There is a canonical way to associate two simplicial complexes K, L to any relation $R\subset X\times Y$. Moreover, the geometric realizations of K and L are homotopy equivalent. This was studied in the fifties by C.H. Dowker. In this article we prove a Galois-type correspondence for relations $R\subset X\times Y$ when X is fixed and use these constructions to investigate finite posets (or equivalently, finite topological spaces) from a geometrical point of view. Given any poset $(X, \leq)$, we define the simplicial complexes K, L associated to the relation $\leq$. In many cases these polyhedra have the same homotopy type as the standard simplicial complex C of nonempty finite chains in X. We give a complete characterization of the simplicial complexes that are the K or L-complexes of some finite poset and prove that K and L are geometrically equivalent to the smaller complexes K',L' induced by the relation <. More precisely, we prove that K (resp. L) simplicially collapses to K' (resp. L').
Two axioms of order geoemtry are the poset axioms of transitivity and antisymmetry of the relation "is in front of" when looking from a point. From these axioms, by looking from an interval instead of a point, further well-known axioms of order geometry are generated in the following sense: Transitivity when looking from an interval is equivalent to Assioma XIII of paragraph 10 in G. Peano, I principii di geometria logacimente exposti. Assuming this axiom, antisymmetry when looking from an interval is equivalent VIII. Grundsatz in paragraph 1 in M. Pasch, Vorlesungen ueber neuere Geometrie. Fu…
We consider a linear relation which expresses Stanley's chromatic symmetric function for a poset in terms of the chromatic symmetric functions of some closely related posets, which we call the modular law. By applying this in the context of (3+1)-free posets, we are able to reduce Stanley and Stembridge's conjecture that the chromatic symmetric functions of all (3+1)-free posets are e-positive to the case of (3+1)-and-(2+2)-free posets, also known as unit interval orders. In fact, our reduction can be pushed further to a much smaller class of posets, for which we have no satisfying characteriz…
In this paper we show that the set of closure relations on a finite poset P forms a supersolvable lattice, as suggested by Rota. Furthermore this lattice is dually isomorphic to the lattice of closed sets in a convex geometry (in the sense of Edelman and Jamison). We also characterize the modular elements of this lattice and compute its characteristic polynomial.
For a permutation $ω\in S_{n}$ Denoncourt constructed a poset $M_ω$ which is the set of join-irreducibles of the Lehmer codes of the permutations in $[e, ω]$ in the inversion order on $S_{n}$. In this paper we show that $M_ω$ is a $B_{2}$-free poset if and only if $ω$ is a 3412-3421-avoiding permutation.
Given a set S of n points in general position, we consider all k-th order Voronoi diagrams on S, for k=1,...,n, simultaneously. We deduce symmetry relations for the number of faces, number of vertices and number of circles of certain orders. These symmetry relations are independent of the position of the sites in S. As a consequence we show that the reduced Euler characteristic of the poset of faces equals zero whenever n odd.
Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a poset on $[n]$, $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{P})$ the set of order ideals of $\mathcal{P}$ and $E$ an equivalence relation on $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{P})$. The concepts of the dual relation $E^*$ of an equivalence relation $E$, the $E$-weight (resp. $E^*$-weight) distribution of a linear poset code (resp. its dual poset code) and a MacWilliams-type equivalence relation are introduced. We give a characterization for a MacWilliams-type equivalence relation in terms of MacWilliams-type identities for a linear poset code. Three kinds of equivalence relations on $\mathcal{I}(\mathcal{…
We study a class of polyhedra associated to marked posets. Examples of these polyhedra are Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and cones, as well as Berenstein-Zelevinsky polytopes, all of which have appeared in the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras. The faces of these polyhedra correspond to certain partitions of the underlying poset and we give a combinatorial characterization of these partitions. We specify a class of marked posets that give rise to polyhedra with facets in correspondence to the covering relations of the poset. On the convex geometrical side, we describe the recession…
We study dismantlability in graphs. In order to compare this notion to similar operations in posets (partially ordered sets) or in simplicial complexes, we prove that a graph G dismants on a subgraph H if and only if H is a strong deformation retract of G. Then, by looking at a triangle relating graphs, posets and simplicial complexes, we get a precise correspondence of the various notions of dismantlability in each framework. As an application, we study the link between the graph of morphisms from a graph G to a graph H and the polyhedral complex Hom(G,H); this gives a more precise statement …
In this paper we study finite Eulerian posets which are binomial, Sheffer or triangular. These important classes of posets are related to the theory of generating functions and to geometry. The results of this paper are organized as follows: We completely determine the structure of Eulerian binomial posets and, as a conclusion, we are able to classify factorial functions of Eulerian binomial posets; We give an almost complete classification of factorial functions of Eulerian Sheffer posets by dividing the original question into several cases; In most cases above, we completely determine the st…
The Pareto dominance relation of a preference profile is (the asymmetric part of) a partial order. For any integer n, the problem of the existence of an n-agent preference profile that generates the given Pareto dominance relation is to investigate the dimension of the partial order. We provide a characterization of a partial order having dimension n in general.
It is known that there exists an order isomorphism between the Weyl group orbit through a minuscule weight of a simply-laced finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra and the set of all order filters in a self-dual connected d-complete poset. In this paper, we try to extend this fact to the case of multiply-laced finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras by using the "folding" technique with respect to a Dynkin diagram automorphism.
A monoid $M$ generated by a set $S$ of symbols can be described as the set of equivalence classes of finite words in $S$ under some relations that specify when some contiguous sequence of symbols can be replaced by another. If $a,b\in S$, a relation of the form $ab=ba$ is said to be a \emph{commutation relation}. Words that are equivalent using only a sequence of commutation relations are said to be in the same \emph{commutation class}. We introduce certain partially ordered sets that we call \emph{word posets} that capture the structure of commutation classes in monoids. The isomorphism class…
We generalize the concept of combinatorial nested set complexes to posets and exhibit the topological relationship between the arising nested set complexes and the order complex of the underlying poset. In particular, a sufficient condition is given so that this relationship is actually a subdivision. We use the results to generalize the proof method of Čukić and Delucchi, so far restricted to semilattices, for a result of Björner, Paffenholz, Sjöstrand and Ziegler on the Bier construction on posets.
An order-theoretic generalization of Seymour relations describing the connection between the set-theoretic blocker, deletion, and contraction maps on clutters, is presented.
Natural join of $di-bigraphs$ that is directed biparted graphs and their corresponding adjacency matrices is defined and then applied to investigate the so called cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ digraphs called $KoDAGs$. $KoDAGs$ are special orderable directed acyclic graphs which are cover relation digraphs of cobweb posets introduced by the author few years ago. $KoDAGs$ appear to be distinguished family of $Ferrers$ digraphs which are natural join of a corresponding ordering chain of one direction directed cliques called $di-bicliques$. These digraphs serve to represent faithfully correspon…
Let X be a finite set. This paper describes some topological and combinatorial properties of the poset Ω_X of order relations on X. In particular, the homotopy type of all the intervals in Ω_X is precisely determined, and the Möbius function of Ω_X is computed.
We introduce Artinian Gorenstein algebras defined by the face posets of regular polyhedra. We consider the strong Lefschetz property and Hodge--Riemann relation for the algebras. We show the strong Lefschetz property of the algebras for all Platonic solids. On the other hand, for some Platonic solids, we show that the algebras do not satisfy the Hodge--Riemann relation with respect to some strong Lefschetz elements.
In recent years it has been noted that a number of combinatorial structures such as real and complex hyperplane arrangements, interval greedoids, matroids and oriented matroids have the structure of a finite monoid called a left regular band. Random walks on the monoid model a number of interesting Markov chains such as the Tsetlin library and riffle shuffle. The representation theory of left regular bands then comes into play and has had a major influence on both the combinatorics and the probability theory associated to such structures. In a recent paper, the authors established a close conn…
We study two constructions related to the intervals of finite posets. The first one is a poset. The second one is more complicated. Loosely speaking it can be seen as a poset with some extra zero-relations. As main result, we show that these two constructions are equivalent at the level of derived categories.
In this paper, we study the incidence algebra $T$ of the attenuated space poset $\mathcal{A}_q(N, M)$. We consider the following topics. We consider some generators of $T$: the raising matrix $R$, the lowering matrix $L$, and a certain diagonal matrix $K$. We describe some relations among $R, L, K$. We put these relations in an attractive form using a certain matrix $S$ in $T$. We characterize the center $Z(T)$. Using $Z(T)$, we relate $T$ to the quantum group $U_τ({\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$ with $τ^2=q$. We consider two elements $A, A^*$ in $T$ of a certain form. We find necessary and sufficient con…
We study degree sequences for simplicial posets and polyhedral complexes, generalizing the well-studied graphical degree sequences. Here we extend the more common generalization of vertex-to-facet degree sequences by considering arbitrary face-to-flag degree sequences. In particular, these may be viewed as natural refinements of the flag f-vector of the poset. We investigate properties and relations of these generalized degree sequences, proving linear relations between flag degree sequences in terms of the composition of rank jumps of the flag. As a corollary, we recover an f-vector inequalit…
Bipartitional relations were introduced by Foata and Zeilberger in their characterization of relations which give rise to equidistribution of the associated inversion statistic and major index. We consider the natural partial order on bipartitional relations given by inclusion. We show that, with respect to this partial order, the bipartitional relations on a set of size $n$ form a graded lattice of rank $3n-2$. Moreover, we prove that the order complex of this lattice is homotopy equivalent to a sphere of dimension $n-2$. Each proper interval in this lattice has either a contractible order co…
Anders Bjorner characterized which finite graded partially ordered sets arise as the posets of closure relations on cells of a finite, regular CW complex. His characterization of these "CW posets" required each open interval $(\hat{0},u)$ to have order complex homeomorphic to a sphere of dimension $rk(u)-2$. Work of Danaraj and Klee showed that sufficient conditions were for the poset to be thin and shellable. The proof of the Poincare Conjecture enables the requirement of shellability to be replaced by the homotopy Cohen-Macaulay property. This expands the range of tools that may be used to p…
Let $B_n$ be the poset generated by the subsets of $[n]$ with the inclusion as relation and let $P$ be a finite poset. We want to embed $P$ into $B_n$ as many times as possible such that the subsets in different copies are incomparable. The maximum number of such embeddings is asymptotically determined for all finite posets $P$ as $\frac{n \choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}{M(P)}$, where $M(P)$ denotes the minimal size of the convex hull of a copy of $P$. We discuss both weak and strong (induced) embeddings.
We identify two key conditions that a subset $A$ of a poset $P$ may satisfy to guarantee the transfer of continuity properties from $P$ to $A$. We then highlight practical cases where these key conditions are fulfilled. Along the way we are led to consider subsets of a given poset $P$ whose way-below relation is the restriction of the way-below relation of $P$, which we call way-below preserving subposets. As an application, we show that every conditionally complete poset with the interpolation property contains a largest continuous way-below preserving subposet. Most of our results are expres…
We characterize the finite distributive lattices which admit a complete valuation, that is bijective over a set of consecutive natural numbers, with the additional conditions of completeness (Definition 2.3). We prove that such lattices are downset lattices of finite posets of dimension at most two, and determine a realizer through a recursive relation between weights on the poset associated to valuation. The relation shows that the weights count chains in the complementary poset. Conversely, we prove that a valuation defined on a poset of dimension at most two, through the weight function whi…
We establish formulas for the number of all downsets (or equivalently, of all antichains) of a finite poset P. Then, using these numbers, we determine recursively and explicitly the number of all posets having a fixed set of minimal points and inducing the poset P on the non- minimal points. It turns out that these counting functions are closely related to a collection of downset numbers of certain subposets. Since any function of that kind is an exponential sum (with the number of minimal points as exponent), we call it the exponential function of the poset. Some linear equations, divisibilit…
This note is a response to one of problems posed by A.K. Kwasniewski in one of his recent papers. Namely for the sequence of finite cobweb subposets, the looked for explicit formulas for corresponding sequence of characteristic polynomials are discovered and delivered here. The recurrence relation defining arbitrary family of charactristic polynomials of finite cobweb posets is also derived.
In order theory, a rank function measures the vertical "level" of a poset element. It is an integer-valued function on a poset which increments with the covering relation, and is only available on a graded poset. Defining a vertical measure to an arbitrary finite poset can be accomplished by extending a rank function to be interval-valued. This establishes an order homomorphism from a base poset to a poset over real intervals, and a standard (canonical) specific interval rank function is available as an extreme case. Various ordering relations are available over intervals, and we begin in this…
This is both an expository and research paper where we advocate a systematic study of continuous analogues of finite partially ordered sets, convex polytopes, oriented matroids, arrangements of subspaces, finite simplicial complexes, and other combinatorial structures. Among the illustrative examples are an Euler formula for a class of `continuous convex polytopes' (conjectured by Kalai and Wigderson), a duality result for a class of `continuous matroids', a calculation of the Euler characteristic of ideals in the Grassmannian poset (related to a problem of Gian-Carlo Rota), an exposition of t…
We introduce two polynomials (in $q$) associated with a finite poset $P$ that encode some information on the covering relation in $P$. If $P$ is a distributive lattice, and hence $P$ is isomorphic to the poset of dual order ideals in a poset $L$, then these polynomials coincide and the coefficient of $q$ equals the number of $k$-element antichains in $L$. In general, these two covering polynomials are different, and we introduce a deviation polynomial of $P$, which measures the difference between these two. We then compute all these polynomials in the case, where $P$ is one of the posets assoc…
The classical Dehn--Sommerville relations assert that the $h$-vector of an Eulerian simplicial complex is symmetric. We establish three generalizations of the Dehn--Sommerville relations: one for the $h$-vectors of pure simplicial complexes, another one for the flag $h$-vectors of balanced simplicial complexes and graded posets, and yet another one for the toric $h$-vectors of graded posets with restricted singularities. In all of these cases, we express any failure of symmetry in terms of "errors coming from the links." For simplicial complexes, this further extends Klee's semi-Eulerian relat…
The face poset of the permutohedron realizes the combinatorics of linearly ordered partitions of the set $[n]=\{1,...,n\}$. Similarly, the cyclopermutohedron is a virtual polytope that realizes the combinatorics of cyclically ordered partitions of the set $[n+1]$. The cyclopermutohedron was introduced by the third author by motivations coming from configuration spaces of polygonal linkages. In the paper we prove two facts: (1) the volume of the cyclopermutohedron equals zero, and (2) the homology groups $H_k$ for $k=0,...,n-2$ of the face poset of the cyclopermutohedron are non-zero free abeli…
We introduce the notion of cylinder of a relation in the context of posets, extending the construction of the mapping cylinder. We establish a local-to-global result for relations, generalizing Quillen's Theorem A for order preserving maps, and derive novel formulations of the classical Nerve Theorem for posets and simplicial complexes, suitable for covers with not necessarily contractible intersections.
We consider a category of all finite partial orderings with quotient maps as arrows and construct a Fraïssé sequence in this category. Then we use commonly known relations between partial orders and lattices to construct a sequence of lattices associated with it. Each of these two sequences has a limit object -- an inverse limit, which is an object of our interest as well. In the first chapter there are some preliminaries considering partial orders, lattices, topology, inverse limits, category theory and Fraïssé theory, which are used later. In the second chapter there are our results consider…
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these per…
We study the polyhedral geometry of the hyperplanes orthogonal to the weights of the first and the second fundamental representations of $sl_n$ inside the dual fundamental Weyl chamber. We obtain generating functions that enumerate the flats and the faces of a fixed dimension. In addition, we describe the extreme rays of the incidence geometry and classify simplicial faces. From the perspective of supersymmetric gauge theories with 8 supercharges in five dimensional spacetime, the poset of flats is isomorphic to the network of mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches. On the other hand, the poset of faces…
Let ${\cal H}(A,B)$ denote the set of homomorphisms from the poset $A$ to the poset $B$. In previous studies, the author has started to analyze what it is in the structure of finite posets $R$ and $S$ that results in $# {\cal H}(P,R) \leq # {\cal H}(P,S)$ for every finite poset $P$, if additional regularity conditions are imposed. In the present paper, it is examined if this relation (with or without regularity conditions) is compatible with the operations of order arithmetic and if cancellation rules hold.
The concept of a tolerance relation, shortly called tolerance, was studied on various algebras since the seventieth of the twentieth century by B. Zelinka and the first author. Since tolerances need not be transitive, their blocks may overlap and hence in general the set of all blocks of a tolerance cannot be converted into a quotient algebra in the same way as in the case of congruences. However, G. Czédli showed that lattices can be factorized by means of tolerances in a natural way, and J. Grygiel and S. Radelecki proved some variant of an Isomorphism Theorem for tolerances on lattices. The…
An affine monoid is an additive monoid which is cancellative, pointed and finitely generated. An affine monoid $Λ$ has the partial order defined by $λ\le λ+ μ$. The Frobenius complex is the order complex of an open interval of $Λ$ with respect to this partial order. The reduced homology of the Frobenius complex is related to the torsion group of the monoid algebra $K[Λ]$. In this paper, we pay attention to homotopy types of Frobenius complexes, and we express the homotopy types of the Frobenius complexes of $Λ$ in terms of those of $Λ_1$ and $Λ_2$ when $Λ$ is an affine monoid obtained by gluin…
We give an example showing that the product and linearization formulas for the Wick product versions of the $q$-Charlier polynomials in (Anshelevich 2004) are incorrect. Next, we observe that the relation between monomials and several families of Wick polynomials is governed by "incomplete" versions of familiar posets. We compute Möbius functions for these posets, and prove a general poset product formula. These provide new proofs and new inversion and product formulas for Wick product versions of Hermite, Chebyshev, Charlier, free Charlier, and Laguerre polynomials. By different methods, we p…
We continue the Coxeter spectral analysis of finite connected posets $I$ that are non-negative in the sense that their symmetric Gram matrix $G_I:=\frac{1}{2}(C_I + C_I^{tr})\in\mathbb{M}_{m}(\mathbb{Q})$ is positive semi-definite of rank $n\geq 0$, where $C_I\in\mathbb{M}_m(\mathbb{Z})$ is the incidence matrix of $I$ encoding the relation $\preceq_I$. We extend the results of [Fundam. Inform., 139.4(2015), 347--367] and give a complete Coxeter spectral classification of finite connected posets $I$ of Dynkin type $\mathbb{A}_n$. We show that such posets $I$, with $|I|>1$, yield exactly $\lfloo…
