Motivated by mirror symmetry, we consider the Lagrangian fibration $\R^4\to\R^2$ and Lagrangian maps $f:L\hookrightarrow \R^4\to \R^2$, exhibiting an unstable singularity, and study how the bifurcation locus of gradient lines, the integral curves of $\nabla f_x$, for $x\in B$, where $f_x(y)=f(y)-x\cdot y$, changes when $f$ is slightly perturbed. We consider the cases when $f$ is the germ of a fold, of a cusp and, particularly, of an elliptic umbilic.
A Lagrangian system with singularities is considered. The configuration space is a non-compact manifold that depends on time. A set of periodic solutions has been found.
In this paper we introduce universal asymptotic unfolding normal forms for nonlinear singular systems. Next, we propose an approach to find the parameters of a parametric singular system that they play the role of universal unfolding parameters. These parameters effectively influence the local dynamics of the system. We propose a systematic approach to locate local bifurcations in terms of these parameters. Here, we apply the proposed approach on Hopf-zero singularities whose the first few low degree terms are incompressible. In this direction, we obtain novel orbital and parametric normal for…
An intrinsic essence of sounds in music is the evolution of their qualitative types while in mathematics we interpret each qualitative change by a bifurcation. Hopf bifurcation is an important venue to generate a signal with an arbitrary frequency. Hence, the investigations of musical sounds via bifurcation control theory are long-overdue and natural contributions. In this paper, we address the tone coloring of sounds by dynamical modeling of spectral and temporal envelopes. Multiple number of leading harmonic partials of a note (modulo a hearing sound velocity threshold) are attributed into a…
Motivated by mirror symmetry, we consider a Lagrangian fibration $X\to B$ and Lagrangian maps $f:L\hookrightarrow X\to B$, when $L$ has dimension 2, exhibiting an unstable singularity, and study how their caustic changes, in a neighbourhood of the unstable singularity, when slightly perturbed. The integral curves of $\nabla f_x$, for $x\in B$, where $f_x(y)=f(y)-x\cdot y$, called ``gradient lines'', are then introduced, and a study of them, in order to analyse their bifurcation locus, is carried out.
The connection between discrete and continuous dynamical systems through the unit-time map has shown a significant role in bifurcation theory. Recently, it has also been used in fractal analysis of bifurcations. We study fractal properties of the unit-time map near nilpotent nonmonodromic singularities of planar vector fields using normal forms. We are interested in nilpotent singularities because they are nonhyperbolic, and we know that near nonhyperbolic singularities the box dimension is nontrivial. We study discrete orbits generated by the unit-time map, on the separatrices at the bifurcat…
We provide conditions to guarantee the occurrence of Shilnikov bifurcations in analytic unfoldings of some Hopf-Zero singularities through a beyond all order phenomenon: the exponentially small breakdown of invariant manifolds which coincide at any order of the normal form procedure. The conditions are computable and satisfied by generic singularities and generic unfoldings. The existence of Shilnikov bifurcations in the $\mathcal{C}^r$ case was already argued by Guckenheimer in the $80$'s. About the same time, endowing the space of $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ unfoldings with a convenient topology, p…
We consider the 3-body problem of celestial mechanics in Euclidean, elliptic, and hyperbolic spaces, and study how the Lagrangian (equilateral) relative equilibria bifurcate when the Gaussian curvature varies. We thus prove the existence of new classes of orbits. In particular, we find some families of isosceles triangles, which occur in elliptic space.
Singularities of even smooth functions are studied. A classification of singular points which appear in typical parametric families of even functions with at most five parameters is given. Bifurcations of singular points near a caustic value of the parameter are also studied. A determinant for singularity types and conditions for versal deformations are given in terms of partial derivatives (not requiring a preliminary reduction to a canonical form).
In this paper, we explore the dynamics of a Hamiltonian system after a double van der Waals potential energy surface degenerates into a single well. The energy of the system is increased from the bottom of the potential well up to the dissociation energy, which occurs when the system becomes open. In particular, we study the bifurcations of the basic families of periodic orbits of this system as the energy increases using Lagrangian descriptors and Poincaré maps. We investigate the capability of Lagrangian descriptors to find periodic orbits of bifurcating families for the case of resonant, sa…
In this paper we study the existence of heteroclinic cycles in generic unfoldings of nilpotent singularities. Namely we prove that any nilpotent singularity of codimension four in $\mathbb{R}^4$ unfolds generically a bifurcation hypersurface of bifocal homoclinic orbits, that is, homoclinic orbits to equilibrium points with two pairs of complex eigenvalues. We also prove that any nilpotent singularity of codimension three in $\mathbb{R}^3$ unfolds generically a bifurcation curve of heteroclinic cycles between two saddle-focus equilibrium points with different stability indexes. Under generic a…
We are concerned with bifurcation analysis and control of nonlinear Eulerian flows with non-resonant n-tuple Hopf singularity. The analysis is involved with CW complex bifurcations of flow-invariant Clifford hypertori, where we refer to these toral manifolds by toral CW complexes. We observe from primary to tertiary flow-invariant toral CW complex bifurcations for one-parametric systems associated with two most generic cases. In a particular case, a tertiary toral CW complex bifurcates from and resides outside a secondary toral CW complex. When the parameter varies, the secondary internal tora…
We consider here the analytic classification of pairs $(ω,f)$ where $ω$ is a germ of a 2-form on the plane and $f$ is a quasihomogeneous function germ with isolated singularities. We consider only the case where $ω$ is singular, i.e. it vanishes non-degenerately along a smooth line $H(ω)$ (Martinet case) and the function $f$ is such that the pair $(f,H(ω))$ defines an isolated boundary singularity. In analogy with the ordinary case (for symplectic forms on the plane) we show that the moduli in the classification problem are analytic functions of 1-variable and that their number is exactly equa…
Given, in the Lagrangian torus fibration $R^4\to R^2$, a Lagrangian submanifold $L$, endowed with a trivial flat connection, the corresponding mirror object is constructed on the dual fibration by means of a family of Morse homologies associated to the generating function of $L$, and it is provided with a holomorphic structure. Morse homology, however, is not defined along the caustic $C$ of $L$ or along the bifurcation locus $B$, where the family does not satisfy the Morse-Smale condition. The holomorphic structure is extended to the subset $C\cup B$, except cusps, yielding the so called quan…
This paper develops a symplectic bifurcation theory for integrable systems in dimension four. We prove that if an integrable system has no hyperbolic singularities and its bifurcation diagram has no vertical tangencies, then the fibers of the induced singular Lagrangian fibration are connected. The image of this singular Lagrangian fibration is, up to smooth deformations, a planar region bounded by the graphs of two continuous functions. The bifurcation diagram consists of the boundary points in this image plus a countable collection of rank zero singularities, which are contained in the inter…
We use blowup to study the regularization of codimension one two-fold singularities in planar piecewise smooth (PWS) dynamical systems. We focus on singular canards, pseudo-equlibria and limit cycles that can occur in the PWS system. Using the regularization of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, we show rigorously how singular canards can persist and how the bifurcation of pseudo-equilibria is related to bifurcations of equilibria in the regularized system. We also show that PWS limit cycles are connected to Hopf bifurcations of the regularization. In addition, we show how regularizati…
The local zero structure of a smooth map may qualitatively change, when the map is subjected to small perturbations. The changes may include births and/or deaths of zeros. The qualitative properties are defined as the invariances of an appropriate equivalence relation. The occurrence of a qualitative change in the zero structures is called a bifurcation and the map is named a singularity. The local bifurcation analysis of singularities has been extensively studied in singularity theory and many powerful algebraic tools have been developed for their study. However, there does not exist any symb…
This article gives a classification, up to symplectic equivalence, of singular Lagrangian foliations given by a completely integrable system of a 4-dimensional symplectic manifold, in a full neighbourhood of a singular leaf of focus-focus (=nodal) type.
Linear complementarity problems provide a powerful framework to model nonsmooth phenomena in a variety of real-world applications. In dynamical control systems, they appear coupled to a linear input-output system in the form of linear complementarity systems. Mimicking the program that led to the foundation of bifurcation theory in smooth maps, we introduce a novel notion of equivalence between linear complementarity problems that sets the basis for a theory of bifurcations in a large class of nonsmooth maps, including, but not restricted to, steadystate bifurcations in linear complementarity …
We provide a complete symmetry-breaking bifurcation control for equivariant smooth differential systems with Bogdanov-Takens singularities. Controller coefficient space is partitioned by critical controller sets into different connected regions. The connected regions provide a classification for all qualitatively different dynamics of the controlled system. Hence, a state feedback controller design with four small controller coefficients is proposed for an efficient and full singular symmetry-breaking control. Our approach works well for nonlinear control systems with both controllable and unc…
A case study in bifurcation and stability analysis is presented, in which reduced dynamical system modelling yields substantial new global and predictive information about the behaviour of a complex system. The first smooth pathway, free of pathological and persistent degenerate singularities, is surveyed through the parameter space of a nonlinear dynamical model for a gradient-driven, turbulence-shear flow energetics in magnetized fusion plasmas. Along the route various obstacles and features are identified and treated appropriately. An organizing centre of low codimension is shown to be robu…
Two dynamical models that have been proposed to describe transitions between low and high confinement states (L-H transitions) in confined plasmas are analysed using singularity theory and stability theory. It is shown that the stationary-state bifurcation sets have qualitative properties identical to standard normal forms for the pitchfork and transcritical bifurcations. The analysis yields the codimension of the highest-order singularities, from which we find that the unperturbed systems are overdetermined bifurcation problems and derive appropriate universal unfoldings. Questions of mutual …
