In this note we give a simple proof of the fact that local rings of dimension one have the strong uniform Artin-Rees property. Moreover, we give two examples of rings of dimension two where the property fails.
Let $(R,m)$ be a local Noetherian ring, let $M$ be a finitely generated $R$-module and let $(F_{\bullet},\partial_{\bullet})$ be a free resolution of $M$. We find a uniform bound $h$ such that the Artin-Rees containment $I^n F_i\cap Im \, \partial_{i+1} \subseteq I^{n-h} Im \, \partial_{i+1}$ holds for all integers $i\ge d$, for all integers $n\ge h$, and for all ideals $I$ of $R$. In fact, we show that a considerably stronger statement holds. The uniform bound $h$ holds for all ideals and all resolutions of $d$th syzygy modules. In order to prove our statements, we introduce the concept of Ko…
For an ideal I in a regular local ring (R,m)$ with residue class field K = R/m or a standard graded K-algebra R we show that for k >> 0 --> the Artin--Rees number of the syzygy modules of I^k as submodules of the free modules from a free resolution is constant, and thereby present the Artin-Rees number as a proper replacement of regularity in the local situation, --> the ring R/I^k is Golod, its Poincer{é}-Betti series is rational and the Betti numbers of the free resolution of K over R/I^k are polynomials in k of a specific degree. The first result is an extension of work of Kodiyalam and Cut…
We interpret the Artin-Rees lemma and the Izumi theorem in term of Artin function and we obtain a stable version of the Artin-Rees lemma. We present different applications of these interpretations. First we show that the Artin function of $X_1X_2-X_3X_4$, as a polynomial in the ring of power series in more than three variables, is not bounded by an affine function. Then we prove that the Artin functions of a class of polynomials are bounded by affine functions and we use this to compute approximated integral closures of ideals.
The uniform Artin-Rees lemma has been proved by C. Huneke using algebraic methods. We give a new proof for this result in the analytic setting using residue calculus. We also have to introduce a type of product of complexes of vector bundles, which may be applicable in the solution of other division problems with respect to product ideals.
The purpose of this paper is to prove the following theorem of uniform Artin-Rees properties: Let $A$ be an excellent (in fact J-2) ring and let $N\subset M$ be two finitely generated $A$-modules such that ${\rm dim}(M/N)\leq 1$. Then there exists an integer $s\geq 1$ such that, for all integers $n\geq s$ and for all ideals $I$ of $A$, $I^{n}M\cap N=I^{n-s}(I^{s}M\cap N)$.
In this short note, we confirm a conjecture of Vasconcelos which states that the Rees algebra of any Artinian almost complete intersection monomial ideal is almost Cohen-Macaulay.
We study the Rees algebra of a perfect Gorenstein ideal of codimension 3 in a hypersurface ring. We provide a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of these rings by introducing a modified Jacobian dual and applying a recursive algorithm. Once the defining equations are known, we explore properties of these Rees algebras such as Cohen-Macaulayness and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
The acquisition of the defining equations of Rees algebras is a natural way to study these algebras and allows certain invariants and properties to be deduced. In this paper, we consider Rees algebras of codimension 2 perfect ideals of hypersurface rings and produce a minimal generating set for their defining ideals. Then, using generic Bourbaki ideals, we study Rees algebras of modules with projective dimension one over hypersurface rings. We describe the defining ideal of such algebras and determine Cohen-Macaulayness and other invariants.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the symbolic Rees rings of ideals defining certain finite sets of points in the projective plane over an algebraically closed field are finitely generated using a ring theoretical criterion which is known as Huneke's criterion.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a two-dimensional regular local ring with infinite residue class field. Then the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring in the sense of Goto-Takahashi-Taniguchi for every $\mathfrak{m}$-primary integrally closed ideal $I$ in $R$.
We present algorithms for the computation of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and of the fiber ring of equigenerated $\mm$-primary ideals in two variables. Applying these algorithms, we find a counter-example to a conjecture of Eisenbud and Ulrich which states that these regularities are equal.
In this article, we compute the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs. We obtain a lower bound for the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals. We also study some algebraic properties of the Rees algebra and special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs via algebraic properties of their initial algebra and Sagbi basis theory. We obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs.
We consider ideals of minors of a matrix, ideals of minors of a symmetric matrix, and ideals of Pfaffians of an alternating matrix. Assuming these ideals are of generic height, we characterize the condition $G_{s}$ for these ideals in terms of the heights of other ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the same matrix. We additionally obtain bounds on the generation and concentration degrees of the Rees rings of a subclass of such ideals via specialization of the Rees rings in the generic case. We do this by proving, given sufficient height conditions on ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the matrix, …
There is given a characterization for the Rees algebras of parameters in a Gorenstein local ring to be almost Gorenstein graded rings. A characterization is also given for the Rees algebras of socle ideals of parameters. The latter one shows almost Gorenstein Rees algebras rather rarely exist for socle ideals, if the dimension of the base local ring is greater than two.
A family of quotient rings of the Rees algebra associated to a commutative ring is studied. This family generalizes both the classical concept of idealization by Nagata and a more recent concept, the amalgamated duplication of a ring. It is shown that several properties of the rings of this family do not depend on the particular member.
Let $A$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with $\operatorname{dim} A = d\ge 3$, possessing the canonical module ${\mathrm K}_A$. Let $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ $(3 \le r \le d)$ be a subsystem of parameters of $A$ and set $Q= (a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r)$. It is shown that if the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(Q)$ of $Q$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, then $A$ is a regular local ring and $a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_r$ is a part of a regular system of parameters of $A$.
This paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition for Gorensteinness in Rees algebras of the $d$-th power of parameter ideals in certain Noetherian local rings of dimension $d\ge 2$. The main result of this paper produces many Gorenstein Rees algebras over non-Cohen-Macaulay local rings. For example, the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{q}^d)=\oplus_{i\ge 0}\mathfrak{q}^{di}$ is Gorenstein for every parameter ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ that is a reduction of the maximal ideal in a $d$-dimensional Buchsbaum local ring of depth 1 and multiplicity 2.
We determine the defining equations of the Rees algebra and of the special fiber ring of the ideal of maximal minors of a $2\times n$ sparse matrix. We prove that their initial algebras are ladder determinantal rings. This allows us to show that the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring are Cohen-Macaulay domains, they are Koszul, they have rational singularities in characteristic zero and are F-rational in positive characteristic.
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ an $R$-ideal. It is well-known that if the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ is Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein), then so is $R$, but the converse is not true in general. In this paper we investigate the Cohen-Macaulayness and Gorensteinness of the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ under the hypothesis of the extended Rees algebra $R[It,t^{-1}]$ is quasi-Gorenstein or the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ is a domain.
When $R$ is a Noetherian ring and we have a family of ideals in which every ideal contains at least one nonzero divisor, then it is already known that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of these ideals is equal to a saturated ideal. In such a case to get the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra we only need to saturate the first syzygies of direct sum of this family of ideals. However, this fact is not true, when at least one of these ideals does not contain any nonzero divisor. In this paper we show that the defining ideal of the multi-Rees algebra of a family of ideals of a pol…
Let $R$ be the face ring of a simplicial complex of dimension $d-1$ and ${\mathcal R}(\mathfrak{n})$ be the Rees algebra of the maximal homogeneous ideal $\mathfrak{n}$ of $R.$ We show that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function $HK(s)=\ell({\mathcal R}(\mathfrak n)/(\mathfrak n, \mathfrak n t)^{[s]})$ is given by a polynomial for all large $s.$ We calculate it in many examples and also provide a Macaulay2 code for computing $HK(s).$
In this paper we describe the defining equations of the Rees algebra and the special fiber ring of a truncation I of a complete intersection ideal in a polynomial ring over a field with homogeneous maximal ideal m. To describe explicitly the Rees algebra R(I) in terms of generators and relations we map another Rees ring R(M) onto it, where M is the direct sum of powers of m. We compute a Groebner basis of the ideal defining R(M). It turns out that the normal domain R(M) is a Koszul algebra and from this we deduce that in many instances R(I) is a Koszul algebra as well.
Let I be a divisorial ideal of a strongly F-regular ring R. Watanabe asked if the symbolic Rees algebra R_s(I) is Cohen-Macaulay whenever it is Noetherian. We develop the notion of multi-symbolic Rees algebras, and use this to show that R_s(I) is indeed Cohen-Macaulay whenever a certain auxiliary ring is finitely generated over R.
The supremum of reduction numbers of ideals having principal reductions is expressed in terms of the integral degree, a new invariant of the ring, which is finite provided the ring has finite integral closure. As a consequence, one obtains bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and for the Artin-Rees numbers.
A homogeneous ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$ is said to have the Rees property if, for any homogeneous ideal $J \subset S $ which contains $I$, the number of generators of $J$ is smaller than or equal to that of $I$. A homogeneous ideal $I \subset S$ is said to be $\mathfrak m$-full if $\mathfrak mI:y=I$ for some $y \in \mathfrak m$, where $\mathfrak m$ is the graded maximal ideal of $S$. It was proved by one of the authors that $\mathfrak m$-full ideals have the Rees property and that the converse holds in a polynomial ring with two variables. In this note, we give examples of ideals whic…
The question of when the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R} (I)= \bigoplus_{n \ge 0}I^n$ of $I$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring is explored, where $R$ is a two-dimensional regular local ring and $I$ a contracted ideal of $R$. It is known that ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring for every integrally closed ideal $I$ of $R$. The main results of the present paper show that if $I$ is a contracted ideal with $\mathrm{o}(I) \le 2$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, while if $\mathrm{o}(I) \ge 3$, then ${\mathcal R} (I)$ is not necessarily an almost Gorenstei…
In this paper, we estimate the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the (extended) Rees algebras in terms of some invariants of the base ring. Also, we give an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities of Rees algebras over Veronese subrings.
Using linear algebra methods we study certain algebraic properties of monomial rings and matroids. Let I be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field. If the Rees cone of I is quasi-ideal, we express the normalization of the Rees algebra of I in terms of an Ehrhart ring. We introduce the basis Rees cone of a matroid (or a polymatroid) and study their facets. Some applications to Rees algebras are presented. It is shown that the basis monomial ideal of a matroid (or a polymatroid) is normal.
Let $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $I$ be an ideal of $A$. We prove that the Rees algebra ${\mathcal R}(I)$ is an almost Gorenstein ring in the following cases: (1) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional excellent Gorenstein normal domain over an algebraically closed field $K \cong A/{\mathfrak m}$ and $I$ is a $p_g$-ideal; (2) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a two-dimensional almost Gorenstein local ring having minimal multiplicity and $I={\mathfrak m}^{\ell}$ for all $\ell \ge 1$; (3) $(A,{\mathfrak m})$ is a regular local ring of dimension $d \ge 2$ and $I={\mathfrak m}…
Let I be a complete m-primary ideal of a regular local ring (R,m). In the case where R has dimension two, the beautiful theory developed by Zariski implies that I factors uniquely as a product of powers of simple complete ideals and each of the simple complete factors of I has a unique Rees valuation. In the higher dimensional case, a simple complete ideal of R often has more than one Rees valuation, and a complete m-primary ideal I may have finitely many or infinitely many base points. For the ideals having finitely many base points, Lipman proves a unique factorization involving special star…
We discuss projective equivalence of ideals in Noetherian rings and the existence or failure of existence of projectively full ideals. We describe connections with the Rees valuations and Rees integers of an ideal, and consider the question of whether improvements can be made by passing to an integral extension ring.
In this paper we study homological properties of the Rees ring R of the graded maximal ideal of a standard graded k-algebra A. In particular we are interested the comparison of the depth and regularity of A and R.
We introduce (weighted) Segre and Rees products for posets and show that these constructions preserve the Cohen-Macaulay property over a field $k$ and homotopically. As an application we show that the weighted Segre product of two affine semigroup rings that are Koszul is again Koszul. This result generalizes previous results by Crona on weighted Segre products of polynomial rings. We also give a new proof of the fact that the Rees ring of a Koszul affine semigroup ring is again Koszul. The paper ends with a list of some open problems in the area.
In a previous paper we exhibited the somewhat surprising property that most direct links of prime ideals in Gorenstein rings are equimultiple ideals with reduction number $1$. This led to the construction of large families of Cohen--Macaulay Rees algebras. The first goal of this paper is to extend this result to arbitrary Cohen--Macaulay rings. The means of the proof are changed since one cannot depend so heavily on linkage theory. We then study the structure of the Rees algebra of these links, more specifically we describe their canonical module in sufficient detail to be able to characterize…
In \cite{rees} Rees gave a characterization for the normal joint reduction number zero of two $\m$-primary ideals in an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension two. Rees' result is a generalization of Zariski's product theorem for complete ideals in a regular local ring of dimension two. The aim of this paper is to extend Rees' theorem for the ordinary powers of $\m$-primary ideals $I$ and $J$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension two. Following Rees' approach, we define the modified Koszul homology modules $M^1_{r,s}(a^k,b^k)$ for a joint reduction $(a,b)$ of $I$ …
We investigate the Rees algebra and the toric ring of the squarefree monomial ideal associated to the three-dimensional Ferrers diagram. Under the projection property condition, we describe explicitly the presentation ideals of the Rees algebra and the toric ring. We show that the toric ring is a Koszul Cohen--Macaulay normal domain, while the Rees algebra is Koszul and the defining ideal is of fiber type.
In this paper, we shall study finite generation of symbolic Rees rings of the defining ideal ${\frak p}$ of the space monomial curve $(t^a, t^b, t^c)$ for pairwise coprime integers $a$, $b$, $c$. Suppose that the base field is of characteristic $0$ and the above ideal ${\frak p}$ is minimally generated by three polynomials. Under the assumption that the homogeneous element $ξ$ of the minimal degree in ${\frak p}$ is the negative curve, we determine the minimal degree of an element $η$ such that the pair $\{ ξ, η\}$ satisfies Huneke's criterion in the case where the symbolic Rees ring is Noethe…
We study some properties of a family of rings $R(I)_{a,b}$ that are obtained as quotients of the Rees algebra associated with a ring $R$ and an ideal $I$. In particular, we give a complete description of the spectrum of every member of the family and describe the localizations at a prime ideal. Consequently, we are able to characterize the Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties, generalizing known results stated in the local case. Moreover, we study when $R(I)_{a,b}$ is an integral domain, reduced, quasi-Gorenstein, or satisfies Serre's conditions.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the strong Rees property (SRP) for $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of a Noetherian local ring and prove that any power of the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ has its property if the associated graded ring $G$ of $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\text{depth} \ G \ge 2$. As its application, we characterize two-dimensional excellent normal local domains so that $\mathfrak{m}$ is a $p_g$-ideal. Finally we ask what $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals have SRP and state a conjecture which characterizes the case when $\mathfrak{m}^n$ are the only ideals which have SRP.
The regularity of the Rees ring of the edge ideal of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the matching number is a lower and matching number~$+1$ is an upper bound of the regularity, if the Rees algebra is normal. In general the induced matching number is a lower bound for the regularity, which can be shown by applying the squarefree divisor complex.
Given two determinantal rings over a field k. We consider the Rees algebra of the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety. When the Rees algebra and the Symmetric algebra coincide, we show that the Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay.
Let $J\subset I$ be ideals in a formally equidimensional local ring with $λ(I/J)<\infty.$ Rees proved that for all $n\gg0$, $λ(I^n/J^n)$ is a polynomial $P(I/J)(X)$ in $n$ of degree at most dim $R$ and $J$ is a reduction of $I$ if and only if deg $P(I/J)(X)\leq$ dim $R-1.$ We extend this result for all Noetherian filtrations of ideals in a formally equidimensional local ring and for (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations of ideals in analytically irreducible rings. We provide certain classes of ideals such that deg $P(I/J)$ achieves its maximal degree. On the other hand, for ideals $J\subset…
In this paper we give an effective characterization of Hilbert functions and polynomials of standard algebras over an Artinian equicharacteristic local ring; the cohomological properties of such algebras are also studied. We describe algorithms to check the admissibility of a given function or polynomial as a Hilbert function or polynomial, and to produce a standard algebra with a given Hilbert function.
In this paper we consider Hibi rings and Rees rings attached to a poset. We classify the ideal lattices of posets whose Hibi relations are indispensable and the ideal lattices of posets whose Hibi relations form a quadratic Groebner basis with respect to the rank lexicographic order. Similar classifications are obtained for Rees rings of Hibi ideals.
We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)$ of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$, where $I$ is an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of a $1$-dimensional local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, is a quasi-polynomial in $e$, for large $e.$ For $s \in \mathbb{N}$, we calculate the Hilbert-Samuel function of the $R$-module $I^{[s]}$ and obtain an explicit description of the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)\mathcal{R}(I)$ when $I$ is a parameter ideal in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension $d \geq 2$, proving that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function is a piecewise p…
This paper investigates the relationship between multiplicities and the degree sequence of ideals in graded algebras, gives multiplicity equations of graded rings via the degree sequence of ideals, and characterizes mixed multiplicities and multiplicities of Rees rings in terms of the degree sequence of ideals. As an application, the paper answered an open question on the multiplicity of Rees rings.
Let $A$ be a commutative noetherian ring and $I$ an ideal in $A$. We characterize algebraically when all the minimal primes of the associated graded ring $G_I A$ contract to minimal primes of $A/I$. This, applied to intersection theory, means that there are no embedded distinguished varieties of intersection. The characterization is in terms of the analytic spread of certain localizations of $I$, the symbolic Rees algebra and the normalization of the Rees algebra, and extends results of Huneke, Vasconcelos and Martí-Farré.
We give a characterization of the Lefschetz elements in Artinian Gorenstein rings over a field of characteristic zero in terms of the higher Hessians. As an application, we give new examples of Artinian Gorenstein rings which do not have the strong Lefschetz property.
There is a natural epimorphism from the symmetric algebra to the Rees algebra of an ideal. When this epimorphism is an isomorphism, we say that the ideal is of linear type. Given two determinantal rings over a field, we consider the diagonal ideal, the kernel of the multiplication map. We prove that the diagonal ideal is of linear type and recover the defining ideal of the Rees algebra in some special cases. The special fiber ring of the diagonal ideal is the homogeneous coordinate ring of the join variety.
Consider the blow-up Y of a weighted projective plane at a point in the open orbit over a field of characteristic 0. We assume that there exists a curve C on Y such that C^2<0 and C.E=1, where E is the exceptional curve. In this paper we give a (very simple) necessary and sufficient condition for finite generation of the Cox ring of Y (Theorem~1.2). It is an affirmative answer to a conjecture due to He and Kurano-Nishida.
