For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we show that the Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ of a graph $E$ embeds into $L_{2,R}$ precisely when $E$ is countable. Before proving this result we prove a generalised Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for Leavitt path algebras over $R$.
We show that the endomorphism ring of any nonzero finitely generated projective module over the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ of an arbitrary graph $E$ with coefficients in a field $K$ is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra. This yields in particular that every nonzero corner of the Leavitt path algebra of an arbitrary graph is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra. This in its turn gives that every $K$-algebra with local units which is Morita equivalent to the Leavitt path algebra of a row-countable graph is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra. Moreover, we prove that a corner by a projection of a $C…
We compute the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules of a Leavitt path algebra over an arbitrary directed graph. Our result generalizes the result of Ara, Moreno, and Pardo in which they computed this monoid of a Leavitt path algebra over a countable row-finite directed graph.
An introduction to Leavitt path algebras of arbitrary directed graphs is presented, and direct limit techniques are developed, with which many results that had previously been proved for countable graphs can be extended to uncountable ones. Such results include characterizations of simplicity, characterizations of the exchange property, and cancellation conditions for the K-theoretic monoid of equivalence classes of idempotent matrices.
We characterise when the Leavitt path algebras over $\mathbb{Z}$ of two arbitrary countable directed graphs are $*$-isomorphic by showing that two Leavitt path algebras over $\mathbb{Z}$ are $*$-isomorphic if and only if the corresponding graph groupoids are isomorphic (if and only if there is a diagonal preserving isomorphism between the corresponding graph $C^*$-algebras). We also prove that any $*$-homomorphism between two Leavitt path algebras over $\mathbb{Z}$ maps the diagonal to the diagonal. Both results hold for slight more general subrings of $\mathbb{C}$ than just $\mathbb{Z}$.
We construct an explicit projective bimodule resolution for the Leavitt path algebra of a row-finite quiver. We prove that the Leavitt path algebra of a row-countable quiver has Hochschild cohomolgical dimension at most one, that is, it is quasi-free in the sense of Cuntz-Quillen. The construction of the resolution relies on an explicit derivation of the Leavitt path algebra.
If $E$ is a not-necessarily row-finite graph, such that each vertex of $E$ emits at most countably many edges, then a {\it desingularization} $F$ of $E$ can be constructed (see e.g. (1) G. Abrams, G. Aranda Pino, Leavitt path algebras of arbitrary graphs, Houston J. Math 34(2) (2008), 423-442, or (2) I. Raeburn, "Graph algebras". CBMS Regional Conference Series in Mathematics 103, Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, Washington, DC, 2005, ISBN 0-8218-3660-9). The desingularization process has been effectively used to establish various characteristics of the Leavitt path algebras of n…
We show that the long exact sequence for K-groups of Leavitt path algebras deduced by Ara, Brustenga, and Cortinas extends to Leavitt path algebras of countable graphs with infinite emitters in the obvious way. Using this long exact sequence, we compute explicit formulas for the higher algebraic K-groups of Leavitt path algebras over certain fields, including all finite fields and all algebraically closed fields. We also examine classification of Leavitt path algebras using K-theory. It is known that the K_0-group and K_1-group do not suffice to classify purely infinite simple unital Leavitt p…
We prove Leavitt path algebra versions of the two uniqueness theorems of graph C*-algebras. We use these uniqueness theorems to analyze the ideal structure of Leavitt path algebras and give necessary and sufficient conditions for their simplicity. We also use these results to give a proof of the fact that for any graph E the Leavitt path algebra $L_\mathbb{C}(E)$ embeds as a dense *-subalgebra of the graph C*-algebra C*(E). This embedding has consequences for graph C*-algebras, and we discuss how we obtain new information concerning the construction of C*(E).
Let $E$ be an arbitrary (countable) graph and let $R$ be a unital commutative ring. We analyze the ideal structure of the Leavitt path algebra $\lr$ introduced by Mark Tomforde. We first modify the definition of basic ideals and we then develop the ideal characterization of Mark Tomforde. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the primeness and the primitivity of $\lr$. Then by applying these results we determine prime graded basic ideals and left (or right) primitive graded ideals of $\lr$. In particular, we show that when $E$ satisfies Condition (K) and $R$ is a field, the set …
Let E be an arbitrary directed graph with no restrictions on the number of vertices and edges and let K be any field. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Leavitt path algebra L_K(E) to be of countable irreducible representation type, that is, we determine when L_K(E)has at most countably many distinct isomorphism classes of simple left L_K(E-modules. It is also shown that L_K(E) has dinitely many isomorphism classes of simple left modules if and only if L_K(E) is a semi-artinian von Neumann regular ring with at most finitely many ideals. Equivalent conditions on the graph E are…
For any countable graph $E$, we investigate the relationship between the Leavitt path algebra $L_{\C}(E)$ and the graph C*-algebra $C^*(E)$. For graphs $E$ and $F$, we examine ring homomorphisms, ring *-homomorphisms, algebra homomorphisms, and algebra *-homomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$. We prove that in certain situations isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ yield *-isomorphisms between the corresponding C*-algebras $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$. Conversely, we show that *-isomorphisms between $C^*(E)$ and $C^*(F)$ produce isomorphisms between $L_{\C}(E)$ and $L_{\C}(F)$ …
Motivated by the study of traces on graph $C^*$-algebras, we consider traces (additive, central maps) on Leavitt path algebras, the algebraic counterparts of graph $C^*$-algebras. In particular, we consider traces which vanish on nonzero graded components of a Leavitt path algebra and refer to them as {\em canonical} since they are uniquely determined by their values on the vertices. A desirable property of a $\mathbb{C}$-valued trace on a $C^*$-algebra is that the trace of an element of the positive cone is nonnegative. We adapt this property to traces on a Leavitt path algebra $L_K(E)$ with …
We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on a (not necessarily countable) graph E for the graph C*-algebra C*(E) to be primitive. Along with a known characterization of the graphs E for which C*(E) is prime, our main result provides us with a systematic method for easily producing large classes of (necessarily nonseparable) C*-algebras that are prime but not primitive. We also compare and contrast our results with similar results for Leavitt path algebras.
The construction of the Leavitt path algebra associated to a directed graph $E$ is extended to incorporate a family $C$ consisting of partitions of the sets of edges emanating from the vertices of $E$. The new algebras, $L_K(E,C)$, are analyzed in terms of their homology, ideal theory, and K-theory. These algebras are proved to be hereditary, and it is shown that any conical abelian monoid occurs as the monoid $\mon{L_K(E,C)}$ of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over one of these algebras. The lattice of trace ideals of $L_K(E,C)$ is determined by graph-theoretic da…
We prove that there is a lattice embedded from every countable distributive lattice into the Boolean algebra of computable subsets of $\mathbb{N}$. Along the way, we discuss all relevant results about lattices, Boolean algebras and embeddings between them.
For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we investigate the embedding of tensor product algebras into the Leavitt algebra $L_{2,R}$. We show that the tensor product $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}\otimes L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ does not embed in $L_{2,\mathbb{Z}}$ (as a unital $*$-algebra). We also prove a partial non-embedding result for the more general $L_{2,R} \otimes L_{2,R}$. Our techniques rely on realising Thompson's group $V$ as a subgroup of the unitary group of $L_{2,R}$.
We show how to reconstruct a graded ample Hausdorff groupoid with topologically principal neutrally graded component from the ring structure of its graded Steinberg algebra over any commutative integral domain with 1, together with the embedding of the canonical abelian subring of functions supported on the unit space. We deduce that diagonal-preserving ring isomorphism of Leavitt path algebras implies $C^*$-isomorphism of $C^*$-algebras for graphs $E$ and $F$ in which every cycle has an exit.
We argue that it makes sense to talk about ``typical'' properties of lattices, and then show that there is, up to isomorphism, a unique countable lattice L* (the Fraisse limit of the class of finite lattices) that has all ``typical'' properties. Among these properties are: L* is simple and locally finite, every order preserving function can be interpolated by a lattice polynomial, and every finite lattice or countable locally finite lattice embeds into L*. The same arguments apply to other classes of algebras assuming they have a Fraisse limit and satisfy the finite embeddability property.
We prove that an arbitrary countable dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic $\neq 2$ that is locally of subexponential growth is embeddable in a finitely generated Lie algebra of subexponential growth.
It is shown that the skew field of Malcev-Neumann series of an ordered group frequently contains a free field of countable rank, i.e. the universal field of fractions of a free associative algebra of countable rank. This is an application of a criterion on embeddability of free fields on skew fields which are complete with respect to a valuation function, following K. Chiba. Other applications to skew Laurent series rings are discussed. Finally, embeddability questions on free fields of uncountable rank in Malcev-Neumann series rings are also considered.
We consider a generalization $K_0^{\operatorname{gr}}(R)$ of the standard Grothendieck group $K_0(R)$ of a graded ring $R$ with involution. If $Γ$ is an abelian group, we show that $K_0^{\operatorname{gr}}$ completely classifies graded ultramatricial $*$-algebras over a $Γ$-graded $*$-field $A$ such that (1) each nontrivial graded component of $A$ has a unitary element in which case we say that $A$ has enough unitaries, and (2) the zero-component $A_0$ is 2-proper (for any $a,b\in A_0,$ $aa^*+bb^*=0$ implies $a=b=0$) and $*$-pythagorean (for any $a,b\in A_0,$ $aa^*+bb^*=cc^*$ for some $c\in A_…
We prove that a countable dimensional associative algebra (resp. a countable semigroup) of locally subexponential growth is $M_\infty$-embeddable as a left ideal in a finitely generated algebra (resp. semigroup) of subexponential growth. Moreover, we provide bounds for the growth of the finitely generated algebra (resp. semigroup). The proof is based on a new construction of matrix wreath product of algebras.
In this paper we introduce an algebra embedding $ι:K< X >\to S$ from the free associative algebra $K< X >$ generated by a finite or countable set $X$ into the skew monoid ring $S = P * Σ$ defined by the commutative polynomial ring $P = K[X\times N^*]$ and by the monoid $Σ= < σ>$ generated by a suitable endomorphism $σ:P\to P$. If $P = K[X]$ is any ring of polynomials in a countable set of commuting variables, we present also a general Gröbner bases theory for graded two-sided ideals of the graded algebra $S = \bigoplus_i S_i$ with $S_i = P σ^i$ and $σ:P \to P$ an abstract endomorphism satisfyi…
In previous work, the second author introduced a topology, for spaces of irreducible representations, that reduces to the classical Zariski topology over commutative rings but provides a proper refinement in various noncommutative settings. In this paper, a concise and elementary description of this refined Zariski topology is presented, under certain hypotheses, for the space of simple left modules over a ring R. Namely, if R is left noetherian (or satisfies the ascending chain condition for semiprimitive ideals), and if R is either a countable dimensional algebra (over a field) or a ring who…
The zero-divisor graph of a finite commutative ring with unity is the graph whose vertex set is the set of zero-divisors in the ring, with $a$ and $b$ adjacent if $ab=0$. We show that the class of zero-divisor graphs is universal, in the sense that every finite graph is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of a zero-divisor graph. This remains true for various restricted classes of rings, including boolean rings, products of fields, and local rings. But in more restricted classes, the zero-divisor graphs do not form a universal family. For example, the zero-divisor graph of a local ring whose max…
Let $R\to U$ be an associative ring epimorphism such that $U$ is a flat left $R$-module. Assume that the related Gabriel topology $\mathbb G$ of right ideals in $R$ has a countable base. Then we show that the left $R$-module $U$ has projective dimension at most $1$. Furthermore, the abelian category of left contramodules over the completion of $R$ at $\mathbb G$ fully faithfully embeds into the Geigle-Lenzing right perpendicular subcategory to $U$ in the category of left $R$-modules, and every object of the latter abelian category is an extension of two objects of the former one. We discuss co…
