The purpose of this article is twofold. First we outline a general construction scheme for producing simply-connected minimal symplectic 4-manifolds with small Euler characteristics. Using this scheme, we illustrate how to obtain irreducible symplectic 4-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to $\CP#(2k+1)\CPb$ for $k = 1,...,4$, or to $3\CP# (2l+3)\CPb$ for $l =1,...,6$. Secondly, for each of these homeomorphism types, we show how to produce an infinite family of pairwise nondiffeomorphic nonsymplectic 4-manifolds belonging to it. In particular, we prove that there are infinitely many exotic irreducible nonsymplectic smooth structures on $\CP#3\CPb$, $3\CP#5\CPb$ and $3\CP#7\CPb$.
This paper considers "geometric" ideal triangulations of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds, i.e. decompositions into positive volume ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra. We exhibit infinitely many geometric ideal triangulations of the figure eight knot complement. As far as we know, this is the first construction of infinitely many geometric triangulations of a cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold. In contrast, our approach does not extend to the figure eight sister manifold, and it is unknown if there are infinitely many geometric triangulations for this manifold.
We prove that all maximal-tb Legendrian torus links (n,m) in the standard contact 3-sphere, except for (2,m),(3,3),(3,4) and (3,5), admit infinitely many Lagrangian fillings in the standard symplectic 4-ball. This is proven by constructing infinite order Lagrangian concordances which induce faithful actions of the modular group PSL(2,Z) and the mapping class group M(0,4) into the coordinate rings of algebraic varieties associated to Legendrian links. Our results imply that there exist Lagrangian concordance monoids with subgroups of exponential-growth, and yield Stein surfaces homotopic to a 2…
We introduce a new generalization of Gompf nuclei and give applications. We construct infinitely many exotic smooth structures for a large class of compact 4-manifolds with boundary, regarding topological invariants. We prove that a large class of closed 3-manifolds (including disjoint unions of Stein fillable 3-manifolds) bound compact connected oriented 4-manifolds which admit infinitely many smooth structures. To detect smooth structures, we introduce a relative genus function. As a side result, we show that log transform and knot surgery of 4-manifolds do not admit any Stein structure, und…
We give several criteria on a closed, oriented 3-manifold that will imply that it is the boundary of a (simply connected) 4-manifold that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures. We also show that any weakly fillable contact 3-manifold, or contact 3-manifolds with non-vanishing Heegaard Floer invariant, is the boundary of a simply connected 4-manifolds that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures each of which supports a symplectic structure with concave boundary, that is there are infinitely many exotic caps for any such contact manifold.
It is known that every compact Stein 4-manifolds can be embedded into a simply connected, minimal, closed, symplectic 4-manifold. By using this property, we discuss a new method of constructing corks. This method generates a large class of new corks including all the previously known ones. We prove that every one of these corks can knot infinitely many different ways in a closed smooth manifold, by showing that cork twisting along them gives different exotic smooth structures. We also give an example of infinitely many disjoint embeddings of a fixed cork into a non-compact 4-manifold which pro…
In this paper we find infinitely many lattices in $SL(4,\mathbb{R})$ each of which contains thin subgroups commensurable with the figure-eight knot group.
We introduce a new technique that is used to show that the complex projective plane blown up at 6, 7, or 8 points has infinitely many distinct smooth structures. None of these smooth structures admit smoothly embedded spheres with self-intersection -1, i.e. they are minimal. In addition, none these smooth structures admit an underlying symplectic structure. Shortly after the appearance of a preliminary version of this article, Park, Stipsicz, and Szabo used the techniques described herein to show that the complex projective plane blown up at 5 points has infinitely many distinct smooth structu…
Motivated by a construction of Fintushel and Stern, we show that the topological 4--manifold $CP^2#5{\bar CP^2}$ supports infinitely many distinct smooth structures.
For every integer g greater than or equal to 2, there exist infinitely many pairwise nonhomeomorphic smooth 4-manifolds that admit genus-g Lefschetz fibrations over S^2 but do not carry any complex structure with either orientation. This extends a recent result of Ozbagci and Stipsicz.
We show that the smooth $4$-manifold $M$ obtained by attaching a $2$-handle to $B^4$ along a certain knot $K\subset \partial B^4$ admits infinitely many absolutely exotic copies $M_n$, $n=0,1,2..$, such that each copy $M_n$ is obtained by attaching $2$-handle to a fixed compact smooth contractible manifold $W$ along the iterates $f^{n}(c)$ of a knot $c\subset \partial W$ by a diffeomorphism $f:\partial W \to \partial W$. This generalizes the example in author's 1991 paper, which corresponds to $n=1$ case.
We show that, under a certain condition, contact 5-manifolds can `coarsely' distinguish smooth structures on compact Stein 4-manifolds via contact open books. We also give a simple sufficient condition for an infinite family of Stein 4-manifolds to have an infinite subfamily of pairwise non-diffeomorphic Stein 4-manifolds. The proofs rely on the adjunction inequality. We remark that there are various examples of infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein 4-manifolds whose smooth structures can be distinguished by these results.
We prove that there are infinitely many $(1,1)$-knots which are topologically slice, but not smoothly slice, which was a conjecture proposed by Béla András Rácz.
We give two constructions of surfaces in simply-connected 4-manifolds with non simply-connected complements. One is an iteration of the twisted rim surgery introduced by the first author. We also construct, for any group G satisfying some simple conditions, a simply-connected symplectic manifold containing a symplectic surface whose complement has fundamental group G. In each case, we produce infinitely many smoothly inequivalent surfaces that are equivalent up to smooth s-cobordism and hence are topologically equivalent for good groups.
We show that any simply connected topological closed $4$-manifold punctured along any compact, totally disconnected tame subset $Λ$ admits a continuum of smoothings which are not diffeomorphic to any leaf of a $C^{1,0}$ codimension one foliation on a compact manifold. This includes the remarkable case of $S^4$ punctured along a tame Cantor set. This is the lowest reasonable regularity for this realization problem. These results come from a new criterion for nonleaves in $C^{1,0}$ regularity. We also include a new criterion for nonleaves in the $C^2$-category. Some of our smooth nonleaves are "…
Using min-max theory, we show that in any closed Riemannian manifold of dimension at least 3 and at most 7, there exist infinitely many smoothly embedded closed minimal hypersurfaces. It proves a conjecture of S.-T. Yau. This paper builds on the methods developed by F. C. Marques and A. Neves.
We construct infinitely many examples of pairs of isospectral but non-isometric $1$-cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. These examples have infinite discrete spectrum and the same Eisenstein series. Our constructions are based on an application of Sunada's method in the cusped setting, and so in addition our pairs are finite covers of the same degree of a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-orbifold (indeed manifold) and also have the same complex length-spectra. Finally we prove that any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold isospectral to the figure-eight knot complement is homeomorphic to the figure-eight kno…
In this paper we use techniques from convex projective geometry to produce many new examples of thin subgroups of lattices in special linear groups that are isomorphic to the fundamental groups of finite volume hyperbolic manifolds. More specifically, we show that for a large class of arithmetic lattices in SO(n,1) it is possible to find infinitely many non-commensurable lattices in SL(n+1,R) that contain a thin subgroup isomorphic to a finite index subgroup of the original arithmetic lattice. This class of arithmetic lattices includes all non-cocompact arithmetic lattices and all cocompact ar…
Motivated by Stipsicz and Szabó's exotic 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8, we construct a family of simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with b_2^+=3 and b_2^-=8. As a corollary, we conclude that the topological 4-manifold 3{CP}^2#8{-CP}^2 admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures.
We prove that there exist infinitely many topologically slice knots which cannot bound a smooth null-homologous disk in any definite 4-manifold. Furthermore, we show that we can take such knots so that they are linearly independent in the the knot concordance group.
We prove that for every natural number k there are simply connected topological four-manifolds which have at leat k distinct smooth structures supporting Einstein metrics, and also have infinitely many distinct smooth structures not supporting Einstein metrics. Moreover, all these smooth structures become diffeomorphic after connected sum with only one copy of the complex projective plane. We prove that manifolds with these properties cover a large geographical area.
In the early 1980s, S. T. Yau conjectured that any compact Riemannian three-manifold admits an infinite number of closed immersed minimal surfaces. We use min-max theory for the area functional to prove this conjecture in the positive Ricci curvature setting. More precisely, we show that every compact Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature and dimension at most seven contains infinitely many smooth, closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces. In the last section we mention some open problems related with the geometry of these minimal hypersurfaces.
A classical result by Marston Morse asserts that on some ellipsoids of ${\mathbb R}^3$ there exists exactly 3 closed and simple geodesics. The goal of this presentation is to prove that this rigidity result does not extend to higher dimensions and, more precisely, on any smooth closed riemannian manifod of arbitrary dimension between 3 and 7 there exists infinitely many closed embedded minimal surfaces. We are going to present the origins of this theorem as well as it's proof given recently by Antoine Song.
In this paper, we prove that in any compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary, of dimension at least 3 and at most 7, there exist infinitely many almost properly embedded free boundary minimal hypersurfaces. This settles the free boundary version of Yau's conjecture. The proof uses adaptions of A. Song's work and the early works by Marques-Neves in their resolution to Yau's conjecture, together with Li-Zhou's regularity theorem for free boundary min-max minimal hypersurfaces.
It is known that every exotic smooth structure on a simply connected closed 4-manifold is determined by a codimention zero compact contractible Stein submanifold and an involution on its boundary. Such a pair is called a cork. In this paper, we construct infinitely many knotted imbeddings of corks in 4-manifolds such that they induce infinitely many different exotic smooth structures. We also show that we can imbed an arbitrary finite number of corks disjointly into 4-manifolds, so that the corresponding involutions on the boundary of the contractible 4-manifolds give mutually different exotic…
We prove that there are infinitely many pairs of homeomorphic non-diffeomorphic smooth 4-manifolds, such that in each pair one manifold admits an Einstein metric and the other does not. We also show that there are closed 4-manifolds with two smooth structures which admit Einstein metrics with opposite signs of the scalar curvature.
We say that a topologically embedded 3-sphere in a smoothing of Euclidean 4-space is a barrier provided, roughly, no diffeomorphism of the 4-manifold moves the 3-sphere off itself. In this paper we construct infinitely many one parameter families of distinct smoothings of 4-space with barrier 3-spheres. \par The existence of barriers implies, amongst other things, that the isometry group of these manifolds, in any smooth metric, is finite. In particular, S^1 can not act smoothly and effectively on any smoothing of 4-space with barrier 3-spheres.
Smooth functions which are Morse on preimages of values not being local extrema and constructing natural functions of the class on connected sums of manifolds admitting these functions
