We use Turan type inequalities to give new non-asymptotic bounds on the extreme zeros of orthogonal polynomials in terms of the coefficients of their three term recurrence. Most of our results deal with symmetric polynomials satisfying the three term recurrence $p_{k+1}=x p_k-c_k p_{k-1},$ with a nondecreasing sequence $\{c_k\}$. As a special case they include a non-asymptotic version of Mate, Nevai and Totik result on the largest zeros of orthogonal polynomials with $c_k=k^δ (1+ o(k^{-2/3})).$
We establish some new Turán's type inequalities for orthogonal polynomials defined by a three-term recurrence with monotonic coefficients. As a corollary we deduce asymptotic bounds on the extreme zeros of orthogonal polynomials with polynomially growing coefficients of the three-term recurrence.
The polynomials $p_n$ orthogonal on the interval $[-1,1],$ normalized by $p_n(1)=1,$ satisfy Turán's inequality if $p_n^2(x)-p_{n-1}(x)p_{n+1}(x)\ge 0$ for $n\ge 1$ and for all $x$ in the interval of orthogonality. We give a general criterion for orthogonal polynomials to satisfy Turán's inequality. This extends essentially the results of \cite{szw}. In particular the results can be applied to many classes of orthogonal polynomials, by inspecting their recurrence relation.
The orthogonal polynomials $p_n$ satisfy Turán's inequality if $p_n^2(x)-p_{n-1}(x)p_{n+1}(x)\ge 0$ for $n\ge 1$ and for all $x$ in the interval of orthogonality. We give general criteria for orthogonal polynomials to satisfy Turán's inequality. This yields the known results for classical orthogonal polynomials as well as new results, for example, for the $q$--ultraspherical polynomials.
The paper studies logarithmic convexity and concavity of the generalized hypergeometric function with respect to simultaneous shift of several parameters. We use integral representations and properties of Meijer's $G$ function to prove log-convexity. When all parameters are shifted we use series manipulations to examine the power series coefficients of the generalized Turánian formed by the generalized hypergeometric function. In cases when all zeros of the generalized hypergeometric function are real, we further explore the consequences of the extended Laguerre inequalities and formulate a co…
Let $g$ and $h$ be real-valued arithmetic functions, positive and normalized. Specific choices within the following general scheme of recursively defined polynomials \begin{equation*} P_n^{g,h}(x):= \frac{x}{h(n)} \sum_{k=1}^{n} g(k) \, P_{n-k}^{g,h}(x), \end{equation*} with initial value $P_{0}^{g,h}(x)=1$ encode information about several classical, widely studied polynomials. This includes Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, associated Laguerre polynomials, and the Nekrasov--Okounkov polynomials. In this paper we prove that for $g(n)=n$ and fixed $h$ we obtain orthogonal polynomial seq…
We show how Turan's inequality $P_n(x)^2-P_{n-1}(x)P_{n+1}(x)\geq 0$ for Legendre polynomials and related inequalities can be proven by means of a computer procedure. The use of this procedure simplifies the daily work with inequalities. For instance, we have found the stronger inequality $|x|P_n(x)^2-P_{n-1}(x)P_{n+1}(x)\geq 0$, $-1\leq x\leq 1$, effortlessly with the aid of our method.
In 1935, P. Turán proved that $$ S_{n,a}(x)= \sum_{j=1}^n{n+a-j\choose n-j} \sin(jx)>0 \quad{(n,a\in\mathbf{N}; 0<x<π).} $$ We present various related inequalities. Among others, we show that the refinements $$ S_{2n-1,a}(x)\geq \sin(x) \quad\mbox{and} \quad{S_{2n,a}(x)\geq 2\sin(x)(1+\cos(x))} $$ are valid for all integers $n\geq 1$ and real numbers $a\geq 1$ and $x\in(0,π)$. Moreover, we apply our theorems on sine sums to obtain inequalities for the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.
For a convex domain K in the complex plane C, the well-known general Markov inequality asserting that a polynomial p of degree n ||p'|| < c(K) n^2 ||p|| holds. On the other hand for polynomials in general, ||p'|| can be arbitrarily small as compared to ||p||. The situation changes when we assume that the polynomials have all their zeroes in the convex body K. This problem of lower bound for Markov factors was first investigated by Turán in 1939. Turán showed ||p'|| \ge n/2 ||p|| for the unit disk D and ||p'|| > c \sqrt{n} ||p|| for the unit interval I:=[-1,1]. Soon after that, J. Er\H od publi…
Let ${\cal P}_n^c$ denote the set of all algebraic polynomials of degree at most $n$ with complex coefficients. Let $$D^+ := \{z \in \mathbb{C}: |z| \leq 1, \, \, \Im(z) \geq 0\}$$ be the closed upper half-disk of the complex plane. For integers $0 \leq k \leq n$ let ${\mathcal F}_{n,k}^c$ be the set of all polynomials $P \in {\mathcal P}_n^c$ having at least $n-k$ zeros in $D^+$. Let $$\|f\|_A := \sup_{z \in A}{|f(z)|}$$ for complex-valued functions defined on $A \subset {\Bbb C}$. We prove that there are absolute constants $c_1 > 0$ and $c_2 > 0$ such that $$c_1 \left(\frac{n}{k+1}\right)^{1…
For a convex domain $K$ in the complex plane, the well-known general Bernstein-Markov inequality holds asserting that a polynomial $p$ of degree $n$ must have $||p'|| < c(K) n^2 ||p||$. On the other hand for polynomials in general, $||p'||$ can be arbitrarily small as compared to $||p||$. The situation changes when we assume that the polynomials in question have all their zeroes in the convex body $K$. This was first investigated by Turán, who showed the lower bounds $||p'|| \ge (n/2) ||p||$ for the unit disk $D$ and $||p'|| > c \sqrt{n} ||p||$ for the unit interval $I:=[-1,1]$. Although parti…
For rational functions, we use simple but elegant techniques to strengthen generalizations of certain results which extend some widely known polynomial inequalities of Erdös-Lax and Turán to rational functions R. In return these reinforced results, in the limiting case, lead to the corresponding refinements of the said polynomial inequalities. As an illustration and as an application of our results, we obtain some new improvements of the Erdós-Lax and Turán type inequalities for polynomials. These improved results take into account the size of the constant term and the leading coefficient of t…

Some new counterparts of Bessel's inequality for orthornormal families in real or complex inner product spaces are pointed out. Applications for some Gruss type inequalities are also empahsized.
We study solutions of three-term recurrence relations whose $N$-step transfer matrices belong to the uniform Stolz class. In particular, we derive the first order of their uniform asymptotics. For orthonormal polynomials we show more. Namely, we find the constructive formula for the density of their orthogonality measure in terms of Turán determinants and we determine their exact asymptotic behavior. We treat both bounded and unbounded cases in a uniform manner.
For any two real-valued continuous-path martingales $X=\{X_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ and $Y=\{Y_t\}_{t\geq 0}$, with $X$ and $Y$ being orthogonal and $Y$ being differentially subordinate to $X$, we obtain sharp $L^p$ inequalities for martingales of the form $aX+bY$ with $a, b$ real numbers. The best $L^p$ constant is equal to the norm of the operator $aI+bH$ from $L^p$ to $L^p$, where $H$ is the Hilbert transform on the circle or real line. The values of these norms were found by Hollenbeck, Kalton and Verbitsky \cite{HKV}.
Turán type inequalities for modified Bessel functions of the first kind are used to deduce some sharp lower and upper bounds for the asymptotic order parameter of the stochastic Kuramoto model. Moreover, approximation from the Lagrange inversion theorem and a rational approximation are given for the asymptotic order parameter.
Let $x_1$ and $x_k$ be the least and the largest zeros of the Laguerre or Jacobi polynomial of degree $k.$ We shall establish sharp inequalities of the form $x_1 <A, x_k >B,$ which are uniform in all the parameters involved. Together with inequalities in the opposite direction, recently obtained by the author, this locates the extreme zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials with the relative precision, roughly speaking, $O(k^{-2/3}).$
It is shown that $\sum_{j=-m}^m (-1)^j \frac{f(x-j)(f(x+j)}{(m-j)! (m+j)!} \ge 0,$ $m=0,1,...,$ where $f(x)$ is either a real polynomial with only real zeros or an allied entire function of a special type, provided the distance between two consecutive zeros of $f(x)$ is at least $\sqrt{4-\frac{6}{m+2}}.$ These inequalities are a surprisingly similar discrete analogue of higher degree generalizations of the Laguerre and Turan inequalities. Being applied to the classical discrete orthogonal polynomials, they yield sharp, explicit bounds uniform in all parameters involved, on the polynomials and …
We consider determinants of Wronskian type whose entries are multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a path connecting two multi-indices. By assuming that the weight functions form an algebraic Chebyshev (AT) system, we show that the polynomials represented by the Wronskians keep a constant sign in some cases, while in some other cases oscillatory behavior appears, which generalizes classical results for orthogonal polynomials due to Karlin and Szegő. There are two applications of our results. The first application arises from the observation that the $m$-th moment of the average chara…
We study orthogonal polynomials with periodically modulated Jacobi parameters in the case when $0$ lies on the soft edge of the spectrum of the corresponding periodic Jacobi matrix. We determine when the orthogonality measure is absolutely continuous and we provide a constructive formula for it in terms of the limit of Turán determinants. We next consider asymptotics of the solutions of associated second order difference equation. Finally, we study scaling limits of the Christoffel--Darboux kernel.
For a bilinear form obtained by adding a Dirac mass to a positive definite moment functional in several variables, explicit formulas of orthogonal polynomials are derived from the orthogonal polynomials associated with the moment functional. Explicit formula for the reproducing kernel is also derived and used to establish certain inequalities for classical orthogonal polynomials.
Fourier series in orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure $ν$ on $[-1,1]$ are studied when $ν$ is a linear combination of a generalized Jacobi weight and finitely many Dirac deltas in $[-1,1]$. We prove some weighted norm inequalities for the partial sum operators $S_n$, their maximal operator $S^*$ and the commutator $[M_b, S_n]$, where $M_b$ denotes the operator of pointwise multiplication by $b \in \BMO$. We also prove some norm inequalities for $S_n$ when $ν$ is a sum of a Laguerre weight on $\R^+$ and a positive mass on $0$.
