Given a set of forms f={f_1,...,f_m} in R=k[x_1,...,x_n], where k is a field of characteristic zero, we focus on the first syzygy module Z of the transposed Jacobian module D(f), whose elements are called differential syzygies of f. There is a distinct submodule P of Z coming from the polynomial relations of f through its transposed Jacobian matrix, the elements of which are called polar syzygies of f. We say that f is polarizable if equality P=Z holds. This paper is concerned with the situation where f are monomials of degree 2, in which case one can naturally associate to them a graph G(f) with loops and translate the problem into a combinatorial one. A main result is a complete combinatorial characterization of polarizability in terms of special configurations in this graph. As a consequence, we show that polarizability implies normality of the subalgebra k[f] of R and that the converse holds provided the graph G(f) is free of certain degenerate configurations. One main combinatorial class of polarizability is the class of polymatroidal sets. We also prove that if the edge graph of G(f) has diameter at most 2 then f is polarizable. We establish a curious connection with birationality of rational maps defined by monomial quadrics.
When do syzygies depend on the characteristic of the field? Even for well-studied families of examples, very little is known. For a family of random monomial ideals, namely the Stanley--Reisner ideals of random flag complexes, we prove that the Betti numbers asymptotically almost always depend on the characteristic. Using this result, we also develop a heuristic for characteristic dependence of asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties.
Let $F$ be a finite set of monomials of the same degree $d\geq 2$ in a polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ over an arbitrary field $k$. We give some necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the birationality of the ring extension $k[F]\subset R^{(d)}$, where $R^{(d)}$ is the $d${\it th} Veronese subring of $R$. One of our results extends to arbitrary characteristic, in the case of rational monomial maps, a previous syzygy-theoretic birationality criterion in characteristic zero
We show that for every positive integer R there exist monomial ideals generated in degree two, with linear syzygies, and regularity of the quotient equal to R. Such examples can not be found among Gorenstein ideals since the regularity of their quotients is at most four. We also show that for most monomial ideals generated in degree two and with linear syzygies the regularity grows at most doubly logarithmically in the number of variables.
We give a quick new approach to the main cases of the nonvanishing theorems of first and third authors concerning the asymptotic behavior of the syzygies of a projective variety as the positivity of the embedding line bundle grows. Specifically, we present a surprisingly elementary and concrete proof of the asymptotic nonvanishing of Veronese syzygies, and we obtain effective results for arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay varieties. The idea is that one can reduce the statements to some simple computations with monomials.
For a graph G, we construct two algebras, whose dimensions are both equal to the number of spanning trees of G. One of these algebras is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain monomial ideal, while the other is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain powers of linear forms. We describe the set of monomials that forms a linear basis in each of these two algebras. The basis elements correspond to G-parking functions that naturally came up in the abelian sandpile model. These ideals are instances of the general class of monotone monomial ideals and their deformations. We sh…
We introduce the class of modules with initially linear syzygies, which includes ideals with linear quotients, and study their minimal resolutions. Using a contracting homotopy for the resolutions, we see that the minimal resolution of a matroidal monomial ideal admits a DGA structure.
Based on Schreyer's algorithm (Schreyer, 1980, 1991; Berkesch and Schreyer, 2014), we present two refined algorithms for the computation of syzygies. The two main ideas of the first algorithm, called LiftHybrid, are the following: First, we may leave out certain terms of module elements during the computation which do not contribute to the result. These terms are called "lower order terms", see Definition 4.2. Second, we do not need to order the remaining terms of these module elements during the computation. This significantly reduces the number of monomial comparisons for the arithmetic oper…
Let $G$ be a simple finite graph. A famous theorem of Dirac says that $G$ is chordal if and only if $G$ admits a perfect elimination order. It is known by Fröberg that the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ has a linear resolution if and only if the complementary graph $G^c$ of $G$ is chordal. In this article, we discuss some algebraic consequences of Dirac's theorem in the theory of homological shift ideals of edge ideals. Recall that if $I$ is a monomial ideal, $\mbox{HS}_k(I)$ is the monomial ideal generated by the $k$th multigraded shifts of $I$. We prove that $\mbox{HS}_1(I)$ has linear quotients, …
Consider an ideal $I\subset K[x_1,..., x_n]$, with $K$ an arbitrary field, generated by monomials of degree two. Assuming that $I$ does not have a linear resolution, we determine the step $s$ of the minimal graded free resolution of $I$ where nonlinear syzygies first appear, we show that at this step of the resolution nonlinear syzygies are concentrated in degree $s+3$, and we compute the corresponding graded Betti number $β_{s,s+3}$. The multidegrees of these nonlinear syzygies are also determined and the corresponding multigraded Betti numbers are shown to be all equal to 1.
Among other results, we prove that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, where $K$ is a field, and $a\geq b-1\geq0$ are integers such that $a+b\leq\mathrm{proj~dim}(S/I)$, then $$t_{a+b}\leq t_a+t_1+t_2+\cdots+t_b-\frac{b(b-1)}{2},$$ where $t_1,t_2,\dots$ are the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free $S$-resolution of $S/I$.
We study the binomial and monomial ideals arising from linear equivalence of divisors on graphs from the point of view of Gröbner theory. We give an explicit description of a minimal Gröbner bases for each higher syzygy module. In each case the given minimal Gröbner bases is also a minimal generating set. The Betti numbers of the binomial ideal and its natural initial ideal coincide and they correspond to the number of 'connected flags' in the graph. In particular the Betti numbers are independent of the characteristic of the base field. For complete graphs the problem was previously studied b…
The Riemann-Roch theorem on a graph G is related to Alexander duality in combinatorial commutive algebra. We study the lattice ideal given by chip firing on G and the initial ideal whose standard monomials are the G-parking functions. When G is a saturated graph, these ideals are generic and the Scarf complex is a minimal free resolution. Otherwise, syzygies are obtained by degeneration. We also develop a self-contained Riemann-Roch theory for artinian monomial ideals.
Let F. be a any free resolution of a Z^n-graded submodule of a free module over the polynomial ring K[x_1, ..., x_n]. We show that for a suitable term order on F., the initial module of the p'th syzygy module Z_p is generated by terms m_ie_i where the m_i are monomials in K[x_{p+1}, ..., x_n]. Also for a large class of free resolutions F., encompassing Eliahou-Kervaire resolutions, we show that a Gröbner basis for Z_p is given by the boundaries of generators of F_p. We apply the above to give lower bounds for the Stanley depth of the syzygy modules Z_p, in particular showing it is at least p+1…
Given a standard graded polynomial ring $R=k[x_1,...,x_n]$ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and a graded $k$-subalgebra $A=k[f_1,...,f_m]\subset R$, one relates the module $Ω_{A/k}$ of Kähler $k$-differentials of $A$ to the transposed Jacobian module $\mathcal{D}\subset \sum_{i=1}^n R dx_i$ of the forms $f_1,...,f_m$ by means of a {\em Leibniz map} $Ω_{A/k}\rar \mathcal{D}$ whose kernel is the torsion of $Ω_{A/k}$. Letting $\fp$ denote the $R$-submodule generated by the (image of the) syzygy module of $Ω_{A/k}$ and $\fz$ the syzygy module of $\mathcal{D}$, there is a natural inclusion $…
For each squarefree monomial ideal $I\subset S = k[x_{1},\ldots, x_{n}] $, we associate a simple graph $G_I$ by using the first linear syzygies of $I$. In cases, where $G_I$ is a cycle or a tree, we show the following are equivalent: (a) $ I $ has a linear resolution (b) $ I $ has linear quotients (c) $ I $ is a variable-decomposable ideal In addition, with the same assumption on $G_I$, we characterize all monomial ideals with a linear resolution. Using our results, we characterize all Cohen-Macaulay codimension $2$ monomial ideals with a linear resolution. As an other application of our resul…
In this paper we propose a general method for computing a minimal free right resolution of a finitely presented graded right module over a finitely presented graded noncommutative algebra. In particular, if such module is the base field of the algebra then one obtains its graded homology. The approach is based on the possibility to obtain the resolution via the computation of syzygies for modules over commutative algebras. The method behaves algorithmically if one bounds the degree of the required elements in the resolution. Of course, this implies a complete computation when the resolution is…
In this paper we use polarization to study the behavior of the depth and regularity of a monomial ideal $I$, locally at a variable $x_i$, when we lower the degree of all the highest powers of the variable $x_i$ occurring in the minimal generating set of $I$, and examine the depth and regularity of powers of edge ideals of clutters using combinatorial optimization techniques. If $I$ is the edge ideal of an unmixed clutter with the max-flow min-cut property, we show that the powers of $I$ have non-increasing depth and non-decreasing regularity. In particular edge ideals of unmixed bipartite grap…
In this short note we prove that the projective dimension of a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay square-free monomial ideal is equal to the maximal height of its minimal primes (also known as the big height), or equivalently, the maximal cardinality of a minimal vertex cover of its facet complex. This in particular gives a formula for the projective dimension of facet ideals of these classes of ideals, which are known to be sequentially Cohen-Macaulay: graph trees and simplicial trees, chordal graphs and some cycles, chordal clutters and graphs, and some path ideals to mention a few. Since polarizat…
We generalize some results of $\mathrm{v}$-number for arbitrary monomial ideals by showing that the $\mathrm{v}$-number of an arbitrary monomial ideal is the same as the $\mathrm{v}$-number of its polarization. We prove that the $\mathrm{v}$-number $\mathrm{v}(I(G))$ of the edge ideal $I(G)$, the induced matching number $\mathrm{im}(G)$ and the regularity $\mathrm{reg}(R/I(G))$ of a graph $G$, satisfy $\mathrm{v}(I(G))\leq \mathrm{im}(G)\leq \mathrm{reg}(R/I(G))$, where $G$ is either a bipartite graph, or a $(C_{4},C_{5})$-free vertex decomposable graph, or a whisker graph. There is an open pr…
We give a complete combinatorial characterization of all possible polarizations of powers of the graded maximal ideal $(x_1,x_2,\cdots,x_m)^n$ of a polynomial ring in $m$ variables. We also give a combinatorial description of the Alexander duals of such polarizations. In the three variable case $m=3$ and also in the power two case $n=2$ the descriptions are easily visualized and we show that every polarization defines a (shellable) simplicial ball. We give conjectures relating to topological properties and to algebraic geometry, in particular that any polarization of an Artinian monomial ideal…
