This paper deals with the construction of a correlation decay tree (hypertree) for interacting systems modeled using graphs (hypergraphs) that can be used to compute the marginal probability of any vertex of interest. Local message passing equations have been used for some time to approximate the marginal probabilities in graphs but it is known that these equations are incorrect for graphs with loops. In this paper we construct, for any finite graph and a fixed vertex, a finite tree with appropriately defined boundary conditions so that the marginal probability on the tree at the vertex matches that on the graph. For several interacting systems, we show using our approach that if there is very strong spatial mixing on an infinite regular tree, then one has strong spatial mixing for any given graph with maximum degree bounded by that of the regular tree. Thus we identify the regular tree as the worst case graph, in a weak sense, for the notion of strong spatial mixing.
It has been claimed in Aldous, Miermont and Pitman [PTRF, 2004] that all Lévy trees are mixings of inhomogeneous continuum random trees. We give a rigorous proof of this claim in the case of a stable branching mechanism, relying on a new procedure for recovering the tree distance from the graphical spanning trees that works simultaneously for stable trees and inhomogeneous continuum random trees.
We consider correlation decay in the hard-core model with fugacity $λ$ on a rooted tree $T$ in which the arity of each vertex is independently Poisson distributed with mean $d$. Specifically, we investigate the question of which parameter settings $(d, λ)$ result in strong spatial mixing, weak spatial mixing, or neither. (In our context, weak spatial mixing is equivalent to Gibbs uniqueness.) For finite fugacity, a zero-one law implies that these spatial mixing properties hold either almost surely or almost never, once we have conditioned on whether $T$ is finite or infinite. We provide a part…
The genealogy at a single locus of a constant size $N$ population in equilibrium is given by the well-known Kingman's coalescent. When considering multiple loci under recombination, the ancestral recombination graph encodes the genealogies at all loci in one graph. For a continuous genome $G$, we study the tree-valued process $(T^N_u)_{u\in G}$ of genealogies along the genome in the limit $N\to\infty$. Encoding trees as metric measure spaces, we show convergence to a tree-valued process with cadlag paths. In addition, we study mixing properties of the resulting process for loci which are far a…
We define an analog of Plancherel measure for the set of rooted unlabeled trees on n vertices, and a Markov chain which has this measure as its stationary distribution. Using the combinatorics of commutation relations, we show that order n^2 steps are necessary and suffice for convergence to the stationary distribution.
We investigate the problem of strong spatial mixing of $q$-colorings on Bethe lattices. By analyzing the sum-product algorithm we establish the strong spatial mixing of $q$-colorings on $(b+1)$-regular Bethe lattices, for $q \geq 1+\lceil 1.764b \rceil$. We also establish the strong spatial mixing of $q$-colorings on binary trees, for $q=4$.
The mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for spin systems on trees is closely related to reconstruction problem. Martinelli, Sinclair and Weitz established this correspondence for a class of spin systems with soft constraints bounding the log-Sobolev constant by a comparison with the block dynamics. However, when there are hard constraints, the block dynamics may be reducible. We introduce a variant of the block dynamics extending these results to a wide class of spin systems with hard constraints. This applies for essentially any spin system that has non-reconstruction provided that on average…
We prove that critical multitype Galton-Watson trees converge after rescaling to the Brownian continuum random tree, under the hypothesis that the offspring distribution has finite covariance matrices. Our study relies on an ancestral decomposition for marked multitype trees. We then couple the genealogical structure with a spatial motion, whose step distribution may depend on the structure of the tree in a local way, and show that the resulting discrete spatial trees converge once suitably rescaled to the Brownian snake, under some suitable moment assumptions.
We prove that the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics for random k-colorings of the complete tree with branching factor b undergoes a phase transition at $k=b(1+o_b(1))/\ln{b}$. Our main result shows nearly sharp bounds on the mixing time of the dynamics on the complete tree with n vertices for $k=Cb/\ln{b}$ colors with constant C. For $C\geq1$ we prove the mixing time is $O(n^{1+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$. On the other side, for $C<1$ the mixing time experiences a slowing down; in particular, we prove it is $O(n^{1/C+o_b(1)}\ln{n})$ and $Ω(n^{1/C-o_b(1)})$. The critical point C=1 is interesting since it…
We give the first comprehensive analysis of the effect of boundary conditions on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics in the so-called Bethe approximation. Specifically, we show that spectral gap and the log-Sobolev constant of the Glauber dynamics for the Ising model on an n-vertex regular tree with plus-boundary are bounded below by a constant independent of n at all temperatures and all external fields. This implies that the mixing time is O(log n) (in contrast to the free boundary case, where it is not bounded by any fixed polynomial at low temperatures). In addition, our methods yield …
Is there a constant $r_0$ such that, in any invariant tree network linking rate-$1$ Poisson points in the plane, the mean within-network distance between points at Euclidean distance $r$ is infinite for $r > r_0$? We prove a slightly weaker result. This is a continuum analog of a result of Benjamini et al (2001) on invariant spanning trees of the integer lattice.
It has been shown by van den Berg and Steif that the sub-critical and critical Ising model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is a finitary factor of an i.i.d. process (ffiid), whereas the super-critical model is not. In fact, they showed that the latter is a general phenomenon in that a phase transition presents an obstruction for being ffiid. The question remained whether this is the only such obstruction. We make progress on this, showing that certain spatial mixing conditions (notions of weak dependence on boundary conditions, not to be confused with other notions of mixing in ergodic theory) imply ffiid. …
We consider Galton-Watson trees associated with a critical offspring distribution and conditioned to have exactly $n$ vertices. These trees are embedded in the real line by affecting spatial positions to the vertices, in such a way that the increments of the spatial positions along edges of the tree are independent variables distributed according to a symmetric probability distribution on the real line. We then condition on the event that all spatial positions are nonnegative. Under suitable assumptions on the offspring distribution and the spatial displacements, we prove that these conditione…
On the rooted $k$-ary tree we consider a 0-1 kinetically constrained spin model in which the occupancy variable at each node is re-sampled with rate one from the Bernoulli(p) measure iff all its children are empty. For this process the following picture was conjectured to hold. As long as $p$ is below the percolation threshold $p_c=1/k$ the process is ergodic with a finite relaxation time while, for $p>p_c$, the process on the infinite tree is no longer ergodic and the relaxation time on a finite regular sub-tree becomes exponentially large in the depth of the tree. At the critical point $p=p_…
The Swendsen-Wang algorithm is a sophisticated, widely-used Markov chain for sampling from the Gibbs distribution for the ferromagnetic Ising and Potts models. This chain has proved difficult to analyze, due in part to the global nature of its updates. We present optimal bounds on the convergence rate of the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the complete $d$-ary tree. Our bounds extend to the non-uniqueness region and apply to all boundary conditions. We show that the spatial mixing conditions known as Variance Mixing and Entropy Mixing, introduced in the study of local Markov chains by Martinelli e…
Consider the interchange process on a connected graph $G=(V,E)$ on $n$ vertices. I.e.\ shuffle a deck of cards by first placing one card at each vertex of $G$ in a fixed order and then at each tick of the clock, picking an edge uniformly at random and switching the two cards at the end vertices of the edge with probability 1/2. Well known special cases are the random transpositions shuffle, where $G$ is the complete graph, and the transposing neighbors shuffle, where $G$ is the $n$-path. Other cases that have been studied are the $d$-dimensional grid, the hypercube, lollipop graphs and Erd\H o…
We prove some asymptotic results for the radius and the profile of large random bipartite planar maps. Using a bijection due to Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter between rooted bipartite planar maps and certain two-type trees with positive labels, we derive our results from a conditional limit theorem for two-type spatial trees. Finally we apply our estimates to separating vertices of bipartite planar maps: with probability close to one when $n$ goes to infinity, a random $2\ka$-angulation with $n$ faces has a separating vertex whose removal disconnects the map into two components each with s…
In the heat-bath Glauber dynamics for the Ising model on the lattice, physicists believe that the spectral gap of the continuous-time chain exhibits the following behavior. For some critical inverse-temperature $β_c$, the inverse-gap is bounded for $β< β_c$, polynomial in the surface area for $β= β_c$ and exponential in it for $β> β_c$. This has been proved for $\Z^2$ except at criticality. So far, the only underlying geometry where the critical behavior has been confirmed is the complete graph. Recently, the dynamics for the Ising model on a regular tree, also known as the Bethe lattice, has …
We survey recent developments about random real trees, whose prototype is the Continuum Random Tree (CRT) introduced by Aldous in 1991. We briefly explain the formalism of real trees, which yields a neat presentation of the theory and in particular of the relations between discrete Galton-Watson trees and continuous random trees. We then discuss the particular class of self-similar random real trees called stable trees, which generalize the CRT. We review several important results concerning stable trees, including their branching property, which is analogous to the well-known property of Galt…
It is natural to expect that nonbacktracking random walk will mix faster than simple random walks, but so far this has only been proved in regular graphs. To analyze typical irregular graphs, let $G$ be a random graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree 3 and a degree distribution that has exponential tails. We determine the precise worst-case mixing time for simple random walk on $G$, and show that, with high probability, it exhibits cutoff at time $\mathbf{h}^{-1} \log n$, where $\mathbf{h}$ is the asymptotic entropy for simple random walk on a Galton--Watson tree that approximates $G$ local…

We present a perfect marginal sampler of the unique Gibbs measure of a spin system on $\mathbb Z^2$. The algorithm is an adaptation of a previous `lazy depth-first' approach by the authors, but relaxes the requirement of strong spatial mixing to weak. It exploits a classical result in statistical physics relating weak spatial mixing on $\mathbb Z^2$ to strong spatial mixing on squares. When the spin system exhibits weak spatial mixing, the run-time of our sampler is linear in the size of sample. Applications of note are the ferromagnetic Potts model at supercritical temperatures, and the ferro…
In the context of stationary $\mathbb{Z}^d$ nearest-neighbour Gibbs measures $μ$ satisfying strong spatial mixing, we present a new combinatorial condition (the topological strong spatial mixing property (TSSM)) on the support of $μ$ sufficient for having an efficient approximation algorithm for topological pressure. We establish many useful properties of TSSM for studying strong spatial mixing on systems with hard constraints. We also show that TSSM is, in fact, necessary for strong spatial mixing to hold at high rate. Part of this work is an extension of results obtained by D. Gamarnik and D…
This paper establishes the asymptotic normality of frequency polygons in the context of stationary strongly mixing random fields indexed by $\Z^d$. Our method allows us to consider only minimal conditions on the width bins and provides a simple criterion on the mixing coefficients. In particular, we improve in several directions a previous result by Carbon, Francq and Tran (2010).
We present a simple algorithm that perfectly samples configurations from the unique Gibbs measure of a spin system on a potentially infinite graph $G$. The sampling algorithm assumes strong spatial mixing together with subexponential growth of $G$. It produces a finite window onto a perfect sample from the Gibbs distribution. The run-time is linear in the size of the window.
For general antiferromagnetic 2-spin systems, including the hardcore model and the antiferromagnetic Ising model, there is an $\mathsf{FPTAS}$ for the partition function on graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ when the infinite regular tree lies in the uniqueness region by Li et al. (2013). Moreover, in the tree non-uniqueness region, Sly (2010) showed that there is no $\mathsf{FPRAS}$ to estimate the partition function unless $\mathsf{NP}=\mathsf{RP}$. The algorithmic results follow from the correlation decay approach due to Weitz (2006) or the polynomial interpolation approach developed by Barvinok …
We give a systematic development of the application of matrix norms to rapid mixing in spin systems. We show that rapid mixing of both random update Glauber dynamics and systematic scan Glauber dynamics occurs if any matrix norm of the associated dependency matrix is less than 1. We give improved analysis for the case in which the diagonal of the dependency matrix is $\mathbf{0}$ (as in heat bath dynamics). We apply the matrix norm methods to random update and systematic scan Glauber dynamics for coloring various classes of graphs. We give a general method for estimating a norm of a symmetric …
We consider spin systems in the $d$-dimensional lattice $Z^d$ satisfying the so-called strong spatial mixing condition. We show that the relative entropy functional of the corresponding Gibbs measure satisfies a family of inequalities which control the entropy on a given region $V\subset Z^d$ in terms of a weighted sum of the entropies on blocks $A\subset V$ when each $A$ is given an arbitrary nonnegative weight $α_A$. These inequalities generalize the well known logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the Glauber dynamics. Moreover, they provide a natural extension of the classical Shearer inequal…
For a general attractive Probabilistic Cellular Automata on S Z d , we prove that the (time-) convergence towards equilibrium of this Markovian parallel dynamics, exponentially fast in the uniform norm, is equivalent to a condition (A). This condition means the exponential decay of the inuence from the boundary for the invariant measures of the system restricted to nite boxes. For a class of reversible PCA dynamics on {--1, +1} Z d , with a naturally associated Gibbsian potential $φ$, we prove that a (spatial-) weak mixing condition (WM) for $φ$ implies the validity of the assumption (A); thus…
Given a countable graph $\mathcal{G}$ and a finite graph $\mathrm{H}$, we consider $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathcal{G},\mathrm{H})$ the set of graph homomorphisms from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathrm{H}$ and we study Gibbs measures supported on $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathcal{G},\mathrm{H})$ . We develop some sufficient and other necessary conditions on $\mathrm{Hom}(\mathcal{G},\mathrm{H})$ for the existence of Gibbs specifications satisfying strong spatial mixing (with exponential decay rate). We relate this with previous work of Brightwell and Winkler, who showed that a graph $\mathrm{H}$ has a combinatorial proper…
The property of spatial mixing and strong spatial mixing in spin systems has been of interest because of its implications on uniqueness of Gibbs measures on infinite graphs and efficient approximation of counting problems that are otherwise known to be #P hard. In the context of coloring, strong spatial mixing has been established for regular trees when $q \geq α^{*} Δ+ 1$ where $q$ the number of colors, $Δ$ is the degree and $α^* = 1.763..$ is the unique solution to $xe^{-1/x} = 1$. It has also been established for bounded degree lattice graphs whenever $q \geq α^* Δ- β$ for some constant $β$…
The Glauber dynamics on the colourings of a graph is a random process which consists in recolouring at each step a random vertex of a graph with a new colour chosen uniformly at random among the colours not already present in its neighbourhood. It is known that when the total number of colours available is at least $Δ+2$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph, this process converges to a uniform distribution on the set of all the colourings. Moreover, a well known conjecture is that the time it takes for the convergence to happen, called the mixing time, is polynomial in the size of the…
We prove an optimal $Ω(n^{-1})$ lower bound for modified log-Sobolev (MLS) constant of the Glauber dynamics for anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems with $n$ vertices in the tree uniqueness regime. Specifically, this optimal MLS bound holds for the following classes of two-spin systems in the tree uniqueness regime: $\bullet$ all strictly anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems (where both edge parameters $β,γ<1$), which cover the hardcore models and the anti-ferromagnetic Ising models; $\bullet$ general anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems on regular graphs. Consequently, an optimal $O(n\log n)$ mi…
We establish rapid mixing of the random-cluster Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs for all $q\ge 1$ and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, where the threshold $p_u(q,Δ)$ corresponds to a uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition for the random-cluster model on the (infinite) $Δ$-regular tree. It is expected that this threshold is sharp, and for $q>2$ the Glauber dynamics on random $Δ$-regular graphs undergoes an exponential slowdown at $p_u(q,Δ)$. More precisely, we show that for every $q\ge 1$, $Δ\ge 3$, and $p<p_u(q,Δ)$, with probability $1-o(1)$ over the choice of a random $Δ$-regular graph on $n$ v…
Max-mixture processes are defined as Z = max(aX, (1 -- a)Y) with X an asymptotic dependent (AD) process, Y an asymptotic independent (AI) process and a $\in$ [0, 1]. So that, the mixing coefficient a may reveal the strength of the AD part present in the max-mixture process. In this paper we focus on two tests based on censored pairwise likelihood estimates. We compare their performance through an extensive simulation study. Monte Carlo simulation plays a fundamental tool for asymptotic variance calculations. We apply our tests to daily precipitations from the East of Australia. Drawbacks and p…
One of the main concerns in extreme value theory is to quantify the dependence between joint tails. Using stochastic processes that lack flexibility in the joint tail may lead to severe under-or over-estimation of probabilities associated to simultaneous extreme events. Following recent advances in the literature, a flexible model called max-mixture model has been introduced for modeling situations where the extremal dependence structure may vary with the distance. In this paper we propose a nonparametric model-free selection criterion for the mixing coefficient Our criterion is derived from a…
We prove an optimal mixing time bound on the single-site update Markov chain known as the Glauber dynamics or Gibbs sampling in a variety of settings. Our work presents an improved version of the spectral independence approach of Anari et al. (2020) and shows $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time on any $n$-vertex graph of bounded degree when the maximum eigenvalue of an associated influence matrix is bounded. As an application of our results, for the hard-core model on independent sets weighted by a fugacity $λ$, we establish $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time for the Glauber dynamics on any $n$-vertex graph of c…
Recently, Holmes and Perkins identified conditions which ensure that for a class of critical lattice models the scaling limit of the range is the range of super-Brownian motion. One of their conditions is an estimate on a spatial moment of order higher than four, which they verified for the sixth moment for spread-out lattice trees in dimensions $d>8$. Chen and Sakai have proved the required moment estimate for spread-out critical oriented percolation in dimensions $d+1>4+1$. We prove estimates on all moments for the spread-out critical contact process in dimensions $d>4$, which in particular …
The Swendsen-Wang dynamics is a popular algorithm for sampling from the Gibbs distribution for the ferromagnetic Ising model on a graph $G=(V,E)$. The dynamics is a "global" Markov chain which is conjectured to converge to equilibrium in $O(|V|^{1/4})$ steps for any graph $G$ at any (inverse) temperature $β$. It was recently proved by Guo and Jerrum (2017) that the Swendsen-Wang dynamics has polynomial mixing time on any graph at all temperatures, yet there are few results providing $o(|V|)$ upper bounds on its convergence time. We prove fast convergence of the Swendsen-Wang dynamics on genera…
We prove that a Gibbs point process interacting via a finite-range, repulsive potential $ϕ$ exhibits a strong spatial mixing property for activities $λ< e/Δ_ϕ$, where $Δ_ϕ$ is the potential-weighted connective constant of $ϕ$, defined recently in [MP21]. Using this we derive several analytic and algorithmic consequences when $λ$ satisfies this bound: (1) We prove new identities for the infinite volume pressure and surface pressure of such a process (and in the case of the surface pressure establish its existence). (2) We prove that local block dynamics for sampling from the model on a box of v…
