This paper studies the notions of star and semistar operations over a polynomial ring. It aims at characterizing when every upper to zero in $R[X]$ is a $*$-maximal ideal and when a $*$-maximal ideal $Q$ of $R[X]$ is extended from $R$, that is, $Q=(Q\cap R)[X]$ with $Q\cap R\not =0$, for a given star operation of finite character $*$ on $R[X]$. We also answer negatively some questions raised by Anderson-Clarke by constructing a Prüfer domain $R$ for which the $v$-operation is not stable.
In this note, we study the Cohen-Macaulayness of non-Noetherian rings. We show that Hochster's celebrated theorem that a finitely generated normal semigroup ring is Cohen-Macaulay does not extend to non-Noetherian rings. We also show that for any valuation domain $V$ of finite Krull dimension, $V[x]$ is Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of Hamilton-Marley.
In this note, we give the Cohen type theorem for uniformly $S$-Noetherian modules and the Eakin-Nagata type theorem for uniformly $S$-Noetherian rings. We also solve an open question proposed by Kim and Lim [5,Question 4.10].
In this paper, after giving a criterion for a Noetherian local ring to be quasi-Gorenstein, we obtain some sufficient conditions for a quasi- Gorenstein ring to be Gorenstein. In the course, we provide a slight generalization of a theorem of Evans and Griffith.
In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the index of reducibility and Chern coefficients for primary ideals. As an application, we give characterizations of a Cohen-Macaulay ring in terms of its type, irreducible multiplicity, and Chern coefficients with respect to certain parameter ideals in Noetherian local rings.
We study the ring extensions R \subseteq T having the same set of prime ideals provided Nil(R) is a divided prime ideal. Some conditions are given under which no such T exist properly containing R. Using idealization theory, the examples are also discussed to strengthen the results.
In this note, we show that a strongly $ϕ$-ring $R$ is a $ϕ$-PvMR if and only if any $ϕ$-torsion free $R$-module is $ϕ$-$w$-flat, if and only if any divisible module is nonnil-absolutely $w$-pure module, if and only if any $h$-divisible module is nonnil-absolutely $w$-pure module, if and only if any finitely generated nonnil ideal of $R$ is $w$-projective.
The rank of a ring $R$ is the supremum of minimal cardinalities of generating sets of $I$ as $I$ ranges over ideals of $R$. Matson showed that every positive integer occurs as the rank of some ring $R$. Motivated by the result of Cohen and Gilmer that a ring of finite rank has Krull dimension $0$ or $1$, we give four different constructions of rings of rank $n$ (for all positive integers n). Two constructions use one-dimensional domains, and the former of these directly generalizes Matson's construction. Our third construction uses Artinian rings (dimension zero), and our last construction use…
In this note, we consider a situation that is generally used as an intermediate technical step in proving the Artin-Rees lemma but otherwise is not much discussed in introductory accounts of commutative algebra. I hope to show in this note that such technical step deserves more recognition and emphasis in any introduction to commutative algebra because it can be used to prove some significant results in a straight-forward manner, including a generalization of a theorem by Pierre Cartier and John Tate.
J. Berson, J. W. Bikker and A. van den Essen proved that for a non-zerodivisor $a$ in a commutative ring $R$ containing $Q$ if the polynomials $f_1,\dots,f_{n-1}$ in $R[X_1,\dots,X_n]$ form a partial coordinate system over the rings $R_a$ and $\dfrac{R}{aR}$ then $f_1,\dots,f_{n-1}$ form a partial coordinate system over the ring $R$. In this note we show that the theory of residual variables of Bhatwadekar-Dutta and its recent extension by Das-Dutta, extends their result to the case when $a$ is an arbitrary element of $A$.
In this note we characterize the (resp., weak) Gorenstein global dimension for an arbitrary ring. Also, we extend the well-known Hilbert's syzygy Theorem to the weak Gorenstein global dimension and we study the weak Gorenstein homological dimensions of direct product of rings, which gives examples of non-coherent rings of finite Gorenstein dimensions $>0$ and infinite classical weak dimension.
Let $C \subset {\bf N}^d$ be an affine semigroup, and $R=K[C]$ its semigroup ring. This paper is a collection of various results on "$C$-graded" $R$-modules, especially, monomial ideals. For example, we show the following: If $R$ is normal and $I$ is a radical monomial ideal (i.e., $R/I$ is a generalization of Stanley-Reisner rings), then the sequentially Cohen-Macaulay property of $R/I$ is a topological property of the "geometric realization" of the cell complex associated with $I$. Moreover, we can give a squarefree modules/constructible sheaves version of this result.
We investigate the algebraic structure on the set of closure operations of a ring. We show the set of closure operations is not a monoid under composition for a discrete valuation ring. Even the set of semiprime operations over a DVR is not a monoid; however, it is the union of two monoids, one being the left but not right act of the other. We also determine all semiprime operations over the ring $K[[t^2, t^3]]$.
We consider a conjecture of Watanabe and Yoshida concerning the Hilbert - Kunz multiplicity of an ideal in a Cohen-Macaulay ring and provide a proof of the conjecture in the case the ring is graded.
Unlike the Gorenstein projective and injective dimensions, the majority of results on the Gorenstein flat dimension have been established only over Noetherian (or coherent) rings. Naturally, one would like to generalize these results to any associative ring. In this direction, we show that the Gorenstein flat dimension is a refinement of the classical flat dimension over any ring; and we investigate the relations between the Gorenstein projective dimension and the Gorenstein flat dimension.
We prove that cancellation of reflexive modules over affine rings holds under some restrictions. We construct examples to show that this is false even over polynomial rings without the extra assumptions.
In 1994, Matsuda and Okabe introduced the notion of semistar operation. This concept extends the classical concept of star operation (cf. for instance, Gilmer's book \cite{G}) and, hence, the related classical theory of ideal systems based on the works by W. Krull, E. Noether, H. Prüfer and P. Lorenzen from 1930's. In \cite{FL1} and \cite{FL2} the current authors investigated properties of the Kronecker function rings which arise from arbitrary semistar operations on an integral domain $D$. In this paper we extend that study and also generalize Kang's notion of a star Nagata ring \cite{Kang:19…
Let $u:A\to B$ be a morphism of noetherian local rings. We obtain smoothness criteria for algebras with differential bases, in the case of rings containing a field of characteristic $p>0.$ We also give smoothness criteria for reduced morphisms.
Let $A\subseteq B$ be a ring extension and $\mathcal{G}$ be a set of $A$-submodules of $B$. We introduce a class of closure operations on $\mathcal{G}$ (which we call \emph{multiplicative operations on $(A,B,\mathcal{G})$}) that generalizes the classes of star, semistar and semiprime operations. We study how the set $\mathrm{Mult}(A,B,\mathcal{G})$ of these closure operations vary when $A$, $B$ or $\mathcal{G}$ vary, and how $\mathrm{Mult}(A,B,\mathcal{G})$ behave under ring homomorphisms. As an application, we show how to reduce the study of star operations on analytically unramified one-dime…
The Eisenbud-Mazur conjecture states that given an equicharacteristic zero, regular local ring (R,\mathfrak{m}) and a prime ideal P\subset R, we have that P^{(2)}\subseteq mP. In this paper, we computationally prove that the conjecture holds in the special case of certain prime ideals in formal power series rings.
In this note we first give a new bound on $e_{HK}(\sim)$ the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of invariant rings, by the help of the Noether's bound. Then, we simplify, extend and present applications of the reciprocity formulae due to L. Smith. He proved the formula over polynomial rings and his result is tight in the following sense: Over complete intersection rings with isolated singularity we show that the reciprocity formulae "$e_{HK}(R/I)+ e_{HK}(R/J) = e_{HK}(R/\underline{f})$" is equivalent with $\pd(I)<\infty$ when $I$ is an $\fm$-primary unmixed ideal linked to $J$ along with a regular sequ…
In this article, the projectivity of finitely generated flat modules of a commutative ring are studied from a topological point of view. Then various interesting results are obtained. For instance, it is shown that if a ring has either a finitely many minimal primes or a finitely many maximal ideals then every finitely generated flat module over it is projective. It is also shown that if a particular subset of the prime spectrum of a ring satisfies some certain ascending or descending chain conditions then every finitely generated flat module over this ring is projective. These results general…
For a Noetherian regular ring $S$ and for a fixed ideal $J\subset S$, assume that the associated primes of local cohomology module $H^i_J(S)$ does not contain $p$ for some $i\geq 0$, and we call this as a property $\textit{\textbf{P}}^{i,p}_{J,S}$ or $\textit{\textbf{P}}$ for brevity. Recently, in Theorem 1.2 of \cite{Nu1}, it is proved that in a Noetherian regular local ring $S$ and for a fixed ideal $J\subset S$, associated primes of local cohomology module $H^i_J(S)$ for $i\geq 0$ is finite, if it does not contain $p$. In this paper, we study how the property $\textit{\textbf{P}}$ (as menti…
For a finite module $M$ over a local, equicharacteristic ring $(R,m)$, we show that the well-known formula $\cohdim(m,M)=\dim M$ becomes trivial if ones uses Matlis duals of local cohomology modules together with spectral sequences. We also prove a new, ring-theoretic vanishing criterion for local cohomology modules.
Let $R$ be a ring. An $R$-module $M$ is said to be a weak $w$-projective module if ${\rm Ext}_R^1(M,N)=0$ for all $N \in \mathcal{P}_{w}^{\dagger_\infty}$ (see, \cite{FLQ}). In this paper, we introduce and study some properties of weak $w$-projective modules. And we use these modules to characterize some classical rings, for example, we will prove that a ring $R$ is a $DW$-ring if and only if every weak $w$-projective is projective, $R$ is a Von Neumann regular ring if and only if every FP-projective is weak $w$-projective if and only if every finitely presented $R$-module is weak $w$-projecti…
Let $S$ be a commutative ring with identity and $R$ a unitary subring of $S$. An ideal $I$ of $S$ is called an $R$-conductor ideal of $S$ if $I=\{x\in S\mid xS\subseteq V\}$ for some intermediate ring $V$ of $R$ and $S$. In this note we present necessary and sufficient criterions for being an $R$-conductor ideal of $S$. We generalize several well known facts about them and present a simple approach to rediscover the results of both old and recent papers. We sketch the boundaries of our criterions by providing a few counterexamples.
In this work we define a primary spectrum of a commutative ring R with its Zariski topology $\mathfrak{T}$. We introduce several properties and examine some topological features of this concept. We also investigate differences between the prime spectrum and our primary spectrum.
It is known that any torsion element in a lambda-ring is nilpotent. In this note we deduce a sharp estimate for the nilpotence degree of such an element.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity. The co-maximal ideal graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is a graph whose vertices are the proper ideals of $R$ which are not contained in the Jacobson radical of $R$, and two vertices $I_1$ and $I_2$ are adjacent if and only if $I_1 + I_2 = R$. We classify all commutative rings whose co-maximal ideal graphs are planar. In 2012 the following question was posed: If $Γ(R)$ is an infinite star graph, can $R$ be isomorphic to the direct product of a field and a local ring? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this question.
Euclidean functions with values in an arbitrary well-ordered set were first considered in a 1949 work of Motzkin and studied in more detail in work of Fletcher, Samuel and Nagata in the 1970's and 1980's. Here these results are revisited, simplified, and extended. The two main themes are (i) consideration of Ord-valued functions on an Artinian poset and (ii) use of ordinal arithmetic, including the Hessenberg-Brookfield ordinal sum. In particular, to any Euclidean ring we associate an ordinal invariant, its Euclidean order type, and we initiate a study of this invariant. The main new result gi…
This short note is the generalization of Faugere F4-algorithm for polynomial rings with coefficients in Euclidean rings. This algorithm computes successively a Groebner basis replacing the reduction of one single s-polynomial in Buchberger's algorithm by the simultaneous reduction of several polynomials.
In this note we give a simple proof of the fact that local rings of dimension one have the strong uniform Artin-Rees property. Moreover, we give two examples of rings of dimension two where the property fails.
Let $A$ be a ring of dimension $d$. Assume that for every finite extension ring $R$ of $A$, E_{d+1}(R) acts transitively on Um_{d+1}(R). Then we prove that E(A\oplus P) acts transitively on Um(A\oplus P), for any projective A-module P of rank d. As a consequence of this, we generalise some results of Gubeladze.
Recently, Edo-Poloni constructed a family of tame automorphisms of a polynomial ring in three variables which degenerates to a wild automorphism. In this note, we generalize the example by a different method.
Given a stable semistar operation of finite type $\star$ on an integral domain $D$, we show that it is possible to define in a canonical way a stable semistar operation of finite type $[\star]$ on the polynomial ring $D[X]$, such that $D$ is a $\star$-quasi-Prüfer domain if and only if each upper to zero in $D[X]$ is a quasi-$[\star]$-maximal ideal. This result completes the investigation initiated by Houston-Malik-Mott \cite[Section 2]{hmm} in the star operation setting. Moreover, we show that $D$ is a Prüfer $\star$-multiplication (resp., a $\star$-Noetherian; a $\star$-Dedekind) domain if a…
In this note, we show that any epimorphism originating at a von Neumann regular ring (not necessary commutative) is a universal localization. As an application, we prove that the Telescope Conjecture holds for the unbounded derived categories of von Neumann regular rings (not necessary commutative).
Let A -> B be a homomorphism of commutative rings. The squaring operation is a functor Sq_{B/A} from the derived category D(B) of complexes B-modules into itself. The squaring operation is needed for the definition of rigid complexes (in the sense of Van den Bergh), that in turn leads to a new approach to Grothendieck duality for rings, schemes and even DM stacks. In our paper with J.J. Zhang from 2008 we introduced the squaring operation, and explored some of its properties. Unfortunately some of the proofs in that paper had severe gaps in them. In the present paper we reproduce the construct…
