For a distribution $F^{*τ}$ of a random sum $S_τ=ξ_1+...+ξ_τ$ of i.i.d. random variables with a common distribution $F$ on the half-line $[0,\infty)$, we study the limits of the ratios of tails $\bar{F^{*τ}}(x)/\bar{F}(x)$ as $x\to\infty$ (here, $τ$ is a counting random variable which does not depend on $\{ξ_n\}_{n\ge1}$). We also consider applications of the results obtained to random walks, compound Poisson distributions, infinitely divisible laws, and subcritical branching processes.
We study randomly stopped sums via their asymptotic scales. First, finiteness of moments is considered. To generalise this study, asymptotic scales applicable to the class of all heavy-tailed random variables are used. The stopping is assumed to be independent of the underlying process, which is a random walk. The main result enables one to identify whether the asymptotic behaviour of a stopped sum is dominated by the increment, or the stopping variable. As a consequence of this result, new sufficient conditions for the moment determinacy of compounded sums are obtained.
We study lower limits for the ratio $\frac{\bar{F^{*τ}}(x)}{\bar F(x)}$ of tail distributions where $ F^{*τ}$ is a distribution of a sum of a random size $τ$ of i.i.d. random variables having a common distribution $F$, and a random variable $τ$ does not depend on summands.
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables, and $η$ be a counting random variable independent of this sequence. We consider conditions for $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ and $η$ under which the distribution function of the random sum $S_η=ξ_1+ξ_2+\cdots+ξ_η$ belongs to the class of consistently varying distributions. In our consideration, the random variables $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ are not necessarily identically distributed.
Let $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of independent random variables, and $η$ be a counting random variable independent of this sequence. In addition, let $S_0:=0$ and $S_n:=ξ_1+ξ_2+\cdots+ξ_n$ for $n\geqslant1$. We consider conditions for random variables $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ and $η$ under which the distribution functions of the random maximum $ξ_{(η)}:=\max\{0,ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots,ξ_η\}$ and of the random maximum of sums $S_{(η)}:=\max\{S_0,S_1,S_2,\ldots,S_η\}$ belong to the class of consistently varying distributions. In our consideration the random variables $\{ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots\}$ are not neces…
Let $X_1$ and $N\ge 0$ be integer valued power law random variables. For a randomly stopped sum $S_N=X_1+\cdots+X_N$ of independent and identically distributed copies of $X_1$ we establish a first order asymptotics of the local probabilities $P(S_N=t)$ as $t\to+\infty$. Using this result we show the $k^{-δ}$, $0\le δ\le 1$ scaling of the local clustering coefficient (of a randomly selected vertex of degree $k$) in a power law affiliation network.
We study conditions under which $P(S_τ>x)\sim P(M_τ>x)\sim EτP(ξ_1>x)$ as $x\to\infty$, where $S_τ$ is a sum $ξ_1+...+ξ_τ$ of random size $τ$ and $M_τ$ is a maximum of partial sums $M_τ=\max_{n\leτ}S_n$. Here $ξ_n$, $n=1$, 2, ..., are independent identically distributed random variables whose common distribution is assumed to be subexponential. We consider mostly the case where $τ$ is independent of the summands; also, in a particular situation, we deal with a stopping time. Also we consider the case where $Eξ>0$ and where the tail of $τ$ is comparable with or heavier than that of $ξ$, and obt…
We present and analyse the nonlinear classical pure birth process $\mathpzc{N} (t)$, $t>0$, and the fractional pure birth process $\mathpzc{N}^ν(t)$, $t>0$, subordinated to various random times, namely the first-passage time $T_t$ of the standard Brownian motion $B(t)$, $t>0$, the $α$-stable subordinator $\mathpzc{S}^α(t)$, $α\in (0,1)$, and others. For all of them we derive the state probability distribution $\hat{p}_k (t)$, $k \geq 1$ and, in some cases, we also present the corresponding governing differential equation. We also highlight interesting interpretations for both the subordinated …
We consider the self-normalized sums $T_{n}=\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_{i}Y_{i}/\sum_{i=1}^{n}Y_{i}$, where ${Y_{i} : i\geq 1}$ are non-negative i.i.d. random variables, and ${X_{i} : i\geq 1} $ are i.i.d. random variables, independent of ${Y_{i} : i \geq 1}$. The main result of the paper is that each subsequential limit law of T_n$ is continuous for any non-degenerate $X_1$ with finite expectation, if and only if $Y_1$ is in the centered Feller class.
Let $\bX=\{X_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ and $\bY=\{Y_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ be two independent random sequences. We obtain rates of convergence to the normal law of randomly weighted self-normalized sums $$ ψ_n(\bX,\bY)=\sum_{i=1}^nX_iY_i/V_n,\quad V_n=\sqrt{Y_1^2+...+Y_n^2}. $$ These rates are seen to hold for the convergence of a number of important statistics, such as for instance Student's $t$-statistic or the empirical correlation coefficient.
Robbins' problem of optimal stopping asks one to minimise the expected {\it rank} of observation chosen by some nonanticipating stopping rule. We settle a conjecture regarding the {\it value} of the stopped variable under the rule optimal in the sense of the rank, by embedding the problem in a much more general context of selection problems with the nonanticipation constraint lifted, and with the payoff growing like a power function of the rank.
We prove abstract bounds on the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances between non-randomly centered random sums of real i.i.d. random variables with a finite third moment and the standard normal distribution. Except for the case of mean zero summands, these bounds involve a coupling of the summation index with its size biased distribution as was previously considered in \cite{GolRin96} for the normal approximation of nonnegative random variables. When being specialized to concrete distributions of the summation index like the Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distribution, our bounds turn ou…
Let $\{\bf \mathcal{Z}_n:n\geq 1\}$ be a sequence of i.i.d. random probability measures. Independently, for each $n\geq 1$, let $(X_{n1},\ldots, X_{nn})$ be a random vector of positive random variables that add up to one. This paper studies the large deviation principles for the randomly weighted sum $\sum_{i=1}^{n} X_{ni} \mathcal{Z}_i$. In the case of finite Dirichlet weighted sum of Dirac measures, we obtain an explicit form for the rate function. It provides a new measurement of divergence between probabilities. As applications, we obtain the large deviation principles for a class of rando…
Let $v_1$, $v_2$, ..., $v_n$ be real numbers whose squares add up to 1. Consider the $2^n$ signed sums of the form $S = \sum \pm v_i$. Boppana and Holzman (2017) proved that at least 13/32 of these sums satisfy $|S| \le 1$. Here we improve their bound to $0.427685$.
We prove the following conjecture, due to Tomaszewski (1986): Let $X= \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_{i} x_{i}$, where $\sum_i a_i^2=1$ and each $x_i$ is a uniformly random sign. Then $\Pr[|X|\leq 1] \geq 1/2$. Our main novel tools are local concentration inequalities and an improved Berry-Esseen inequality for Rademacher sums.
Let $v_1$, $v_2$, ..., $v_n$ be real numbers whose squares add up to 1. Consider the $2^n$ signed sums of the form $S = \sum \pm v_i$. Holzman and Kleitman (1992) proved that at least 3/8 of these sums satisfy $|S| \le 1$. This 3/8 bound seems to be the best their method can achieve. Using a different method, we improve the bound to 13/32, thus breaking the 3/8 barrier.
We prove limit theorems for sums of randomly chosen random variables conditioned on the summands. We consider several versions of the corner growth setting, including specific cases of dependence amongst the summands and summands with heavy tails. We also prove a version of Hoeffding's combinatorial central limit theorem and results for summands taken uniformly from a random sample. These results are proved with concentration of measure techniques.
Initially motivated by the study of the non-asymptotic properties of non-parametric tests based on permutation methods, concentration inequalities for uniformly permuted sums have been largely studied in the literature. Recently, Delyon et al. proved a new Bernstein-type concentration inequality based on martingale theory. This work presents a new proof of this inequality based on the fundamental inequalities for random permutations of Talagrand. The idea is to first obtain a rough inequality for the square root of the permuted sum, and then, iterate the previous analysis and plug this first i…
Two approaches are suggested to the definition of asymmetric generalized Weibull distribution. These approaches are based on the representation of the two-sided Weibull distributions as variance-mean normal mixtures or more general scale-location mixtures of the normal laws. Since both of these mixtures can be limit laws in limit theorems for random sums of independent random variables, these approaches can provide additional arguments in favor of asymmetric two-sided Weibull-type models of statistical regularities observed in some problems related to stopped random walks, in particular, in pr…
A set A=A_{k,n} in [n]\cup{0} is said to be an additive k-basis if each element in {0,1,...,kn} can be written as a k-sum of elements of A in at least one way. Seeking multiple representations as k-sums, and given any function phi(n), with lim(phi(n))=infinity, we say that A is a truncated phi(n)-representative k-basis for [n] if for each j in [alpha n, (k-alpha)n] the number of ways that j can be represented as a k-sum of elements of A_{k,n} is Theta(phi(n)). In this paper, we follow tradition and focus on the case phi(n)=log n, and show that a randomly selected set in an appropriate probabil…
We consider distributional approximation by generalized Dickman distributions, which appear in number theory, perpetuities, logarithmic combinatorial structures and many other areas. We prove bounds in the Kolmogorov distance for the approximation of certain weighted sums of Bernoulli and Poisson random variables by members of this family. While such results have previously been shown in Bhattacharjee and Goldstein (2019) for distances based on smoother test functions and for a special case of the random variables considered in this paper, results in the Kolmogorov distance are new. We also es…
For the renormalised sums of the random $\pm 1$-colouring of the connected components of $\mathbb Z$ generated by the coalescing renewal processes in the "power law Pólya's urn" of Hammond and Sheffield we prove functional convergence towards fractional Brownian motion, closing a gap in the tightness argument of their paper. In addition, in the regime of the strong renewal theorem we gain insights into the coalescing renewal processes in the Hammond-Sheffield urn (such as the asymptotic depth of most recent common ancestors) and are able to control the coalescence probabilities of two, three a…
Let $\{X_t, t \geq 1\}$ be a sequence of identically distributed and pairwise asymptotically independent random variables with regularly varying tails and $\{ Θ_t, t\geq1 \}$ be a sequence of positive random variables independent of the sequence $\{X_t, t \geq 1\}$. We shall discuss the tail probabilities and almost sure convergence of $\xinf=\sum_{t=1}^{\infty}Θ_t X_t^{+}$ (where $X^+=\max\{0,X\}$) and $\max_{1\leq k<\infty} \sum_{t=1}^{k}Θ_t X_t$ and provide some sufficient conditions motivated by Denisov and Zwart (2007) as alternatives to the usual moment conditions. In particular, we illu…
We prove a version of a general transfer theorem for random sequences with independent random indexes in the double array limit setting under relaxed conditions. We also prove its partial inverse providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of randomly indexed random sequences. Special attention is paid to the case where the elements of the basic double array are formed as cumulative sums of independent not necessarily identically distributed random variables. Using simple moment-type conditions we prove the theorem on convergence of the distributions of such sums to n…
We generalise the Erdos-Renyi limit theorem on the maximum of the partial sums of random variables to the case when the number of terms in these sums is randomly distributed. Certain relations between the limiting theorems of this type and the spectral theory of random graphs and random matrices are discussed.

We consider smoothing equations of the form $$X ~\stackrel{\mathrm{law}}{=}~ \sum_{j \geq 1} T_j X_j + C$$ where $(C,T_1,T_2,\ldots)$ is a given sequence of random variables and $X_1,X_2,\ldots$ are independent copies of $X$ and independent of the sequence $(C,T_1,T_2,\ldots)$. The focus is on complex smoothing equations, i.e., the case where the random variables $X, C,T_1,T_2,\ldots$ are complex-valued, but also more general multivariate smoothing equations are considered, in which the $T_j$ are similarity matrices. Under mild assumptions on $(C,T_1,T_2,\ldots)$, we describe the laws of all r…
The long-term behavior of a supercritical branching random walk can be described and analyzed with the help of Biggins' martingales, parametrized by real or complex numbers. The study of these martingales with complex parameters is a rather recent topic. Assuming that certain sufficient conditions for the convergence of the martingales to non-degenerate limits hold, we investigate the fluctuations of the martingales around their limits. We discover three different regimes. First, we show that for parameters with small absolute values, the fluctuations are Gaussian and the limit laws are scale …
This paper obtains an asymptotic formula for the finite-time ruin probability of the compound nonhomogeneous Poisson risk model with a constant interest force, in which the claims are conditionally independent random variables with a common subexponential distribution. The paper also obtains some asymptotic relations of randomly weighted sums $\sum_{i=1}^n θ_iX_i$, in which the weights $θ_i$ $i=1,2,\cdots, n$ are positive random variables which are bounded above and the primary random variables $X_i$, $i=1,2,\cdots,n$ are conditionally independent and follow subexponential distributions.
We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-normalized CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the …
We consider quadratic Weyl sums $S_N(x;c,α)=\sum_{n=1}^N\exp\{2πi((\frac{1}{2}n^2+cn)x+αn)\}$ for $c=α=0$ (the rational case) or $(c,α)\notin\mathbb{Q}^2$ (the irrational case), where $x$ is randomly distributed according to a probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The limiting distribution in the complex plane of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}S_N(x;c,α)$ as $N\to\infty$ was described by Marklof [13] (respectively Cellarosi and Marklof [5]) in the rational (resp. irrational) case. According to the limiting distribution, the probability of landing outside a ball of…
Suppose $Λ$ is a discrete infinite set of nonnegative real numbers. We say that $ Λ$ is type $2$ if the series $s(x)=\sum_{λ\inΛ}f(x+λ)$ does not satisfy a zero-one law. This means that we can find a non-negative measurable "witness function" $f: {\mathbb R}\to [0,+ {\infty})$ such that both the convergence set $C(f, Λ)=\{x: s(x)<+ {\infty} \}$ and its complement the divergence set $D(f, Λ)=\{x: s(x)=+ {\infty} \}$ are of positive Lebesgue measure. If $ Λ$ is not type $2$ we say that $ Λ$ is type $1$. The main result of our paper answers a question raised by Z. Buczolich, J-P. Kahane, and D. M…
We consider quadratic Weyl sums $S_N(x;α,β)=\sum_{n=1}^N \exp\!\left[2πi\left( \left(\tfrac{1}{2}n^2+βn\right)\!x+αn\right)\right]$ for $(α,β)\in\mathbb{Q}^2$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}$ is randomly distributed according to a probability measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We prove that the limiting distribution in the complex plane of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}S_N(x;α,β)$ as $N\to\infty$ is either heavy tailed or compactly supported, depending solely on $α,β$. In the heavy tailed case, the probability (according to the limiting distribution) of landing outside a ball of r…
A surprising result of Pillai and Meng (2016) showed that a transformation $\sum_{j=1}^n w_j X_j/Y_j$ of two iid centered normal random vectors, $(X_1,\ldots, X_n)$ and $(Y_1,\ldots, Y_n)$, $n>1$, for any weights $0\leq w_j\leq 1$, $ j=1,\ldots, n$, $\sum_{j=1}^n w_j=1$, has a Cauchy distribution regardless of any correlations within the normal vectors. The correlations appear to lose out in the competition with the heavy tails. To clarify how extensive this phenomenon is, we analyze two other transformations of two iid centered normal random vectors. These transformations are similar in spiri…
