We show that the random point measures induced by vertices in the convex hull of a Poisson sample on the unit ball, when properly scaled and centered, converge to those of a mean zero Gaussian field. We establish limiting variance and covariance asymptotics in terms of the density of the Poisson sample. Similar results hold for the point measures induced by the maximal points in a Poisson sample. The approach involves introducing a generalized spatial birth growth process allowing for cell overlap.
Schreiber and Yukich [Ann. Probab. 36 (2008) 363-396] establish an asymptotic representation for random convex polytope geometry in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^d, d\geq2$, in terms of the general theory of stabilizing functionals of Poisson point processes as well as in terms of generalized paraboloid growth processes. This paper further exploits this connection, introducing also a dual object termed the paraboloid hull process. Via these growth processes we establish local functional limit theorems for the properly scaled radius-vector and support functions of convex polytopes generated by high…
For the perimeter length and the area of the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, we study $n \to \infty$ mean and variance asymptotics and establish non-Gaussian distributional limits. Our results apply to random walks with drift (for the area) and walks with no drift (for both area and perimeter length) under mild moments assumptions on the increments. These results complement and contrast with previous work which showed that the perimeter length in the case with drift satisfies a central limit theorem. We deduce these results from weak convergence statements for the c…
Let $K \subset \R^d$ be a smooth convex set and let $¶_\la$ be a Poisson point process on $\R^d$ of intensity $\la$. The convex hull of $¶_\la \cap K$ is a random convex polytope $K_\la$. As $\la \to \infty$, we show that the variance of the number of $k$-dimensional faces of $K_\la$, when properly scaled, converges to a scalar multiple of the affine surface area of $K$. Similar asymptotics hold for the variance of the number of $k$-dimensional faces for the convex hull of a binomial process in $K$.
For the perimeter length $L_n$ and the area $A_n$ of the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, this thesis study $n \to \infty$ mean and variance asymptotics and establish distributional limits. The results apply to random walks both with drift (the mean of random walk increments) and with no drift under mild moments assumptions on the increments. Assuming increments of the random walk have finite second moment and non-zero mean, Snyder and Steele showed that $n^{-1} L_n$ converges almost surely to a deterministic limit, and proved an upper bound on the variance Var$[ L_n…
The convex hull peeling of a point set is obtained by taking the convex hull of the set and repeating iteratively the operation on the interior points until no point remains. The boundary of each hull is called a layer. We study the number of k-dimensional faces and the outer defect intrinsic volumes of the first layers of the convex hull peeling of a homogeneous Poisson point process in the unit ball whose intensity goes to infinity. More precisely we provide asymptotic limits for their expectation and variance as well as a central limit theorem. In particular, the growth rates do not depend …
In Cabo and Groeneboom (1994) the remaining area of the left-lower convex hull of a Poisson point process with intensity one in the first quadrant of the plane was analyzed, using the methods of Groeneboom (1988), giving formulas for the expectation and variance of the remaining area for a finite interval of slopes of the boundary of the convex hull. However, the time inversion argument of Groeneboom (1988) was not correctly applied in Cabo and Groeneboom (1994), leading to an incorrect scaling constant for the variance. The purpose of this note is to show how the correct application of the ti…
We study the convex hull of the first $n$ steps of a planar random walk, and present large-$n$ asymptotic results on its perimeter length $L_n$, diameter $D_n$, and shape. In the case where the walk has a non-zero mean drift, we show that $L_n / D_n \to 2$ a.s., and give distributional limit theorems and variance asymptotics for $D_n$, and in the zero-drift case we show that the convex hull is infinitely often arbitrarily well-approximated in shape by any unit-diameter compact convex set containing the origin, and then $\liminf_{n \to \infty} L_n/D_n =2$ and $\limsup_{n \to \infty} L_n /D_n = …
Denote by $L_n$ the length of the perimeter of the convex hull of $n$ steps of a planar random walk whose increments have finite second moment and non-zero mean. Snyder and Steele showed that $n^{-1} L_n$ converges almost surely to a deterministic limit, and proved an upper bound on the variance $Var [ L_n] = O(n)$. We show that $n^{-1} Var [L_n]$ converges and give a simple expression for the limit, which is non-zero for walks outside a certain degenerate class. This answers a question of Snyder and Steele. Furthermore, we prove a central limit theorem for $L_n$ in the non-degenerate case.

We consider the convex hull of the perturbed point process comprised of $n$ i.i.d. points, each distributed as the sum of a uniform point on the unit sphere $§^{d-1}$ and a uniform point in the $d$-dimensional ball centered at the origin and of radius $n^α, α\in (-\infty, \infty)$. This model, inspired by the smoothed complexity analysis introduced in computational geometry \cite{DGGT,ST}, is a perturbation of the classical random polytope. We show that the perturbed point process, after rescaling, converges in the scaling limit to one of five Poisson point processes according to whether $α$ b…
In Groeneboom (1988) a central limit theorem for the number of vertices of the convex hull of a uniform sample from the interior of convex polygon was derived. In the unpublished preprint Nagaev and Khamdamov (1991) (in Russian) a central limit result for the joint distribution of the number of vertices and the remaining area is given, using a coupling of the sample process near the border of the polygon with a Poisson point process as in Groeneboom (1988), and representing the remaining area in the Poisson approximation as a union of a doubly infinite sequence of independent standard exponent…
Let $K_n$ be the convex hull of i.i.d. random variables distributed according to the standard normal distribution on $\R^d$. We establish variance asymptotics as $n \to \infty$ for the re-scaled intrinsic volumes and $k$-face functionals of $K_n$, $k \in \{0,1,...,d-1\}$, resolving an open problem. Variance asymptotics are given in terms of functionals of germ-grain models having parabolic grains with apices at a Poisson point process on $\R^{d-1} \times \R$ with intensity $e^h dh dv$. The scaling limit of the boundary of $K_n$ as $n \to \infty$ converges to a festoon of parabolic surfaces, co…
Let K be a convex set in R d and let K $λ$ be the convex hull of a homogeneous Poisson point process P $λ$ of intensity $λ$ on K. When K is a simple polytope, we establish scaling limits as $λ$ $\rightarrow$ $\infty$ for the boundary of K $λ$ in a vicinity of a vertex of K and we give variance asymptotics for the volume and k-face functional of K $λ$, k $\in$ {0, 1, ..., d -- 1}, resolving an open question posed in [18]. The scaling limit of the boundary of K $λ$ and the variance asymptotics are described in terms of a germ-grain model consisting of cone-like grains pinned to the extreme point…
Brown-Resnick processes are max-stable processes that are associated to Gaussian processes. Their simulation is often based on the corresponding spectral representation which is not unique. We study to what extent simulation accuracy and efficiency can be improved by minimizing the maximal variance of the underlying Gaussian process. Such a minimization is a difficult mathematical problem that also depends on the geometry of the simulation domain. We extend Matheron's (1974) seminal contribution in two aspects: (i) making his description of a minimal maximal variance explicit for convex variog…
Fix a container polygon $P$ in the plane and consider the convex hull $P_n$ of $n\geq 3$ independent and uniformly distributed in $P$ random points. In the focus of this paper is the vertex number of the random polygon $P_n$. The precise variance expansion for the vertex number is determined up to the constant-order term, a result which can be considered as a second-order analogue of the classical expansion for the expectation of Rényi and Sulanke (1963). Moreover, a sharp Berry-Esseen bound is derived for the vertex number of the random polygon $P_n$, which is of the same order as the square-…
We study essentially bounded quantum random variables and show that the Gelfand spectrum of such a quantum random variable coincides with the hypoconvex hull of its essential range. Moreover, a notion of operator-valued variance is introduced, leading to a formulation of the moment problem in the context of quantum probability spaces in terms of operator-theoretic properties involving semi-invariant subspaces and spectral theory. As an application of quantum variance, new measures of random and inherent quantum noise are introduced for measurements of quantum systems, modifying some recent ide…
We study maximal clades in random phylogenetic trees with the Yule-Harding model or, equivalently, in binary search trees. We use probabilistic methods to reprove and extend earlier results on moment asymptotics and asymptotic normality. In particular, we give an explanation of the curious phenomenon observed by Drmota, Fuchs and Lee (2014) that asymptotic normality holds, but one should normalize using half the variance.
We study the variance of the number of zeroes of a stationary Gaussian process on a long interval. We give a simple asymptotic description under mild mixing conditions. This allows us to characterise minimal and maximal growth. We show that a small (symmetrised) atom in the spectral measure at a special frequency does not affect the asymptotic growth of the variance, while an atom at any other frequency results in maximal growth. Our results allow us to analyse a large number of interesting examples.
We consider a branching random walk initiated by a single particle at location 0 in which particles alternately reproduce according to the law of a Galton-Watson process and disperse according to the law of a driftless random walk on the integers. When the offspring distribution has mean 1 the branching process is critical, and therefore dies out with probability 1. We prove that if the particle jump distribution has mean zero, positive finite variance $η^{2}$, and finite $4+\varepsilon$ moment, and if the offspring distribution has positive variance $σ^{2}$ and finite third moment then the di…
Consider the random polytope, that is given by the convex hull of a Poisson point process on a smooth convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove central limit theorems for continuous motion invariant valuations including the Will's functional and the intrinsic volumes of this random polytope. Additionally we derive a central limit theorem for the oracle estimator, that is an unbiased an minimal variance estimator for the volume of a convex set. Finally we obtain a multivariate limit theorem for the intrinsic volumes and the components of the $\mathbf{f}$-vector of the random polytope.
We consider a one-dimensional totally asymmetric nearest-neighbor zero-range process with site-dependent jump-rates - an environment. For each environment p we prove that the set of all invariant measures is the convex hull of a set of product measures with geometric marginals. As a consequence we show that for environments p satisfying certain asymptotic property, there are no invariant measures concentrating on configurations with critical density bigger than $ρ^*(p)$, a critical value. If $ρ^*(p)$ is finite we say that there is phase-transition on the density. In this case we prove that if …
The random polytope $K_n$, defined as the convex hull of $n$ points chosen uniformly at random on the boundary of a smooth convex body, is considered. Proofs for lower and upper variance bounds, strong laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$ are presented. A normal approximation bound from Stein's method and estimates for surface bodies are among the involved tools.
Stationary and isotropic iteration stable random tessellations are considered, which can be constructed by a random process of cell division. The collection of maximal polytopes at a fixed time $t$ within a convex window $W\subset{\Bbb R}^d$ is regarded and formulas for mean values, variances, as well as a characterization of certain covariance measures are proved. The focus is on the case $d\geq 3$, which is different from the planar one, treated separately in \cite{ST2}. Moreover, a multivariate limit theorem for the vector of suitably rescaled intrinsic volumes is established, leading in ea…
A Poisson point process of unit intensity is placed in the square $[0,n]^2$. An increasing path is a curve connecting $(0,0)$ with $(n,n)$ which is non-decreasing in each coordinate. Its length is the number of points of the Poisson process which it passes through. Baik, Deift and Johansson proved that the maximal length of an increasing path has expectation $2n-n^{1/3}(c_1+o(1))$, variance $n^{2/3}(c_2+o(1))$ and that it converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution after suitable scaling. Johansson further showed that all maximal paths have a displacement of $n^{\frac23+o(1)}$ from the diagonal …
We study the maximal displacement of branching random walks in a class of time inhomogeneous environments. Specifically, binary branching random walks with Gaussian increments will be considered, where the variances of the increments change over time macroscopically. We find the asymptotics of the maximum up to an $O_P(1)$ (stochastically bounded) error, and focus on the following phenomena: the profile of the variance matters, both to the leading (velocity) term and to the logarithmic correction term, and the latter exhibits a phase transition.
In this paper we study the functional central limit theorem for stationary Markov chains with self-adjoint operator and general state space. We investigate the case when the variance of the partial sum is not asymptotically linear in n; and establish that conditional convergence in distribution of partial sums implies functional CLT. The main tools are maximal inequalities that are further exploited to derive conditions for tightness and convergence to the Brownian motion.
Let $K$ be a $d$ dimensional convex body with a twice continuously differentiable boundary and everywhere positive Gauss-Kronecker curvature. Denote by $K_n$ the convex hull of $n$ points chosen randomly and independently from $K$ according to the uniform distribution. Matching lower and upper bounds are obtained for the orders of magnitude of the variances of the $s$-th intrinsic volumes $V_s(K_n)$ of $K_n$ for $s\in\{1, ..., d\}$. Furthermore, strong laws of large numbers are proved for the intrinsic volumes of $K_n$. The essential tools are the Economic Cap Covering Theorem of Bárány and La…
Maximum likelihood estimation is a common method of estimating the parameters of the probability distribution from a given sample. This paper aims to introduce the maximum likelihood estimation in the framework of sublinear expectation. We find the maximum likelihood estimator for the parameters of the maximal distribution via the solution of the associated minimax problem, which coincides with the optimal unbiased estimation given by Jin and Peng \cite{JP21}. A general estimation method for samples with dependent structure is also provided. This result provides a theoretical foundation for th…
In this paper we characterize the limiting behavior of sums of extreme values of long range dependent sequences defined as functionals of linear processes with finite variance. The extremal sums behave completely different by compared to the i.i.d case. In particular, though we still have asymptotic normality, the scaling factor is relatively bigger than in the i.i.d case, meaning that the maximal terms have relatively smaller contribution to the whole sum. Also, the scaling need not depend on the tail index of the underlying marginal distribution, as it is well-known to be so in the i.i.d. si…
