We introduce unitary representations of continuous groupoids on continuous fields of Hilbert spaces. We investigate some properties of these objects and discuss some of the standard constructions from representation theory in this particular context. An important r\^{ole} is played by the regular representation. We conclude by discussing some operator algebra associated to continuous representations of groupoids; in particular, we analyse the relationship of continuous representations of $G$ and continuous representations of the Banach $*$-category $\hat{L}^{1}(G)$.
We define and investigate the concept of the groupoid representation induced by a representation of the isotropy subgroupoid. Groupoids in question are locally compact transitive topological groupoids. We formulate and prove the imprimitivity theorem for such representations which is a generalization of the classical Mackey's theorem known from the theory of group representations.
The classical Serre-Swan's theorem defines a bijective correspondence between vector bundles and finitely generated projective modules over the algebra of continuous functions on some compact Hausdorff topological space. We extend these results to obtain a correspondence between the category of representations of an etale Lie groupoid and the category of modules over its convolution algebra that are of finite type and of constant rank. Both of these constructions are functorially defined on the Morita bicategory of etale Lie groupoids and the given correspondence represents a natural equivalen…
In a series of papers, we have shown that from the representatio theory of a compact groupoid one can reconstruct the groupoid using the procedure similar to the Tannaka-Krein duality for compact groups. In this part we study continuous representations of compact groupoids. We show that irreducible representations have finite dimensional fibres. We prove the Schur's lemma, Gelfand-Raikov theorem and Peter-Weyl theorem for compact groupoids.
The present paper links the representation theory of Lie groupoids and infinite-dimensional Lie groups. We show that smooth representations of Lie groupoids give rise to smooth representations of associated Lie groups. The groups envisaged here are the bisection group and a group of groupoid self maps. Then representations of the Lie groupoids give rise to representations of the infinite-dimensional Lie groups on spaces of (compactly supported) bundle sections. Endowing the spaces of bundle sections with a fine Whitney type topology, the fine very strong topology, we even obtain continuous and…
In this paper, we undertake the study of the Tannaka duality construction for the ordinary representations of a proper Lie groupoid on vector bundles. We show that for each proper Lie groupoid G, the canonical homomorphism of G into the reconstructed groupoid T(G) is surjective, although, contrary to what happens in the case of groups, it may fail to be an isomorphism. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in order that G may be isomorphic to T(G) and, more generally, in order that T(G) may be a Lie groupoid. We show that if T(G) is a Lie groupoid, the canonical homomorphism from G int…
In this paper we investigate relations between Koopman, groupoid and quasi-regular representations of countable groups. We show that for an ergodic measure class preserving action of a countable group G on a standard Borel space the associated groupoid and quasi-regular representations are weakly equivalent and weakly contained in the Koopman representation. Moreover, if the action is hyperfinite then the Koopman representation is weakly equivalent to the groupoid. As a corollary of our results we obtain a continuum of pairwise disjoint pairwise equivalent irreducible representations of weakly…
In this paper we introduce an intrinsic version of the classical induction of representations for a subgroup $H$ of a (finite) group $G$, called here {\em geometric induction}, which associates to any, not necessarily transitive, $G$-set $X$ and any representation of the action groupoid $A(G,X)$ associated to $G$ and $X$, a representation of the group $G$. We show that geometric induction, applied to one dimensional characters of the action groupoid of a suitable $G$-set $X$ affords a Gelfand Model for $G$ in the case where $G$ is either the symmetric group or the projective general linear gro…
We introduce the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(κ)$ generated by the Koopman representation $κ$ of an étale groupoid $G$ acting on a measure space $(X,μ)$. We prove that for a level transitive self-similar action $(G,E)$ with $E$ finite and $|uE^1|$ constant, there is an invariant measure $ν$ on $X=E^\infty$ and that $C^*(κ)$ is residually finite-dimensional with a normalized self-similar trace. We also discus $p$-fold similarities of Hilbert spaces in connection to representations of the graph algebra $C^*(E)$ and self-similar representations of $G$ in connection to the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $C^*(G,E)$.
Given a morphism of (small) groupoids with injective object map, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions under which the induction and co-induction functors between the categories of linear representations are naturally isomorphic. A morphism with this property is termed a Frobenius morphism of groupoids. As a consequence, an extension by a subgroupoid is Frobenius if and only if each fibre of the (left or right) pull-back biset has finitely many orbits. Our results extend and clarify the classical Frobenius reciprocity formulae in the theory of finite groups, and characterize Frobenius…
We survey several notions of Mackey functors and biset functors found in the literature and prove some old and new theorems comparing them. While little here will surprise the experts, we draw a conceptual and unified picture by making systematic use of finite groupoids. This provides a road map for the various approaches to the axiomatic representation theory of finite groups, as well as some details which are hard to find in writing.
VB-groupoids are vector bundles in the category of Lie groupoids. They encompass several classical objects, including Lie group representations and 2-vector spaces. Moreover, they provide geometric pictures for 2-term representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids. We attach to every VB-groupoid a cochain complex controlling its deformations and discuss its fundamental features, such as Morita invariance and a van Est theorem. Several examples and applications are given.
We classify finite-dimensional irreducible highest weight modules of generalized quantum groups whose positive part is infinite dimensional and has a Kharchenko's PBW basis with an irreducible finite positive root system.
This thesis deals with deformations of VB-algebroids and VB-groupoids. They can be considered as vector bundles in the categories of Lie algebroids and groupoids and encompass several classical objects, including Lie algebra and Lie group representations, 2-vector spaces and the tangent and the cotangent algebroid (groupoid) to a Lie algebroid (groupoid). Moreover, they are geometric models for some kind of representations of Lie algebroids (groupoids), namely 2-term representations up to homotopy. Finally, it is well known that Lie groupoids are "concrete" incarnations of differentiable stack…
By replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over a manifold with the category of what we call smooth Euclidean fields, which is a proper enlargement of the former, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields, we are able to prove a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. The notion of smooth Euclidean field we introduce here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the usual notion of continuous Hilbert field.
VB-groupoids define a special class of Lie groupoids which carry a compatible linear structure. In this paper, we show that their differentiable cohomology admits a refinement by considering the complex of cochains which are k-homogeneous on the linear fiber. Our main result is a Van Est theorem for such cochains. We also work out two applications to the general theory of representations of Lie groupoids and algebroids. The case k=1 yields a Van Est map for representations up to homotopy on 2-term graded vector bundles. Arbitrary k-homogeneous cochains on suitable VB-groupoids lead to a novel …
The main contribution of this thesis is a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. This result is obtained by replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over the base manifold of a Lie groupoid with a larger category, the category of smooth Euclidean fields, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields. The notion of smooth Euclidean field that is introduced here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the familiar notion of continuous Hilbert field. In the second part of the thesis, ordinary smooth representations of Lie groupoids on smooth…
We observe that any connected proper Lie groupoid whose orbits have codimension at most two admits a globally effective representation on a smooth vector bundle, i.e., one whose kernel consists only of ineffective arrows. As an application, we deduce that any such groupoid can up to Morita equivalence be presented as an extension of some action groupoid G n X with G compact by some bundle of compact Lie groups.
We use the Darboux coordinate representation found by two of the authors (L.Ch. and M.Sh.) for entries of general symplectic leaves of the $\mathcal A_n$-groupoid of upper-triangular matrices to express roots of the characteristic equation $\det(\mathbb A-λ\mathbb A^{\text{T}})=0$, with $\mathbb A\in \mathcal A_n$, in terms of Casimirs of this Darboux coordinate representation, which is based on cluster variables of Fock--Goncharov higher Teichmüller spaces for the algebra $sl_n$. We show that roots of the characteristic equation are simple monomials of cluster Casimir elements. This statement…
