We establish a second order smooth variational principle valid for functions defined on (possibly infinite-dimensional) Riemannian manifolds which are uniformly locally convex and have a strictly positive injectivity radius and bounded sectional curvature.
Conformally variational Riemannian invariants (CVIs), such as the scalar curvature, are homogeneous scalar invariants which arise as the gradient of a Riemannian functional. We establish a wide range of stability and rigidity results involving CVIs, generalizing many such results for the scalar curvature.
The objet of this paper is the study of variations of a functional whose integrant is the $σ_u$-curvature of closed submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in Riemannian manifolds.
The objet of this paper is the study of the variations of a functional whose integrant is the r-th weighted curvature on the hypersurface of a closed Riemannian manifold. Some applications to hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space and the unit round sphère are given.
We present a method for proving the existence of solutions to a class of one dimensional variational problems. The method is demonstrated by two examples of optimal interpolation problems which are motivated by engineering applications. In each case we prove that the variational problem satisfies the Palais-Smale condition and the existence of a minimal solution and lower bounds for the number of stationary curves then follow.
We study variational problems for integral invariants, which are defined as integrations of invariant functions of the second fundamental form, of a smooth map between pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. We derive the first variational formulae for integral invariants defined from invariant homogeneous polynomials of degree two. Among these integral invariants, we show that the Euler-Lagrange equation of the Chern-Federer energy functional is reduced to a second order PDE. Then we give some examples of Chern-Federer submanifolds in Riemannian space forms.
We show that for every Lipschitz function $f$ defined on a separable Riemannian manifold $M$ (possibly of infinite dimension), for every continuous $ε:M\to (0,+\infty)$, and for every positive number $r>0$, there exists a $C^\infty$ smooth Lipschitz function $g:M\to\mathbb{R}$ such that $|f(p)-g(p)|\leqε(p)$ for every $p\in M$ and $\textrm{Lip}(g)\leq\textrm{Lip}(f)+r$. Consequently, every separable Riemannian manifold is uniformly bumpable. We also present some applications of this result, such as a general version for separable Riemannian manifolds of Deville-Godefroy-Zizler's smooth variati…
We prove a generalized version of the Morse index theorem for geodesics endowed with a non positive definite metric tensor (semi-Riemannian manifolds). We apply the result to obtain lower estimates on the number of geodesics joining two fixed non conjugate points in certain classes of manifolds. More specifically, we consider semi-Riemannian manifolds $(M,\mathfrak g)$ admitting a smooth distribution spanned by commuting Killing vector fields and containing a maximal negative distribution for $\mathfrak$. In particular we obtain Morse relations for stationary semi-Riemannian manifolds and for …
This paper studies a variational obstacle avoidance problem on complete Riemannian manifolds. That is, we minimize an action functional, among a set of admissible curves, which depends on an artificial potential function used to avoid obstacles. In particular, we generalize the theory of bi-Jacobi fields and biconjugate points and present necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality. Local minimizers of the action functional are divided into two categories and subsequently classified, with local uniqueness results obtained in both cases.
The space of all Riemannian metrics on a smooth second countable finite dimensional manifold is itself a smooth manifold modeled on the space of symmetric (0,2)-tensor fields with compact support. It carries a canonical Riemannian metric which is invariant under the action of the diffeomorphism group. We determine its geodesics, exponential mapping, curvature, and Jacobi fields in a very explicit manner.
Given two Jordan curves in a Riemannian manifold, a minimal surface of annulus type bounded by these curves is described as the harmonic extension of a critical point of some functional (the Dirichlet integral) in a certain space of boundary parametrizations. The $H^{2,2}$-regularity of the minimal surface of annulus type will be proved by applying the critical points theory and Morrey's growth condition.
We study the existence and properties of metrics maximising the first Laplace eigenvalue among conformal metrics of unit volume on Riemannian surfaces. We describe a general approach to this problem and its higher eigenvalue versions via the direct method of calculus of variations. The principal results include the general regularity properties of $λ_k$-extremal metrics and the existence of a partially regular $λ_1$-maximiser.
Geodesics become an essential element of the geometry of a semi-Riemannian manifold. In fact, their differences and similarities with the (positive definite) Riemannian case, constitute the first step to understand semi-Riemannian Geometry. The progress in the last two decades has become impressive, being especially relevant the systematic introduction of (infinite-dimensional) variational methods. Our purpose is to give an overview, from refinements of classical results to updated variational settings. First, several properties (and especially completeness) of geodesics in some ambient spaces…
Let $M^n$ be a complete, non-compact and $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold with nonnegative sectional curvature. Suppose $\Cal S$ is a soul of $M^n$. Then any distance non-increasing retraction $Ψ: M^n \to \Cal S$ must give rise to a $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian submersion.
We establish new existence and non-existence results for positive solutions of the Einstein-scalar field Lichnerowicz equation on compact manifolds. This equation arises from the Hamiltonian constraint equation for the Einstein-scalar field system in general relativity. Our analysis introduces variational techniques, in the form of the mountain pass lemma, to the analysis of the Hamiltonian constraint equation, which has been previously studied by other methods.
We construct a natural co-Riemannian structure on the manifold of smooth loops in a Riemannian manifold. We show that the smooth loop space of a string manifold is a per-Hilbert-Schmidt locally equivalent co-spin manifold and thus admits a Dirac operator.
In this paper we introduce a new approach to variational problems on the space Riem(M^n) of Riemannian structures (i.e. isometry classes of Riemannan metrics) on any fixed compact manifold M^n of dimension n >= 5. This approach often enables one to replace the considered variational problem on Riem(M^n) (or on some subset of Riem(M^n)) by the same problem but on spaces Riem(N^n) for every manifold N^n from a class of compact manifolds of the same dimension and with the same homology as M^n but with the following two useful properties: (1) If νis any Riemannian structure on any manifold N^n fro…
We show how to define a canonical Riemannian metric on a "dessin d'enfants' drawn on a topological surface. This gives a possible explanation of a claim of A. Grothendieck.

Under the assumption of the uniform local Sobolev inequality, it is proved that Riemannian metrics with an absolute Ricci curvature bound and a small Riemannian curvature integral bound can be smoothed to having a sectional curvature bound. This partly extends previous a priori estimates of Ye Li (J. Geom. Anal. 17 (2007) 495-511; Advances in Mathematics 223 (2010) 1924-1957).
In this paper, we investigate a class of quadratic Riemannian curvature functionals on closed smooth manifold $M$ of dimension $n\ge 3$ on the space of Riemannian metrics on $M$ with unit volume. We study the stability of these functionals at the metric with constant sectional curvature as its critical point.
We show that any generalised smooth distribution on a smooth manifold, possibly of non-constant rank, admits a Riemannian metric. Using such a metric, we attach a Laplace operator to any smooth distribution as such. When the underlying manifold is compact, we show that it is essentially self-adjoint. Viewing this Laplacian in the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of the smallest singular foliation which includes the distribution, we prove hypoellipticity.
We study the local geometry of the space of horizontal curves with endpoints freely varying in two given submanifolds $\mathcal P$ and $\mathcal Q$ of a manifold $\mathcal M$ endowed with a distribution $\mathcal D\subset T\M$. We give a different proof, that holds in a more general context, of a result by Bismut (Large Deviations and the Malliavin Calculus, Birkhauser, 1984) stating that the normal extremizers that are not abnormal are critical points of the sub-Riemannian action functional. We use the Lagrangian multipliers method in a Hilbert manifold setting, which leads to a characterizat…
J.Eells and L. Lemaire introduced $k$-harmonic maps, and Wang Shaobo showed the first variation formula. In this paper, we give the second variation formula of $k$-energy, and give a notion of index, nullity and weakly stable. We also study $k$-harmonic maps into the product Riemannian manifold, and $k$-harmonic curves into a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature, and show their non-trivial solutions.
For a regular sub-Riemannian manifold we study the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the spherical Hausdorff measure with respect to a smooth volume. We prove that this is the volume of the unit ball in the nilpotent approximation and it is always a continuous function. We then prove that up to dimension 4 it is smooth, while starting from dimension 5, in corank 1 case, it is C^3 (and C^4 on every smooth curve) but in general not C^5. These results answer to a question addressed by Montgomery about the relation between two intrinsic volumes that can be defined in a sub-Riemannian manifold, namely th…
We construct a decomposition of the identity operator on a Riemannian manifold $M$ as a sum of smooth orthogonal projections subordinate to an open cover of $M$. This extends a decomposition of the real line by smooth orthogonal projection due to Coifman, Meyer and Auscher, Weiss, Wickerhauser, and a similar decomposition when $M$ is the sphere by the first two authors.
Let M be a differentiable manifold. We say that a tensor field g defined on M is non-regular if g is in some local Lp space or if g is continuous. In this work we define a mollifier smoothing g_t of g that has the following feature: If g is a Riemannian metric of class C2, then the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor of g_t converges to the Levi-Civita connection and to the Riemannian curvature tensor of g respectively as t converges to zero. Therefore this mollifier smoothing is a good starting point in order to generalize objects of the classical Riemannian geometry to…
By means of a general gluing and conformal-deformation construction, we prove that any smooth, metrically complete Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary can be realized as a closed domain into a smooth, geodesically complete Riemannan manifold without boundary. Applications to Sobolev spaces, Nash embedding and local extensions with strict curvature bounds are presented.
Manifold-valued data naturally arises in medical imaging. In cognitive neuroscience, for instance, brain connectomes base the analysis of coactivation patterns between different brain regions on the analysis of the correlations of their functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) time series - an object thus constrained by construction to belong to the manifold of symmetric positive definite matrices. One of the challenges that naturally arises consists of finding a lower-dimensional subspace for representing such manifold-valued data. Traditional techniques, like principal component analysis…
The curvature discussed in this paper is a rather far going generalization of the Riemannian sectional curvature. We define it for a wide class of optimal control problems: a unified framework including geometric structures such as Riemannian, sub-Riemannian, Finsler and sub-Finsler structures; a special attention is paid to the sub-Riemannian (or Carnot-Caratheodory) metric spaces. Our construction of the curvature is direct and naive, and it is similar to the original approach of Riemann. Surprisingly, it works in a very general setting and, in particular, for all sub-Riemannian spaces.
J.Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and T. Ichiyama, J. Inoguchi and H.Urakawa showed the first variation formula. In this paper, we give the second variation formula of k-harmonic maps, and show non-existence theorem of proper k-harmonic maps into a Riemannian manifold of non-positive curvature (k >= 2). We also study k-harmonic maps into the product Riemannian manifold, and describe the ordinary differential equations of 3-harmonic curves and 4-harmonic curves into a sphere, and show their non-trivial solutions.
We extend the methods of Davis-Januszkiewicz-Lafont to provide a new obstruction to smooth Riemannian metric with non-positive sectional curvature. We construct examples of locally CAT(0) 4-manifolds $M$, whose universal covers satisfy isolated flats condition and contain 2-dimensional flats with the property that $\sqcup\ \partial^\infty F_i \hookrightarrow \partial^\infty \tilde M$ are non-trivial links that are not isotopic to any great circle link. Further, all the flats in $\tilde M$ are unknotted at infinity, and yet $M$ does not have a Riemannian smoothing.
We prove that an isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold admits a resolution preserving the transverse geometry if and only if the action is infinitesimally polar. We provide applications concerning topological simplicity of several classes of isometric actions, including polar and variationally complete ones. All results are proven in the more general case of singular Riemannian foliations.
The key condition A3w of Ma, Trudinger and Wang for regularity of optimal transportation maps is implied by the nonnegativity of a pseudo-Riemannian curvature -- which we call cross-curvature -- induced by the transportation cost. For the Riemannian distance squared cost, it is shown that (1) cross-curvature nonnegativity is preserved for products of two manifolds; (2) both A3w and cross-curvature nonnegativity are inherited by Riemannian submersions; and (3) the $n$-dimensional round sphere satisfies cross-curvature nonnegativity. From these results, a large new class of Riemannian manifolds …
Given a closed hyperbolic Riemannian surface, the aim of the present paper is to describe an explicit construction of smooth deformations of the hyperbolic metric into Finsler metrics that are not Riemannian and whose properties are such that the classical Riemannian results about entropy rigidity, marked length spectrum rigidity and boundary rigidity all fail to extend to the Finsler category.
Given a metrically complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth nonempty boundary and assuming that one of its curvatures is subject to a certain bound, we address the problem of whether it is possibile to realize $(M,g)$ as a domain inside a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold $(M',g')$ without boundary, by preserving the same curvature bounds. In this direction we provide three kind of results: (1) a general existence theorem showing that it is always possible to obtain a geodesically complete Riemannian extension without curvature constraints; (2) various topological obstructions …
We consider modified scalar curvature functions for Riemannian manifolds equipped with smooth measures. Given a Riemannian submersion whose fiber transport is measure-preserving up to constants, we show that the modified scalar curvature of the base is bounded below in terms of the scalar curvatures of the total space and fibers. We give an application concerning the scalar curvature of a smooth limit space arising in a bounded curvature collapse.
Let M be a smooth compact manifold without boundary. We consider two smooth Sub-Semi-Riemannian metrics on M. Under suitable conditions, we show that they are almost conformally isometric in an Lp sense. Assume also that M carries a Riemannian metric with parallel Ricci curvature. Then an equation of Ricci type, is in some sense solvable, without assuming any closeness near a special metric.
In this paper we study the main geometric properties of the Carnot-Carathéodory (abbreviated CC) distance $\dc$ in the setting of $k$-step sub-Riemannian Carnot groups from many different points of view. An extensive study of the so-called normal CC-geodesics is given. We state and prove some related variational formulae and we find suitable Jacobi-type equations for normal CC-geodesics. One of our main results is a sub-Riemannian version of the Gauss Lemma. We show the existence of the metric normal for smooth non-characteristic hypersurfaces. We also compute the sub-Riemannian exponential ma…
We formulate stochastic partial differential equations on Riemannian manifolds, moving surfaces, general evolving Riemannian manifolds (with appropriate assumptions) and Riemannian manifolds with random metrics, in the variational setting of the analysis to stochastic partial differential equations. Considering mainly linear stochastic partial differential equations, we establish various existence and uniqueness theorems.
In this paper, we consider generic corank 2 sub-Riemannian structures, and we show that the Spherical Hausdorf measure is always a C^1-smooth volume, which is in fact generically C^2- smooth out of a stratified subset of codimension 7. In particular, for rank 4, it is generically C^2 . This is the continuation of a previous work by the auhors.
We prove here that given a proper isometric action $K\times M\to M$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ then every continuous isometric flow on the orbit space $M/K$ is smooth, i.e., it is the projection of an $K$-equivariant smooth flow on the manifold $M$. As a direct corollary we infer the smoothness of isometric actions on orbit spaces. Another relevant application of our result concerns Molino's conjecture, which states that the partition of a Riemannian manifold into the closures of the leaves of a singular Riemannian foliation is still a singular Riemannian foliation. We prove Molino'…
This note treats the notion of Lagrange derivative for the third order mechanics in the context of covariant Riemannian geometry. The variational differential equation for geodesic circles in two dimensions is obtained. The influence of the curvature tensor on the Lagrange derivative leads to the emergence of the notion of quasiclassical spin in the pseudo-Riemannian case.
We construct examples of smooth 4-dimensional manifolds M supporting a locally CAT(0)-metric, whose universal cover X satisfy Hruska's isolated flats condition, and contain 2-dimensional flats F with the property that the boundary at infinity of F defines a nontrivial knot in the boundary at infinity of X. As a consequence, we obtain that the fundamental group of M cannot be isomorphic to the fundamental group of any Riemannian manifold of nonpositive sectional curvature. In particular, M is a locally CAT(0)-manifold which does not support any Riemannian metric of nonpositive sectional curvatu…
We define a new formal Riemannian metric on a conformal class in the context of the $v_{\frac{n}{2}}$-Yamabe problem. Our construction leads to a new variational characterization and a new parabolic flow approach to this problem. Moreover, this variational framework suggests that solutions to this problem are unique in a given conformal class.
The variational theory of higher-power energy is developed for mappings between Riemannian manifolds, and more generally sections of submersions of Riemannian manifolds, and applied to sections of Riemannian vector bundles and their sphere subbundles. A complete classification is then given for left-invariant vector fields on 3-dimensional unimodular Lie groups equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant Riemannian metric.
We show that the travel time difference functions, measured on the boundary, determine a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary up to Riemannian isometry, if boundary satisfies a certain visibility condition. This corresponds with the inverse microseismicity problem. The novelty of our paper is a new type of a proof and a weaker assumption for the boundary than it has been presented in the literature before. We also construct an explicit smooth atlas from the travel time difference functions.
