This note deals with the following problem, the case $p=1$, $q=2$ of which was introduced to us by Vitali Milman: What is the volume left in the $L_p^n$ ball after removing a t-multiple of the $L_q^n$ ball? Recall that the $L_r^n$ ball is the set $\{(t_1,t_2,\dots,t_n);\ t_i\in{\bf R},\ n^{-1}\sum_{i=1}^n|t_i|^r\le 1\}$ and note that for $0<p<q<\infty$ the $L_q^n$ ball is contained in the $L_p^n$ ball.
In Corollary 4 we show that, after normalizing Lebesgue measure so that the volume of the $L_p^n$ ball is one, the answer to the problem above is of order $e^{-ct^pn^{p/q}}$ for $T<t<{1\over 2}n^ {{1\over p}-{1\over q}}$, where $c$ and $T$ depend on $p$ and $q$ but not on $n$.
The main theorem, Theorem 3, deals with the corresponding question for the surface measure of the $L_p^n$ sphere.
We show that in complete metric spaces, $4$-hyperconvexity is equivalent to finite hyperconvexity. Moreover, every complete, almost $n$-hyperconvex metric space is $n$-hyperconvex. This generalizes among others results of Lindenstrauss and answers questions of Aronszajn-Panitchpakdi. Furthermore, we prove local-to-global results for externally and weakly externally hyperconvex subsets of hyperconvex metric spaces and find sufficient conditions in order for those classes of subsets to be convex with respect to a geodesic bicombing.
Order estimates for the Kolmogorov widths of an intersection of two finite-dimensional balls in a mixed norm under some conditions on the parameters are obtained.
We study the volume of the intersection of two unit balls from one of the classical matrix ensembles GOE, GUE and GSE, as the dimension tends to infinity. This can be regarded as a matrix analogue of a result of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger for classical $\ell_p$-balls [Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger, GAFA Lecture Notes, 1991]. The proof of our result is based on two ingredients, which are of independent interest. The first one is a weak law of large numbers for a point chosen uniformly at random in the unit ball of such a matrix ensemble. The second one is an explicit computation of the…
In this paper we obtain order estimates for the Kolmogorov widths of the set $B_{p_0}^m\cap νB_{p_1}^m$ in $l_q^m$; here $0\le n\le m/2$, $p_0>p_1$, $q<\infty$.
We study the precise asymptotic volume of balls in Orlicz spaces and show that the volume of the intersection of two Orlicz balls undergoes a phase transition when the dimension of the ambient space tends to infinity. This generalizes a result of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger [GAFA, Lecture notes in Math. 1469 (1991), 174--178] for $\ell_p^d$-balls. As another application, we determine the precise asymptotic volume ratio for $2$-concave Orlicz spaces $\ell_M^d$. Our method rests on ideas from statistical mechanics and large deviations theory, more precisely the maximum entropy or Gibbs prin…
Busemann's intersection inequality gives an upper bound for the volume of the intersection body of a star body in terms of the volume of the body itself. Koldobsky, Paouris, and Zymonopoulou asked if there is a similar result for $k$-intersection bodies. We solve this problem for star bodies that are close to the Euclidean ball in the Banach-Mazur distance. We also improve a bound obtained by Koldobsky, Paouris, and Zymonopoulou for general star bodies in the case when $k$ is proportional to the dimension.
We establish Central Limit Theorems for the volumes of intersections of $B_{p}^n$ (the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$) with uniform random subspaces of codimension $d$ for fixed $d$ and $n\to \infty$. As a corollary we obtain higher order approximations for expected volumes, refining previous results by Koldobsky and Lifschitz and approximations obtained from the Eldan--Klartag version of CLT for convex bodies. We also obtain a Central Limit Theorem for the Minkowski functional of the intersection body of $B_p^n$, evaluated on a random vector distributed uniformly on the unit sphere.
The unit ball $B_p^n(\mathbb{R})$ of the finite-dimensional Schatten trace class $\mathcal S_p^n$ consists of all real $n\times n$ matrices $A$ whose singular values $s_1(A),\ldots,s_n(A)$ satisfy $s_1^p(A)+\ldots+s_n^p(A)\leq 1$, where $p>0$. Saint Raymond [Studia Math.\ 80, 63--75, 1984] showed that the limit $$ \lim_{n\to\infty} n^{1/2 + 1/p} \big(\text{Vol}\, B_p^n(\mathbb{R})\big)^{1/n^2} $$ exists in $(0,\infty)$ and provided both lower and upper bounds. In this paper we determine the precise limiting constant based on ideas from the theory of logarithmic potentials with external fields.…
The volume of the unit ball of the Lebesgue sequence space $\ell_p^m$ is very well known since the times of Dirichlet. We calculate the volume of the unit ball in the mixed norm $\ell^n_q(\ell_p^m)$, whose special cases are nowadays popular in machine learning under the name of group lasso. We consider the real as well as the complex case. The result is given by a closed formula involving the gamma function, only slightly more complicated than the one of Dirichlet. We close by an overview of open problems.
We prove asymptotic estimates for the volume of families of Orlicz balls in high dimensions. As an application, we describe a large family of Orlicz balls which verify a famous conjecture of Kannan, Lov{á}sz and Simonovits about spectral gaps. We also study the asymptotic independence of coordinates on uniform random vectors on Orlicz balls, as well as integrability properties of their linear functionals.
A direct approach to Ball's simplex inequality is presented. This approach, which does not use the Brascamp-Lieb inequality, also gives Barthe's characterization of the simplex for Ball's inequality and extends it from discrete to arbitrary measures. It also yields the dual inequality, along with equality conditions, and it does both for arbitrary measures.
It is proved that for a symmetric convex body K in R^n, if for some tau > 0, |K cap (x+tau K)| depends on ||x||_K only, then K is an ellipsoid. As a part of the proof, smoothness properties of convolution bodies ls are studied.
We consider functionals given by the sum of the perimeter and the double integral of some kernel $g:\mathbb R^N\times\mathbb R^N\to \mathbb R^+$, multiplied by a "mass parameter" $\varepsilon$. We show that, whenever $g$ is admissible, radial and decreasing, the unique minimizer of this functional among sets of given volume is the ball as soon as $\varepsilon\ll 1$.
We study isomorphic properties of two generalizations of intersection bodies, the class of k-intersection bodies and the class of generalized k-intersection bodies. We also show that the Banach-Mazur distance of the k-intersection body of a convex body, when it exists and it is convex, with the Euclidean ball, is bounded by a constant depending only on k, generalizing a well-known result of Hensley and Borell. We conclude by giving some volumetric estimates for k-intersection bodies.
A formula due to Sudakov relates the first intrinsic volume of a convex set in a Hilbert space to the maximum of the isonormal Gaussian process over this set. Using this formula we compute the first intrinsic volumes of infinite-dimensional convex compact sets including unit balls with respect to Sobolev-type seminorms and ellipsoids in the Hilbert space. We relate the distribution of the random one-dimensional projections of these sets to the distributions $S_1,S_2,C_1,C_2$ studied by Biane, Pitman, Yor [Bull.\ AMS 38 (2001)]. We show that the $k$-th intrinsic volume of the set of all functio…
The Euclidean concentration inequality states that, among sets with fixed volume, balls have $r$-neighborhoods of minimal volume for every $r>0$. On an arbitrary set, the deviation of this volume growth from that of a ball is shown to control the square of the volume of the symmetric difference between the set and a ball. This sharp result is strictly related to the physically significant problem of understanding near maximizers in the Riesz rearrangement inequality with a strictly decreasing radially decreasing kernel. Moreover, it implies as a particular case the sharp quantitative Euclidean…
The Gaussian Correlation Conjecture states that for any two symmetric, convex sets in n-dimensional space and for any centered, Gaussian measure on that space, the measure of the intersection is greater than or equal to the product of the measures. In this paper we obtain several results which substantiate this conjecture. For example, in the standard Gaussian case, we show there is a positive constant, c, such that the conjecture is true if the two sets are in the Euclidean ball of radius $c\sqrt{n}$. Further we show that if for every n the conjecture is true when the sets are in the Euclidea…
Busemann's theorem states that the intersection body of an origin-symmetric convex body is also convex. In this paper we provide a version of Busemann's theorem for p-convex bodies. We show that the intersection body of a p-convex body is q-convex for certain q. Furthermore, we discuss the sharpness of the previous result by constructing an appropriate example. This example is also used to show that IK, the intersection body of K, can be much farther away from the Euclidean ball than K. Finally, we extend these theorems to some general measure spaces with log-concave and $s$-concave measures
We show that the two-dimensional minimum-volume central section of the $n$-dimensional cross-polytope is attained by the regular $2n$-gon. We establish stability-type results for hyperplane sections of $\ell_p$-balls in all the cases where the extremisers are known. Our methods are mainly probabilistic, exploring connections between negative moments of projections of random vectors uniformly distributed on convex bodies and volume of their sections.
We show that the Euclidean ball has the smallest volume among sublevel sets of nonnegative forms of bounded Bombieri norm as well as among sublevel sets of sum of squares forms whose Gram matrix has bounded Frobenius or nuclear (or, more generally, p-Schatten) norm. These volume-minimizing properties of the Euclidean ball with respect to its representation (as a sublevel set of a form of fixed even degree) complement its numerous intrinsic geometric properties. We also provide a probabilistic interpretation of the results.
