We prove Leavitt path algebra versions of the two uniqueness theorems of graph C*-algebras. We use these uniqueness theorems to analyze the ideal structure of Leavitt path algebras and give necessary and sufficient conditions for their simplicity. We also use these results to give a proof of the fact that for any graph E the Leavitt path algebra $L_\mathbb{C}(E)$ embeds as a dense *-subalgebra of the graph C*-algebra C*(E). This embedding has consequences for graph C*-algebras, and we discuss how we obtain new information concerning the construction of C*(E).
In this article, we provide an explicit description of a set of generators for any ideal of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. We provide several additional consequences of this description, including information about generating sets for graded ideals, the graded uniqueness and Cuntz-Krieger theorems, the semiprimeness, and the semiprimitivity of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras, a complete characterization of the prime and primitive ideals of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. We also show that every primitive ideal of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is exactly the annihilator of a Chen…
Let E be an arbitrary graph and K be any field. For every non-graded ideal I of the Leavitt path algebra L_{K}(E), we give an explicit description of the generators of I. Using this, we show that every finitely generated ideal of L_{K}(E) must be principal. In particular, if E is a finite graph, then every ideal of L_{K}(E) must be principal ideal.
Let $\mathcal G$ be an ultragraph and let $K$ be a field. We describe prime and primitive ideals in the ultragraph Leavitt path algebra $L_K(\mathcal G)$. We identify the graded prime ideals in terms of downward directed sets and then we characterize the non-graded prime ideals. We show that the non-graded prime ideals of $L_K(\mathcal G)$ are always primitive.
We realize Leavitt path algebras as partial skew group rings and give new proofs, based on partial skew group ring theory, of the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem and simplicity criteria for Leavitt path algebras.
Given an arbitrary graph E and a field K, the prime ideals as well as the primitive ideals of the Leavitt path algebra L_K(E) are completely described in terms of their generators. The stratification of the prime spectrum of L_K(E) is indicated with information on its individual stratum. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given on the graph E under which every prime ideal of L_K(E) is primitive. Leavitt path algebras of Krull dimension zero are characterized and those with various prescribed Krull dimension are constructed. The minimal prime ideals of L_K(E) are are described in terms of …
Given a directed graph E we describe a method for constructing a Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ whose coefficients are in a commutative unital ring R. We prove versions of the Graded Uniqueness Theorem and Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for these Leavitt path algebras, giving proofs that both generalize and simplify the classical results for Leavitt path algebras over fields. We also analyze the ideal structure of $L_R(E)$, and we prove that if $K$ is a field, then $L_K(E) \cong K \otimes_\Z L_\Z(E)$.
We consider the ideal structure of Steinberg algebras over a commutative ring with identity. We focus on Hausdorff groupoids that are strongly effective in the sense that their reductions to closed subspaces of their unit spaces are all effective. For such a groupoid, we completely describe the ideal lattice of the associated Steinberg algebra over any commutative ring with identity. Our results are new even for the special case of Leavitt path algebras; so we describe explicitly what they say in this context, and give two concrete examples.
We introduce a notion of ideal-related K-theory for rings, and use it to prove that if two complex Leavitt path algebras are Morita equivalent (respectively, isomorphic), then the ideal-related K-theories (respectively, the unital ideal-related K-theories) of the corresponding graph C*-algebras are isomorphic. This has consequences for the "Morita equivalence conjecture" and "isomorphism conjecture" for graph algebras, and allows us to prove that when E and F belong to specific collections of graphs whose C*-algebras are classified by ideal-related K-theory, Morita equivalence (respectively, i…
A Leavitt labelled path algebra over a commutative unital ring is associated with a labelled space, generalizing Leavitt path algebras associated with graphs and ultragraphs as well as torsion-free commutative algebras generated by idempotents. We show that Leavitt labelled path algebras can be realized as partial skew group rings, Steinberg algebras, and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. Via these realizations we obtain generalized uniqueness theorems, a description of diagonal preserving isomorphisms and we characterize simplicity of Leavitt labelled path algebras. In addition, we prove that a large c…
We introduce the Leavitt path algebras of ultragraphs and we characterize their ideal structures. We then use this notion to introduce and study the algebraic analogous of Exel-Laca algebras.
For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we show that the Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ of a graph $E$ embeds into $L_{2,R}$ precisely when $E$ is countable. Before proving this result we prove a generalised Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for Leavitt path algebras over $R$.
We prove an algebraic version of the Gauge-Invariant Uniqueness Theorem, a result which gives information about the injectivity of certain homomorphisms between ${\mathbb Z}$-graded algebras. As our main application of this theorem, we obtain isomorphisms between the Leavitt path algebras of specified graphs. From these isomorphisms we are able to achieve two ends. First, we show that the $K_0$ groups of various sets of purely infinite simple Leavitt path algebras, together with the position of the identity element in $K_0$, classifies the algebras in these sets up to isomorphism. Second, we s…
We show that the graph construction used to prove that a gauge-invariant ideal of a graph C*-algebra is isomorphic to a graph C*-algebra, and also used to prove that a graded ideal of a Leavitt path algebra is isomorphic to a Leavitt path algebra, is incorrect as stated in the literature. We give a new graph construction to remedy this problem, and prove that it can be used to realize a gauge-invariant ideal (respectively, a graded ideal) as a graph C*-algebra (respectively, a Leavitt path algebra).
When the theory of Leavitt path algebras was already quite advanced, it was discovered that some of the more difficult questions were susceptible to a new approach using topological groupoids. The main result that makes this possible is that the Leavitt path algebra of a graph is graded isomorphic to the Steinberg algebra of the graph's boundary path groupoid. This expository paper has three parts: Part 1 is on the Steinberg algebra of a groupoid, Part 2 is on the path space and boundary path groupoid of a graph, and Part 3 is on the Leavitt path algebra of a graph. It is a self-contained refe…
Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid in which s is a local homeomorphism and the unit space is totally disconnected. Assume there is a continuous cocycle c from G into a discrete group $Γ$. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported functions on G is a dense *-subalgebra of C_c(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumji…
An ultragraph gives rise to a labelled graph with some particular properties. In this paper we describe the algebras associated to such labelled graphs as groupoid algebras. More precisely, we show that the known groupoid algebra realization of ultragraph C*-algebras is only valid for ultragraphs for which the range of each edge is finite, and we extend this realization to any ultragraph (including ultragraphs with sinks). Using our machinery, we characterize the shift space associated to an ultragraph as the tight spectrum of the inverse semigroup associated to the ultragraph (viewed as a lab…
We study relative Cohn path algebras, also known as Leavitt-Cohn path algebras, and we realize them as partial skew group rings (to do this we prove uniqueness theorems for relative Cohn path algebras). Furthermore, given any graph $E$ we define $E$-relative branching systems and prove how they induce representations of the associated relative Cohn path algebra. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for faithfulness of the representations associated to $E$-relative branching systems (this improves previous results known to Leavitt path algebras of row-finite graphs with no sinks). To pro…
The construction of the Leavitt path algebra associated to a directed graph $E$ is extended to incorporate a family $C$ consisting of partitions of the sets of edges emanating from the vertices of $E$. The new algebras, $L_K(E,C)$, are analyzed in terms of their homology, ideal theory, and K-theory. These algebras are proved to be hereditary, and it is shown that any conical abelian monoid occurs as the monoid $\mon{L_K(E,C)}$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over one of these algebras. The lattice of trace ideals of $L_K(E,C)$ is determined by graph-theoretic da…
We introduce higher-rank analogues of the Leavitt path algebras, which we call the Kumjian-Pask algebras. We prove graded and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for these algebras, and analyze their ideal structure.
The Kumjian-Pask algebra KP(Λ) is a graded algebra associated to a higher-rank graph Λand is a generalization of the Leavitt path algebra of a directed graph. We analyze the minimal left-ideals of KP(Λ), and identify its socle as a graded ideal by describing its generators in terms of a subset of vertices of the graph. We characterize when KP(Λ) is semisimple, and obtain a complete structure theorem for a semisimple Kumjian-Pask algebra.
We introduce filtered algebraic $K$-theory of a ring $R$ relative to a sublattice of ideals. This is done in such a way that filtered algebraic $K$-theory of a Leavitt path algebra relative to the graded ideals is parallel to the gauge invariant filtered $K$-theory for graph $C^*$-algebras. We apply this to verify the Abrams-Tomforde conjecture for a large class of finite graphs.
Given an ample, Hausdorff groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, and a unital commutative ring $R$, we consider the Steinberg algebra $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. First we prove a uniqueness theorem for this algebra and then, when $\mathcal{G}$ is graded by a cocycle, we study graded ideals in $A_R(\mathcal {G})$. Applications are given for two classes of ample groupoids, namely those coming from actions of groups on graphs, and also to groupoids defined in terms of Boolean dynamical systems.
We introduce a new class of partial actions of free groups on totally disconnected compact Hausdorff spaces, which we call convex subshifts. These serve as an abstract framework for the partial actions associated with finite separated graphs in much the same way as classical subshifts generalize the edge shift of a finite graph. We define the notion of a finite type convex subshift and show that any such subshift is Kakutani equivalent to the partial action associated with a finite bipartite separated graph. We then study the ideal structure of both the full and the reduced tame graph C*-algeb…
Motivated by the notion of a set of uniqueness in a locally compact group $G$, we introduce and study ideals of uniqueness in the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of $G$, and their accompanying operator version, masa-bimodules of uniqueness. We establish a transference between the two notions, and use this result to show that the property of being an ideal of uniqueness is preserved under natural operations.
Inspired by results for graph $C^*$-algebras, we investigate connections between the ideal structure of an inverse semigroup $S$ and that of its tight $C^*$-algebra by relating ideals in $S$ to certain open invariant sets in the associated tight groupoid. We also develop analogues of Conditions (L) and (K) for inverse semigroups, which are related to certain congruences on $S$. We finish with applications to the inverse semigroups of self-similar graph actions and some relevant comments on the authors' earlier uniqueness theorems for inverse semigroups.
In this paper we generalize the notion of a $k$-graph into (countable) infinite rank. We then define our $C^*$-algebra in a similar way as in $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. With this construction we are able to find analogues to the Gauge Invariant Uniqueness and Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorems. We also show that the $\mathbb{N}$-graph $C^*$-algebras can be viewed as the inductive limit of $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. This gives a nice way to describe the gauge-invariant ideal structure. Additionally, we describe the vertex-set for regular gauge-invariant ideals of our $N$-graph $C^*$-algebras. We t…
We prove an analogue of the Lebesgue decomposition for continuous functionals on the commutant modulo a reflexive normed ideal of an n-tuple of hermitian operators for which there are quasicentral approximate units relative to the normed ideal. Using results of Godefroy-Talagrand and Pfitzner we derive from this strong uniqueness of the predual of such a commutant modulo a normed ideal.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be an ultragraph and let $C^*(\mathcal{G})$ be the associated $C^*$-algebra introduced by Mark Tomforde. For any gauge invariant ideal $I_{(H,B)}$ of $C^*(\mathcal{G})$, we approach the quotient $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$ by the $C^*$-algebra of finite graphs and prove versions of gauge invariant and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for it. We then describe primitive gauge invariant ideals and determine purely infinite ultragraph $C^*$-algebras (in the sense of Kirchberg-R$ø$rdam) via Fell bundles.
We enlarge the class of $C^*$-algebras of Boolean dynamical systems in order to include all weakly left-resolving normal labelled space $C^*$-algebras in it. We prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and classify all gauge-invariant ideals of these $C^*$-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical systems and describe the corresponding quotients as $C^*$-algebras of relative generalized Boolean dynamical systems.
We initiate the study of the internal structure of C*-algebras associated to a left cancellative semigroup in which any two principal right ideals are either disjoint or intersect in another principal right ideal; these are variously called right LCM semigroups or semigroups that satisfy Clifford's condition. Our main findings are results about uniqueness of the full semigroup C*-algebra. We build our analysis upon a rich interaction between the group of units of the semigroup and the family of constructible right ideals. As an application we identify algebraic conditions on S under which C*(S…
We introduce and analyse the structure of C*-algebras arising from ideals in right tensor C*-precategories, which naturally generalize both relative Cuntz-Pimsner and Doplicher-Roberts algebras. We establish an explicit intrinsic construction of the considered algebras and a number of key results such as structure theorem, gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem or description of the gauge-invariant ideal structure. In particular, these statements give a new insight into the corresponding results for relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and are applied to Doplicher-Roberts associated to C*-correspondenc…
We prove implications among the conditions in the title for an inclusion of a C*-algebra A in a C*-algebra B, and we also relate this to several other properties in case B is a crossed product for an action of a group, inverse semigroup or an étale groupoid on A. We show that an aperiodic C*-inclusion has a unique pseudo-expectation. If, in addition, the unique pseudo-expectation is faithful, then A supports B in the sense of the Cuntz preorder. The almost extension property implies aperiodicity, and the converse holds if B is separable. A crossed product inclusion has the almost extension pro…
We introduce and analyze the full $\mathcal{NT}_{\mathcal{L}}(\mathcal{K})$ and the reduced $\mathcal{NT}_{\mathcal{L}}^r(\mathcal{K})$ Nica-Toeplitz algebra associated to an ideal $\mathcal{K}$ in a right tensor $C^*$-precategory $\mathcal{L}$ over a right LCM semigroup $P$. Our main results are uniqueness theorems in the spirit of classical Coburn's theorem, generalizing uniqueness results for Toeplitz-type $C^*$-algebras associated to single $C^*$-correspondences, quasi-lattice ordered semigroups, and crossed products twisted by product systems of $C^*$-correspondences obtained by Fowler, L…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be an ultragraph and let $C^*(\mathcal{G})$ be the associated $C^*$-algebra introduced by Mark Tomforde. For any gauge invariant ideal $I_{(H,B)}$ of $C^*(\mathcal{G})$, we analyze the structure of the quotient $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$. For simplicity's sake, we first introduce the notion of quotient ultragraph $\mathcal{G}/(H,B)$ and an associated $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G}/(H,B))$ such that $C^*(\mathcal{G}/(H,B))\cong C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$. We then prove the gauge invariant and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for $C^*(\mathcal{G}/(H,B))$ a…
To an arbitrary directed graph we associate a row-finite directed graph whose C*-algebra contains the C*-algebra of the original graph as a full corner. This allows us to generalize results for C*-algebras of row-finite graphs to C*-algebras of arbitrary graphs: the uniqueness theorem, simplicity criteria, descriptions of the ideals and primitive ideal space, and conditions under which a graph algebra is AF and purely infinite. Our proofs require only standard Cuntz-Krieger techniques and do not rely on powerful constructs such as groupoids, Exel-Laca algebras, or Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
We consider Exel's interaction $(V,H)$ over a unital $C^*$-algebra $A$, such that $V(A)$ and $H(A)$ are hereditary subalgebras of $A$. For the associated crossed product, we obtain a uniqueness theorem, ideal lattice description, simplicity criterion and a version of Pimsner-Voiculescu exact sequence. These results cover the case of crossed products by endomorphisms with hereditary ranges and complementary kernels. As model examples of interactions not coming from endomorphisms we introduce and study in detail interactions arising from finite graphs. The interaction $(V,H)$ associated to a gra…
In the framework of operator theory, we investigate a close Lie theoretic relationship between all operator ideals and certain classical groups of invertible operators that can be described as the solution sets of certain algebraic equations, hence can be regarded as infinite-dimensional linear algebraic groups. Historically, this has already been done for only the complete-norm ideals; in that case one can work within the framework of the well-known Lie theory for Banach-Lie groups. That kind of Lie theory is not applicable for arbitrary operator ideals, so we needed to find a new approach fo…
