The structure of the automorphism group of a simple TAI algebra is studied. In particular, we show that $\frac{\bar{\mrm{Inn}} (A)}{\bar{\mrm{Inn}}_{0} (A)}$ is isomorphic (as a topological group) to an inverse limit of discrete abelian groups for a unital, simple, AH algebra with bounded dimension growth. Consequently, $\frac{\bar{\mrm{Inn}} (A)}{\bar{\mrm{Inn}}_{0} (A)}$ is totally disconnected.
Another consequence of our results is the following: Suppose $A$ is the transformation group \cstar-algebra of a minimal Furstenberg transformation $(\mbb{T}^{n}, h_{n})$ with a unique $h_{n}$-invariant probability measure on $\mbb{T}^{n}$. Then the automorphism group of $A$ is an extension of a simple topological group by the discrete group $\mrm{Aut} (\totalk(A))_{+,1}$.
We give two characterizations of tracially nuclear C*-algebras. The first is that the finite summand of the second dual is hyperfinite. The second is in terms of a variant of the weak* uniqueness property. The necessary condition holds for all tracially nuclear C*-algebras. When the algebra is separable, we prove the sufficiency.
In this paper, we introduce a class of non-unital tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras. Consider the class of ${\rm C^*}$-algebras which are tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (in the sense of Amint, Golestani, Jamali, Phillips's simple tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing or Castillejos, Li, Szabvo's tracial $\mathcal{Z}$-stability). Then $A$ is tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing for any simple ${\rm C^*}$-algebra $A$ in the corresponding class of non-unital tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras.
We show that there is a simple separable unital (non-nuclear) tracially AF algebra $A$ which does not absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal Z$ tensorially, i.e., $A \ncong A\otimes\mathcal Z$.
We show that the following properties of the C*-algebras in a class $\mathcal{P}$ are inherited by simple unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebras in the class of asymptotically tracially in $\mathcal{P}$: $(1)$ $β$-comparison (in the sense of Kirchberg and Rørdam), $(2)$ $n$-comparison (in the sense of Winter).
In this paper, we introduce some classes of generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras. Consider the class of unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebras which are tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (or have tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, or have the property $\rm SP$, or are $m$-almost divisible). Then $A$ is tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (respectively, has tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, has the property $\rm SP$, is weakly ($n, m$)-almost divisible) for any simple unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebra $A$ in the corresponding class of generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebra…
We define a notion of tracial $\mathcal{Z}$-absorption for simple not necessarily unital C*-algebras, study it systematically, and prove its permanence properties. This extends the notion defined by Hirshberg and Orovitz for unital C*-algebras. The Razak-Jacelon algebra, simple C*-algebras with tracial rank zero, and simple purely infinite C*-algebras are tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing. We obtain the first purely infinite examples of tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebras which are not $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing. We use techniques from reduced free products of von~Neumann algebras to co…

We study a tracial notion of Z-absorption for simple, unital C*-algebras. We show that if A is a C*-algebra for which this property holds then A has almost unperforated Cuntz semigroup, and if in addition A is nuclear and separable we show this property is equivalent to having A being Z-absorbing. We furthermore show that this property is preserved under forming certain crossed products by actions satisfying a tracial Rokhlin type property.
We show that if $A$ is a simple (not necessarily unital) tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebra and $α\colon G \to \mathrm{Aut} (A)$ is an action of a finite group $G$ on $A$ with the weak tracial Rokhlin property, then the crossed product $C^*(G, A,α)$ and the fixed point algebra $A^α$ are simple and tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing, and they are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable if, in addition, $A$ is separable and nuclear. The same conclusion holds for all intermediate C*-algebras of the inclusions $A^α\subseteq A$ and $A \subseteq C^*(G, A,α)$. We prove that if $A$ is a simple tracially $\mathc…
In this paper, we introduce a class of generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebras. Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a class of unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebras which have tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, $\rm SP$ property, $m$-almost divisible, weakly $(m, n)$-divisible). Then $A$ has tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing (tracial nuclear dimension at most $n$, $\rm SP$ property, weakly $m$-almost divisible, secondly weakly $(m, n)$-divisible) for any simple unital ${\rm C^*}$-algebra $A$ in the class of this generalized tracial approximation ${\rm C^*}$-algebra…
We revisit the notion of tracial approximation for unital simple C*-algebras. We show that a unital simple separable C*-algebra A is asymptotically tracially in the class of C*-algebras with finite nuclear dimension if and only if A is asymptotically tracially in the class of simple nuclear Z-stable C*-algebras.
We define a tracial analogue of the sequentially split $*$-homomorphism between $C^*$-algebras of Barlak and Szabó and show that several important approximation properties related to the classification theory of $C^*$-algebras pass from the target algebra to the domain algebra. Then we show that the tracial Rokhlin property of the finite group $G$ action on a $C^*$-algebra $A$ gives rise to a tracial version of sequentially split $*$-homomorphism from $A\rtimes_αG$ to $M_{|G|}(A)$ and the tracial Rokhlin property of an inclusion $C^*$-algebras $A\subset P$ with a conditional expectation $E:A \…
We define "tracial" analogs of the Rokhlin property for actions of finite groups, approximate representability of actions of finite abelian groups, and of approximate innerness. We prove four analogs of related "nontracial" results. First, the crossed product of an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra with tracial rank zero by an action of a finite group with the tracial Rokhlin property again has tracial rank zero. Second, an outer action of a finite abelian group on an infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra has the tracial Rokhlin property if and only if i…
We study a pair of $C^*$-algebras by associating a $*$-homomorphism from $A$ to $B$ allowing an approximate left-inverse to the sequence algebra of $A$ in a manner reminiscent of several tracial approximation properties. We are particularly interested how regularity properties in the Elliott classification program pass from $B$ to $A$. Among them, we show that the strict comparison property and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability pass from $B$ to $A$ in our setting.

We study the automorphism group of a unital, simple, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable $C^{*}$-algebra. In this paper, we generalize the results by the authors in \cite{pr_auto} to $\mathcal{Z}$-stable $C^{*}$-algebras $\mathfrak{A}$ such that $\mathfrak{A} \otimes \mathfrak{B}$ is a separable, nuclear, simple, tracially AI algebras satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT) of Rosenberg and Schochet \cite{uct}. By the results of Lin in \cite{hl_asyunit} and Winter in \cite{ww_localelliott}, $C^{\ast}$-algebras that satisfies the above condition are classified via $K$-theory and traces.
Let $A$ be a simple infinite dimensional stably finite unital C*-algebra, and let $B$ be a centrally large subalgebra of $A$. We prove that if $A$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing. If $A$ and $B$ are also separable and nuclear, we prove that $A$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing.
We prove several results of the following general form: automorphisms of (or actions of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ on) certain kinds of simple separable unital C*-algebras $A$ which have a suitable version of the Rokhlin property are generic among all automorphisms (or actions), or in a suitable class of automorphisms. That is, the ones with the version of the Rokhlin property contain a dense $G_δ$-subset of the set of all such automorphisms (or actions). Specifically, we prove the following. If $A$ is stable under tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra $Z,$ and has tracial rank zero, then automorphisms wi…
Let $A$ be a simple separable unital locally approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra (locally ASH algebra). It is shown that $A\otimes Q$ can be tracially approximated by unital Elliott-Thomsen algebras with trivial $\textrm{K}_1$-group, where $Q$ is the universal UHF algebra. In particular, it follows that $A$ is classifiable by the Elliott invariant if $A$ is Jiang-Su stable.
We construct two types of unital separable simple $C^*$-alebras $A_z^{C_1}$ and $A_z^{C_2},$ one is exact but not amenable, and the other is non-exact. Both have the same Elliott invariant as the Jiang-Su algebra, namely, $A_z^{C_i}$ has a unique tracial state, $$(K_0(A_z^{C_i}), K_0(A_z^{C_i})_+, [1_{A_z^{C_i}} ])=(\mathbb Z, \mathbb Z_+,1)$$ and $K_{1}(A_z^{C_i})=\{0\}$ ($i=1,2$). We show that $A_z^{C_i}$ ($i=1,2$) is essentially tracially in the class of separable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-alebras of nuclear dimension 1. $A_z^{C_i}$ has stable rank one, strict comparison for positive elements…
We show that every separable simple tracially approximately divisible $C^*$-algebra has strict comparison, is either purely infinite, or has stable rank one. As a consequence, we show that every (non-unital) finite simple ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebra has stable rank one.
Given a simple, acyclic dimension group $G_{0}$ and countable, torsion-free, abelian group $G_{1}$, we construct a minimal, amenable, étale equivalence relation $R$ on a Cantor set whose associated groupoid $C^{*}$-algebra, $C^{*}(R)$, is tracially AF, and hence classifiable in the Elliott classification scheme for simple, amenable, separable $C^{*}$-algebras, and with $K_{*}(C^{*}(R)) \cong(G_{0}, G_{1})$.
We show that a simple separable unital nuclear nonelementary $C^*$-algebra whose tracial state space has a compact extreme boundary with finite covering dimension admits uniformly tracially large order zero maps from matrix algebras into its central sequence algebra. As a consequence, strict comparison implies $\Z$-stability for these algebras.
For any countable discrete group $G$ with a reduced abelian subgroup of finite index, we construct an action $α$ of $G$ on the universal UHF algebra $\Qq$ using an infinite tensor product of permutation representations of $G$ and show that these actions possess some sort of Rokhlin property. The crossed product $\qag$ is then deduced to be tracially AF with a unique tracial state. We also compute the Elliott invariants in the case that $G$ is abelian.
We give examples of actions of Z/2Z on AF algebras and AT algebras which demonstrate the differences between the (strict) Rokhlin property and the tracial Rokhlin property, and between (strict) approximate representability and tracial approximate representability. Specific results include the following. We determine exactly when a product type action of Z/2Z on a UHF algebra has the tracial Rokhlin property; in particular, unlike for the strict Rokhlin property, every UHF algebra admits such an action. We prove that Blackadar's action of Z/2Z on the 2^{\infty} UHF algebra, whose crossed produc…
We show that every unital amenable separable simple $C^*$-algebra with finite tracial rank which satisfies the UCT has in fact tracial rank at most one. We also show that unital separable simple $C^*$-algebrass which are "tracially" locally AH with slow dimension growth are ${\cal Z}$-stable. As a consequence, unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras which are locally AH with no dimension growth are isomorphic to a unital simple AH-algebra with no dimension growth.
We show that the UCT problem for separable, nuclear $\mathrm C^*$-algebras relies only on whether the UCT holds for crossed products of certain finite cyclic group actions on the Razak-Jacelon algebra. This observation is analogous to and in fact recovers a characterization of the UCT problem in terms of finite group actions on the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal O_2$ established in previous work by the authors. Although based on a similar approach, the new conceptual ingredients in the finite context are the recent advances in the classification of stably projectionless $\mathrm C^*$-algebras, as wel…
Let X be an infinite compact metric space, α: X \to X a minimal homeomorphism, u the unitary implementing αin the transformation group C*-algebra, and S a class of separable nuclear C*-algebras that contains all unital hereditary C*-subalgebras of C*-algebras in S. Motivated by the success of tracial approximation by finite dimensional C*-algebras as an abstract characterization of classifiable C*-algebras and the idea that classification results for C*-algebras tensored with UHF algebras can be used to derive classification results up to tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra Z, we prove that th…
Glimm's theorem says that a UHF algebra is almost embedded in a separable $C^*$-algebra not of type I. Applying his methods we obtain a covariant version of his result; a UHF algebra with a product type automorphism is covariantly embedded in such a $C^*$-algebra equipped with an automorphism with full Connes spectrum.
The paper is devoted to 2-local automorphisms on $AW^\ast$-algebras. Using the technique of matrix algebras over a unital Banach algebra we prove that any 2-local automorphism on an arbitrary $AW^\ast$-algebra without finite type~I direct summands is a global automorphism.
We construct Hopf algebra isomorphisms of discrete multiplier Hopf C*-algebras, and Hopf AF C*-algebras (generalized quantum UHF algebras), from K-theoretical data. Some of the intermediate results are of independent interest, such as a result that Jordan maps of Hopf algebras intertwine antipodes, and the applications to automorphisms of Hopf algebras.
We obtain two characterizations of the bi-inner Hopf *-automorphisms of a finite-dimensional Hopf C*-algebra, by means of an analysis of the structure of convolution products in this class of Hopf C*-algebra.
For projectionless C*-algebras absorbing the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially, we study a kind of the Rohlin property for autmorphisms. We show that the crossed products obtained by automorphisms with this Rohlin property also absorb the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially under a mild technical condition on the C*-algebras. In particular, for the Jiang-Su algebra we show the uniqueness up to outer conjugacy of the automorphism with this Rohlin property.
The Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra $E_{n+1}$ for $n\geq1$ is the universal C*-algebra generated by $n+1$ isometries with mutually orthogonal ranges. In this paper, we investigate the automorphism groups of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras and determine their homotopy groups.
Certain classes of automorphisms of recued amalgamated free products of C*-algebras are shown to have Brown-Voiculescu topological entropy zero. Also, for automorphisms of exact C*-algebras, the Connes-Narnhofer-Thirring entropy is shown to be bounded above by the Brown-Voiculescu entropy. These facts are applied to generalize Stormer's result about entropy of automorphisms of the II_1-factor of a free group.
In this paper an automorphism of a unital C*-algebra is said to be /locally inner/ if on any element it agrees with some inner automorphism. We make a fairly complete study of local innerness in von Neumann algebras, incorporating comparison with the pointwise innerness of Haagerup-Stormer. On some von Neumann algebras, including all with separable predual, a locally inner automorphism must be inner. But a transfinitely recursive construction demonstrates that this is not true in general. As an application, we show that the diagonal sum descends to a well-defined map on the automorphism orbits…
We present and study C*-algebras generated by "periodic weighted creation operators" on the Fock space associated with an automorphism $α$ on a C*-algebra $A$. These algebras can be viewed as generalized Bunce-Deddens algebras associated with the automorphism and can be written as a certain direct limit. We prove a crossed product presentation for such an algebra and find a necessary and sufficient condition for it to be simple. In the case where the automorphism is induced by an irrational rotation (on $C(\mathbb{T})$) we compute the K-theory groups and obtain a complete classification of the…
For any abstract subfactor planar algebra $P$, there exists a finite index extremal subfactor $M_0 \subset M_1$ with $P$ as its standard invariant. In this paper, we classify the automorphism group of a bipartite graph planar algebra, and obtain subfactor planar subalgebras by taking fixed points under groups of automorphisms. This construction provides both new examples of subfactors and new descriptions of the planar algebras of previously known examples.
In this article I study a number of topological and algebraic dimension type properties of simple C*-algebras and their interplay. In particular, a simple C*-algebra is defined to be (tracially) (m,\bar{m})-pure, if it has (strong tracial) m-comparison and is (tracially) \bar{m}-almost divisible. These notions are related to each other, and to nuclear dimension. The main result says that if a separable, simple, nonelementary, unital C*-algebra A with locally finite nuclear dimension is (m,\bar{m})-pure, then it absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. It follows that A is Z-stable if and on…
We prove that the automorphisms of any separable C*-algebra that does not have continuous trace are not classifiable by countable structures up to unitary equivalence. This implies a dichotomy for the Borel complexity of the relation of unitary equivalence of automorphisms of a separable unital C*-algebra: Such relation is either smooth or not even classifiable by countable structures.
We show that, if A is a separable simple unital C*-algebra which absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially and which has real rank zero and finite decomposition rank, then A is tracially AF in the sense of Lin, without any restriction on the tracial state space. As a consequence, the Elliott conjecture is true for the class of C*-algebras as above which, additionally, satisfy the Universal Coefficients Theorem. In particular, such algebras are completely determined by their ordered K-theory. They are approximately homogeneous of topological dimension less than or equal to 3, approximately sub…
We prove that every $2$-local automorphism on a finite-dimensional semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathcal{L}$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is an automorphism. We also show that each finite-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathcal{L}$ with $\dim \mathcal{L}\geq 2$ admits a $2$-local automorphism which is not an automorphism.
We prove that every AF-algebra is isomorphic to a crossed product of a commutative AF-algebra by a partial automorphism. The case of UHF-algebras is treated in detail.
