We consider various inequalities for polynomials, with an emphasis on the most fundamental inequalities of approximation theory. In the sequel a key role is played by the generalized Minkowski functional α(K,x), already being used by Minkowski and contemporaries and having occurred in approximation theory in the work of Rivlin and Shapiro in the early sixties. We try to compare real, geometric methods and complex, pluripotential theoretical approaches, where possible, and formulate a number of questions to be decided in the future. An extensive bibliography is given to direct the reader even in topics we do not have space to cover in more detail.
In this paper, we extend the large sieve type estimates to sums involving pth powers of trigonometric polynomials. An approach to such estimates that does not rely on the usual L^2-technique is given. Our method is based on comparing the norm and the spectral radius of convolution operators on a normed space of trigonometric polynomials.
The statements in the title are explained and proved, as a little exercise in elementary normed vector space theory at the level of Chapter 5 of Dieudonné's "Foundations of Mathematical Analysis". A connection to recent moment bounds for submartingales is sketched.
H. N. Mhaskar obtained the inequalities for derivative of polynomial approximation with Freud type weight. In this paper, we showed the counterpart of the inequalities with Erdos type weight.
Higher order Bernstein- and Markov-type inequalities are established for trigonometric polynomials on compact subsets of the real line and algebraic polynomials on compact subsets of the unit circle. In the case of Markov-type inequalities we assume that the compact set satisfies an interval condition.
We prove a few interesting inequalities for Lorentz polynomials including Nikolskii-type inequalities. A highlight of the paper is a sharp Markov-type inequality for polynomials of degree at most n with real coefficients and with derivative not vanishing in the open unit disk. The result may be compared with Erdos's classical Markov-type inequality (1940) for polynomials of degree at most n having only real zeros outside the interval (-1,1).
We prove limit equalities between the sharp constants in weighted Nikolskii-type inequalities for multivariate polynomials on an $m$-dimensional cube and ball and the corresponding constants for entire functions of exponential type.
Using the multilinear theory of oscillatory integral operators, we establish a square function inequality with implications to moment inequalities for discrete exponential sums which frequencies lie on curved hyper-surfaces. In particular a new distributional estimate for toral eigenfunctions is established.
In this article we consider a method of proving a class of inequalities of the form (1). The method is based on the precise approximations of the sine and cosine functions by Maclaurin polynomials of given order. By using this method we present new proofs of some inequalities from the articles C.-P. Chen, W.-S. Cheung [J. Inequal. Appl. 2012:72 (2012)] and Z.-J. Sun, L. Zhu [ISRN Math. Anal. (2011)].
Let $V\subset\R^m$ be a centrally symmetric convex body and let $V^*\subset\R^m$ be its polar. We prove limit relations between the sharp constants in the multivariate Markov-Bernstein-Nikolskii type inequalities for algebraic polynomials on $V^*$ and the corresponding constants for entire functions of exponential type with the spectrum in $V$.
We establish some new Turán's type inequalities for orthogonal polynomials defined by a three-term recurrence with monotonic coefficients. As a corollary we deduce asymptotic bounds on the extreme zeros of orthogonal polynomials with polynomially growing coefficients of the three-term recurrence.
Askey and Gasper (1976) proved a trigonometric inequality which improves another trigonometric inequality found by M. S. Robertson (1945). Here these inequalities are reformulated in terms of the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind $T_n$ and then put into a one-parametric family of inequalities. The extreme value of the parameter is found for which these inequalities hold true. As a step towards the proof of this result we establish the following complement to the finite increment theorem specialized to $T_n^{\prime}$: $$ T_n^{\prime}(1)-T_n^{\prime}(x)\geq (1-x)\,T_n^{\prime\prime}(x)\,,\q…
We study a variant of the majorization relation. In particular we consider inequalities involving some Schur-concave symmetric polynomials related to the multinomial expansion. We also discuss how these topics were motivated by conjectures on sharp Lp inequalities between complex exponential sums conjectured by Hardy and Littlewood (still open problems), and why the usual majorization relation does not hold in that context.
Starting out from a question posed by T. Erdélyi and J. Szabados, we consider Schur-type inequalities for the classes of complex algebraic polynomials having no zeroes within the unit disk D. The class of polynomials with no zeroes in D - also known as Bernstein- or Lorentz-class - was studied in detail earlier. For real polynomials utilizing the Bernstein-Lorentz representation as convex combinations of fundamental polynomials (1-x)^k(1+x)^{n-k}, G. Lorentz, T. Erdélyi and J. Szabados proved a number of improved versions of Schur- (and also Bernstein- and Markov-) type inequalities. Here we i…
Fourier series in orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure $ν$ on $[-1,1]$ are studied when $ν$ is a linear combination of a generalized Jacobi weight and finitely many Dirac deltas in $[-1,1]$. We prove some weighted norm inequalities for the partial sum operators $S_n$, their maximal operator $S^*$ and the commutator $[M_b, S_n]$, where $M_b$ denotes the operator of pointwise multiplication by $b \in \BMO$. We also prove some norm inequalities for $S_n$ when $ν$ is a sum of a Laguerre weight on $\R^+$ and a positive mass on $0$.
A recent conjecture by I. Raşa asserts that the sum of the squared Bernstein basis polynomials is a convex function in $[0,1]$. This conjecture turns out to be equivalent to a certain upper pointwise estimate of the ratio $P_n^{\prime}(x)/P_n(x)$ for $x\geq 1$, where $P_n$ is the $n$-th Legendre polynomial. Here, we prove both upper and lower pointwise estimates for the ratios $\big(P_n^{(λ)}(x)\big)^{\prime}/P_n^{(λ)}(x)$, $~x\geq 1$, where $P_n^{(λ)}$ is the $n$-th ultraspherical polynomial. In particular, we validate Raşa's conjecture.
We summarize researches - in great deal jointly with my host Y. Sarantopoulos and his PhD. students V. Anagnostopoulos and A. Pappas - started by a Marie Curie fellowship in 2001 and is still continuing. The project was to study multivariate polynomial inequalities. In the course of work we realized the role of the ``generalized Minkowski functional'', to which we devoted a throughout survey. Resulting from this, infinite dimensional extensions of Chebyshev's extremal problems were tackled successfully. Investigating Bernstein-Markov constants for homogeneous polynomials of real normed spaces …
In this paper we establish $L^p$-boundedness properties for variation, oscillation and jump operators associated with Riesz transforms and Poisson semigroups related to Laguerre polynomial expansions.
In this paper we explore inequalities between symmetric homogeneous polynomials of degree four of three real variables and three nonnegative real variables. The main theorems describe the cases in which the smallest possible coefficient is not expressed by the other coefficients. The problem is resolved by introducing a parametric representation.
We prove some sufficient conditions implying $l^p$ inequalities of the form $||x||_p \leq ||y||_p$ for vectors $ x, y \in [0,\infty)^n$ and for $p$ in certain positive real intervals. Our sufficient conditions are strictly weaker than the usual majorization relation. The conditions are expressed in terms of certain homogeneous symmetric polynomials in the entries of the vectors. These polynomials include the elementary symmetric polynomials as a special case. We also give a characterization of the majorization relation by means of symmetric polynomials.
Let $g$ and $h$ be real-valued arithmetic functions, positive and normalized. Specific choices within the following general scheme of recursively defined polynomials \begin{equation*} P_n^{g,h}(x):= \frac{x}{h(n)} \sum_{k=1}^{n} g(k) \, P_{n-k}^{g,h}(x), \end{equation*} with initial value $P_{0}^{g,h}(x)=1$ encode information about several classical, widely studied polynomials. This includes Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, associated Laguerre polynomials, and the Nekrasov--Okounkov polynomials. In this paper we prove that for $g(n)=n$ and fixed $h$ we obtain orthogonal polynomial seq…
We present an algorithm for computing a holonomic system for a definite integral of a holonomic function over a domain defined by polynomial inequalities. If the integrand satisfies a holonomic difference-differential system including parameters, then a holonomic difference-differential system for the integral can also be computed. In the algorithm, holonomic distributions (generalized functions in the sense of L. Schwartz) are inevitably involved even if the integrand is a usual function.
A Bernstein type inequality is obtained for the Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{α,β}(x)$, which is uniform for all degrees $n\ge0$, all real $α,β\ge0$, and all values $x\in [-1,1]$. It provides uniform bounds on a complete set of matrix coefficients for the irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ with a decay of $d^{-1/4}$ in the dimension $d$ of the representation. Moreover it complements previous results of Krasikov on a conjecture of Erdélyi, Magnus and Nevai.
In the setting of a Lie group of polynomial volume growth, we derive inequalities of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type, where the weights involved are powers of the Carnot-Caratheodory distance associated with a fixed system of vector fields which satisfy the Hörmander condition. The use of weak $L^p$ spaces is crucial in our proofs and we formulate these inequalities within the framework of $L^{p,q}$ Lorentz spaces (a scale of (quasi)-Banach spaces which extend the more classical $L^p$ Lebesgue spaces) thereby obtaining a refinement of, for instance, Sobolev and Hardy-Sobolev inequalities.
The aim of this paper is to present a new algorithm for proving mixed trigonometric-polynomial inequalities by reducing to polynomial inequalities. Finally, we show the great applicability of this algorithm and as examples, we use it to analyze some new rational (Pade) approximations of the function $\cos^2(x)$, and to improve a class of inequalities by Z.-H. Yang. The results of our analysis could be implemented by means of an automated proof assistant, so our work is a contribution to the library of automatic support tools for proving various analytic inequalities.
We study $L^p(μ) \to L^q(ν)$ mapping properties of the convolution operator $ T_λf(x)=λ*(fμ)(x)$ and of the corresponding maximal operator $ {\mathcal T}_λf(x)=\sup_{t>0} |λ_t*(fμ)(x)|$, where $λ$ is a tempered distribution, and $μ$ and $ν$ are compactly supported measures satisfying the polynomial growth bounds $μ(B(x,r)) \leq Cr^{s_μ}$ and $ν(B(x,r)) \leq Cr^{s_ν}$. As a result, we prove variants of the classical $L^p$-improving (Littman; Strichartz) and maximal (Stein) inequalities in a setting where the Plancherel formula is not available. Connections with the David-Semmes conjecture are a…
We consider a dominance order on positive vectors induced by the elementary symmetric polynomials. Under this dominance order we provide conditions that yield simple proofs of several monotonicity questions. Notably, our approach yields a quick (4 line) proof of the so-called \emph{"sum-of-squared-logarithms"} inequality conjectured in (P.~Neff, B.~Eidel, F.~Osterbrink, and R.~Martin, \emph{Applied Math. \& Mechanics., 2013}; P.~Neff, Y.~Nakatsukasa, and A.~Fischle; \emph{SIMAX, 35, 2014}). This inequality has been the subject of several recent articles, and only recently it received a full pr…
For rational functions, we use simple but elegant techniques to strengthen generalizations of certain results which extend some widely known polynomial inequalities of Erdös-Lax and Turán to rational functions R. In return these reinforced results, in the limiting case, lead to the corresponding refinements of the said polynomial inequalities. As an illustration and as an application of our results, we obtain some new improvements of the Erdós-Lax and Turán type inequalities for polynomials. These improved results take into account the size of the constant term and the leading coefficient of t…
The present paper is about Bernstein-type estimates for Jacobi polynomials and their applications to various branches in mathematics. This is an old topic but we want to add a new wrinkle by establishing some intriguing connections with dispersive estimates for a certain class of Schrödinger equations whose Hamiltonian is given by the generalized Laguerre operator. More precisely, we show that dispersive estimates for the Schrödinger equation associated with the generalized Laguerre operator are connected with Bernstein-type inequalities for Jacobi polynomials. We use known uniform estimates f…
