drilling out this set of curves results in one of a finite number of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The number of manifolds in the finite list depends only on the bound for normalized translation length. We also prove a complementary result that explains the necessity of removing level curves by producing new estimates for the Weil-Petersson translation length of compositions of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes …
For a single cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold, Hodgson proved that there are only finitely many Dehn fillings of it whose trace fields have bounded degree. In this paper, we conjecture the same for manifolds with more cusps, and give the first positive results in this direction. For example, in the 2-cusped case, if a manifold has linearly independent cusp shapes, we show that the manifold has the desired property. To prove the results, we use the proof of the Bounded Height Conjecture in arithmetic geometry.
A 3-manifold is Haken if it contains a topologically essential surface. The Virtual Haken Conjecture says that every irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group has a finite cover which is Haken. Here, we discuss two interrelated topics concerning this conjecture. First, we describe computer experiments which give strong evidence that the Virtual Haken Conjecture is true for hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We took the complete Hodgson-Weeks census of 10,986 small-volume closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and for each of them found finite covers which are Haken. There are interesting and unexpla…
In this paper we develop a new theory of infinitesimal harmonic deformations for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds with ``tubular boundary''. In particular, this applies to complements of tubes of radius at least $R_0 = \arctanh(1/\sqrt{3}) \approx 0.65848$ around the singular set of hyperbolic cone manifolds, removing the previous restrictions on cone angles. We then apply this to obtain a new quantitative version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem, showing that all generalized Dehn surgery coefficients outside a disc of ``uniform'' size yield hyperbolic structures. Here the size of a…
Let $M$ be a compact oriented three-manifold whose interior is hyperbolic of finite volume. We prove a variation formula for the volume on the variety of representations of $M$ in $\operatorname{SL}_n(\mathbb C)$. Our proof follows the strategy of Reznikov's rigidity when $M$ is closed, in particular we use Fuks' approach to variations by means of Lie algebra cohomology. When $n=2$, we get back Hodgson's formula for variation of volume on the space of hyperbolic Dehn fillings. Our formula also yields the variation of volume on the space of decorated triangulations obtained by Bergeron-Falbel-G…
Let M be an oriented complete hyperbolic n-manifold of finite volume. Using the definition of volume of a representation previously given by the authors in [BucherBurgerIozzi2013] we show that the volume of a representation of the fundamental group of M into the connected component of the isometry group of hyperbolic n-space, properly normalized, takes integer values if n=2m is at least 4. If M is not compact and 3-dimensional, it is known that the volume is not locally constant. In this case we give explicit examples of representations with volume as arbitrary as the volume of hyperbolic mani…
Since the set of volumes of hyperbolic 3-manifolds is well ordered, for each fixed g there is a genus-g surface bundle over the circle of minimal volume. Here, we introduce an explicit family of genus-g bundles which we conjecture are the unique such manifolds of minimal volume. Conditional on a very plausible assumption, we prove that this is indeed the case when g is large. The proof combines a soft geometric limit argument with a detailed Neumann-Zagier asymptotic formula for the volumes of Dehn fillings. Our examples are all Dehn fillings on the sibling of the Whitehead manifold, and we al…
The work of Jørgensen and Thurston shows that there is a finite number N(v) of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with any given volume v. In this paper, we construct examples showing that the number of hyperbolic knot complements with a given volume v can grow at least factorially fast with v. A similar statement holds for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, obtained via Dehn surgery. Furthermore, we give explicit estimates for lower bounds of N(v) in terms of v for these examples. These results improve upon the work of Hodgson and Masai, which describes examples that grow exponentially fast with v…
Let M be an orientable, cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume. We show that the restriction map from a Dehn surgery component in the PSL(2,C)-character variety of M to the character variety of the boundary of M is a birational isomorphism onto its image. This generalises a result by Nathan Dunfield. A key step in our proof is the exactness of Craig Hodgson's volume differential on the eigenvalue variety.
The k-dimensional Dehn (or isoperimetric) function of a group bounds the volume of efficient ball-fillings of k-spheres mapped into k-connected spaces on which the group acts properly and cocompactly; the bound is given as a function of the volume of the sphere. We advance significantly the observed range of behavior for such functions. First, to each non-negative integer matrix P and positive rational number r, we associate a finite, aspherical 2-complex X_{r,P} and calculate the Dehn function of its fundamental group G_{r,P} in terms of r and the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of P. The range o…
Let M be a hyperbolic n-manifold whose cusps have torus cross-sections. In arXiv:0901.0056, the authors constructed a variety of nonpositively and negatively curved spaces as "2π-fillings" of M by replacing the cusps of M with compact "partial cones" of their boundaries. These 2π-fillings are closed pseudomanifolds, and so have a fundamental class. We show that the simplicial volume of any such 2π-filling is positive, and bounded above by Vol(M)/v_n, where v_n is the volume of a regular ideal hyperbolic n-simplex. This result generalizes the fact that hyperbolic Dehn filling of a 3-manifold do…
We show that the cusp volume of a hyperbolic alternating knot can be bounded above and below in terms of the twist number of an alternating diagram of the knot. This leads to diagrammatic estimates on lengths of slopes, and has some applications to Dehn surgery. Another consequence is that there is a universal lower bound on the cusp density of hyperbolic alternating knots.
We derive bounds on the length of the meridian and the cusp volume of hyperbolic knots in terms of the topology of essential surfaces spanned by the knot. We provide an algorithmically checkable criterion that guarantees that the meridian length of a hyperbolic knot is below a given bound. As applications we find knot diagrammatic upper bounds on the meridian length and the cusp volume of hyperbolic adequate knots and we obtain new large families of knots with meridian lengths bounded above by four. We also discuss applications of our results to Dehn surgery.
Since there is no hyperbolic Dehn filling theorem for higher dimensions, it is challenging to construct explicit hyperbolic manifolds of small volume in dimension at least four. Here, we build up closed hyperbolic 4-manifolds of volume $\frac{34π^2}{3}\cdot 16$ by using the small cover theory. In particular, we classify all of the orientable four-dimensional small covers over the right-angled 120-cell up to homeomorphism; these are all with even intersection forms.
In this paper we deepen the analysis of certain classes M_{g,k} of hyperbolic 3-manifolds that were introduced in a previous work by B. Martelli, C. Petronio and the author. Each element of M_{g,k} is an oriented complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact connected geodesic boundary of genus g and k cusps. We study small deformations of the complete hyperbolic structure of manifolds in M_{g,k} via a close analysis of their geodesic triangulations. We prove that several elements in M_{g,k} admit non-homeomorphic hyperbolic Dehn fillings sharing the same volume, homology, cusp vol…
We view closed orientable 3-manifolds as covers of S^3 branched over hyperbolic links. For a p-fold cover M \to S^3, branched over a hyperbolic link L, we assign the complexity p Vol(S^3 minus L) (where Vol is the hyperbolic volume). We define an invariant of 3-manifolds, called the link volume and denoted LV, that assigns to a 3-manifold M the infimum of the complexities of all possible covers M \to S^3, where the only constraint is that the branch set is a hyperbolic link. Thus the link volume measures how efficiently M can be represented as a cover of S^3. We study the basic properties of t…
This paper gives the first explicit, two-sided estimates on the cusp area of once-punctured torus bundles, 4-punctured sphere bundles, and 2-bridge link complements. The input for these estimates is purely combinatorial data coming from the Farey tesselation of the hyperbolic plane. The bounds on cusp area lead to explicit bounds on the volume of Dehn fillings of these manifolds, for example sharp bounds on volumes of hyperbolic closed 3-braids in terms of the Schreier normal form of the associated braid word. Finally, these results are applied to derive relations between the Jones polynomial …
This paper proves a theorem about Dehn surgery using a new theorem about PSL(2, C) character varieties. Confirming a conjecture of Boyer and Zhang, this paper shows that a small hyperbolic knot in a homotopy sphere having a non-trivial cyclic slope r has an incompressible surface with non-integer boundary slope strictly between r-1 and r+1. A corollary is that any small knot which has only integer boundary slopes has Property P. The proof uses connections between the topology of the complement of the knot, M, and the PSL(2, C) character variety of M that were discovered by Culler and Shalen. T…
This paper contains a purely topological theorem and a geometric application. The topological theorem states that if M is a simple closed orientable 3-manifold such that π_1(M) contains a genus g surface group and H_1(M;Z/2Z) has rank at least 4g-1 then M contains a closed incompressible surface of genus at most g. This result should be viewed as an analogue of Dehn's Lemma for π_1-injective singular surfaces. The geometric application states that if M is a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume less than 3.08 then the rank of H_1(M;Z/2Z) is at most 6. The proof of the geometric t…
We extend Matveev's complexity of 3-manifolds to PL compact manifolds of arbitrary dimension, and we study its properties. The complexity of a manifold is the minimum number of vertices in a simple spine. We study how this quantity changes under the most common topological operations (handle additions, finite coverings, drilling and surgery of spheres, products, connected sums) and its relations with some geometric invariants (Gromov norm, spherical volume, volume entropy, systolic constant). Complexity distinguishes some homotopically equivalent manifolds and is positive on all closed aspheri…
We prove the Turaev-Viro invariants volume conjecture for a "universal" class of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds that produces all 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary by Dehn filling. This leads to two-sided bounds on the volume of any hyperbolic 3-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary in terms of the growth rate of the Turaev-Viro invariants of the complement of an appropriate link contained in the manifold. We also provide evidence for a conjecture of Andersen, Masbaum and Ueno (AMU conjecture) about certain quantum representations of surface mapping class groups. A key step in our …
We establish a relation between the "large r" asymptotics of the Turaev-Viro invariants $TV_r$ and the Gromov norm of 3-manifolds. We show that for any orientable, compact 3-manifold $M$, with (possibly empty) toroidal boundary, $\log |TV_r (M)|$ is bounded above by a function linear in $r$ and whose slope is a positive universal constant times the Gromov norm of $M$. The proof combines TQFT techniques, geometric decomposition theory of 3-manifolds and analytical estimates of $6j$-symbols. We obtain topological criteria that can be used to check whether the growth is actually exponential; that…
Let M be a hyperbolic 3-manifold with nonempty totally geodesic boundary. We prove that there are upper and lower bounds on the diameter of the skinning map of M that depend only on the volume of the hyperbolic structure with totally geodesic boundary, answering a question of Y. Minsky. This is proven via a filling theorem, which states that as one performs higher and higher Dehn fillings, the skinning maps converge uniformly on all of Teichmuller space. We also exhibit manifolds with totally geodesic boundaries whose skinning maps have diameter tending to infinity, as well as manifolds whose …
In our Novi Sad conference paper (1999) we described Dehn type surgeries of the famous Gieseking (1912) hyperbolic ideal simplex manifold $\mathcal{S}$, leading to compact fundamental domain $\mathcal{S}(k)$, $k = 2, 3, \dots$ with singularity geodesics of rotation order $k$, but as later turned out with cone angle $2(k-1)/k$. We computed also the volume of $S(k)$, tending to zero if $k$ goes to infinity. That time we naively thought that we obtained orbifolds with the above surprising property. As the reviewer of Math. Rev., Kevin P. Scannell (MR1770996 (2001g:57030)) rightly remarked, "this …
