By replacing the category of smooth vector bundles over a manifold with the category of what we call smooth Euclidean fields, which is a proper enlargement of the former, and by considering smooth actions of Lie groupoids on smooth Euclidean fields, we are able to prove a Tannaka duality theorem for proper Lie groupoids. The notion of smooth Euclidean field we introduce here is the smooth, finite dimensional analogue of the usual notion of continuous Hilbert field.

Tannaka-Krein duality for compact groupoids I, representation theory

In a series of papers, we have shown that from the representatio theory of a compact groupoid one can reconstruct the groupoid using the procedure similar to the Tannaka-Krein duality for compact groups. In this part we study continuous representations of compact groupoids. We show that irreducible representations have finite dimensional fibres. We prove the Schur's lemma, Gelfand-Raikov theorem and Peter-Weyl theorem for compact groupoids.

Noncommutative integration, quantum mechanics, Tannaka's theorem for compact groupoids and examples

We consider topological groupoids in finite and also in a compact settings. In the initial sections, we introduce definitions of typical observables and we studied them in the context of statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics. On the role of effective representations of Lie groupoids

In this paper, we undertake the study of the Tannaka duality construction for the ordinary representations of a proper Lie groupoid on vector bundles. We show that for each proper Lie groupoid G, the canonical homomorphism of G into the reconstructed groupoid T(G) is surjective, although, contrary to what happens in the case of groups, it may fail to be an isomorphism. A construction of a quotient tensor category

For a rigid tensor abelian category $T$ over a field $k$ we introduce a notion of a normal quotient $q:T\to Q$. In case $T$ is a Tannaka category, our notion is equivalent to Milne's notion of a normal quotient. More precisely, if $T$ is the category of finite dimensional representations of a groupoid scheme $G$ over $k$, then $Q$ is equivalent to the representation category of a normal subgroupoid scheme of $G$. A note on the global structure of proper Lie groupoids in low codimensions

We observe that any connected proper Lie groupoid whose orbits have codimension at most two admits a globally effective representation on a smooth vector bundle, i.e., one whose kernel consists only of ineffective arrows. As an application, we deduce that any such groupoid can up to Morita equivalence be presented as an extension of some action groupoid G n X with G compact by some bundle of compact Lie groups.

Continuous representations of groupoids

We introduce unitary representations of continuous groupoids on continuous fields of Hilbert spaces. We investigate some properties of these objects and discuss some of the standard constructions from representation theory in this particular context. An important r\^{ole} is played by the regular representation. We conclude by discussing some operator algebra associated to continuous representations of groupoids; in particular, we analyse the relationship of continuous representations of $G$ and continuous representations of the Banach $*$-category $\hat{L}^{1}(G)$.
