We summarize researches - in great deal jointly with my host Y. Sarantopoulos and his PhD. students V. Anagnostopoulos and A. Pappas - started by a Marie Curie fellowship in 2001 and is still continuing.
The project was to study multivariate polynomial inequalities. In the course of work we realized the role of the ``generalized Minkowski functional'', to which we devoted a throughout survey. Resulting from this, infinite dimensional extensions of Chebyshev's extremal problems were tackled successfully. Investigating Bernstein-Markov constants for homogeneous polynomials of real normed spaces led us to the application of potential theory. Also we found at first unexpected connections of polarization constants of R^2 and C^2 to Chebyshev constants of S^2 and S^3, respectively. In the study of polarization constants, a further application of potential theory occurred. This led us to realize that the theory of rendezvous numbers can be much better explained by potential theory, too. Our methods for obtaining Bernstein type pointwise gradient estimates for polynomials were compared in a recent case study to the yields of pluripotential theoretic methods. The findings were that the two rather different methods give exactly the same results, but the two currently standing conjectures mutually exclude each other.
We prove limit relations between the sharp constants in the multivariate Bernstein-Nikolskii type inequalities for trigonometric polynomials and entire functions of exponential type with the spectrum in a centrally symmetric convex body.
Let $V$ be a symmetric convex body in $\R^m$. We prove sharp Bernstein-type inequalities for entire functions of exponential type with the spectrum in $V$ and discuss certain properties of the extremal functions. Markov-type inequalities with sharp constants for algebraic polynomials on $V$ and certain non-symmetric convex bodies are proved as well.
It is demonstrated that multiplier methods naturally yield better constants in strong converse inequalities for the Bernstein-Durrmeyer operator. The absolute constants obtained in some of the inequalities are independent of the weight and the dimension. The estimates are stated in terms of the $K$-functional that is naturally associated to the operator.
We prove invariance theorems for general inequalities of different metrics and apply them to limit relations between the sharp constants in the multivariate Markov-Bernstein-Nikolskii type inequalities with the polyharmonic operator for algebraic polynomials on the unit sphere and the unit ball in $\R^m$ and the corresponding constants for entire functions of spherical type on $\R^m$. Certain relations in the univariate weighted spaces are discussed as well.
Recently Dritschel proves that any positive multivariate Laurent polynomial can be factorized into a sum of square magnitudes of polynomials. We first give another proof of the Dritschel theorem. Our proof is based on the univariate matrix Fejer-Riesz theorem. Then we discuss a computational method to find approximates of polynomial matrix factorization. Some numerical examples will be shown. Finally we discuss how to compute nonnegative Laurent polynomial factorizations in the multivariate setting.
Differential properties for orthogonal polynomials in several variables are studied. We consider multivariate orthogonal polynomials whose gradients satisfy some quasi--orthogonality conditions. We obtain several characterizations for these polynomials including the analogous of the semiclassical Pearson differential equation, the structure relation and a differential--difference equation.
This paper considers the extension of classical Lagrange interpolation in one real or complex variable to "polynomials of one quaternionic variable". To do this we develop some aspects of the theory of such polynomials. We then give a number of related multivariate polynomial interpolation schemes for ${\mathbb{R}}^4$ and ${\mathbb{C}}^2$ with good geometric properties, and some aspects of least interpolation and of Kergin interpolation.
How do we take repeated derivatives of composed multivariate functions? for one-dimensional functions, the common tools consist of the Faá di Bruno formula with Bell polynomials; while there are extensions of the Faá di Bruno formula, there are no corresponding Bell polynomials. In this paper, we generalize the single-variable Bell polynomials to take vector-valued arguments indexed by multi-indices which we use to rewrite the Faá di Bruno formula to find derivatives of $\textbf{f}(\textbf{g}(\textbf{x}))$.
Multivariate orthogonal polynomials can be introduced by using a moment functional defined on the linear space of polynomials in several variables with real coefficients. We study the so-called Uvarov and Christoffel modifications obtained by adding to the moment functional a finite set of mass points, or by multiplying it times a polynomial of total degree 2, respectively. Orthogonal polynomials associated with modified moment functionals will be studied, as well as the impact of the modification in useful properties of the orthogonal polynomials. Finally, some illustrative examples will be g…
H. N. Mhaskar obtained the inequalities for derivative of polynomial approximation with Freud type weight. In this paper, we showed the counterpart of the inequalities with Erdos type weight.
We prove limit equalities between the sharp constants in weighted Nikolskii-type inequalities for multivariate polynomials on an $m$-dimensional cube and ball and the corresponding constants for entire functions of exponential type.
Higher order Bernstein- and Markov-type inequalities are established for trigonometric polynomials on compact subsets of the real line and algebraic polynomials on compact subsets of the unit circle. In the case of Markov-type inequalities we assume that the compact set satisfies an interval condition.
We prove a few interesting inequalities for Lorentz polynomials including Nikolskii-type inequalities. A highlight of the paper is a sharp Markov-type inequality for polynomials of degree at most n with real coefficients and with derivative not vanishing in the open unit disk. The result may be compared with Erdos's classical Markov-type inequality (1940) for polynomials of degree at most n having only real zeros outside the interval (-1,1).
The paper develops applications of symmetric orbit functions, known from irreducible representations of simple Lie groups, in numerical analysis. It is shown that these functions have remarkable properties which yield to cubature formulas, approximating a weighted integral of any function by a weighted finite sum of function values, in connection with any simple Lie group. The cubature formulas are specialized for simple Lie groups of rank two. An optimal approximation of any function by multivariate polynomials arising from symmetric orbit functions is discussed.
We introduce a multivariate analogue of Bernoulli polynomials and give their fundamental properties: difference and differential relations, symmetry, explicit formula, inversion formula, multiplication theorem, and binomial type formula. Further, we consider a multivariate analogue of the multiple Bernoulli polynomials and give their fundamental properties.
We introduce a new multivariate orthogonal polynomial which is a 2-parameter deformation of the spherical polynomial by harmonic analysis on symmetric cone. This is also regarded as a multivariate analogue of the circular Jacobi polynomial. Further, the weight function of its orthogonality relation coincides with the circular Jacobi ensemble defined by Bourgade et al.. We also obtain its main properties : generating function, pseudo differential equation and deteraminant expression.
We introduce some multivariate analogues of Meixner, Charlier and Krawtchouk polynomials, and establish their main properties, that is, duality, degenerate limits, generating functions, orthogonality relations, difference equations, recurrence formulas and determinant expressions. A particularly important and interesting result is that "the generating function of the generating function" for the Meixner polynomials coincides with the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials, which has previously not been known even for the one variable case. Actually, main properties for the multivariat…
In this paper, by the use of Potential Theory, some representation results for multivariate functions from the Sobolev spaces in terms of the double layer potential and the fundamental solution of Laplace's equation are pointed out. Applications for multivariate inequalities of Ostrowski type are also provided.
Harmonic analysis on Hermitian symmetric spaces of tube type is a natural framework for introducing multivariate Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. Their main properties are established in this setting: generating and determinantal formulae, difference equations. As an application we consider the problem of evaluating moments related to a multivariate Barnes type integral involving the Harish-Chandra $c$-function of a symmetric cone.
The orthogonality relations of multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials are discussed. In case of two variables, the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality is given by Grünbaum and Rahman in [SIGMA 6 (2010), 090, 12 pages, arXiv:1007.4327]. In this study, a simple proof of the necessary and sufficient condition of orthogonality is given for a general case.
We present a formula describing the asymptotics of a class of multivariate orthogonal polynomials with hyperoctahedral symmetry as the degree tends to infinity. The polynomials under consideration are characterized by a factorized weight function satisfying certain analyticity assumptions. As an application, the large-degree asymptotics of the Koornwinder-Macdonald BC_N-type multivariate Askey-Wilson polynomials is determined.
We discuss the Siciak-Zaharjuta extremal function of pluripotential theory for the unit ball in C^d for spaces of polynomials with the notion of degree determined by a convex body P. We then use it to analyze the approximation properties of such polynomial spaces, and how these may differ depending on the function f to be approximated.
Classical Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate derivatives. Delta Gončarov polynomials are polynomials which interpolate delta operators, e.g., forward and backward difference operators. We extend fundamental aspects of the theory of classical bivariate Gončarov polynomials and univariate delta Gončarov polynomials to the multivariate setting using umbral calculus. After introducing systems of delta operators, we define multivariate delta Gončarov polynomials, show that the associated interpolation problem is always solvable, and derive a generating function (an Appell relati…
In recent joint work (2021), we introduced a novel multivariate polynomial attached to every metric space - in particular, to every finite simple connected graph $G$ - and showed it has several attractive properties. First, it is multi-affine and real-stable (leading to a hitherto unstudied delta-matroid for each graph $G$). Second, the polynomial specializes to (a transform of) the characteristic polynomial $χ_{D_G}$ of the distance matrix $D_G$; as well as recovers the entire graph, where $χ_{D_G}$ cannot do so. Third, the polynomial encodes the determinants of a family of graphs formed from…
Gasper & Rahman's multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials are shown to arise as connection coefficients between families of multivariate $q$-Hahn or $q$-Jacobi polynomials. The families of $q$-Hahn polynomials are constructed as nested Clebsch--Gordan coefficients for the positive-discrete series representations of the quantum algebra $su_q(1,1)$. This gives an interpretation of the multivariate $q$-Racah polynomials in terms of $3nj$ symbols. It is shown that the families of $q$-Hahn polynomials also arise in wavefunctions of $q$-deformed quantum Calogero--Gaudin superintegrable systems.
Sparse interpolation} refers to the exact recovery of a function as a short linear combination of basis functions from a limited number of evaluations. For multivariate functions, the case of the monomial basis is well studied, as is now the basis of exponential functions. Beyond the multivariate Chebyshev polynomial obtained as tensor products of univariate Chebyshev polynomials, the theory of root systems allows to define a variety of generalized multivariate Chebyshev polynomials that have connections to topics such as Fourier analysis and representations of Lie algebras. We present a deter…
The multivariate quantum $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of "$q$-rotations" acting on the state vectors of many $q$-oscillators. The focus is put on the two-variable case. The algebraic interpretation is used to derive the main properties of the polynomials: orthogonality, duality, structure relations, difference equations and recurrence relations. The extension to an arbitrary number of variables is presented
The discrete cosine transforms of types V--VIII are generalized to the antisymmetric and symmetric multivariate discrete cosine transforms. Four families of discretely and continuously orthogonal Chebyshev-like polynomials corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric generalizations of cosine functions are introduced. Each family forms an orthogonal basis of the space of all polynomials with respect to some weighted integral. Cubature formulas, which correspond to these families of polynomials and which stem from the developed discrete cosine transforms, are derived. Examples of three-dime…
We provide a multidimensional weighted Euler--MacLaurin summation formula on polytopes and a multidimensional generalization of a result due to L. J. Mordell on the series expansion in Bernoulli polynomials. These results are consequences of a more general series expansion; namely, if $χ_{τ\mathcal{P}}$ denotes the characteristic function of a dilated integer convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ and $q$ is a function with suitable regularity, we prove that the periodization of $qχ_{τ\mathcal{P}}$ admits an expansion in terms of multivariate Bernoulli polynomials. These multivariate polynomials are re…
Multivariate orthogonal polynomials in $D$ real dimensions are considered from the perspective of the Cholesky factorization of a moment matrix. The approach allows for the construction of corresponding multivariate orthogonal polynomials, associated second kind functions, Jacobi type matrices and associated three term relations and also Christoffel-Darboux formulæ. The multivariate orthogonal polynomials, its second kind functions and the corresponding Christoffel-Darboux kernels are shown to be quasi-determinants --as well as Schur complements-- of bordered truncations of the moment matrix; …
The Gasper and Rahman multivariate $(-q)$-Racah polynomials appear as connection coefficients between bases diagonalizing different abelian subalgebras of the recently defined higher rank $q$-Bannai-Ito algebra $\mathcal{A}_n^q$. Lifting the action of the algebra to the connection coefficients, we find a realization of $\mathcal{A}_n^q$ by means of difference operators. This provides an algebraic interpretation for the bispectrality of the multivariate $(-q)$-Racah polynomials, as was established in [Iliev, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363 (3) (2011), 1577-1598]. Furthermore, we extend the Bannai-I…
Linear spectral transformations of orthogonal polynomials in the real line, and in particular Geronimus transformations, are extended to orthogonal polynomials depending on several real variables. Multivariate Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulae for the perturbed orthogonal polynomials and their quasi-tau matrices are found for each perturbation of the original linear functional. These expressions are given in terms of quasi-determinants of bordered truncated block matrices and the 1D Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulae in terms of quotient of determinants of combinations of the original o…
Darboux transformations for polynomial perturbations of a real multivariate measure are found. The 1D Christoffel formula is extended to the multidimensional realm: multivariate orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of last quasi-determinants and sample matrices. The coefficients of these matrices are the original orthogonal polynomials evaluated at a set of nodes, which is supposed to be poised. A discussion for the existence of poised sets is given in terms of algebraic hypersufaces in the complex affine space.
