In this paper we determine the percolation threshold for an arbitrary sequence of dense graphs $(G_n)$. Let $λ_n$ be the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G_n$, and let $G_n(p_n)$ be the random subgraph of $G_n$ obtained by keeping each edge independently with probability $p_n$. We show that the appearance of a giant component in $G_n(p_n)$ has a sharp threshold at $p_n=1/λ_n$. In fact, we prove much more: if $(G_n)$ converges to an irreducible limit, then the density of the largest component of $G_n(c/n)$ tends to the survival probability of a multi-type branching process defined in terms of this limit. Here the notions of convergence and limit are those of Borgs, Chayes, Lovász, Sós and Vesztergombi. In addition to using basic properties of convergence, we make heavy use of the methods of Bollobás, Janson and Riordan, who used multi-type branching processes to study the emergence of a giant component in a very broad family of sparse inhomogeneous random graphs.
We study the percolation time of the $r$-neighbour bootstrap percolation model on the discrete torus $(\Z/n\Z)^d$. For $t$ at most a polylog function of $n$ and initial infection probabilities within certain ranges depending on $t$, we prove that the percolation time of a random subset of the torus is exactly equal to $t$ with high probability as $n$ tends to infinity. Our proof rests crucially on three new extremal theorems that together establish an almost complete understanding of the geometric behaviour of the $r$-neighbour bootstrap process in the dense setting. The special case $d-r=0$ o…
In r-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the vertex set of a graph G, vertices are initially infected independently with some probability p. At each time step, the infected set expands by infecting all uninfected vertices that have at least r infected neighbours. We study the distribution of the time t at which all vertices become infected. Given t = t(n) = o(log n/log log n), we prove a sharp threshold result for the probability that percolation occurs by time t in d-neighbour bootstrap percolation on the d-dimensional discrete torus T_n^d. Moreover, we show that for certain ranges of p = p(n)…
We study the two most common types of percolation process on a sparse random graph with a given degree sequence. Namely, we examine first a bond percolation process where the edges of the graph are retained with probability p and afterwards we focus on site percolation where the vertices are retained with probability p. We establish critical values for p above which a giant component emerges in both cases. Moreover, we show that in fact these coincide. As a special case, our results apply to power law random graphs. We obtain rigorous proofs for formulas derived by several physicists for such …
Two infinite 0-1 sequences are called compatible when it is possible to cast out 0's from both in such a way that they become complementary to each other. Answering a question of Peter Winkler, we show that if the two 0-1-sequences are random i.i.d. and independent from each other, with probability p of 1's, then if p is sufficiently small they are compatible with positive probability. The question is equivalent to a certain dependent percolation with a power-law behavior: the probability that the origin is blocked at distance n but not closer decreases only polynomially fast and not, as usual…
We investigate the problem of embedding infinite binary sequences into Bernoulli site percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with parameter $p$, known also as percolation of words.\ In 1995, I.\ Benjamini and H.\ Kesten proved that, for $d \geq 10$ and $p=1/2$, all sequences can be embedded, almost surely. They conjectured that the same should hold for $d \geq 3$. In this paper we consider $d \geq 3$ and $p \in (p_c(d), 1-p_c(d))$, where $p_c(d)<1/2$ is the critical threshold for site percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We show that there exists an integer $M = M (p)$, such that, a.s., every binary sequence…
We compare the probabilities of arm events in two-dimensional invasion percolation to those in critical percolation. Arm events are defined by the existence of a prescribed color sequence of invaded and non-invaded connections from the origin to distance n. We find that, for sequences of a particular form, arm probabilities in invasion percolation and critical percolation are comparable, uniformly in n, while they differ by a power of n for all others. A corollary of our results is the existence, on the triangular lattice, of arm exponents for invasion percolation, for any color sequence with …
We consider bond percolation on random graphs with given degrees and bounded average degree. In particular, we consider the order of the largest component after the random deletion of the edges of such a random graph. We give a rough characterisation of those degree distributions for which bond percolation with high probability leaves a component of linear order, known usually as a giant component. We show that essentially the critical condition has to do with the tail of the degree distribution. Our proof makes use of recent technique introduced by Joos et al. [FOCS 2016, pp. 695--703], which…
The peeling process, which describes a step-by-step exploration of a planar map, has been instrumental in addressing percolation problems on random infinite planar maps. Bond and face percolation on maps with faces of arbitrary degree are conveniently studied via so-called lazy-peeling explorations. During such explorations distinct vertices on the exploration contour may at later stage be identified, making the process less suited to the study of site percolation. To tackle this situation and to explicitly identify site-percolation thresholds, we come back to the alternative "simple" peeling …
A new Berry-Esseen bound for non-linear functionals of non-symmetric and non-homogeneous infinite Rademacher sequences is established. It is based on a discrete version of the Malliavin-Stein method and an analysis of the discrete Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup. The result is applied to sub-graph counts and to the number of vertices having a prescribed degree in the Erdős-Renyi random graph. A further application deals with a percolation problem on trees.
We study site percolation on a sequence of graphs $\{G_n\}_{n\geq1}$ on $n$ vertices where degree of each vertex is in the interval $(np -a_n, np+a_n)$ and the co-degree of every pair of vertices is at most ${n}p^2+ b_n$, where $p \in (0,1)$ and $\{a_n\}_{n\geq1}$, $\{b_n\}_{n\geq1}$ are sequences of real numbers. Under suitable conditions on $p \in (0,1)$, $a_n$'s and $b_n$'s we show that site percolation on these sequences of graphs undergo a sharp phase transition at $\frac{1}{np}$. More precisely for $\varepsilon>0$, we form a random set $R(ρ_n)$ by including each vertex of $G_n$ independe…
We study the locality of critical percolation on finite graphs: let $G_n$ be a sequence of finite graphs, converging locally weakly to a (random, rooted) infinite graph $G$. Consider Bernoulli edge percolation: does the critical probability for the emergence of an infinite component on $G$ coincide with the critical probability for the emergence of a linear-sized component on $G_n$? In this short article we give a positive answer provided the graphs $G_n$ satisfy an expansion condition, and the limiting graph $G$ has finite expected root degree. The main result of Benjamini, Nachmias, and Pere…
We have generalized the idea of backbend in a nearest-neighbor oriented bond percolation process by considering a backbend sequence $β: \mathbb{Z}_+ \to \mathbb{Z}_+ \cup \{\infty\}$, and defining a $β$-backbend path from the origin as a path that never retreats further than $β(h)$ levels back from its record level $h$. We study the relationship between the critical probabilities of different percolation processes based on different backbend sequences on half-space, full-space, and half-slabs of the $d$-dimensional ($d \geq 2$) body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice. We also give sufficient conditi…
We study bond percolation on the Hamming hypercube {0,1}^m around the critical probability p_c. It is known that if p=p_c(1+O(2^{-m/3})), then with high probability the largest connected component C_1 is of size Theta(2^{2m/3}) and that this quantity is non-concentrated. Here we show that for any sequence eps_m such that eps_m=o(1) but eps_m >> 2^{-m/3} percolation on the hypercube at p_c(1+eps_m) has |C_1| = (2+o(1)) eps_m 2^m and |C_2| = o(eps_m 2^m) with high probability, where C_2 is the second largest component. This resolves a conjecture of Borgs, Chayes, the first author, Slade and Spen…
We study the random graph obtained by random deletion of vertices or edges from a random graph with given vertex degrees. A simple trick of exploding vertices instead of deleting them, enables us to derive results from known results for random graphs with given vertex degrees. This is used to study existence of giant component and existence of k-core. As a variation of the latter, we study also bootstrap percolation in random regular graphs. We obtain both simple new proofs of known results and new results. An interesting feature is that for some degree sequences, there are several or even inf…
The Euclidean first-passage percolation model of Howard and Newman is a rotationally invariant percolation model built on a Poisson point process. It is known that the passage time between 0 and $ne_1$ obeys a diffusive upper bound: $\mbox{Var}\, T(0,ne_1) \leq Cn$, and in this paper we improve this inequality to $Cn/\log n$. The methods follow the strategy used for sublinear variance proofs on the lattice, using the Falik-Samorodnitsky inequality and a Bernoulli encoding, but with substantial technical difficulties. To deal with the different setup of the Euclidean model, we represent the pas…
Let G_n be a sequence of finite transitive graphs with vertex degree d=d(n) and |G_n|=n. Denote by p^t(v,v) the return probability after t steps of the non-backtracking random walk on G_n. We show that if p^t(v,v) has quasi-random properties, then critical bond-percolation on G_n has a scaling window of width n^{-1/3}, as it would on a random graph. A consequence of our theorems is that if G_n is a transitive expander family with girth at least (2/3 + eps) \log_{d-1} n, then the size of the largest component in p-bond-percolation with p={1 +O(n^{-1/3}) \over d-1} is roughly n^{2/3}. In particu…
We extend Smirnov's proof of the existence and conformal invariance of the scaling limit of critical site-percolation on the triangular lattice to particular sequences of periodic graphs with more arbitrary large-scale structure, obtained by piecing together triangular regions of the triangular lattice. While not formally speaking a scaling limit statement (as the graphs are not rescaled versions of each other), the result is a weak form of universality for critical percolation.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ denote a collection of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, and assign independent random variables uniformly distributed over $[0,1]$ to the $n$ elements. Declare an element $p$-present if its corresponding value is at most $p$. In this paper, we quantify how much the observation of the $r$-present ($r>p$) set of elements affects the probability that the set of $p$-present elements is contained in $\mathcal{H}$. In the context of percolation, we find that this question is closely linked to the near-critical regime. As a consequence, we show that for every $r>1/2$, bond percolation…
We prove non-universality results for first-passage percolation on the configuration model with i.i.d. degrees having infinite variance. We focus on the weight of the optimal path between two uniform vertices. Depending on the properties of the weight distribution, we use an example-based approach and show that rather different behaviors are possible. When the weights are a.s. larger than a constant, the weight and number of edges in the graph grow proportionally to loglog(n), as for the graph distances. On the other hand, when the continuous-time branching process describing the first passage…
We discuss duality properties of critical Boltzmann planar maps such that the degree of a typical face is in the domain of attraction of a stable distribution with parameter $α\in(1,2]$. We consider the critical Bernoulli bond percolation model on a Boltzmann map in the dilute and generic regimes $α\in (3/2,2]$, and show that the open percolation cluster of the origin is itself a Boltzmann map in the dense regime $α\in (1,3/2)$, with parameter \[α':= \frac{2α+3}{4α-2}.\] This is the counterpart in random planar maps of the duality property $κ\leftrightarrow 16/κ$ of Schramm-Loewner Evolutions …
We present a coupled decreasing sequence of random walks on $ \mathbb Z $ that dominates the edge process of oriented-bond percolation in two dimensions. Using the concept of "random walk in a strip ", we construct an algorithm that generates an increasing sequence of lower bounds that converges to the critical probability of oriented-bond percolation. Numerical calculations of the first ten lower bounds thereby generated lead to an improved,i.e. higher, rigorous lower bound to this critical probability, viz. $p_{c} \geq 0.63328 $. Finally a computer simulation technique is presented; the use …

We show that the local weak limit of a sequence of finite expander graphs with uniformly bounded degree is an ergodic (or extremal) unimodular random graph. In particular, the critical probability of percolation of the limiting random graph is constant almost surely. As a corollary, we obtain an improvement to a theorem by Benjamini-Nachmias-Peres (2011) on locality of percolation probability for finite expander graphs with uniformly bounded degree where we can drop the assumption that the limit is a single rooted graph.
In majority bootstrap percolation on a graph G, an infection spreads according to the following deterministic rule: if at least half of the neighbours of a vertex v are already infected, then v is also infected, and infected vertices remain infected forever. Percolation occurs if eventually every vertex is infected. The elements of the set of initially infected vertices, A \subset V(G), are normally chosen independently at random, each with probability p, say. This process has been extensively studied on the sequence of torus graphs [n]^d, for n = 1,2,..., where d = d(n) is either fixed or a v…
It is an open problem to show that in two-dimensional first-passage percolation, the sequence of finite geodesics from any point to $(n,0)$ has a limit in $n$. In this paper, we consider this question for first-passage percolation on a wide class of subgraphs of $\mathbb {Z}^2$: those whose vertex set is infinite and connected with an infinite connected complement. This includes, for instance, slit planes, half-planes and sectors. Writing $x_n$ for the sequence of boundary vertices, we show that the sequence of geodesics from any point to $x_n$ has an almost sure limit assuming only existence …
Consider percolation on the triangular lattice. Let $κ(p)$ be the free energy at the zero field. We show that $$|κ'''(p)| \leq |p-p_c|^{-1/3+o(1)} \mbox{ if } p \neq p_c.$$ Furthermore, we show that there exists a sequence $ε_n\downarrow 0$ such that $$|κ'''(p_c\pm ε_n)|\geq ε_n^{-1/3+o(1)}.$$ This answers affirmatively a conjecture, asked by Sykes and Essam a half century ago, whether $κ(p)$ has a singularity at the criticality.
Let $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of transitive infinite connected graphs with $\sup\limits_{n\geq 1} p_c(G_n) < 1,$ where each $p_c(G_n)$ is bond percolation critical probability on $G_n.$ Schramm (2008) conjectured that if $G_n$ converges locally to a transitive infinite connected graph $G,$ then $p_c(G_n) \rightarrow p_c(G)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty.$ We prove the conjecture when $G$ satisfies two rough uniformities, and $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly nonamenable.
We generalize and improve results of Andrews, Gravner, Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik on metastability thresholds for generalized two-dimensional bootstrap percolation models, and answer several of their open problems and conjectures. Specifically, we prove slow convergence and localization bounds for Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik's k-percolation models, and in the process provide a unified and improved treatment of existing results for bootstrap, modified bootstrap, and Frobose percolation. Furthermore, we prove improved asymptotic bounds for the generating functions of partitions without k-gaps, …
The sequence of random probability measures $ν_n$ that gives a path of length $n$, $\unsur{n}$ times the sum of the random weights collected along the paths, is shown to satisfy a large deviations principle with good rate function the Legendre transform of the free energy of the associated directed polymer in a random environment. Consequences on the asymptotics of the typical number of paths whose collected weight is above a fixed proportion are then drawn.
We study a random graph $G$ with given degree sequence $\boldsymbol{d}$, with the aim of characterising the degree sequence of the subgraph induced on a given set $S$ of vertices. For suitable $\boldsymbol{d}$ and $S$, we show that the degree sequence of the subgraph induced on $S$ is essentially concentrated around a sequence that we can deterministically describe in terms of $\boldsymbol{d}$ and $S$. We then give an application of this result, determining a threshold for when this induced subgraph contains a giant component. We also apply a similar analysis to the case where $S$ is chosen by…
Random graphs have played an instrumental role in modelling real-world networks arising from the internet topology, social networks, or even protein-interaction networks within cells. Percolation, on the other hand, has been the fundamental model for understanding robustness and spread of epidemics on these networks. From a mathematical perspective, percolation is one of the simplest models that exhibits phase transition, and fascinating features are observed around the critical point. In this thesis, we prove limit theorems about structural properties of the connected components obtained from…
This paper focuses on the asymptotic behaviors of the length of the largest 1-cluster in a finite iid Bernoulli sequence. We first reveal a critical phenomenon on the length and then study its limit distribution.

Fractal percolation has been introduced by Mandelbrot in 1974. We study the two-dimensional case, with integer subdivision index M and survival probability p. It is well known that there exists a non-trivial critical value p_c(M) such that a.s. the largest connected component in the limiting set K is a point for p<p_c(M) and with positive probability there is a connected component intersecting opposite sides of the unit square for p\geq p_c(M). For all M\geq 2, the value of p_c(M) is unknown. In this paper we present ideas to find lower and upper bounds, significantly sharper than those alread…
We construct an edge-weight distribution for i.i.d. first-passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ whose limit shape is not a polygon and whose extreme points are arbitrarily dense in the boundary. Consequently, the associated Richardson-type growth model can support coexistence of a countably infinite number of distinct species, and the graph of infection has infinitely many ends.
We prove limit theorems and variance estimates for quantities related to ponds and outlets for 2D invasion percolation. We first exhibit several properties of a sequence $({\mathbf{O}}(n))$ of outlet variables, the $n$th of which gives the number of outlets in the box centered at the origin of side length $2^n$. The most important of these properties describes the sequence's renewal structure and exponentially fast mixing behavior. We use these to prove a central limit theorem and strong law of large numbers for $({\mathbf{O}}(n))$. We then show consequences of these limit theorems for the pon…
We consider the standard first passage percolation model in the rescaled lattice $\mathbb Z^d/n$ for $d\geq 2$ and a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb R^d$. We denote by $Γ^1$ and $Γ^2$ two disjoint subsets of $\partial Ω$ representing respectively the sources and the sinks, \textit{i.e.}, where the water can enter in $Ω$ and escape from $Ω$. A cutset is a set of edges that separates $Γ^1$ from $Γ^2$ in $Ω$, it has a capacity given by the sum of the capacities of its edges. Under some assumptions on $Ω$ and the distribution of the capacities of the edges, we already know a law of large numbers fo…
We obtain tight thresholds for bond percolation on one-dimensional small-world graphs, and apply such results to obtain tight thresholds for the \emph{Independent Cascade} process and the \emph{Reed-Frost} process in such graphs. These are the first fully rigorous results establishing a phase transition for bond percolation and SIR epidemic processes in small-world graphs. Although one-dimensional small-world graphs are an idealized and unrealistic network model, a number of realistic qualitative epidemiological phenomena emerge from our analysis, including the epidemic spread through a sequen…
We continue the study of infinite geodesics in planar first-passage percolation, pioneered by Newman in the mid 1990s. Building on more recent work of Hoffman, and Damron and Hanson, we develop an ergodic theory for infinite geodesics via the study of what we shall call `random coalescing geodesics'. Random coalescing geodesics have a range of nice asymptotic properties, such as asymptotic directions and linear Busemann functions. We show that random coalescing geodesics are (in some sense) dense in the space of geodesics. This allows us to extrapolate properties from random coalescing geodesi…
We study the growth of two competing infection types on graphs generated by the configuration model with a given degree sequence. Starting from two vertices chosen uniformly at random, the infection types spread via the edges in the graph in that an uninfected vertex becomes type 1 (2) infected at rate $λ_1$ ($λ_2$) times the number of nearest neighbors of type 1 (2). Assuming (essentially) that the degree of a randomly chosen vertex has finite second moment, we show that if $λ_1=λ_2$, then the fraction of vertices that are ultimately infected by type 1 converges to a continuous random variabl…
We study a discrete Laplace operator $Δ$ on percolation subgraphs of an infinite graph. The ball volume is assumed to grow at most polynomially. We are interested in the behavior of the integrated density of states near the lower spectral edge. If the graph is a Cayley graph we prove that it exhibits Lifshitz tails. If we merely assume that the graph has an exhausting sequence with positive $δ$-dimensional density, we obtain an upper bound on the integrated density of states of Lifshitz type.
First-passage percolation is a random growth model which has a metric structure. An infinite geodesic is an infinite sequence whose all sub-sequences are shortest paths. One of the important quantity is the number of infinite geodesics originating from the origin. When $d=2$ and an edge distribution is continuous, it is proved to be almost surely constant [D. Ahlberg, C. Hoffman. Random coalescing geodesics in first-passage percolation]. In this paper, we will prove the same result for higher dimensions and general distributions.
We consider the bond percolation model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\ge 2$) with the constraint to be fully connected. Each edge is open with probability $p\in(0,1)$, closed with probability $1-p$ and then the process is conditioned to have a unique open connected component (bounded or unbounded). The model is defined on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by passing to the limit for a sequence of finite volume models with general boundary conditions. Several questions and problems are investigated: existence, uniqueness, phase transition, DLR equations. Our main result involves the existence of a threshold $0…
We consider the Erdös--Rényi random graph $G_{n,p}$ and we analyze the simple irreversible epidemic process on the graph, known in the literature as bootstrap percolation. We give a quantitative version of some results by Janson et al. (2012), providing a fine asymptotic analysis of the final size $A_n^*$ of active nodes, under a suitable super-critical regime. More specifically, we establish large deviation principles for the sequence of random variables $\{\frac{n- A_n^*}{f(n)}\}_{n\geq 1}$ with explicit rate functions and allowing the scaling function $f$ to vary in the widest possible rang…
In the present paper I consider Cayley graphs of reflection groups of finite-sided Coxeter polyhedra in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space H^3, with standard sets of generators. As the main result, I prove the existence of non-trivial non-uniqueness phase of bond and site Bernoulli percolation on such graphs, i.e. that p_c < p_u, for two classes of such polyhedra: * for any k-hedra as above with k at least 13; * for any compact right-angled polyhedra as above. I also establish a natural lower bound for the growth rate of such Cayley graphs (when the number of faces of the polyhedron is at least 6;…
The lilypond model on a point process in $d$-space is a growth-maximal system of non-overlapping balls centred at the points. We establish central limit theorems for the total volume and the number of components of the lilypond model on a sequence of Poisson or binomial point processes on expanding windows. For the lilypond model over a homogeneous Poisson process, we give subexponentially decaying tail bounds for the size of the cluster at the origin. Finally, we consider the enhanced Poisson lilypond model where all the balls are enlarged by a fixed amount (the enhancement parameter), and sh…
Let $\{Y_{\mathfrak{B}}(x)\,:\,x\in\mathfrak{B}\}$ be a discrete Gaussian free field in a two-dimensional box $\mathfrak{B}$ of side length $S$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We study Liouville first-passage percolation: the shortest-path metric in which each vertex $x$ is given a weight of $e^{γY_{\mathfrak{B}}(x)}$ for some $γ>0$. We show that for sufficiently small but fixed $γ>0$, for any sequence of scales $\{S_{k}\}$ there exists a subsequence along which the appropriately scaled and interpolated Liouville FPP metric converges in the Gromov--Hausdorff sense to a random metric on the…
We investigate generalisations of the classical percolation critical probabilities $p_c$, $p_T$ and the critical probability $\tilde{p_c}$ defined by Duminil-Copin and Tassion (2015) to bounded degree unimodular random graphs. We further examine Schramm's conjecture in the case of unimodular random graphs: does $p_c(G_n)$ converge to $p_c(G)$ if $G_n\to G$ in the local weak sense? Among our results are the following: 1. $p_c=\tilde{p_c}$ holds for bounded degree unimodular graphs. However, there are unimodular graphs with sub-exponential volume growth and $p_T < p_c$; i.e., the classical sharp…
This paper focuses on the time constant for last passage percolation on complete graph. Let $G_n=([n],E_n)$ be the complete graph on vertex set $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, and i.i.d. sequence $\{X_e:e\in E_n\}$ be the passage times of edges. Denote by $W_n$ the largest passage time among all self-avoiding paths from 1 to $n$. First, it is proved that $W_n/n$ converges to constant $μ$, where $μ$ is called the time constant and coincides with the essential supremum of $X_e$. Second, when $μ<\infty$, it is proved that the deviation probability $P(W_n/n\leq μ-x)$ decays as fast as $e^{-Θ(n^2)}$, and a…
We consider the standard first passage percolation in $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ for $d\geq 2$ and we denote by $ϕ_{n^{d-1},h(n)}$ the maximal flow through the cylinder $]0,n]^{d-1} \times ]0,h(n)]$ from its bottom to its top. Kesten proved a law of large numbers for the maximal flow in dimension three: under some assumptions, $ϕ_{n^{d-1},h(n)} / n^{d-1}$ converges towards a constant $ν$. We look now at the probability that $ϕ_{n^{d-1},h(n)} / n^{d-1}$ is greater than $ν+ ε$ for some $ε>0$, and we show under some assumptions that this probability decays exponentially fast with the volume of the cylinder…
