For certain random variables that arise as limits of functionals of random finite trees, we obtain precise asymptotics for the logarithm of the right-hand tail. Our results are based on the facts (i) that the random variables we study can be represented as functionals of a Brownian excursion and (ii) that a large deviation principle with good rate function is known explicitly for Brownian excursion. Examples include limit distributions of the total path length and of the Wiener index in conditioned Galton-Watson trees (also known as simply generated trees). In the case of Wiener index (where we recover results proved by Svante Janson and Philippe Chassaing by a different method) and for some other examples, a key constant is expressed as the solution to a certain optimization problem, but the constant's precise value remains unknown.
We study how well moments of sums of independent symmetric random variables with logarithmically concave tails may be approximated by moments of Gaussian random variables.
We derive two-sided estimates for random multilinear forms (random chaoses) generated by independent symmetric random variables with logarithmically concave tails. Estimates are exact up to multiplicative constants depending only on the order of chaos.
We present two-sided estimates of moments and tails of polynomial chaoses of order at most three generated by independent symmetric random variables with log-concave tails as well as for chaoses of arbitrary order generated by independent symmetric exponential variables. The estimates involve only deterministic quantities and are optimal up to constants depending only on the order of the chaos variable.
We consider autoregressive sequences $X_n=aX_{n-1}+ξ_n$ and $M_n=\max\{aM_{n-1},ξ_n\}$ with a constant $a\in(0,1)$ and with positive, independent and identically distributed innovations $\{ξ_k\}$. It is known that if $\mathbf P(ξ_1>x)\sim\frac{d}{\log x}$ with some $d\in(0,-\log a)$ then the chains $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ are null recurrent. We investigate the tail behaviour of recurrence times in this case of logarithmically decaying tails. More precisely, we show that the tails of recurrence times are regularly varying of index $-1-d/\log a$. We also prove limit theorems for $\{X_n\}$ and $\…
In this paper we show under weak assumptions that for $R\stackrel{d}{=}1+M_1+M_1M_2+\ldots$, where $P(M\in[0,1])=1$ and $M_i$ are independent copies of $M$, we have $\ln P(R>x)\sim C\, x\ln P(M>1-\frac1x)$ as $x\to\infty$. The constant $C$ is given explicitly and its value depends on the rate of convergence of $\ln P(M>1-\frac1x)$. Random variable $R$ satisfies the stochastic equation $R\stackrel{d}{=}1+MR$ with $M$ and $R$ independent, thus this result fits into the study of tails of iterated random equations, or more specifically, of perpetuities.
This note gives a proof of an improved upper bound for the right-side tail of a distribution discussed in "Crossover Distributions at the Edge of the Rarefaction Fan" by Ivan Corwin and Jeremy Quastel.
Cramer's theorem provides an estimate for the tail probability of the maximum of a random walk with negative drift and increments having a moment generating function finite in a neighborhood of the origin. The class of (g,F)-processes generalizes in a natural way random walks and fractional ARIMA models used in time series analysis. For those (g,F)-processes with negative drift, we obtain a logarithmic estimate of the tail probability of their maximum, under conditions comparable to Cramer's. Furthermore, we exhibit the most likely paths as well as the most likely behavior of the innovations l…
The Tracy-Widom beta distribution is the large dimensional limit of the top eigenvalue of beta random matrix ensembles. We use the stochastic Airy operator representation to show that as a tends to infinity the tail of the Tracy Widom distribution satisfies P(TW_beta > a) = a^(-3/4 beta+o(1)) exp(-2/3 beta a^(3/2)).
We study moderate deviations in the exponential corner growth model, both in the bulk setting and the increment-stationary setting. The main results are sharp right-tail bounds on the last-passage time and the exit point of the increment-stationary process. The arguments utilize calculations with the stationary version and a moment generating function identity due to E. Rains, for which we give a short probabilistic proof. As applications of the deviation bounds, we derive upper bounds on the speed of distributional convergence in the Busemann function and competition interface limits.
When we use the entropy method to get the tail bounds, typically the left tail bounds are not good comparing with the right ones. Up to now this asymmetry has been observed many times. Surprisingly we find an entropy method for the left tail that works in the exactly same way that it works for the right tail.
Following results of Kemperman and Pinelis, we show that if $X$ and $Y$ are real valued random variables such that $\mathbb{E}\left\vert Y\right\vert<\infty$ and for all non-decreasing convex $φ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow [0,\infty)$, $\mathbb{E}φ(X)\leq\mathbb{E}φ(Y)$, then for all $s\in\mathbb{R}$ with $\mathbb{P}\left\{Y>s\right\}\neq 0$, $\mathbb{P}\left\{X\geq\mathbb{E}\left(Y:Y>s\right)\right\}\leq\mathbb{P}\left\{Y>s\right\}$. This bound is sharp in essentially the strictest possible sense: for any such $Y$ and $s$ there exists such an $X$ with $\mathbb{P}\left\{X\geq \mathbb{E}\left(Y:Y>s\r…
We prove logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and concentration results for convex functions and a class of product random vectors. The results are used to derive tail and moment inequalities for chaos variables (in spirit of Talagrand and Arcones, Gine). We also show that the same proof may be used for chaoses generated by log-concave random variables, recovering results by Lochowski and present an application to exponential integrability of Rademacher chaos.
It has been shown by Ibragimov and Zaporozhets [In Prokhorov and Contemporary Probability Theory (2013) Springer] that the complex roots of a random polynomial $G_n(z)=\sum_{k=0}^nξ_kz^k$ with i.i.d. coefficients $ξ_0,\ldots,ξ_n$ concentrate a.s. near the unit circle as $n\to\infty$ if and only if ${\mathbb{E}\log_+}|ξ_0|<\infty$. We study the transition from concentration to deconcentration of roots by considering coefficients with tails behaving like $L({\log}|t|)({\log}|t|)^{-α}$ as $t\to\infty$, where $α\geq0$, and $L$ is a slowly varying function. Under this assumption, the structure of c…
We provide exact large-time equivalents of the density and upper tail distributions of the exponential functional of a subordinator in terms of its Laplace exponents. This improves previous results on the logarithmic asymptotic behaviour of the upper tail. Since the results in their general form remain rather abstract, we study some fairly common situations in details to see how the behavior near 0 of the Lévy measure of the subordinator influences the asymptotics of the density and upper tail distributions. Several examples of applications are then discussed.
We substantially refine asymptotic logarithmic upper bounds produced by Svante Janson (2015) on the right tail of the limiting QuickSort distribution function $F$ and by Fill and Hung (2018) on the right tails of the corresponding density $f$ and of the absolute derivatives of $f$ of each order. For example, we establish an upper bound on $\log[1 - F(x)]$ that matches conjectured asymptotics of Knessl and Szpankowski (1999) through terms of order $(\log x)^2$; the corresponding order for the Janson (2015) bound is the lead order, $x \log x$. Using the refined asymptotic bounds on $F$, we deriv…
Branching Processes in a Random Environment (BPREs) $(Z_n:n\geq0)$ are a generalization of Galton Watson processes where in each generation the reproduction law is picked randomly in an i.i.d. manner. We determine here the upper large deviation of the process when the reproduction law may have heavy tails. The behavior of BPREs is related to the associated random walk of the environment, whose increments are distributed like the logarithmic mean of the offspring distributions. We obtain an expression of the upper rate function of $(Z_n:n\geq0)$, that is the limit of $-\log \mathbb{P}(Z_n\geq e…
We consider a random matrix whose entries are independent Gaussian variables taking values in the field of quaternions with variance $1/n$. Using logarithmic potential theory, we prove the almost sure convergence, as the dimension $n$ goes to infinity, of the empirical distribution of the right eigenvalues towards some measure supported on the unit ball of the quaternions field. Some comments on more general Gaussian quaternionic random matrix models are also made.
Suppose that $(Z_n)_{n\geq0}$ is a supercritical branching process in independent and identically distributed random environment. The right tail function of the scaled growth rate for $(Z_n)_{n\geq0}$ is studied. The upper bounds for $\displaystyle\mathbb{P}\left[\frac{\log Z_n}{Mn}-μ\geq x\right]$ for any $x\geq3$ are obtained, by applying an extension of the Hoeffding type inequalities.
Several Brownian areas are considered in this paper: the Brownian excursion area, the Brownian bridge area, the Brownian motion area, the Brownian meander area, the Brownian double meander area, the positive part of Brownian bridge area, the positive part of Brownian motion area. We are interested in the asymptotics of the right tail of their density function. Inverting a double Laplace transform, we can derive, in a mechanical way, all terms of an asymptotic expansion. We illustrate our technique with the computation of the first four terms. We also obtain asymptotics for the right tail of th…
Let $\boldsymbol W=\{\boldsymbol W_n:n\in\mathbb N\}$ be a sequence of random vectors in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 1$. This paper considers the logarithmic asymptotics of the extremes of $\boldsymbol W$, that is, for any vector $\boldsymbol q>\boldsymbol 0$ in $\mathbb R^d$, we find $$\log\mathbb P\left(\exists{n\in\mathbb N}:\boldsymbol W_n> u \boldsymbol q\right), \quad\text{as} u\to\infty.$$ We follow the approach of the restricted large deviation principle introduced in Duffy et al. \textit{Logarithmic asymptotics for the supremum of a stochastic process} (Ann. Appl. Probab., 13:430--445, 2003)…
We show that the naive mean-field approximation correctly predicts the leading term of the logarithmic lower tail probabilities for the number of copies of a given subgraph in $G(n,p)$ and of arithmetic progressions of a given length in random subsets of the integers in the entire range of densities where the mean-field approximation is viable. Our main technical result provides sufficient conditions on the maximum degrees of a uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ that guarantee that the logarithmic lower tail probabilities for the number of edges induced by a binomial random subset of the vertice…
We determine the rate of decrease of the right tail distribution of the exponential functional of a Levy process with a convolution equivalent Levy measure. Our main result establishes that it decreases as the right tail of the image under the exponential function of the Levy measure of the underlying Levy process. The method of proof relies on fluctuation theory of Levy processes and an explicit path-wise representation of the exponential functional as the exponential functional of a bivariate subordinator. Our techniques allow us to establish rather general estimates of the measure of the ex…
In the context of communication networks, the framework of stochastic event graphs allows a modeling of control mechanisms induced by the communication protocol and an analysis of its performances. We concentrate on the logarithmic tail asymptotics of the stationary response time for a class of networks that admit a representation as (max,plus)-linear systems in a random medium. We are able to derive analytic results when the distribution of the holding times are light-tailed. We show that the lack of independence may lead in dimension bigger than one to non-trivial effects in the asymptotics …
We study one-dimensional functional inequalities of the type of Poincaré, logarithmic Sobolev and Wirtinger, with weight, for probability densities with polynomial tails. As main examples, we obtain sharp inequalities satisfied by inverse Gamma densities, taking values on $R_+$, and Cauchy-type densities, taking values on $R$. In this last case, we improve the result obtained by Bobkov and Ledoux in 2009 by introducing a better weight function in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. The results are obtained by resorting to Fokker-Planck type equations which possess these densities as steady sta…
We present explicit estimates of right and left tails and exact (up to universal, multiplicative constants) estimates of tails and moments of hitting times of Bessel processes. The latter estimates are obtained from more general estimates of moments and tails established for convolutions of elementary mixtures of exponential distributions.
Let $\{ξ_n\}$ be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables. In this paper we study the comparison for two upper tail probabilities $\mathbb{P}\{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a_n|ξ_n|^p\geq r\}$ and $\mathbb{P}\{\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}b_n|ξ_n|^p\geq r\}$ as $r\rightarrow\infty$ with two different real series $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}.$ The first result is for Gaussian random variables $\{ξ_n\},$ and in this case these two probabilities are equivalent after suitable scaling. The second result is for more general random variables, thus a weaker form of equivalence (namely, logarithmic …
This paper develops asymptotic approximations of $P(\int_Te^{f(t)}\,dt>b)$ as $b\rightarrow\infty$ for a homogeneous smooth Gaussian random field, $f$, living on a compact $d$-dimensional Jordan measurable set $T$. The integral of an exponent of a Gaussian random field is an important random variable for many generic models in spatial point processes, portfolio risk analysis, asset pricing and so forth. The analysis technique consists of two steps: 1. evaluate the tail probability $P(\int_Ξe^{f(t)}\,dt>b)$ over a small domain $Ξ$ depending on $b$, where $\operatorname {mes}(Ξ)\rightarrow0$ as …
Motivated by application in wireless networks, cloud computing, data centers etc, Stochastic Processing Networks have been studied in the literature under various asymptotic regimes. In the heavy-traffic regime, the steady state mean queue length is proved to be $O(\frac{1}ε)$ where $ε$ is the heavy-traffic parameter, that goes to zero in the limit. The focus of this paper is on obtaining queue length bounds on prelimit systems, thus establishing the rate of convergence to the heavy traffic. In particular, we study the generalized switch model operating under the MaxWeight algorithm, and we sh…
In the late 1990s, Kim and Vu pioneered an inductive method for showing concentration of certain random variables X. Shortly afterwards, Janson and Ruci{ń}ski developed an alternative inductive approach, which often gives comparable results for the upper tail Pr(X \ge (1+\eps) E[X]). In some cases, both methods yield upper tail estimates which are best possible up to a logarithmic factor in the exponent, but closing this narrow gap has remained a technical challenge. In this paper we present a BK-inequality based combinatorial sparsification idea that can recover this missing logarithmic term …
We study how to sample paths of a random walk up to the first time it crosses a fixed barrier, in the setting where the step sizes are iid with negative mean and have a regularly varying right tail. We introduce a desirable property for a change of measure to be suitable for exact simulation. We study whether the change of measure of Blanchet and Glynn (2008) satisfies this property and show that it does so if and only if the tail index $α$ of the right tail lies in the interval $(1, \, 3/2)$.
The upper tail problem for the largest eigenvalue of the Erdős--Rényi random graph $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ is to estimate the probability that the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ exceeds its typical value by a factor of $1+δ$. In this note we show that for $δ>0$ fixed, and $p \rightarrow 0$ such that $n^{\frac{1}{2}} p \rightarrow \infty$, the upper tail probability for the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ is $$\exp\left[-(1+o(1)) \min\left\{\tfrac{(1+δ)^2}{2}, δ(1+δ) \right\} n^{2}p^{2}\log (1/p)\right].$$ In the same regime of $p$, we show that the seco…
We consider a spatial stochastic model of wireless cellular networks, where the base stations (BSs) are deployed according to a simple and stationary point process on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge2$. In this model, we investigate tail asymptotics of the distribution of signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), which is a key quantity in wireless communications. In the case where the path-loss function representing signal attenuation is unbounded at the origin, we derive the exact tail asymptotics of the SIR distribution under an appropriate sufficient condition. While we show that widely-used models based o…
Let $N_{\triangle}(G)$ be the number of triangles in a graph $G$. In [14] and [25] (respectively) the following bounds were proved on the lower tail behaviour of triangle counts in the dense Erdős-Rényi random graphs $G_m\sim G(n,m)$: \[ \mathbb{P}\big(N_{\triangle}(G_m) \, < \, (1-δ)\mathbb{E}[N_{\triangle}(G_m)]\big) \,=\, \exp\left(-Θ\left(δ^2n^3\right)\right) \qquad \text{if $n^{-3/2}\ll δ\ll n^{-1}$} \] and \[ \mathbb{P}\big(N_{\triangle}(G_m) \, < \, (1-δ)\mathbb{E}[N_{\triangle}(G_m)]\big) \,=\, \exp\left(-Θ(δ^{2/3}n^2) \right) \qquad \text{if $n^{-3/4} \ll δ\ll 1$.} \] Neeman, Radin an…
Let $X_{1},..,X_{n}$ denote an i.i.d. sample with light tail distribution and $S_{1}^{n}$ denote the sum of its terms; let $a_{n}$ be a real sequence\ going to infinity with $n.$\ In a previous paper (\cite{BoniaCao}) it is proved that as $n\rightarrow\infty$, given $\left(S_{1}^{n}/n>a_{n}\right) $ all terms $X_{i_{\text{}}}$ concentrate around $a_{n}$ with probability going to 1. This paper explores the asymptotic distribution of $X_{1}$ under the conditioning events $\left(S_{1}^{n}/n=a_{n}\right) $ and $\left(S_{1}^{n}/n\geq a_{n}\right)$ . It is proved that under some regulatity property,…
We give asymptotics for the left and right tails of the limiting Quicksort distribution. The results agree with, but are less precise than, earlier non-rigorous results by Knessl and Spankowski.
We discuss two-sided bounds for moments and tails of quadratic forms in Gaussian random variables with values in Banach spaces. We state a natural conjecture and show that it holds up to additional logarithmic factors. Moreover in a certain class of Banach spaces (including $L_r$-spaces) these logarithmic factors may be eliminated. As a corollary we derive upper bounds for tails and moments of quadratic forms in subgaussian random variables, which extend the Hanson-Wright inequality.
We give upper and lower asymptotic bounds for the left tail and for the right tail of the continuous limiting QuickSort density f that are nearly matching in each tail. The bounds strengthen results from a paper of Svante Janson (2015) concerning the corresponding distribution function F. Furthermore, we obtain similar bounds on absolute values of derivatives of f of each order.
We obtain concentration and large deviation for the sums of independent and identically distributed random variables with heavy-tailed distributions. Our concentration results are concerned with random variables whose distributions satisfy $\mathbb{P}(X>t) \leq {\rm e}^{- I(t)}$, where $I: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is an increasing function and $I(t)/t \rightarrow α\in [0, \infty)$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$. Our main theorem can not only recover some of the existing results, such as the concentration of the sum of subWeibull random variables, but it can also produce new results for th…
