This paper addresses the problem of computing the eigenvalues lying in the gaps of the essential spectrum of a periodic Schrodinger operator perturbed by a fast decreasing potential. We use a recently developed technique, the so called quadratic projection method, in order to achieve convergence free from spectral pollution. We describe the theoretical foundations of the method in detail, and illustrate its effectiveness by several examples.
We show that the spectral measure of discrete Schrödinger operators $ (Hu)(n)= u({n+1})+u({n-1})+V(n)u(n)$ does not have singular continuous component if the potential $V(n)=O(n^{-1})$.
We study the inverse scattering for Schr{ö}dinger operators on locally perturbed periodic lattices. We show that the associated scattering matrix is equivalent to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a boundary value problem on a finite part of the graph, and reconstruct scalar potentials as well as the graph structure from the knowledge of the S-matrix. In particular, we give a procedure for probing defects in hexagonal lattices (graphene).
We find the high energy asymptotics for the singular Weyl--Titchmarsh m-functions and the associated spectral measures of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators (also known as Bessel operators). We apply this result to establish an improved local Borg-Marchenko theorem for Bessel operators as well as uniqueness theorems for the radial quantum scattering problem with nontrivial angular momentum.
We consider Schrödinger operators of the form $H_R = - d^2/ d x^2 + q + i γχ_{[0,R]}$ for large $R>0$, where $q \in L^1(0,\infty)$ and $γ> 0$. Bounds for the maximum magnitude of an eigenvalue and for the number of eigenvalues are proved. These bounds complement existing general bounds applied to this system, for sufficiently large $R$.
We derive explicit inequalities for sums of eigenvalues of one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the whole line. In the case of the perturbed harmonic oscillator, these bounds converge to the corresponding trace formula in the limit as the number of eigenvalues covers the whole spectrum.
In numerical existence proofs for solutions of the semi-linear elliptic system, evaluating the norm of the inverse of a perturbed Laplace operator plays an important role. We reveal an eigenvalue problem to design a method for verifying the invertibility of the operator and evaluating the norm of its inverse based on Liu's method and the Temple-Lehman-Goerisch method. We apply the inverse-norm's estimation to the Dirichlet boundary value problem of the Lotka-Volterra system with diffusion terms and confirm the efficacy of our method.
We prove an upper bound on the sum of the distances between the eigenvalues of a perturbed Schrödinger operator $H_0-V$ and the lowest eigenvalue of $H_0$. Our results hold for operators $H_0=-Δ-V_0$ in one dimension with single-well potentials. We rely on a variation of the well-known commutation method. In the Pöschl-Teller and Coulomb cases we are able to use the explicit factorisations to establish improved bounds.
This paper is devoted to a dispersion analysis of a class of perturbed p-Laplacians. Besides the p-Laplacian-like eigenvalue problems we also deal with new and non-standard eigenvalue problems, which can not be solved by the methods used in nonlinear eigenvalue problems for p-Laplacians and similar operators. Original techniques are suggested for solving these new problems (see Section 3). In addition, dispersion relations between the eigen-parameters, quantitative analysis of eigenvectors and variational principles for eigenvalues of perturbed p-Laplacians are also studied in this paper. The …
The problem of absence of eigenvalues imbedded into the continuous spectrum is considered for a Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential perturbed by a sufficiently fast decaying ``impurity'' potential. Results of this type have previously been known for the one-dimensional case only. Absence of embedded eigenvalues is shown in dimensions two and three if the corresponding Fermi surface is irreducible modulo natural symmetries. It is conjectured that all periodic potentials satisfy this condition. Separable periodic potentials satisfy it, and hence in dimensions two and three Schrödinger…
We study the persistence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of perturbed eigenvalue problems in Hilbert spaces. We assume that the unperturbed problem has a nontrivial kernel of odd dimension and we prove a Rabinowitz-type global continuation result. The approach is topological, based on a notion of degree for oriented Fredholm maps of index zero between real differentiable Banach manifolds.
This paper is devoted to multi-parameter eigenvalue problems for perturbed $p$-Laplacians, modelling travelling waves for a class of non-linear evolution PDE. Dispersion relations between the eigen-para-meters, the existence of eigenvectors and positive eigenvectors, variational principles for eigenvalues of perturbed $p$-Laplacians and constructing analytical solutions are the main subject of this paper. Besides the $p$-Laplacian-like eigenvalue problems we also deal with new and non-standard eigenvalue problems, which can not be solved by the methods used in nonlinear eigenvalue problems for…
In this paper we investigate the spectral and the scattering theory of Schrödinger operators acting on perturbed periodic discrete graphs. The perturbations considered are of two types: either a multiplication operator by a short-range or a long-range function, or a short-range type modification of the measure defined on the vertices and on the edges of the graph. Mourre theory is used for describing the nature of the spectrum of the underlying operators. For short-range perturbations, existence and completeness of local wave operators are also proved.
We study Dirichlet Laplacian in a screw-shaped region, i.e. a straight twisted tube of a non-circular cross section. It is shown that a local perturbation which consists of "slowing down" the twisting in the mean gives rise to a non-empty discrete spectrum.
We derive new estimates for the number of discrete eigenvalues of compactly perturbed operators on Banach spaces, assuming that the perturbing operator is an element of a weak entropy number ideal. Our results improve upon earlier results by the author and by Demuth et al. The main tool in our proofs is an inequality of Carl. In particular, in contrast to all previous results we do not rely on tools from complex analysis.
We consider the Landau Hamiltonian (i.e. the 2D Schroedinger operator with constant magnetic field) perturbed by an electric potential V which decays sufficiently fast at infinity. The spectrum of the perturbed Hamiltonian consists of clusters of eigenvalues which accumulate to the Landau levels. Applying a suitable version of the anti-Wick quantization, we investigate the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues within a given cluster as the number of the cluster tends to infinity. We obtain an explicit description of the asymptotic density of the eigenvalues in terms of the Radon transform…
In this paper, we consider the perturbed Stark operator \begin{equation*} Hu=H_0u+qu=-u^{\prime\prime}-xu+qu, \end{equation*} where $q$ is the power-decaying perturbation. The criteria for $q$ such that $H=H_0+q$ has at most one eigenvalue (finitely many, infinitely many eigenvalues) are obtained. All the results are quantitative and are generalized to the perturbed Stark type operator.
In the first part of this paper we provide a self-contained introduction to (regularized) perturbation determinants for operators in Banach spaces. In the second part, we use these determinants to derive new bounds on the discrete eigenvalues of compactly perturbed operators, broadly extending some recent results by Demuth et al. In addition, we also establish new bounds on the discrete eigenvalues of generators of $C_0$-semigroups.
We investigate the eigenvalues of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators under the assumption that the perturbation $q(x)$ satisfies $x q(x) \in L^1(0,1)$. We show that the square roots of eigenvalues are given by the square roots of the unperturbed eigenvalues up to an decaying error depending on the behavior of $q(x)$ near $x=0$. Furthermore, we provide sets of spectral data which uniquely determine $q(x)$.
A two-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a constant magnetic field perturbed by a smooth compactly supported potential is considered. The spectrum of this operator consists of eigenvalues which accumulate to the Landau levels. We call the set of eigenvalues near the $n$'th Landau level an $n$'th eigenvalue cluster, and study the distribution of eigenvalues in the $n$'th cluster as $n\to\infty$. A complete asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalue moments in the $n$'th cluster is obtained and some coefficients of this expansion are computed. A trace formula involving the first eigenvalue momen…
We consider a non-compact Riemannian periodic manifold such that the corresponding Laplacian has a spectral gap. By continuously perturbing the periodic metric locally we can prove the existence of eigenvalues in a gap. A lower bound on the number of eigenvalue branches crossing a fixed level is established in terms of a discrete eigenvalue problem. Furthermore, we discuss examples of perturbations leading to infinitely many eigenvalue branches coming from above resp. finitely many branches coming from below.
Estimates for the total multiplicity of eigenvalues for Schrödinger operator are established in the case of compactly supported or exponentially decreasing complex-valued potential.
A perturbation decaying to 0 at infinity and not too irregular at 0 introduces at most a discrete set of eigenvalues into the spectral gaps of a one-dimensional Dirac operator on the half-line. We show that the number of these eigenvalues in a compact subset of a gap in the essential spectrum is given by a quasi-semiclassical asymptotic formula in the slow-decay limit, which for power-decaying perturbations is equivalent to the large-coupling limit. This asymptotic behaviour elucidates the origin of the dense point spectrum observed in spherically symmetric, radially periodic three-dimensional…
We derive inequalities for sums of eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators on finite intervals and tori. In the first of these cases, the inequalities converge to the classical trace formulae in the limit as the number of eigenvalues considered approaches infinity.
In this paper, we introduce a new family of functions to construct Schrödinger operators with embedded eigenvalues. This particularly allows us to construct discrete Schrödinger operators with arbitrary prescribed sets of eigenvalues.
New estimates for eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint multi-dimensional Schrödinger operators are obtained in terms of $L_{p}$-norms of the potentials. The results extend and improve those obtained previously. In particular, diverse versions of an assertion conjectured by Laptev and Safronov are discussed. Schrödinger operators with slowly decaying potentials are also considered.
We extend a result of Davies and Nath on the location of eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators with slowly decaying complex-valued potentials to higher dimensions. In this context, we also discuss various examples related to the Laptev--Safronov conjecture.
In this article we consider a closed Riemannian manifold (M,g) and A a subset of M. The purpose of this article is the comparison between the eigenvalues of a Schrodinger operator on the manifold (M,g) and the eigenvalues on the manifold (M-A,g) with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
The paper presents estimates for the number of negative eigenvalues of a two-dimensional Schrödinger operator in terms of $L\log L$ type Orlicz norms of the potential and proves a conjecture by N.N. Khuri, A. Martin and T.T. Wu.
In this paper, we consider the perturbations of the Harmonic Oscillator Operator by an odd pair of point interactions: $z (δ(x - b) - δ(x + b))$. We study the spectrum by analyzing a convenient formula for the eigenvalue. We conclude that if $z = ir$, $r$ real, as $r \to \infty$, the number of non-real eigenvalues tends to infinity.
Let $H_0$ be a periodic operator on $\R^+$(or periodic Jacobi operator on $\N$). It is known that the absolutely continuous spectrum of $H_0$ is consisted of spectral bands $\cup[α_l,β_l]$. Under the assumption that $\limsup_{x\to \infty} x|V(x)|<\infty$ ($\limsup_{n\to \infty} n|V(n)|<\infty$), the asymptotical behaviour of embedded eigenvalues approaching to the spectral boundary is established.
We consider quite general $h$-pseudodifferential operators on $R^n$ with small random perturbations and show that in the limit of small $h$ the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Weyl law with a probabality that tends to 1. The first author has previously obtained a similar result in dimension 1. Our class of perturbations is different.
In this work we obtain the integrated density of states for the Schrödinger operators with decaying random potentials acting on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^d)$. We also study the asymptotic of the largest and smallest eigenvalues of its finite volume approximation
We use a classical result of Hildebrandt to establish simple conditions for the absence of eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint discrete and continuous Schrödinger operators on the boundary of their numerical range.
In this paper, we give Lieb-Thirring type inequalities for isolated eigenvalues of $d$-dimensional non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operators with complex-valued and dilation analytic potentials. In order to derive them, we prove that isolated eigenvalues and their multiplicities are invariant under complex dilation.
Several recent papers have focused their attention in proving the correct analogue to the Lieb-Thirring inequalities for non self-adjoint operators and in finding bounds on the distribution of their eigenvalues in the complex plane. This paper provides some improvement in the state of the art in this topic. Precisely, we address the question of finding quantitative bounds on the discrete spectrum of the perturbed Lamé operator of elasticity $-Δ^\ast + V$ in terms of $L^p$-norms of the potential. Original results within the self-adjoint framework are provided too.
We will discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of Schrödinger operator with a matrix potential defined by Neumann boundary condition in $L_2^m(F)$, where $F$ is $d$-dimensional rectangle and the potential is a $m \times m$ matrix with $m\geq 2$, $d\geq 2$ , when the eigenvalues belong to the resonance domain, roughly speaking they lie near planes of diffraction. \textbf{Keywords:} Schrödinger operator, Neumann condition, Resonance eigenvalue, Perturbation theory. \textbf{AMS Subject Classifications:} 47F05, 35P15
Estimates for eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators on the half-line with complex-valued potentials are established. Schrödinger operators with potentials belonging to weak Lebesque's classes are also considered. The results cover those known previously due to R. L. Frank, A. Laptev and R. Seiringer [In spectral theory and analysis, vol. 214, Oper. Theory Adv. Appl., pag. 39-44; Birkhäuser/Springer Basel.]
We prove general comparison theorems for eigenvalues of perturbed Schrodinger operators that allow proof of Lieb--Thirring bounds for suitable non-free Schrodinger operators and Jacobi matrices.
We study the distribution of the eigenvalues inside of the essential spectrum for discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with potentials of Coulomb type decay.
We study a variational problem for the first Schrodinger eigenvalue on closed Riemannian surfaces. More precisely, we explore concentration-compactness properties of sequences formed by its extremal potentials.
We study the distribution of eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator with a complex valued potential $V$. We prove that if $|V|$ decays faster than the Coulomb potential, then all eigenvalues are in a disc of a finite radius.
We are interested in diagonal perturbations of a periodic Jacobi operator that introduce embedded eigenvalues in its essential spectrum. Embedding multiple points in the essential spectrum has been known to be difficult, given that eigenvalues are destroyed easily by small perturbations. However, given a finite or countably infinite set of points within an absolutely continuous band of the original periodic operator (subject only to a very weak non-resonance condition) we are able to construct a diagonal perturbation that preserves the essential spectrum and places eigenvalues in all of those …
We study the eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators with complex potentials in odd space dimensions. We obtain bounds on the total number of eigenvalues in the case where $V$ decays exponentially at infinity.
We consider a Sturm-Liouville operator a with integrable potential $q$ on the unit interval $I=[0,1]$. We consider a Schrödinger operator with a real compactly supported potential on the half line and on the line, where this potential coincides with $q$ on the unit interval and vanishes outside $I$. We determine the relationships between eigenvalues of such operators and obtain estimates of eigenvalues in terms of potentials.
We study the spectrum of a system of second order differential operator perturbed by a non-selfadjoint matrix valued potential. We prove that eigenvalues of the perturbed operator are located near the edges of the spectrum of the unperturbed operator.
We revisit an archive submission by P. B. Denton, S. J. Parke, T. Tao, and X. Zhang, arXiv:1908.03795, on $n \times n$ self-adjoint matrices from the point of view of self-adjoint Dirichlet Schrödinger operators on a compact interval.
We consider Schrödinger operators in $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ whose potentials are given by the sum of an ergodic term and a random term of Anderson type. Under the assumption that the ergodic term is generated by a homeomorphism of a connected compact metric space and a continuous sampling function, we show that the almost sure spectrum arises in an explicitly described way from the unperturbed spectrum and the topological support of the single-site distribution. In particular, assuming that the latter is compact and contains at least two points, this explicit description of the almost sure spect…
Given a separable, locally compact Hausdorff space $X$ and a positive Radon measure $m(dx)$ on it, we study the problem of finding the potential $V(x) \ge 0$ that maximizes the first eigenvalue of the Schrödinger-type operator $L+V(x)$; $L$ is the generator of a local Dirichlet form $(a, D[a])$ on $L^2(X, m(dx))$.
We study perturbations of a self-adjoint positive operator $T$, provided that a perturbation operator $B$ satisfies "local" subordinate condition $\|Bφ_k\|\leqslant bμ_k^β$ with some $β<1$ and $b>0$. Here $\{φ_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$ is an orthonormal system of the eigenvectors of the operator $T$ corresponding to the eigenvalues $\{μ_k\}_{k=1}^\infty$. We introduce the concept of $α$-non-condensing sequence and prove the theorem on the comparison of the eigenvalue-counting functions of the operators $T$ and $T+B$. Namely, it is shown that if $\{μ_k\}$ is $α-$non-condensing then the difference of th…
We consider the problem of embedding eigenvalues into the essential spectrum of periodic Jacobi operators, using an oscillating, decreasing potential. To do this we employ a geometric method, previously used to embed eigenvalues into the essential spectrum of the discrete Schrödinger operator. For periodic Jacobi operators we relax the rational dependence conditions on the values of the quasi-momenta from this previous work. We then explore conditions that permit not just the existence of infinitely many subordinate solutions to the formal spectral equation but also the embedding of infinitely…
Diverging eigenvalues in domain truncations of Schrödinger operators with complex potentials are analyzed and their asymptotic formulas are obtained. Our approach also yields asymptotic formulas for diverging eigenvalues in the strong coupling regime for the imaginary part of the potential.
