Let $M$ be a transitive model of $ZFC$ and let ${\bf B}$ be a $M$-complete Boolean algebra in $M.$ (In general a proper class.) We define a generalized notion of forcing with such Boolean algebras, $^*$forcing. (A $^*$ forcing extension of $M$ is a transitive set of the form $M[{\bf G}]$ where ${\bf G}$ is an $M$-complete ultrafilter on ${\bf B}.$) We prove that
1. If ${\bf G}$ is a $^*$forcing complete ultrafilter on ${\bf B},$ then $M[{\bf G}]\models ZFC.$
2. Let $H\sub M.$ If there is a least transitive model $N$ such that $H\in M,$ $Ord^M=Ord^N,$ and $N\models ZFC,$ then we denote $N$ by $M[H].$ We show that all models of $ZFC$ of the form $M[H]$ are $^*$forcing extensions of $M.$
As an immediate corollary we get that $L[0^{\#}]$ is a $^*$forcing extension of $L.$
Let V be the universe of sets and V_α the sets of rank \leqα. We develop some axiom schemata for set theory based on the following three assumptions: 1. V \models ZFC 2. V is large with respect to the class of ordinals 3. V is large with respect to each of the V_α
This paper is a sequel to \cite{Tz10}, where a local version of ZFC, LZFC, was introduced and examined and transitive models of ZFC with properties that resemble large cardinal properties, namely Mahlo and $Π_1^1$-indescribable models, were considered. By analogy we refer to such models as "large models", and the properties in question as "large model properties". Continuing here in the same spirit we consider further large model properties, that resemble stronger large cardinals, namely, "elementarily embeddable", "extendible" and "strongly extendible", "critical" and "strongly critical", "se…
We investigate systems of transitive models of ZFC which are elementarily embeddable into each other and the influence of definability properties on such systems.
A set is nontypical in the Russell sense, if it belongs to a countable ordinal definable set. The class HNT of all hereditarily nontypical sets satisfies all axioms of ZF and the double inclusion HOD $\subseteq$ HNT $\subseteq$ V holds. Solving a problem recently proposed by Tzouvaras, a generic extension L$[a,x]$ of L, by two reals $a,x$, is presented in which L=HOD $\subsetneqq$ L$[a]$=HNT $\subsetneqq$ V=L$[a,x]$, so that HNT is a model of ZFC strictly between HOD and the universe.
Laver, and Woodin independently, showed that models of ${\rm ZFC}$ are uniformly definable in their set-forcing extensions, using a ground model parameter. We investigate ground model definability for models of fragments of ${\rm ZFC}$, particularly of ${\rm ZF}+{\rm DC}_δ$ and of ${\rm ZFC}^-$, and we obtain both positive and negative results. Generalizing the results of Laver and Woodin, we show that models of ${\rm ZF}+{\rm DC}_δ$ are uniformly definable in their set-forcing extensions by posets admitting a gap at $δ$, using a ground model parameter. In particular, this means that models of…
We show that if $M$ is a countable transitive model of ZF and if $a,b$ are reals not in $M$, then there is a $G$ generic over $M$ such that $b \in L[a,G]$. We then present several applications such as the following: if $J$ is any countable transitive model of ZFC and $M \not\subseteq J$ is another countable transitive model of ZFC of the same ordinal height $α$, then there is a forcing extension $N$ of $J$ such that $M \cup N$ is not included in any transitive model of ZFC of height $α$. Also, assuming $0^\#$ exists, letting $S$ be the set of reals generic over $L$, although $S$ is disjoint fr…
We examine what happens if we replace ZFC with a localistic/relativistic system, LZFC, whose central new axiom, denoted by $Loc({\rm ZFC})$, says that every set belongs to a transitive model of ZFC. LZFC consists of $Loc({\rm ZFC})$ plus some elementary axioms forming Basic Set Theory (BST). Some theoretical reasons for this shift of view are given. All $Π_2$ consequences of ZFC are provable in ${\rm LZFC}$. LZFC strongly extends Kripke-Platek (KP) set theory minus $Δ_0$-Collection and minus $\in$-induction scheme. ZFC+``there is an inaccessible cardinal'' proves the consistency of LZFC. In LZ…
In light of the celebrated theorem of Vopěnka (1972), proving in ZFC that every set is generic over HOD, it is natural to inquire whether the set-theoretic universe $V$ must be a class-forcing extension of HOD by some possibly proper-class forcing notion in HOD. We show, negatively, that if ZFC is consistent, then there is a model of ZFC that is not a class-forcing extension of its HOD for any class forcing notion definable in HOD and with definable forcing relations there (allowing parameters). Meanwhile, S. Friedman (2012) showed, positively, that if one augments HOD with a certain ZFC-amena…
We consider the modality "$φ$ is true in every $σ$-centered forcing extension", denoted $\squareφ$, and its dual "$φ$ is true in some $σ$-centered forcing extension", denoted $\lozengeφ$ (where $φ$ is a statement in set theory), which give rise to the notion of a "principle of $σ$-centered forcing". We prove that if ZFC is consistent, then the modal logic of $σ$-centered forcing, i.e. the ZFC-provable principles of $σ$-centered forcing, is exactly $\mathsf{S4.2}$. We also generalize this result to other related classes of forcing.
We give characterizations for the (in ZFC unprovable) sentences ``Every $\Sb{1}{2}$--set is measurable" and ``Every $\Db{1}{2}$--set is measurable" for various notions of measurability derived from well--known forcing partial orderings.
The modal logic of forcing arises when one considers a model of set theory in the context of all its forcing extensions, interpreting necessity as "in all forcing extensions" and possibility as "in some forcing extension". In this modal language one may easily express sweeping general forcing principles, such as the assertion that every possibly necessary statement is necessarily possible, which is valid for forcing, or the assertion that every possibly necessary statement is true, which is the maximality principle, a forcing axiom independent of but equiconsistent with ZFC (Stavi-Väänänen, Ha…
Typically, set theorists reason about forcing constructions in the context of ZFC. We show that without AC, several simple properties of forcing posets fail to hold, one of which answers Miller's question from arXiv:0704.3998.
In this article we present a technique for selecting models of set theory that are complete in a model-theoretic sense. Specifically, we will apply Robinson infinite forcing to the collections of models of ZFC obtained by Cohen forcing. This technique will be used to suggest a unified perspective on generic absoluteness principles.
A ground of the universe V is a transitive proper class W subset V, such that W is a model of ZFC and V is obtained by set forcing over W, so that V = W[G] for some W-generic filter G subset P in W . The model V satisfies the ground axiom GA if there are no such W properly contained in V . The model W is a bedrock of V if W is a ground of V and satisfies the ground axiom. The mantle of V is the intersection of all grounds of V . The generic mantle of V is the intersection of all grounds of all set-forcing extensions of V . The generic HOD, written gHOD, is the intersection of all HODs of all s…
We formalize the theory of forcing in the set theory framework of Isabelle/ZF. Under the assumption of the existence of a countable transitive model of ZFC, we construct a proper generic extension and show that the latter also satisfies ZFC. In doing so, we remodularized Paulson's ZF-Constructibility library.
Starting from large cardinals we construct a pair $V_1\subseteq V_2$ of models of $ZFC$ with the same cardinals and cofinalities such that $GCH$ holds in $V_1$ and fails everywhere in $V_2$.
A transitive model $M$ of ZFC is called a ground if the universe $V$ is a set forcing extension of $M$. We show that the grounds of $V$ are downward set-directed. Consequently, we establish some fundamental theorems on the forcing method and the set-theoretic geology. For instance, (1) the mantle, the intersection of all grounds, must be a model of ZFC. (2) $V$ has only set many grounds if and only if the mantle is a ground. We also show that if the universe has some very large cardinal, then the mantle must be a ground.
We introduce the notion of effective Axiom A and use it to show that some popular tree forcings are Suslin+. We introduce transitive nep and present a simplified version of Shelah's "preserving a little implies preserving much": If I is a Suslin ccc ideal (e.g. Lebesgue-null or meager) and P is a transitive nep forcing (e.g. P is Suslin+) and P doesn't make any I-positive Borel set small, then P doesn't make any I-positive set small.
In this article we introduce and study hyperclass-forcing (where the conditions of the forcing notion are themselves classes) in the context of an extension of Morse-Kelley class theory, called MK$^{**}$. We define this forcing by using a symmetry between MK$^{**}$ models and models of ZFC$^-$ plus there exists a strongly inaccessible cardinal (called SetMK$^{**}$). We develop a coding between $β$-models $\mathcal{M}$ of MK$^{**}$ and transitive models $M^+$ of SetMK$^{**}$ which will allow us to go from $\mathcal{M}$ to $M^+$ and vice versa. So instead of forcing with a hyperclass in MK$^{**}…
Suppose that there's no transitive model of ZFC + there's a strong cardinal, and let K denote the core model. It is shown that if δhas the tree property then δ^{+K} = δ^+ and δis weakly compact in K.
We introduce a simplified framework for ord-transitive models and Shelah's non elementary proper (nep) theory. We also introduce a new construction for the countable support nep iteration.
In this paper we show how to build a model of $ZFC$ such that all its inner models satisfying the Axiom of Choice are well-ordered with respect to inclusion, and that said ordering is of arbitrary height (including possibly $Ord$ high). We do this by iterating $κ$-Sacks forcing for ever-increasing $κ$, while showing that such forcings do not add any unexpected intermediate inner models.
We extend a transitive model V of ZFC + GCH cardinal preservingly to a model N of ZF + "GCH holds below Alef_omega" + "there is a surjection from the power set of Alef_omega onto lambda" where lambda is an arbitrarily high fixed cardinal in V.
Assume ZFC. Let $κ$ be a cardinal. A ${<κ}$-ground is a transitive proper class $W$ modelling ZFC and such that $V$ is a generic extension of $W$ via a forcing $\mathbb{P}\in W$ of cardinality ${<κ}$. The $κ$-mantle is the intersection of all ${<κ}$-grounds. We prove that certain partial choice principles in the $κ$-mantle are the consequence of $κ$ being inaccessible/weakly compact, and some other related facts.
We show that the set of codes for Ramsey positive analytic sets is $\mathbfΣ^1_2$-complete. This is a one projective-step higher analogue of the Hurewicz theorem saying that the set of codes for uncountable analytic sets is $\mathbfΣ^1_1$-complete. This shows a close resemblance between the Sacks forcing and the Mathias forcing. In particular, we get that the $σ$-ideal of Ramsey null sets is not ZFC-correct. This solves a problem posed by Ikegami, Pawlikowski and Zapletal.
A new axiom is proposed, the Ground Axiom, asserting that the universe is not a nontrivial set-forcing extension of any inner model. The Ground Axiom is first-order expressible, and any model of ZFC has a class-forcing extension which satisfies it. The Ground Axiom is independent of many well-known set-theoretic assertions including the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis, the assertion V=HOD that every set is ordinal definable, and the existence of measurable and supercompact cardinals. The related Bedrock Axiom, asserting that the universe is a set-forcing extension of a model satisfying the Gr…
We answer a question of Moore by building a forcing extension satisfying measuring together with CH. The construction works over any model of ZFC and can be described as a forcing iteration with countable structures as side conditions and with symmetry constraints. Also, we show that a small variation of this construction produces a model of measuring together with the continuum being larger than the second uncountable cardinal.
The Maximality Principle MP is a scheme which states that if a sentence of the language of ZFC is true in some forcing extension V^P, and remains true in any further forcing extension of V^P, then it is true in all forcing extensions of V. A modified maximality principle MP_Gamma arises when considering forcing with a particular class Gamma of forcing notions. A parametrized form of such a principle, MP_Gamma(X), considers formulas taking parameters; to avoid inconsistency such parameters must be restricted to a specific set X which depends on the forcing class Gamma being considered. A strong…
A new axiom is proposed, the Ground Axiom, asserting that the universe is not a nontrivial set forcing extension of any inner model. The Ground Axiom is first-order expressible, and any model of ZFC has a class forcing extension which satisfies it. The Ground Axiom is independent of many well-known set-theoretic assertions including the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis, the assertion V=HOD that every set is ordinal definable, and the existence of measurable and supercompact cardinals. The related Bedrock Axiom, asserting that the universe is a set forcing extension of a model satisfying the Gr…
We define a certain finite set in set theory $\{x\midφ(x)\}$ and prove that it exhibits a universal extension property: it can be any desired particular finite set in the right set-theoretic universe and it can become successively any desired larger finite set in top-extensions of that universe. Specifically, ZFC proves the set is finite; the definition $φ$ has complexity $Σ_2$, so that any affirmative instance of it $φ(x)$ is verified in any sufficiently large rank-initial segment of the universe $V_θ$; the set is empty in any transitive model and others; and if $φ$ defines the set $y$ in som…
In this paper, we address the question of when a non-free $\aleph_1$-free group $H$ can be be free in a transitive cardinality-preserving model extension. Using the $Γ$-invariant, denoted $Γ(H)$, we present a necessary and sufficient condition resolving this question for $\aleph_1$-free groups of cardinality $\aleph_1$. Specifically, if $Γ(H) = [\aleph_1]$, then $H$ will be free in a transitive model extension if and only if $\aleph_1$ collapses, while for $Γ(H) \ne [\aleph_1]$ there exist cardinality-preserving forcings that will add a basis to $H$. In particular, for $Γ(H) \neq [\aleph_1]$, …
We show in this note that in the forcing extension by $Add(ω,\beth_ω)$, the following Ramsey property holds: for any $r\in ω$ and any $f: \mathbb{R}\to r$, there exists an infinite $X\subset \mathbb{R}$ such that $X+X$ is monochromatic under $f$. We also show the Ramsey statement above is true in $\mathrm{ZFC}$ when $r=2$. This answers two questions by Komjáth, Leader, Russell, Shelah, Soukup and Vidnyánszky.
In this paper, following an idea of Christophe Chalons, I propose a new kind of forcing axiom, the Maximality Principle, which asserts that any sentence phi holding in some forcing extension V^P and all subsequent extensions V^P*Q holds already in V. It follows, in fact, that such sentences must also hold in all forcing extensions of V. In modal terms, therefore, the Maximality Principle is expressed by the scheme (diamond box phi) implies (box phi), and is equivalent to the modal theory S5. In this article, I prove that the Maximality Principle is relatively consistent with ZFC. A boldface ve…
We prove that if $\bI$ is a p.\ o. set in a countable transitive model $\gM$ of $\ZFC$ then $\gM$ can be extended by a generic sequence of reals $\a_ı,$ $ı\in\bI,$ such that $\aleph_1^\gM$ is preserved and every $\a_ı$ is Sacks generic over $\gM[\ang{\a_\j:\j<ı}]$. The structure of the degrees of \dd\gM constructibility of reals in the extension is investigated. As an application, we obtain a model in which the $\is12$ equivalence relation $x \E y$ iff $\rL[x]=\rL[y]$ ($x,\,y$ are reals) does not admit a reasonable form of the Glimm -- Effros theorem.
Boolean-valued models of set theory were independently introduced by Scott, Solovay and Vopěnka in 1965, offering a natural and rich alternative for describing forcing. The original method was adapted by Takeuti, Titani, Kozawa and Ozawa to lattice-valued models of set theory. After this, Löwe and Tarafder proposed a class of algebras based on a certain kind of implication which satisfy several axioms of ZF. From this class, they found a specific 3-valued model called PS3 which satisfies all the axioms of ZF, and can be expanded with a paraconsistent negation *, thus obtaining a paraconsistent…
I prove several theorems concerning upward closure and amalgamation in the generic multiverse of a countable transitive model of set theory. Every such model $W$ has forcing extensions $W[c]$ and $W[d]$ by adding a Cohen real, which cannot be amalgamated in any further extension, but some nontrivial forcing notions have all their extensions amalgamable. An increasing chain $W[G_0]\subseteq W[G_1]\subseteq\cdots$ has an upper bound $W[H]$ if and only if the forcing had uniformly bounded essential size in $W$. Every chain $W\subseteq W[c_0]\subseteq W[c_1]\subseteq\cdots$ of extensions adding Co…
We compare the forcing related properties of a complete Boolean algebra B with the properties of the convergences $λ_s$ (the algebraic convergence) and $λ_{ls}$ on B generalizing the convergence on the Cantor and Aleksandrov cube respectively. In particular we show that $λ_{ls}$ is a topological convergence iff forcing by B does not produce new reals and that $λ_{ls}$ is weakly topological if B satisfies condition $(\hbar)$ (implied by the ${\mathfrak t}$-cc). On the other hand, if $λ_{ls}$ is a weakly topological convergence, then B is a $2^{\mathfrak h}$-cc algebra or in some generic extensi…
