Let $X$ be a (real or complex) rearrangement-in\-va\-riant function space on $\Om$ (where $\Om = [0,1]$ or $\Om \subseteq \bbN$) whose norm is not proportional to the $L_2$-norm. Let $H$ be a separable Hilbert space. We characterize surjective isometries of $X(H).$ We prove that if $T$ is such an isometry then there exist Borel maps $a:\Om\to\bbK$ and $σ:\Om\lra\Om$ and a strongly measurable operator map $S$ of $\Om$ into $\calB(H)$ so that for almost all $\om$ $S(\om)$ is a surjective isometry of $H$
and for any $f\in X(H)$ $$Tf(\om)=a(\om)S(\om)(f(σ(\om))) \text{ a.e.}$$
As a consequence we obtain a new proof of characterization of surjective isometries in complex rearrangement-invariant function spaces.
In this paper, we investigate the general form of surjective (not necessarily linear) isometries T : A-> B between subspaces A and B of C(X;E) and C(Y;F), respectively.
We propose a unified approach to the study of isometries on algebras of vector-valued Lipschitz maps and those of continuously differentiable maps by means of the notion of admissible quadruples. We describe isometries on function spaces of some admissible quadruples that take values in unital commutative $C^*$-algebras. As a consequence we confirm the statement of \cite[Example 8]{jp} on Lipschitz algebras and show that isometries on such algebras indeed take the canonical form.
We propose a unified approach to the study of isometries on algebras of vector-valued Lipschitz maps and those of continuously differentiable maps by means of the notion of natural $C(Y)$-valuezations that take values in unital commutative $C^*$-algebras. A precise proof of a theorem of Jarosz \cite{ja} is exhibited.
Under the right conditions on a compact metric space $X$ and on a Banach space $E$, we give a description of the $2$-local (standard) isometries on the Banach space $\hbox{Lip}(X,E)$ of vector-valued Lipschitz functions from $X$ to $E$ in terms of a generalized composition operator, and we study when every $2$-local (standard) isometry on $\hbox{Lip}(X,E)$ is both linear and surjective.
The aim of this paper is to show that two accessible subspaces in the Loynes $\mathcal{Z}$ - space $\Hc$ are the initial and final space of a partial gramian isometry, respectively if the norm of the difference of the associated gramian selfadjoint projections is strictly less than 1.
In this paper, the notions of first-order and second-order generalized linear spans and index set are defined. Moreover, their properties are investigated and applied to the studies of extension of isometries. We develop the theory of extending the domain of local isometries to the generalized linear spans, where we call an isometry defined in a subset of a Hilbert space a local isometry. In addition, we prove that the domain of local isometry can be extended to any real Hilbert space, where the domain of local isometry does not have to be a convex body or an open set. This indicates that the …
In the recent paper \cite{Hos}, surjective isometries, not necessarily linear, $T: {\rm AC}(X,E) \longrightarrow {\rm AC}(Y,F)$ between vector-valued absolutely continuous functions on compact subsets $X$ and $Y$ of the real line, has been described. The target spaces $E$ and $F$ are strictly convex normed spaces. In this paper, we assume that $X$ and $Y$ are compact Hausdorff spaces and $E$ and $F$ are normed spaces, which are not assumed to be strictly convex. We describe (with a short proof) surjective isometries $T: (A,\|\cdot\|_A) \longrightarrow (B,\|\cdot\|_B)$ between certain normed su…
We obtain the admissible sets on the unit circle to be the spectrum of a strict $m$-isometry on an $n$-finite dimensional Hilbert space. This property gives a better picture of the correct spectrum of an $m$-isometry. We determine that the only $m$-isometries on $\mathbb{R}^2$ are $3$-isometries and isometries giving by $\pm I+Q$, where $Q$ is a nilpotent operator. Moreover, on real Hilbert space, we obtain that $m$-isometries preserve volumes. Also we present a way to construct a strict $(m+1)$-isometry with an $m$-isometry given, using ideas of Aleman and Suciu \cite[Proposition 5.2]{AS} on …
In this paper, first we study surjective isometries (not necessarily linear) between completely regular subspaces $A$ and $B$ of $C_0(X,E)$ and $C_0(Y,F)$ where $X$ and $Y$ are locally compact Hausdorff spaces and $E$ and $F$ are normed spaces, not assumed to be neither strictly convex nor complete. We show that for a class of normed spaces $F$ satisfying a new defined property related to their $T$-sets, such an isometry is a (generalized) weighted composition operator up to a translation. Then we apply the result to study surjective isometries between $A$ and $B$ whenever $A$ and $B$ are equi…
In this paper we extend results by De la Harpe concerning the isometries of strictly convex Hilbert geometries, and the characterisation of the isometry groups of Hilbert geometries on finite dimensional simplices, to infinite dimensions. The proofs rely on a mix of geometric and functional analytic methods.
In this article, we study the geometry of an infinite dimensional Hyperbolic space. We will consider the group of isometries of the Hilbert ball equipped with the Carath$\acute{e}$odory metric and learn about some special subclasses of this group. We will also find some unitary equivalence condition and compute some cardinalities.
We show that pure strongly continuous semigroups of adjointable isometries on a Hilbert C*-module are standard right shifts. By counter examples, we illustrate that the analogy of this result with the classical result on Hilbert spaces by Sz.-Nagy, cannot be improved further to understand arbitrary isometry semigroups of isometries in the classical way.
Let $\{T(t)\}_{t\ge 0}$ be a $C_0$-semigroup on a separable Hilbert space $H$. We characterize that $T(t)$ is an $m$-isometry for every $t$ in terms that the mapping $t\in \Bbb R^+ \rightarrow \|T(t)x\|^2$ is a polynomial of degree less than $m$ for each $x\in H$. This fact is used to study $m$-isometric right translation semigroup on weighted $L^p$-spaces. We characterize the above property in terms of conditions on the infinitesimal generator operator or in terms of the cogenerator operator of $\{ T(t)\}_{t\geq 0}$. Moreover, we prove that a non-unitary $2$-isometry on a Hilbert space satisf…
The aim of the present paper is, firstly we study the concepts of (m, (q_1, ..., q_d))- partial isometries on a Hilbert space, secondly, we introduce the notion of m- invertibility of tuples of operators as a natural generalization of the m-invertibility in single variable operators.
In this paper we characterize the surjective linear variation norm isometries on JB-algebras. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Consequently, we characterize the Hilbert's metric isometries on cones in JB-algebras.
In this paper we describe the surjective linear isometries on a vector valued little Bloch space with range space a strictly convex and smooth complex Banach space. We also describe the hermitian operators and the generalized bi-circular projections supported by these spaces.
We describe all isometries of the $q$-numerical radius on the space ${\mathcal K}(\mathcal H)$ of compact operators on a (possibly infinite-dimensional) Hilbert space $\mathcal H$.
The purpose of the present paper is to pursue further study of a class of linear bounded operators, known as n-quasi-m-isometric operators acting on an infinite complex separable Hilbert space H. This generalizes the class of m-isometric operators on Hilbert space introduced by Agler and Stankus in [1]. The class of n-quasi-m-isometric operators was defined by S. Mecheri and T. Prasad in [18] , where they have given some of their properties. Based, mainly, on [2], [3], [5] and [9], we contribute some other properties of such operators.
In this paper, we prove that the existence of an $\varepsilon$-isometry from a separable Banach space $X$ into $Y$ (the James space or a reflexive space) implies the existence of a linear isometry from $X$ into $Y$. Then we present a set valued mapping version lemma on non-surjective $\varepsilon$-isometries of Banach spaces. Using the above results, we also discuss the rotundity and smoothness of Banach spaces under the perturbation by $\varepsilon$-isometries.
We study Banach spaces whose group of isometries acts micro-transitively on the unit sphere. We introduce a weaker property, which one-complemented subspaces inherit, that we call uniform micro-semitransitivity. We prove a number of results about both micro-transitive and uniformly micro-semitransitive spaces, including that they are uniformly convex and uniformly smooth, and that they form a self-dual class. To this end, we relate the fact that the group of isometries acts micro-transitively with a property of operators called the pointwise Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property and use some known r…
Let $Γ$ be an infinite set equipped with the discrete topology. We prove that the space $\ell_{\infty}(Γ),$ of all complex-valued bounded functions on $Γ$, satisfies the Mazur-Ulam property, that is, every surjective isometry from the unit sphere of $\ell_{\infty}(Γ)$ onto the unit sphere of an arbitrary complex Banach space $X$ admits a unique extension to a surjective real linear isometry from $\ell_{\infty}(Γ)$ to $X$.
The convex cone $SC_{\mathrm{SLip}}^1(\mathcal{X})$ of real-valued smooth semi-Lipschitz functions on a Finsler manifold $\mathcal{X}$ is an order-algebraic structure that captures both the differentiable and the quasi-metric feature of $\mathcal{X}$. In this work we show that the subset of smooth semi-Lipschitz functions of constant strictly less than $1$, denoted $SC_{1^{-}}^1(\mathcal{X})$, can be used to classify Finsler manifolds and to characterize almost isometries between them, in the lines of the classical Banach-Stone and Mykers-Nakai theorems.
Let $T\in B(H)$ be a bounded linear operator on a Hilbert space $H$, let $T = V|T|$ be its polar decomposition of $T$ and let $λ\in [0,1]$. The $λ$-Aluthge transform $Δ_λ(T)$ and the mean transforms $M(T)$ are defined respectively by: \[Δ_λ(T):=|T|^λV|T|^{1-λ} \;\; \text{and} \;\; M(T):=\frac12(|T|V+V|T|).\] In this paper, we use several examples of weighted shift operators to prove that the Aluthge and mean transforms do not preserve the class of $m-$isometries in any directions.
This paper is devoted to the study of vector valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. We focus on reproducing kernels in vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. In particular we extend reproducing kernels to relative reproducing kernels and prove some theorems in this subject.
A bounded linear Hilbert space operator $S$ is said to be a $2$-isometry if the operator $S$ and its adjoint $S^*$ satisfy the relation $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I = 0$. In this paper, we study Hilbert space operators having liftings or dilations to $2$-isometries. The adjoint of an operator which admits such liftings is characterized as the restriction of a backward shift on a Hilbert space of vector-valued analytic functions. These results are applied to concave operators (i.e., operators $S$ such that $S^{*2}S^{2} - 2 S^{*}S + I \le 0$) and to operators similar to contractions or isometries…
This paper deals with representing in concrete fashion those Hilbert spaces that are vector subspaces of the Hardy spaces $H^p(\bb D^n) \ (1\le p\le \infty)$ that remain invariant under the action of coordinate wise multiplication by an $n$-tuple $(T_{B_1},\dots, T_{B_n})$ of operators where each $B_i, \ 1\le i\le n,$ is a finite Blaschke factor on the open unit disc. The critical point to be noted is that these $T_{B_i}$ are assumed to be weaker than isometries as operators. Thus our main theorem extends the principal result of \cite{LS} in the following three directions: $(i)$ from one to se…
We show that the transformations of Grassmannians (of complex Hilbert spaces) induced by linear or conjugate-linear isometries can be characterized as transformations preserving some of principal angles (corresponding to the orthogonality, adjacency and ortho-adjacency relations).
Botelho, Jamison, and Molnár \cite{BJM}, and Geh\' er and Šemrl \cite{GeS} have recently described the general form of surjective isometries of Grassmann spaces of all projections of a fixed finite rank on a Hilbert space $H$. As a straightforward consequence one can characterize surjective isometries of Grassmann spaces of projections of a fixed finite corank. In this paper we solve the remaining structural problem for surjective isometries on the set $P_\infty (H)$ of all projections of infinite rank and infinite corank when $H$ is separable. The proof technique is entirely different from th…
We consider cyclic $m$-isometries on a complex separable Hilbert space. Such operators are characterized in terms of shifts on abstract spaces of weighted Dirichlet type. Our results resemble those of Agler and Stankus, but our model spaces are described in terms of Dirichlet integrals rather than analytic Dirichlet operators. The chosen point of view allows us to construct a variety of examples. An interesting feature among all of these is that the corresponding model spaces are contained in a certain subspace of the Hardy space $H^2$, depending only on the order of the corresponding operator…
We study several notions of boundedness for operators. It is known that any power bounded operator is absolutely Cesàro bounded and strong Kreiss bounded (in particular, uniformly Kreiss bounded). The converses do not hold in general. In this note, we give examples of topologically mixing absolutely Cesàro bounded operators on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N})$, $1\le p < \infty$, which are not power bounded, and provide examples of uniformly Kreiss bounded operators which are not absolutely Cesàro bounded. These results complement very limited number of known examples (see \cite{Shi} and \cite{AS}). In \ci…
We solve the problem of best approximation by partial isometries of given rank to an arbitrary rectangular matrix, when the distance is measured in any unitarily invariant norm. In the case where the norm is strictly convex, we parametrize all the solutions. In particular, this allow us to give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for uniqueness. We then apply these results to solve the global problem of approximation by partial isometries, and to extend the notion of symmetric approximation of frames introduced in M. Frank, V. Paulsen, T. Tiballi, Symmetric Approximation of frames and …
This paper studies three natural pre-orders of increasing generality on the set of all completely non-unitary partial isometries with equal defect indices. We show that the problem of determining when one partial isometry is less than another with respect to these pre-orders is equivalent to the existence of a bounded (or isometric) multiplier between two natural reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions. For large classes of partial isometries these spaces can be realized as the well-known model subspaces and deBranges-Rovnyak spaces. This characterization is applied to investig…
A pair of Hilbert space linear operators $(V_1,V_2)$ is said to be $q$-commutative, for a unimodular complex number $q$, if $V_1V_2=qV_2V_1$. A concrete functional model for $q$-commutative pairs of isometries is obtained. The functional model is parametrized by a collection of Hilbert spaces and operators acting on them. As a consequence, the collection serves as a complete unitary invariance for $q$-commutative pairs of isometries. A $q$-commutative operator pair $(V_1,V_2)$ is said to be doubly $q$-commutative, if in addition, it satisfies $V_2V_1^*=qV_1^*V_2$. Doubly $q$-commutative pairs …
We study self-adjoint semigroups of partial isometries on a Hilbert space. These semigroups coincide precisely with faithful representations of abstract inverse semigroups. Groups of unitary operators are specialized examples of self-adjoint semigroups of partial isometries. We obtain a general structure result showing that every self-adjoint semigroup of partial isometries consists of "generalized weighted composition" operators on a space of square-integrable Hilbert-space valued functions. If the semigroup is irreducible and contains a compact operator then the underlying measure space is p…
Let $H$ be a Hilbert space and $(Ω,\mathcal{F},μ)$ a probability space. A Hilbert point in $L^p(Ω; H)$ is a nontrivial function $φ$ such that $\|φ\|_p \leq \|φ+f\|_p$ whenever $\langle f, φ\rangle = 0$. We demonstrate that $φ$ is a Hilbert point in $L^p(Ω; H)$ for some $p\neq2$ if and only if $\|φ(ω)\|_H$ assumes only the two values $0$ and $C>0$. We also obtain a geometric description of when a sum of independent Rademacher variables is a Hilbert point.
Let $(S_1, S_2)$ be a bi-isometry, that is, a pair of commuting isometries $S_1$ and $S_2$ on a complex Hilbert space $\mathscr H.$ By the von Neumann-Wold decomposition, the hyper-range $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1):=\cap_{n=0}^\infty S^n_1\mathscr H$ of $S_1$ reduces $S_1$ to a unitary operator. Although $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ is an invariant subspace for $S_2,$ in general, $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ is not a reducing subspace for $S_2.$ We show that $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ reduces $S_2$ to an isometry if and only if the subspaces $S_2(\ker S^*_1)$ and $\mathscr H_\infty(S_1)$ of $\mathscr H$ are…
An operator $T \in B(\h)$ is complex symmetric if there exists a conjugate-linear, isometric involution $C:\h\to\h$ so that $T = CT^*C$. We provide a concrete description of all complex symmetric partial isometries. In particular, we prove that any partial isometry on a Hilbert space of dimension $\leq 4$ is complex symmetric.
We study the behavior of some classes of Hilbert space contractions with respect to Harnack and Shmul'yan pre-orders and the corresponding equivalence relations. We give some conditions under which the Harnack equivalence of two given contractions is equivalent to their Shmul'yan equivalence and to the existence of an arc joining the two contractions in the class of operator-valued contractive analytic functions on the unit disc. We apply some of these results to quasi-isometries and quasi-normal contractions, as well as to partial isometries for which we show that their Harnack and Shmul'yan …
An operator T on Hilbert space is a 3-isometry if there exists operators B and D such that (T*)^n T^n = I+nB +n^2 D. An operator J is a Jordan operator if it the sum of a unitary U and nilpotent N of order two which commute. If T is a 3-isometry and c>0, then I-c^{-2} D + sB + s^2D is positive semidefinite for all real s if and only if T is the restriction to an invariant subspace of a Jordan operator J=U+N with the norm of N at most c. As a corollary, an analogous result for 3-symmetric operators, due to Helton and Agler, is recovered.
A known general program, designed to endow the quotient space ${\cal U}_{\cal A} / {\cal U}_{\cal B}$ of the unitary groups ${\cal U}_{\cal A}$, ${\cal U}_{\cal B}$ of the C$^*$ algebras ${\cal B}\subset{\cal A}$ with an invariant Finsler metric, is applied to obtain a metric for the space ${\cal I}({\cal H})$ of partial isometries of a Hilbert space ${\cal H}$. ${\cal I}({\cal H})$ is a quotient of the unitary group of ${\cal B}({\cal H})\times{\cal B}({\cal H})$, where ${\cal B}({\cal H})$ is the algebra of bounded linear operators in ${\cal H}$. Under this program, the solution of a linear …
Given a separable Banach space $E$, we construct an extremely non-complex Banach space (i.e. a space satisfying that $\|Id + T^2\|=1+\|T^2\|$ for every bounded linear operator $T$ on it) whose dual contains $E^*$ as an $L$-summand. We also study surjective isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces and construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries reduces to $\pm Id$, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains the group of isometries of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space as a subgroup.
We extend some of the results of Agler, Knese, and McCarthy [1] to $n$-tuples of commuting isometries for $n>2$. Let $\mathbb{V}=(V_1,\dots,V_n)$ be an $n$-tuple of a commuting isometries on a Hilbert space and let Ann$(\mathbb{V})$ denote the set of all $n$-variable polynomials $p$ such that $p(\mathbb{V})=0$. When Ann$(\mathbb{V})$ defines an affine algebraic variety of dimension 1 and $\mathbb{V}$ is completely non-unitary, we show that $\mathbb{V}$ decomposes as a direct sum of $n$-tuples $\mathbb{W}=(W_1,\dots,W_n)$ with the property that, for each $i=1,\dots,n$, $W_i$ is either a shift o…
Let $\mathbb{H}$ be a separable Hilbert space. In this paper we establish a generalization of Walnut's representation and Janssen's representation of the $\mathbb{H}-$valued Gabor frame operator on $\mathbb{H}-$valued weighted amalgam spaces $W_{\mathbb{H}}(L^p,L^q_v)$, $1 \leq p, q \leq \infty$. Also we show that the frame operator is invertible on $W_{\mathbb{H}}(L^p,L^q_v)$, $1 \leq p, q \leq \infty$, if the window function is in the Wiener amalgam space $W_{\mathbb{H}}(L^{\infty},L^1_w)$. Further, we obtain the Walnut representation and invertibility of the frame operator corresponding to …
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be an atomless semifinite von Neumann algebra (or an atomic von Neumann algebra with all atoms having the same trace) acting on a (not necessarily separable) Hilbert space $H$ equipped with a semifinite faithful normal trace $τ$. Let $E(\mathcal{M},τ) $ be a symmetric operator space affiliated with $ \mathcal{M} $, whose norm is order continuous and is not proportional to the Hilbertian norm $\left\|\cdot\right\|_2$ on $L_2(\mathcal{M},τ)$. We obtain general description of all bounded hermitian operators on $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$. This is the first time that the description of he…
