This paper is a continuation of our papers [EK1, EK2]. In [EK2] we showed that for the root system A_n-1 one can obtain Macdonald's polynomials - a new interesting class of symmetric functions recently defined by I. Macdonald {M1] - as weighted traces of intertwining operators between certain finite-dimensional representations of U_q sl_n. The main goal of the present paper is to use this construction to give a representation-theoretic proof of Macdonald's inner product and symmetry identities for the root system A_n-1. Macdonald's inner product identities (see [M2]) have been proved by combinatorial methods my Macdonald ([Macdonald, private communication]).
We derive generalizations of the Cherednik-Macdonald constant term identities associated to root systems which depend, besides on the usual multiplicity function, symmetrically on two quasi-periods. They are natural analogues of the Cherednik-Macdonald constant term q-identities in which the deformation parameter q is allowed to have modulus one. They unite the Cherednik-Macdonald constant term q-identities with closely related Jackson p-integral identities due to Macdonald, where the deformation parameter p is related to q by modular inversion.
In this note we give a short proof of Cherednik's generalization of Macdonald-Mehta identities for the root system $A_{n-1}$ using the representation theory of quantum groups. These identities, suggested and proved by Cherednik, give an explicit formula for the integral of a product of Macdonald polynomials with respect to a ``difference analogue of the Gaussian measure''.
This paper is a continuation of our papers \cite{EK1, EK2}. In \cite{EK2} we showed that for the root system $A_{n-1}$ one can obtain Macdonald's polynomials as weighted traces of intertwining operators between certain finite-dimensional representations of $U_q(sl_n)$. The main goal of the present paper is to use this construction to give a representation-theoretic proof of Macdonald's inner product and symmetry identities for the root system $A_{n-1}$. The proofs are based on the techniques of ribbon graphs developed by Reshetikhin and Turaev. We also use the symmetry identities to derive rec…
We motivate and prove a series of identities which form a generalization of the Euler's pentagonal number theorem, and are closely related to specialized Macdonald's identities for powers of the Dedekind $η$--function. More precisely, we show that what we call ``denominator formula'' for the Virasoro algebra has ``higher analogue'' for all $c_{s,t}$-minimal models. We obtain one identity per series which is in agreement with features of conformal field theory such as {\em fusion} and {\em modular invariance} that require all the irreducible modules of the series. In particular, in the case of …
Elliptic Macdonald polynomials of sl(2)-type and level 2 are introduced. Suitable limits of elliptic Macdonald polynomials are the standard Macdonald polynomials and conformal blocks. Identities for elliptic Macdonald polynomials, in particular their modular properties, are studied.
We propose and prove a set of identities for ${\rm GL}_M$ elliptic $R$-matrix (in the fundamental representation). In the scalar case ($M=1$) these are elliptic function identities derived by S.N.M. Ruijsenaars as necessary and sufficient conditions for his kernel identity underlying construction of integral solutions to quantum spinless Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. In this respect the result of the present paper can be considered as the first step towards constructing solutions of quantum eigenvalue problem for the anisotropic spin Ruijsenaars model.
We establish orthogonality relations for the Baker-Akhiezer (BA) eigenfunctions of the Macdonald difference operators. We also obtain a version of Cherednik-Macdonald-Mehta integral for these functions. As a corollary, we give a simple derivation of the norm identity and Cherednik-Macdonald-Mehta integral for Macdonald polynomials. In the appendix written by the first author, we prove a summation formula for BA functions. We also consider more general identities of Cherednik type, which we use to introduce and construct more general, twisted BA functions. This leads to a construction of new qu…
We provide elementary identities relating the three known types of non-symmetric interpolation Macdonald polynomials. In addition we derive a duality for non-symmetric interpolation Macdonald polynomials. We consider some applications of these results, in particular for binomial formulas involving non-symmetric interpolation Macdonald polynomials.
Kajihara obtained in 2004 a remarkable transformation formula connecting multiple basic hypergeometric series associated with $A$-type root systems of different ranks. By multiple principle specialisations of his formula, we deduce kernel identities for deformed Macdonald-Ruijsenaars (MR) and Noumi-Sano (NS) operators. The deformed MR operators were introduced by Sergeev and Veselov in the first order case and by Feigin and Silantyev in the higher order cases. As applications of our kernel identities, we prove that all of these operators pairwise commute and are simultaneously diagonalised by …
Let Sym denote the algebra of symmetric functions and $P_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ and $Q_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$ be the Macdonald symmetric functions (recall that they differ by scalar factors only). The $(q,t)$-Cauchy identity $$ \sum_μP_μ(x_1,x_2,\dots;q,t)Q_μ(y_1,y_2,\dots;q,t)=\prod_{i,j=1}^\infty\frac{(x_iy_jt;q)_\infty}{(x_iy_j;q)_\infty} $$ expresses the fact that the $P_μ(\,\cdot\,;q,t)$'s form an orthogonal basis in Sym with respect to a special scalar product $\langle\,\cdot\,,\,\cdot\,\rangle_{q,t}$. The present paper deals with the inhomogeneous \emph{interpolation} Macdonald symmetric function…
We study Macdonald polynomials from a basic hypergeometric series point of view. In particular, we show that the Pieri formula for Macdonald polynomials and its recently discovered inverse, a recursion formula for Macdonald polynomials, both represent multivariable extensions of the terminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation formula. We derive several new related identities including multivariate extensions of Jackson's very-well-poised 8-phi-7 summation. Motivated by our basic hypergeometric analysis, we propose an extension of Macdonald polynomials to Macdonald symmetric functions indexe…
We prove a q-series identity that generalises Macdonald's A_{2n}^{(2)} eta-function identity and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We conjecture our result to generalise even further to also include the Andrews-Gordon identities.
We define the analogue of Jack's (Jacobi) polynomials, which were defined for finite-dimensional root system by Heckman and Opdam as eigenfunctions of trigonometric Sutherland operator for the affine root system $\hat A_{n-1}$. In the affine case, we define the polynomials as eigenfunctions of "affine Sutherland operator", which is Calogero-Sutherland operator with elliptic potential plus the term involving derivative with respect to the modular parameter. We show that such polynomials can be constructed explicitly as traces of certain intertwiners for affine Lie algebra. Also, we define the q…
We give a new representation-theoretic proof of the branching rule for Macdonald polynomials using the Etingof-Kirillov Jr. expression for Macdonald polynomials as traces of intertwiners of U_q(gl_n). In the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis, we show that diagonal matrix elements of such intertwiners are given by application of Macdonald's operators to a simple kernel. An essential ingredient in the proof is a map between spherical parts of double affine Hecke algebras of different ranks based upon the Dunkl-Kasatani conjecture.
This is the second part of the paper (the first part is published in Jour. of AMS, vol.9, 1135--1170, q-alg/9508017). In the first part, we defined for every modular tensor category (MTC) inner products on the spaces of morphisms and proved that the inner product on the space $\Hom (\bigoplus X_i\otimes X^*_i, U)$ is modular invariant. Also, we have shown that in the case of the MTC arising from the representations of the quantum group $U_q \sln$ at roots of unity and $U$ being a symmetric power of the fundamental representation, this inner product coincides with so-called Macdonald's inner pr…
We establish a connection between a specialization of the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials and the Demazure characters of the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra. This allows us to obtain a representation-theoretical interpretation of the coefficients of the expansion of the specialized symmetric Macdonald polynomials in the basis formed by the irreducible characters of the associated finite Lie algebra.
Let $Φ:V\to V\otimes U$ be an intertwining operator between representations of a simple Lie algebra (quantum group, affine Lie algebra). We define its generalized character to be the following function on the Cartan subalgebra with values in $U$: $χ_Φ(h)=\Tr_V (Φe^h)$. These generalized characters are a rich source of special functions, possessing many interesting properties; for example, they are common eigenfunctions of a family of commuting differential (difference) operators. We show that the special functions that can be obtained this way include Macdonald's polynomials of type $A$, and t…
The clustering properties of Jack polynomials are relevant in the theoretical study of the fractional Hall states. In this context, some factorization properties have been conjectured for the $(q,t)$-deformed problem involving Macdonald polynomials. The present paper is devoted to the proof of this formula. To this aim we use four families of Jack/Macdonald polynomials: symmetric homogeneous, nonsymmetric homogeneous, shifted symmetric and shifted nonsymmetric.
Let $K(q,t)= \|K_{\laμ}(q,t)\|_{\la,μ}$ be the Macdonald q,t-Kostka matrix and $K(t)=K(0,t)$ be the matrix of the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials K_{\laμ}(t). In this paper we present a new proof of the polynomiality of the q,t-Kostka coefficients that is both short and elementary. More precisely, we derive that $K(q,t)$ has entries in \ZZ[q,t] directly from the fact that the matrix $K(t)^{-1}$ has entries in \ZZ[t]. The proof uses only identities that can be found in the original paper [7] of Macdonald.
In this paper, we give a combinatorial realization of the crystal basis of a quantum Weyl module over a quantum affine algebra of type $A_{2n}^{(2)}$, and a representation-theoretic interpretation of the specialization $P_λ^{A_{2n}^{(2)}} (q,0)$ of the symmetric Macdonald polynomial $P_λ^{A_{2n}^{(2)}} (q,t)$ at $t=0$, where $λ$ is a dominant weight and $P_λ^{A_{2n}^{(2)}}(q,t)$ denotes the specific specialization of the symmetric Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomial $P_λ(q,t_1, t_2, t_3, t_4, t_5)$. More precisely, as some results for untwisted affine types, the set of all ($A_{2n}^{(2)}$-type) q…
In this paper, we give a representation-theoretic interpretation of the specialization $E_{w_{\circ} λ} (q,\infty)$ of the nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomial $E_{w_{\circ} λ}(q,t)$ at $t=\infty$ in terms of the Demazure submodule $V_{w_\circ}^{-} (λ)$ of the level-zero extremal weight module $V(λ)$ over a quantum affine algebra of an arbitrary untwisted type, here, $λ$ is a dominant integral weight, and $w_{\circ}$ denotes the longest element in the finite Weyl group $W$. Also, for each $x \in W$, we obtain a combinatorial formula for the specialization $E_{x λ} (q, \infty)$ at $t=\infty$ of th…
This work studies the remarkable relationships that hold among certain m-tuples of the Garsia-Haiman modules $ {\bf M}_μ$ and corresponding elements of the Macdonald basis. We recall that ${\bf M}_μ$ is defined for a partition $μ\part n$, as the linear span of derivatives of a certain bihomogeneous polynomial $Δ_ μ(x,y)$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,..., x_n, y_1,y_2,..., y_n$. It has been conjectured by Garsia and Haiman that ${\bf M}_μ$ has $n!$ dimensions and that its bigraded Frobenius characteristic is given by the symmetric polynomial ${\widetilde{H}}_μ(x;q,t)=\sum_{λ\part n} S_λ(X) {\widet…
We introduce the (global) q-Whittaker function as the limit at t=0 of the q,t-spherical function extending the symmetric Macdonald polynomials to arbitrary eigenvalues. The construction heavily depends on the technique of the q-Gaussians developed by the author (and Stokman in the non-reduced case). In this approach, the q-Whittaker function is given by a series convergent everywhere, a kind of generating function for multi-dimensional q-Hermite polynomials (closely related to the level 1 Demazure characters). One of the applications is a q-version of the Shintani- Casselman- Shalika formula, …
The lattice cell in the ${i+1}^{st}$ row and ${j+1}^{st}$ column of the positive quadrant of the plane is denoted $(i,j)$. If $μ$ is a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the (French) Ferrers diagram of $μ$. We set $Δ_{μ/ij}=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|_{i,j=1}^n$, where $(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)$ are the cells of $μ/ij$, and let ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ be the linear span of the partial derivatives of $Δ_{μ/ij}$. The bihomogeneity of $Δ_{μ/ij}$ and its alternating nature under the diagonal action of $S_n$ gives ${\bf M}_{μ/ij}$ the structure…
We establish the equality of the specialization $P_λ(x;q,0)$ of the Macdonald polynomial at $t=0$ with the graded character $X_λ(x;q)$ of a tensor product of "single-column" Kirillov-Reshetikhin (KR) modules for untwisted affine Lie algebras. This is achieved by constructing two uniform combinatorial models for the crystals associated with the mentioned tensor products: the quantum alcove model (which is naturally associated to Macdonald polynomials), and the quantum Lakshmibai-Seshadri path model. We provide an explicit affine crystal isomorphism between the two models, and realize the energy…
We generalize the theory of linked partition ideals due to Andrews using finite automata in formal language theory and apply it to prove three Rogers--Ramanujan type identities of modulo 14 that were posed by Nandi through vertex operator theoretic construction of the level 4 standard modules of the affine Lie algebra $A^{(2)}_{2}$.
In this paper we study modular tensor categories (braided rigid balanced tensor categories with additional finiteness and non-degeneracy conditions), in particular, representations of quantum groups at roots of unity. We show that the action of modular group on certain spaces of morphisms in MTC is unitary with respect to the natural inner product on these spaces. In a special case of category based on representations of the quantum group U_q sl_n at roots of unity we show that in some of these spaces of morphisms (for U_q sl_2, in all of them) the action of modular group can be written in ter…
We establish new properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which are symmetric polynomials generalizing $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We show that these polynomials are defined in terms of a vertex model, whose weights come not from an $R$-matrix, as is often the case, but from other intertwining operators of $U'_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules. Using this construction, we are able to prove a Cauchy-type identity for inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in full generality. Moreover, we are able to characterize spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in terms of vanishing at c…
A representation-theoretic approach to special functions was developed in the 40-s and 50-s in the works of I.M.Gelfand, M.A.Naimark, N.Ya.Vilenkin, and their collaborators. The essence of this approach is the fact that most classical special functions can be obtained as suitable specializations of matrix elements or characters of representations of groups. Another rich source of special functions is the theory of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients which describes the geometric juxtaposition of irreducible components inside the tensor product of two representations. Finally, in recent works on repres…
