On a compact manifold with boundary, consider the realization B of an elliptic, possibly pseudodifferential, boundary value problem having a spectral cut (a ray free of eigenvalues), say R_-. In the first part of the paper we define and discuss in detail the operator log B; its residue (generalizing the Wodzicki residue) is essentially proportional to the zeta function value at zero, zeta(B,0), and it enters in an important way in studies of composed zeta functions zeta(A,B,s)=Tr(AB^{-s}) (pursued elsewhere).
There is a similar definition of the operator log_theta B, when the spectral cut is at a general angle theta. When B has spectral cuts at two angles theta < phi, one can define the sectorial projection Pi_{theta,phi}(B) whose range contains the generalized eigenspaces for eigenvalues with argument in ] theta, phi [; this is studied in the last part of the paper. The operator Pi_{theta,phi}(B) is shown to be proportional to the difference between log_theta B and log_phi B, having slightly better symbol properties than they have. We show by examples that it belongs to the Boutet de Monvel calculus in many special cases, but lies outside the calculus in general.
Over a closed manifold, we consider the sectorial projection of an elliptic pseudo-differential operator A of positive order with two rays of minimal growth. We show that it depends continuously on A when the space of pseudo-differential operators is equipped with a certain topology which we explicitly describe. Our main application deals with a continuous curve of arbitrary first order linear elliptic differential operators over a compact manifold with boundary. Under the additional assumption of the weak inner unique continuation property, we derive the continuity of a related curve of Calde…
Let $c_{kl} \in W^{1,\infty}(Ω, \mathbb{C})$ for all $k,l \in \{1, \ldots, d\}$ and $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be open with Lipschitz boundary. We consider the divergence form operator $ A_p = - \sum_{k,l=1}^d \partial_l (c_{kl} \, \partial_k) $ in $L_p(Ω)$ when the coefficient matrix satisfies $(C(x) \, ξ, ξ) \in Σ_θ$ for all $x \in Ω$ and $ξ\in \mathbb{C}^d$, where $Σ_θ$ be the sector with vertex 0 and semi-angle $θ$ in the complex plane. We show that a sectorial estimate hold for $A_p$ for all $p$ in a suitable range. We then apply these estimates to prove that the closure of $-A_p$ generates …
For a classical elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of order m>0 on a closed manifold X, such that the eigenvalues of the principal symbol p_m(x,ξ) have arguments in \,]θ,ϕ[\, and \,]ϕ, θ+2π[\, (θ<ϕ<θ+2π), the sectorial projection Π_{θ, ϕ}(P) is defined essentially as the integral of the resolvent along {e^{iϕ}R_+}\cup {e^{iθ}R_+}. In a recent paper, Booss-Bavnbek, Chen, Lesch and Zhu have pointed out that there is a flaw in several published proofs that ¶_{θ, ϕ}(P) is a ψdo of order 0; namely that p_m(x,ξ) cannot in general be modified to allow integration of (p_m(x,ξ)-λ)^{-1} along {e^{iϕ…
The form method as popularised by Lions and Kato is a successful device to associate m-sectorial operators with suitable elliptic or sectorial forms. McIntosh generalised the form method to an accretive setting, thereby allowing to associate m-accretive operators with suitable accretive forms. Classically, the form domain is required to be densely embedded into the Hilbert space. Recently, this requirement was relaxed by Arendt and ter Elst in the setting of elliptic and sectorial forms. Here we study the prospects of a generalised form method for accretive forms to generate accretive operator…
We study operators of the form $$ L=\sum_{|α|,|β|\le n} D^αc_{α,β} D^β, x\in\mathbb R^n $$ provided that the coefficients of the main symbol corresponding to the indices $|α|=|β|=m$ are continuous while the other ones are distributions. Assuming that the main symbol defines the strongly elliptic operator we find sufficient conditions for the coefficients $c_{α,β}(x)$ which guarantee that the operator $L$ is well defined. In particular, if $c_{α,β}(x)$ belong to the spaces of multipliers from $H_2^{m-|α|}$ to $H_2^{|β|-m}$ then $L$ defines a maximal sectorial operator in $L_2(\mathbb R^n)$. We …
In a recent article, Arendt and ter Elst have shown that every sectorial form is in a natural way associated with the generator of an analytic strongly continuous semigroup, even if the form fails to be closable. As an intermediate step they have introduced so-called j-elliptic forms, which generalises the concept of elliptic forms in the sense of Lions. We push their analysis forward in that we discuss some perturbation and convergence results for semigroups associated with j-elliptic forms. In particular, we study convergence with respect to the trace norm or other Schatten norms. We apply o…
We study elliptic and parabolic boundary value problems in spaces of mixed scales with mixed smoothness on the half space. The aim is to solve boundary value problems with boundary data of negative regularity and to describe the singularities of solutions at the boundary. To this end, we derive mapping properties of Poisson operators in mixed scales with mixed smoothness. We also derive $\mathcal{R}$-sectoriality results for homogeneous boundary data in the case that the smoothness in normal direction is not too large.
Let $Ω\subset {\bf R}^d$ be a bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary $Γ$. It will be shown that the Jordan chains of m-sectorial second-order elliptic partial differential operators with measurable coefficients and (local or non-local) Robin boundary conditions in $L_2(Ω)$ can be characterized with the help of Jordan chains of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and the boundary operator from $H^{1/2}(Γ)$ into $H^{-1/2}(Γ)$. This result extends the Birman--Schwinger principle in the framework of elliptic operators for the characterization of eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and geometric eigenspaces to …
We consider here a nonlinear elliptic equation in an unbounded sectorial domain of the plane. We prove the existence of a minimal solution to this equation and study its properties. We infer from this analysis some asymptotics for the stationary solution of an equation arising in plasma physics.
Boundary value problems for nonlocal fractional elliptic equations with parameter in Banach spaces are studied. Uniform $L_p$-separability properties and sharp resolvent estimates are obtained for elliptic equations in terms of fractional derivatives. Particularly, it is proven that the fractional ellipitic operator generated by these equations is sectorial and also is a generator of an analytic semigroup. Moreover, maximal regularity properties of nonlocal fractional abstract parabolic equation are established. As an application, the nonlocal anisotropic fractional differential equations and …
We consider the Dirichlet problem for quasilinear elliptic equations with Musielak-Orlicz (p,q)-growth and non-logarithmic conditions on the coefficients. A sufficient Wiener-type condition for the regularity of a boundary point is established.
In this short paper we prove a global logarithmic stability of the Cauchy problem for H 2-solutions of an anisotropic elliptic equation in a Lip-schitz domain. The result we obtained is based on tools borrowed from the existing technics to establish stability estimate for the Cauchy problem [4] (see also [1]) combined with tools we already used in [6] to study an inverse medium problem.
In this paper, we study vector--valued elliptic operators of the form $\mathcal{L}f:=\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla f)-F\cdot\nabla f+\mathrm{div}(Cf)-Vf$ acting on vector-valued functions $f:\mathbb{R}^d\to\mathbb{R}^m$ and involving coupling at zero and first order terms. We prove that $\mathcal{L}$ admits realizations in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{R}^m)$, for $1<p<\infty$, that generate analytic strongly continuous semigroups provided that $V=(v_{ij})_{1\le i,j\le m}$ is a matrix potential with locally integrable entries satisfying a sectoriality condition, the diffusion matrix $Q$ is symmetric and un…
In the present paper we study the existence of solutions for some classes of singular systems involving the p(x) and q(x) Laplacian operators. The approach is based on bifurcation theory and subsupersolution method for systems of quasilinear equations involving singular terms.
This paper introduces the notion of $log$-regularity (or $log$-irregularity) of the boundary point $ζ$ (possibly $ζ=\infty$) of the arbitrary open subset $Ω$ of the Greenian deleted neigborhood of $ζ$ in $R^2$ concerning second order uniformly elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, according as whether the $log$-harmonic measure of $ζ$ is null (or positive). A necessary and sufficient condition for the removability of the logarithmic singularity, that is to say for the existence of a unique solution to the Dirichlet problem in $Ω$ in a class $O(\log |\cdot - ζ|)$ is estab…
We consider the existence and nonexistence of positive solution for the following Brézis-Nirenberg problem with logarithmic perturbation: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu={\left|u\right|}^{{2}^{\ast }-2}u+λu+μu\log {u}^{2} &x\in Ω, \quad \;\:\, u=0& x\in \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $Ω$ $\subset$ $\R^N$ is a bounded smooth domain, $λ, μ\in \R$, $N\ge3$ and ${2}^{\ast }:=\frac{2N}{N-2}$ is the critical Sobolev exponent for the embedding $H^1_{0}(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^{2^\ast}(Ω)$. The uncertainty of the sign of $s\log s^2$ in $(0, +\infty)$ has some interest in itself. We will…
A monotonicity approach to the study of the asymptotic behavior near corners of solutions to semilinear elliptic equations in domains with a conical boundary point is discussed. The presence of logarithms in the first term of the asymptotic expansion is excluded for boundary profiles sufficiently close to straight conical surfaces.
We construct the Green function for second-order elliptic equations in non-divergence form when the mean oscillations of the coefficients satisfy the Dini condition. We show that the Green's function is BMO in the domain and establish logarithmic pointwise bounds. We also obtain pointwise bounds for first and second derivatives of the Green's function.
We obtain new local Calderon-Zygmund estimates for elliptic equations with matrix-valued weights for linear as well as non-linear equations. We introduce a novel log-BMO condition on the weight M. In particular, we assume smallness of the logarithm of the matrix-valued weight in BMO. This allows to include degenerate, discontinuous weights. We provide examples that show the sharpness of the estimates in terms of the log-BMO-norm.
We establish a logarithmic stability inequality for the inverse problem of determining the non linear term, appearing in a semilinear BVP, from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (abbreviated to DtN map in the rest of this text). Our result can be seen as a stability inequality for an earlier uniqueness result by Isakov and Sylvester [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 47 (1994), 1403-1410].
We deal with nonlinear weighted biharmonic problem in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. The weight is of logarithm type. The nonlinearity is critical in view of Adam's inequalities in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{2,2}_{0}(B,w)$. We prove the existence of non trivial solutions via the critical point theory. The main difficulty is the loss of compactness due to the critical exponential growth of the nonlinear term $f$. We give a new growth condition and we point out its importance for checking the Palais-Smale compactness condition.
We prove that the Dirichlet problem for the Lane-Emden equation in a half-space has no positive solutions which grow at most like the distance to the boundary to a power given by the natural scaling exponent of the equation; in other words, we rule out {\it type~I grow-up} solutions. Such a nonexistence result was previously available only for bounded solutions, or under a restriction on the power in the nonlinearity. Instrumental in the proof are local pointwise bounds for the logarithmic gradient of the solution and its normal derivative, which we also establish.
Thermoacoustic tomography is a term for the inverse problem of determining of one of initial conditions of a hyperbolic equation from boundary measurements. In the past publications both stability estimates and convergent numerical methods for this problem were obtained only under some restrictive conditions imposed on the principal part of the elliptic operator. In this paper logarithmic stability estimates are obatined for an arbitrary variable principal part of that operator. Convergence of the Quasi-Reversibility Method to the exact solution is also established for this case. Both complete…
