The main contribution of this thesis is a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. This result is obtained by replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over the base manifold of a Lie groupoid with a larger category, the category of smooth Euclidean fields, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields. The notion of smooth Euclidean field that is introduced here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the familiar notion of continuous Hilbert field. In the second part of the thesis, ordinary smooth representations of Lie groupoids on smooth vector bundles are systematically studied from the point of view of Tannaka duality, and various results are obtained in this direction.
By replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over a manifold with the category of what we call smooth Euclidean fields, which is a proper enlargement of the former, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields, we are able to prove a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. The notion of smooth Euclidean field we introduce here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the usual notion of continuous Hilbert field.
The topic of this paper is a generalization of Tannaka duality to coclosed categories. As an application we prove reconstruction theorems for coalgebras (and bialgebras) in categories of topological vector spaces over a nonarchimedean field K. In particular, our results imply reconstruction and recognition theorems for categories of locally analytic representations of compact $p$-adic groups.
The purpose of this work is twofold: to expose the existing similarities between the generalizations of the Tannaka and Galois theories, and on the other hand, to develop in detail our own treatment of part of the content of Joyal and Street [1] paper, generalizing from vector spaces to an abstract tensor category. We also develop in detail the proof of the Tannaka equivalence of categories in the case of vector spaces. Saavedra Rivano [2], Deligne and Milne [3] generalize classical Tannaka theory to the context of K-linear tensor (or monoidal) categories. They obtain a lifting-equivalence int…
For each finite semisimple tensor category, we associate a quantum group (face algebra) whose comodule category is equivalent to the original one, in a simple natural manner. To do this, we also give a generalization of the Tannaka-Krein duality, which assigns a face algebra for each tensor category equipped with an embedding into a certain kind of bimodule category.
Tannaka Duality describes the relationship between algebraic objects in a given category and their representations; an important case is that of Hopf algebras and their categories of representations; these have strong monoidal forgetful "fibre functors" to the category of vector spaces. We simultaneously generalize the theory of Tannaka duality in two ways: first, we replace Hopf algebras with weak Hopf algebras and strong monoidal functors with separable Frobenius monoidal functors; second, we replace the category of vector spaces with an arbitrary braided monoidal category. To accomplish thi…

We develop the Tannaka-Krein duality for monoidal functors with target in the categories of bimodules over a ring. The $\coend$ of such a functor turns out to be a Hopf algebroid over this ring. Using the result of a previous paper we characterize a small abelian, locally finite rigid monoidal category as the category of rigid comodules over a transitive Hopf algebroid.
Given a finite dimensional Hilbert space H and a collection of operators between its tensor powers satisfying certain properties, we give a category-free proof of the existence of a compact quantum group G with a fundamental representation U on H such that the intertwiners between the tensor powers of U coincide with the given collection of operators. We then explain how the general version of Woronowicz's Tannaka-Krein duality can be deduced from this.
A Tannakian category is an abelian tensor category equipped with a fiber functor and additional structures which ensure that it is equivalent to the category of representations of some affine groupoid scheme acting on the spectrum of a field extension. If we are working over an arbitrary commutative ring rather than a field, the categories of representations cease to be abelian. We provide a list of sufficient conditions which ensure that an additive tensor category is equivalent to the category of representations of an affine groupoid scheme acting on an affine scheme, or, more generally, to …
Given a horizontal monoid M in a duoidal category F, we examine the relationship between bimonoid structures on M and monoidal structures on the category of right M-modules which lift the vertical monoidal structure of F. We obtain our result using a variant of the Tannaka adjunction. The approach taken utilizes hom-enriched categories rather than categories on which a monoidal category acts ("actegories"). The requirement of enrichment in F itself demands the existence of some internal homs, leading to the consideration of convolution for duoidal categories. Proving that certain hom-functors …
What are the fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories C which are not abelian? We give an answer which leads to a new Tannaka duality theorem for bialgebroids generalizing earlier results by Phung Ho Hai. The construction reveals a sheaf theoretic interpretation in so far as the reconstructed bialgebroid H has comodule category equivalent to the category of T-sheaves w.r.t. a monoidal Grothendieck topology on C. We also prove an existence theorem for fiber functors on small additive monoidal categories with bounded fusion and weak kernels. For certain autonomous categories a genera…
A classical result of Tannaka duality is the fact that a coalgebra over a field can be reconstructed from its category of finite dimensional representations by using the forgetful functor which sends a representation to its underlying vector space. There is also a corresponding recognition result, which characterizes those categories equipped with a functor to finite dimensional vector spaces which are equivalent to the category of finite dimensional representations of a coalgebra. In this paper we study a generalization of these questions to an arbitrary cosmos, that is, a complete and cocomp…
We consider locales $B$ as algebras in the tensor category $s\ell$ of sup-lattices. We show the equivalence between the Joyal-Tierney descent theorem for open localic surjections $sh(B) \stackrel{q}{\longrightarrow} \mathcal{E}$ in Galois theory [An extension of the Galois Theory of Grothendieck, AMS Memoirs 151] and a Tannakian recognition theorem over $s\ell$ for the $s\ell$-functor $Rel(E) \stackrel{Rel(q^*)}{\longrightarrow} Rel(sh(B)) \cong (B$-$Mod)_0$ into the $s\ell$-category of discrete $B$-modules. Thus, a new Tannaka recognition theorem is obtained, essentially different from those …
Given a diagram of schemes, we can ask if a geometric object over one of them can be built from descent data (usually objects of the same type over the various other schemes in the diagram, together with compatibility isomorphisms). Using the language of moduli stacks, we can rephrase this as follows: saying that descent problems for a given diagram have essentially unique solutions amounts to saying that the diagram in question is a (bicategorical) colimit diagram in a certain 2-category of stacks. In this paper we use generalized Tannaka duality to explicitly compute certain colimits in the …
We study a non-commutative generalization of Stone duality that connects a class of inverse semigroups, called Boolean inverse $\wedge$-semigroups, with a class of topological groupoids, called Hausdorff Boolean groupoids. Much of the paper is given over to showing that Boolean inverse $\wedge$-semigroups arise as completions of inverse semigroups we call pre-Boolean. An inverse $\wedge$-semigroup is pre-Boolean if and only if every tight filter is an ultrafilter, where the definition of a tight filter is obtained by combining work of both Exel and Lenz. A simple necessary condition for a semi…
Under non-commutative Stone duality, there is a correspondence between second countable Hausdorff étale groupoids which have a Cantor space of identities and what we call Tarski inverse monoids: that is, countable Boolean inverse $\wedge$-monoids with semilattices of idempotents which are countable and atomless. Tarski inverse monoids are therefore the algebraic counterparts of the étale groupoids studied by Matui and provide a natural setting for many of his calculations. Under this duality, we prove that natural properties of the étale groupoid correspond to natural algebraic properties of t…
In this note a functorial approach to the integration problem of an LA-groupoid to a double Lie groupoid is discussed. To do that, we study the notions of fibred products in the categories of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such. In particular, it turns out, that the fibred product of Lie algebroids along integrable morphisms is always integrable by a fibred product of Lie groupoids. We show that to every LA-groupoid with integrable top structure one can associate a differentiable graph in the category of Lie groupoids, which is…
A pseudogroup is a complete infinitely distributive inverse monoid. Such inverse monoids bear the same relationship to classical pseudogroups of transformations as frames do to topological spaces. The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of pseudogroups motivated by applications to group theory, C*-algebras and aperiodic tilings. Our starting point is an adjunction between a category of pseudogroups and a category of etale groupoids from which we are able to set up a duality between spatial pseudogroups and sober etale groupoids. As a corollary to this duality, we deduce a non-commutati…
We prove that the category of boolean inverse monoids is dually equivalent to the category of boolean groupoids. This generalizes the classical Stone duality between boolean algebras and boolean spaces. As an instance of this duality, we show that the boolean inverse monoid associated with the Cuntz groupoid is the strong orthogonal completion of the polycyclic (or Cuntz) monoid and so its group of units is a Thompson group.
We extend Exel's ample tight groupoid construction to general locally compact étale groupoids in the Hausdorff case. Moreover, we show how inverse semigroups are represented in this way as 'pseudobases' of open bisections, thus yielding a duality which encompasses various extensions of the classic Stone duality.
Lie theory for the integration of Lie algebroids to Lie groupoids, on the one hand, and of Poisson manifolds to symplectic groupoids, on the other, has undergone tremendous developements in the last decade, thanks to the work of Mackenzie-Xu, Moerdijk-Mrcun, Cattaneo-Felder and Crainic-Fernandes, among others. In this thesis we study - part of - the categorified version of this story, namely the integrability of LA-groupoids (groupoid objects in the category of Lie algebroids), to double Lie groupoids (groupoid objects in the category of Lie groupoids) providing a first set of sufficient condi…
By homotopy linear algebra we mean the study of linear functors between slices of the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-groupoids, subject to certain finiteness conditions. After some standard definitions and results, we assemble said slices into $\infty$-categories to model the duality between vector spaces and profinite-dimensional vector spaces, and set up a global notion of homotopy cardinality à la Baez-Hoffnung-Walker compatible with this duality. We needed these results to support our work on incidence algebras and Möbius inversion over $\infty$-groupoids; we hope that they can also be of i…
** Draft Version ** To any boolean topos one can associate its category of internal Hilbert spaces, and if the topos is locally separated one can consider a full subcategory of square integrable Hilbert spaces. In both case it is a symmetric monoidal monotone complete $C^{*}$-category. We will prove that any boolean locally separated topos can be reconstructed as the classifying topos of "non-degenerate" monoidal normal $*$-representations of both its category of internal Hilbert spaces and its category of square integrable Hilbert spaces. This suggest a possible extension of the usual Gelfand…
