Let G be a connected reductive group. To any irreducible G-variety one associates a certain linear group generated by reflections called the Weyl group. Weyl groups play an important role in the study of embeddings of homogeneous spaces. We establish algorithms for computing Weyl groups for homogeneous spaces and affine homogeneous vector bundles. For some special classes of G-varieties (affine homogeneous vector bundles of maximal rank, affine homogeneous spaces, homogeneous spaces of maximal rank with discrete group of central automorphisms) we compute Weyl groups more or less explicitly.
To a finite quiver equipped with a positive integer on each of its vertices, we associate a holomorphic symplectic manifold having some parameters. This coincides with Nakajima's quiver variety with no stability parameter/framing if the integers attached on the vertices are all equal to one. The construction of reflection functors for quiver varieties are generalized to our case, in which these relate to simple reflections in the Weyl group of some symmetrizable, possibly non-symmetric Kac-Moody algebra. The moduli spaces of meromorphic connections on the rank 2 trivial bundle over the Riemann…
Starting from certain rational varieties blown-up from (P^1)^N, we construct a tropical, i.e., subtraction-free birational, representation of Weyl groups as a group of pseudo isomorphisms of the varieties. Furthermore, we develop an algebro-geometric framework of tau-functions as defining functions of exceptional divisors on the varieties. In the case where the corresponding root system is of affine type, our construction yields a class of (higher order) q-difference Painleve equations and its algebraic degree grows quadratically.
The paper reviews properties of the Weyl functional calculus for several operators and its relation to the generalised numerical range of $n$ hermitian matrices. The support and singular support of the Weyl functional calculus for $n$ hermitian matrices are determined by Kippenhahn varieties in algebraic geometry.
In previous work a relation between a large class of Kac-Moody algebras and meromorphic connections on global curves was established---notably the Weyl group gives isomorphisms between different moduli spaces of connections, and the root system is also seen to play a role. This involved a modular interpretation of many Nakajima quiver varieties, as moduli spaces of connections, whenever the underlying graph was a complete k-partite graph (or more generally a supernova graph). However in the isomonodromy story, or wild nonabelian Hodge theory, slightly larger moduli spaces of connections are co…
Some Weyl group acts on a family of rational varieties obtained by successive blow-ups at $m$ ($m\geq n+2$) points in the projective space $\mpp^n(\mc)$. In this paper we study the case where all the points of blow-ups lie on a certain elliptic curve in $\mpp^n$. Investigating the action of Weyl group on the Picard groups on the elliptic curve and on rational varieties, we show that the action on the parameters can be written as a group of linear transformations on the $(m+1)$-st power of a torus.
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties can be thought of as affine analogs of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties, or Frobenius-twisted analogs of Schubert varieties. We provide a method for proving a non-emptiness statement for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties inside the affine flag variety associated to affine Weyl group elements satisfying a certain length additivity hypothesis. In particular, we prove that non-emptiness holds whenever it is conjectured to do so for alcoves in the shrunken dominant Weyl chamber, providing a partial converse to the emptiness results of Goertz, Haines, Kottwitz, an…
We construct a Weyl group action on the DKS type varieties, a certain class of varieties associated with quivers. As a result, on some special DKS type varieties, we can give a quiver theoretic explanation of the quasi-classical Gelfand-Graev action discovered by Ginzburg and Riche and studied by Ginzburg and Kazhdan recently.
In this paper we show that the space of nodal rational curves, which is so called a Severi variety (of rational curves), on any non-singular projective surface is always equipped with a natural Einstein-Weyl structure, if the space is 3-dimensional. This is a generalization of the Einstein-Weyl structure on the space of smooth rational curves on a complex surface, given by N.Hitchin. As geometric objects naturally associated to Einstein-Weyl structure, we investigate null surfaces and geodesics on the Severi varieties. Also we see that if the projective surface has an appropriate real structur…
This paper gives an explicit formula of the dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated with generic Newton point in terms of Demazure product of Iwahori-Weyl groups.
Let G be a finite group. For each integral representation $ρ$ of G we consider $ρ-$decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties; that is, principally polarized abelian varieties (X,H) with $ρ(G)-$action, of dimension equal to the degree of $ρ$, which admit a decomposition of the lattice for X into two G-invariant sublattices isotropic with respect to $\Im H$, with one of the sublattices $\mathbb{Z}G-$isomorphic to $ρ$. We give a construction for $ρ-$decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties, and show that each of them is isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves. Conversely…
Let $π: Z \ra X$ be a Galois covering of smooth projective curves with Galois group the Weyl group of a simple and simply-connected Lie group $G$. For any dominant weight $λ$ consider the curve $Y = Z/\Stab(λ)$. The Kanev correspondence defines an abelian subvariety $P_λ$ of the Jacobian of $Y$. We compute the type of the polarization of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $\Jac(Y)$ to $P_λ$ in some cases. In particular, in the case of the group $E_8$ we obtain families of Prym-Tyurin varieties. The main idea is the use of an abelianization map of the Donagi-Prym variety…
A root system $R$ of rank $n$ defines an $n$-dimensional smooth projective toric variety $X(R)$ associated with its fan of Weyl chambers. We give a simple description of the functor of $X(R)$ in terms of the root system $R$ and apply this result in the case of root systems of type $A$ to give a new proof of the fact that the toric variety $X(A_n)$ is the fine moduli space $\bar{L}_{n+1}$ of stable $(n+1)$-pointed chains of projective lines investigated by Losev and Manin.
This paper studies affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_{\tw}(b)$ in the affine flag variety of a quasi-split tamely ramified group. We describe the geometric structure of $X_{\tw}(b)$ for a minimal length element $\tw$ in the conjugacy class of an extended affine Weyl group, generalizing one of the main results in \cite{HL} to the affine case. We then provide a reduction method that relates the structure of $X_{\tw}(b)$ for arbitrary elements $\tw$ in the extended affine Weyl group to those associated with minimal length elements. Based on this reduction, we establish a connection between the …
In this paper we give top most and least indices of non vanishing cohomology modules of line bundles in the Kac Moody setting in terms of Weyl group combinatorics. We also prove a surjection Theorem.
We prove that special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems are projectively normal. Here the maximal cones of the fans correspond to the Weyl chambers, and special means that the bundle is torus-equivariant such that the character of the line bundle that corresponds to a maximal Weyl chamber is dominant with respect to that chamber. Moreover, we prove that the associated semigroup rings are quadratic.
A classical and beautiful story in geometric representation theory is the construction by Springer of an action of the Weyl group on the cohomology of the fibres of the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone. We establish a natural extension of Springer's theory to arbitrary symplectic resolutions of conical symplectic singularities. We analyse features of the action in the case of affine quiver varieties, constructing Weyl group actions on the cohomology of $ADE$ quiver varieties, and also consider "symplectically dual" examples arising from slices in the affine Grassmannian. Along the way…
The authors compute the support varieties of all irreducible modules for the small quantum group $u_ζ(\mathfrak{g})$, where $\mathfrak{g}$ is a simple complex Lie algebra, and $ζ$ is a primitive $\ell$-th root of unity with $\ell$ larger than the Coxeter number of $\mathfrak{g}$. The calculation employs the prior calculations and techniques of Ostrik and of Nakano--Parshall--Vella, as well as deep results involving the validity of the Lusztig character formula for quantum groups and the positivity of parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the affine Weyl group. Analogous support variety cal…
Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic p. Generalizing the construction of the PBW filtration on Weyl modules for G we construct a G-stable filtration on tensor products of Weyl modules which we call the induced PBW filtration. We use this filtration to give some purely representation-theoretic conditions which are equivalent to the existence of a Frobenius splitting of the double flag variety $G/B \times G/B$ that maximally compatibly splits the diagonal. In particular, this gives a sufficient condition for Wahl's conjecture to hold…
In this paper, we discuss some partitions of affine flag varieties. These partitions include as special cases the partition of affine flag variety into affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and the affine analogue of the partition of flag varieties into $\cb_w(b)$ introduced by Lusztig in \cite{L1} as part of the definition of character sheaves. Among other things, we give a formula for the dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for classical loop groups in terms of degrees of class polynomials of extended affine Hecke algebra. We also prove that any simple $GL_n(\FF_q((\e)))$-module occurs …
We provide a proof that every Schubert variety of a semi-infinite flag variety is projectively normal. This gives us an interpretation of a Demazure module of a global Weyl module of a current Lie algebra as the (dual) space of the space of global sections of a semi-infinite Schubert variety. Moreover, we give geometric realizations of Feigin-Makedonskyi's generalized Weyl modules, and the $t = \infty$ specialization of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials.
We show that Fourier transforms on the Weyl algebras have a geometric counterpart in the framework of toric varieties, namely they induce isomorphisms between twisted rings of differential operators on regular toric varieties, whose fans are related to each other by reflections of one-dimensional cones. The simplest class of examples is provided by the toric varieties related by such reflections to projective spaces. It includes the blow-up at a point in affine space and resolution of singularities of varieties appearing in the study of the minimal orbit of sl(n+1).
Schubert varieties in the full flag variety of Kac-Moody type are indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group. We give a practical criterion for when two such Schubert varieties (from potentially different flag varieties) are isomorphic, in terms of the Cartan matrix and reduced words for the indexing Weyl group elements. As a corollary, we show that two such Schubert varieties are isomorphic if and only if there is an isomorphism between their integral cohomology rings that preserves the Schubert basis.
Consider a root system $R$ and the corresponding toric variety $V_R$ whose fan is the Weyl fan and whose lattice of characters is given by the root lattice for $R$. We prove the vanishing of the higher cohomology groups for certain line bundles on $V_R$ by proving a purely combinatorial result for root systems. These results are related to a converse to Mazur's Inequality for (simply-connected) split reductive groups.
This paper is a following to math.RT/0410454. For a finite group of Lie type we study the endomorphisms, commuting with the group action, of a Deligne-Lusztig variety associated to a regular element of the Weyl group. We state some general conjectures, in particular that the endomorphism algebra induced on the cohomology is a cyclotomic Hecke algebra, and prove them in some cases. On the way we also prove results on centralizers in braid groups.
Schubert varieties in finite dimensional flag manifolds G/P are a well-studied family of projective varieties indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group W. In particular, there are many tests for smoothness and rational smoothness of these varieties. One key result due to Lakshmibai-Sandhya is that in type A the smooth Schubert varieties are precisely those that are indexed by permutations that avoid the patterns 4231 and 3412. Recently, there has been a flurry of research related to the infinite dimensional analogs of flag manifolds corresponding with G being a Kac-Moody group and W …
Brion proved that the valuation cone of a complex spherical variety is a fundamental domain for a finite reflection group, called the little Weyl group. The principal goal of this paper is to generalize this fundamental theorem to fields of characteristic unequal to 2. We also prove a weaker version which holds in characteristic 2, as well. Our main tool is a generalization of Akhiezer's classification of spherical rank-1-varieties.
In \cite{CVX3}, we have established a Springer theory for the symmetric pair $(\operatorname{SL}(N),\operatorname{SO}(N))$. In this setting we obtain representations of (the Tits extension) of the braid group rather than just Weyl group representations. These representations arise from cohomology of families of certain (Hessenberg) varieties. In this paper we determine the Springer correspondence explicitly for IC sheaves supported on order 2 nilpotent orbits. In this process we encounter universal families of hyperelliptic curves. As an application we calculate the cohomolgy of Fano varieties…
We give a new proof of the fact that affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for an algebraic group of adjoint type, associated with superbasic elements, are of finite type. The proof uses a property of the associated Hecke algebra, which we reprove, and an estimate of the length of certain elements in the affine Weyl group.
A finite Coxeter group $W$ has a natural metric $d$ and if $\mathcal{M}$ is a subset of $W$, then for each $u\in W$, there is $q\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $d(u,q)=d(u,\mathcal{M})$. Such $q$ is not unique in general but if $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid, then it is unique, and we define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ so that $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}(u)=q$. The $T$-fixed point set $Y^T$ of a $T$-orbit closure $Y$ in a flag variety $G/B$ is a Coxeter matroid, where $G$ is a semisimple algebraic group, $B$ is a Borel subgroup, and $T$ is a maxim…
Let G be a simply-connected simple compact Lie group over the complex numbers. The affine Grassmannian is a projective ind-variety, homotopy-equivalent to the loop space of G and closely analogous to a maximal flag variety of the classical Grassmannian manifold. It has a Schubert cell decomposition indexed by the coroot lattice or equivalently by the minimal length coset representatives for the affine Weyl group modulo the Weyl group for G. The closure of an affine Schubert cell is a finite dimensional projective variety that we call an affine Schubert variety. In this paper we completely dete…
The affine Deligne-Lusztig variety $X_w(b)$ in the affine flag variety of a reductive group $\mathbb G$ depends on two parameters: the $σ$-conjugacy class $[b]$ and the element $w$ in the Iwahori-Weyl group $\tilde W$ of $\mathbb G$. In this paper, for any given $σ$-conjugacy class $[b]$, we determine the nonemptiness pattern and the dimension formula of $X_w(b)$ for most $w \in \tilde W$.
We show that certain characteristic varieties of a finitely generated module over a given Weyl algebra arising from weighted degree filtrations are equal to the critical cone of some other characteristic varieties. This behaviour of the characteristic varieties permits us to introduce a new invariant of the module. As a second consequence we are able to provide an easy and non-homological proof that the characteristic varieties of a module arising from weights in the natural polynomial region of the Weyl algebra all have the same Krull and Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, equal to the Gelfand-Kiril…
We obtain two combinatorial results: an equality of Weyl groups and an inequality of roots, in the setting of generalised Bott-Samelson resolutions of minuscule Schubert varieties. These results are used in the companion paper [BK19] to describe minimal rational curves on these resolutions, and their relation to lines on the Schubert varieties.
The aim of this article is to present a smoothness criterion for Schubert varieties in generalized flag manifolds $G/B$ in terms of patterns in root systems. We generalize Lakshmibai-Sandhya's well-known result that says that a Schubert variety in $SL(n)/B$ is smooth if and only if the corresponding permutation avoids the patterns 3412 and 4231. Our criterion is formulated uniformly in general Lie theoretic terms. We define a notion of pattern in Weyl group elements and show that a Schubert variety is smooth (or rationally smooth) if and only if the corresponding element of the Weyl group avoi…
Segre surfaces in the title mean quartic surfaces in $\mathbb{CP}^4$ which are the images of weak del Pezzo surfaces of degree four under the anti-canonical map. We first show that minimal minitwistor spaces with genus one are exactly Segre quartic surfaces. By a kind of Penrose correspondence, Zariski open subsets of the projective dual varieties of these surfaces admit Einstein-Weyl structure. We investigate structures of these dual varieties in detail. In particular, we determine the degrees of these varieties (namely the classes of the Segre surfaces), as well as structure of several compo…
In this paper, we consider affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_w(b)$ and their certain union $X(μ,b)$ inside the affine flag variety of a reductive group. Several important results in the study of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties have been established under the so-called superregularity hypothesis. Such results include a description of generic Newton points in Iwahori double cosets of loop groups, covering relation in associated Iwahori-Weyl group and dimension formula for $X(μ,b)$. We show that one can considerably weaken the superregularity hypothesis and sometimes completely eliminate it, t…
We examine the set of $J_b(F)$-orbits in the set of irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for a hyperspecial subgroup and minuscule coweight $μ$. Our description implies in particular that its number of elements is bounded by the dimension of a suitable weight space in the Weyl module associated with $μ$ of the dual group.
In this paper we define an action of the Weyl group on the quiver varieties $M_{m,\grl}(d,v)$ with generic $(m,\grl)$. To do it we describe a set of generators of the projective ring of a quiver variety. We also prove connectness for the smooth quiver variety $M(d,v)$ and normality for $M_0(d,v)$ in the case of a quiver of finite type and $d-v$ a regular weight.
We prove that for every reductive group G with a maximal torus T and the Weyl group W there is a natural normalization map chi from T^N/W to an irreducible component of the G-character variety of Z^N. We prove that chi is an isomorphism for all classical groups. Additionally, we prove that even though there are no irreducible representations in the above mentioned irreducible component of the character variety for non-abelian G, the tangent spaces to it coincide with H^1(Z^N, Ad rho). Consequently, this irreducible component has the "Goldman" symplectic form for N=2, for which the combinatoria…
We show that an element $w$ of a finite Weyl group $W$ is rationally smooth if and only if the hyperplane arrangement $I$ associated to the inversion set of $w$ is inductively free, and the product $(d_1+1) \cdots (d_l+1)$ of the coexponents $d_1,\ldots,d_l$ is equal to the size of the Bruhat interval $[e,w]$, where $e$ is the identity in $W$. As part of the proof, we describe exactly when a rationally smooth element in a finite Weyl group has a chain Billey-Postnikov decomposition. For finite Coxeter groups, we show that chain Billey-Postnikov decompositions are connected with certain modular…
We establish a theorem computing the cohomology groups of line bundles on homogeneous ind-varieties $G/B$ for diagonal ind-groups $G$. The main difficulty in proving this analog of the classical Bott-Borel-Weil theorem is in defining an appropriate analog $W_B$ of the Weyl group so that the action of $W_B$ on weights of $G$ is compatible with the analog of the Demazure "action" of the Weyl group on the cohomology of line bundles.
These are expanded notes from lectures on the geometry of spherical varieties given in Sanya. We review some aspects of the geometry of spherical varieties. We first describe the structure of $B$-orbits. Using the local structure theorems, we describe the Picard group and the group of Weyl divisors and give some necessary conditions for smoothness. We later on consider $B$-stable curves and describe in details the structure of the Chow group of curves as well as the pairing between curves and divisors. Building on these results we give an explicit $B$-stable canonical divisor on any spherical …
We consider the T-equivariant cohomology of Bott-Samelson desingularisations of Schubert varieties in the flag manifold of a connected semi-simple complex algebraic group of adjoint type with maximal torus T. We construct a combinatorially pure (in the sense of T. Braden and R. Macpherson) sheaf on the Bruhat graph of the associated Weyl group such that its global sections give the T-equivariant cohomology of our Bott-Samelson resolution.
Let $X=\C^n$. In this paper we present an algorithm that computes the de Rham cohomology groups $H^i_{dR}(U,\C)$ where $U$ is the complement of an arbitrary Zariski-closed set $Y$ in $X$. Our algorithm is a merger of the algorithm given by T.~Oaku and N.~Takayama (\cite{O-T2}), who considered the case where $Y$ is a hypersurface, and our methods from \cite{W-1} for the computation of local cohomology. We further extend the algorithm to compute de Rham cohomology groups with support $H^i_{dR,Z}(U,\C)$ where again $U$ is an arbitrary Zariski-open subset of $X$ and $Z$ is an arbitrary Zariski-clo…
In this article, we give a survey of Geometric Invariant Theory for Toric Varieties, and present an application to the Einstein-Weyl Geometry. We compute the image of the Minitwistor space of the Honda metrics as a categorical quotient according to the most efficient linearization. The result is the complex weighted projective space CP_(1,1,2). We also find and classify all possible quotients.
Let L be k((ε)), where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field with q elements and εis an indeterminate, and let σbe the Frobenius automorphism. Let G be a split connected reductive group over the fixed field of σin L, and let I be the Iwahori subgroup of G(L) associated to a given Borel subgroup of G. Let W be the extended affine Weyl group of G. Given x in W and b in G(L), we have some subgroup of G(L) that acts on the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety X_x(b) = {gI in G(L)/I : g^{-1}bσ(g) is in IxI} and hence a representation of this subgroup on the Borel-Moore homology of the variety. We i…
We characterize the nonemptiness and dimension problems for an affine Deligne-Lusztig variety $X_x(b)$ in the affine flag variety in terms of galleries that are positively folded with respect to a chimney. If the parabolic subgroup associated to the Newton point of b has rank 1, we then prove nonemptiness for a certain class of Iwahori-Weyl group elements x by explicitly constructing such galleries.
Let $T$ be a maximal torus of a semisimple complex algebraic group, $\mathrm{BS}(s)$ be the Bott-Samelson variety for a sequence of simple reflections $s$ and $\mathrm{BS}(s)^T$ be the set of $T$-fixed points of $\mathrm{BS}(s)$. We prove the tensor product decompositions for the image of the restriction $H^\bullet_T(\mathrm{BS}(s),k)\to H_T^\bullet(X,k)$, where $X\subset\mathrm{BS}(s)^T$ is defined by some special not overlapping equations $γ_iγ_{i+1}\cdotsγ_j=w_{i,j}$ with right-hand sides belonging to the Weyl group.
We compute the space of Poisson traces on symmetric powers of affine symplectic varieties. In the case of symplectic vector spaces, we also consider the quotient by the diagonal translation action, which includes the quotient singularities C^{2n-2}/S_n associated to the type A Weyl group S_n and its reflection representation C^{n-1}. We also compute the full structure of the natural D-module, previously defined by the authors, whose solution space over algebraic distributions identifies with the space of Poisson traces. As a consequence, we deduce bounds on the numbers of finite-dimensional ir…
Let $G$ be a reductive complex algebraic group, $T$ a maximal torus of $G$, $B$ a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing $T$, $Φ$ the root system of $G$ w.r.t. $T$, $W$ the Weyl group of $Φ$. Denote by $\Fo = G/B$ the flag variety, by $X_w$ the Schubert subvariety of $\Fo$ associated with an element $w\in W$, and by $C_w$ the tangent cone to $X_w$ at the point $p = eB$. Then $C_w$ is a subscheme of the tangent space $T_pX_w\subseteq T_p\Fo$. Suppose $w$, $w'$ are distinct involutions in $W$. Using the so-called Kostant--Kumar polynomials, we show that if every irreducible component of $Φ$ is of type…
In this paper, we study affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties $X_w(b)$ when the finite part of the element $w$ in the Iwahori--Weyl group is a partial $σ$-Coxeter element. We show that such $w$ is a cordial element and $X_w(b) \neq \emptyset$ if and only if $b$ satisfies a certain Hodge--Newton indecomposability condition. The main result of this paper is that for such $w$ and $b$, $X_w(b)$ has a simple geometric structure: the $σ$-centralizer of $b$ acts transitively on the set of irreducible components of $X_w(b)$; and each irreducible component is an iterated fibration over a classical Deligne-…
Let $\mbox{IG}(k,2n+1)$ be the odd symplectic Grassmannian. It is a quasi-ho\-mo\-ge\-neous space with homogeneous-like behavior. A very limited description of curve neighborhoods of Schubert varieties in $\mbox{IG}(k,2n+1)$ was used by Mihalcea and the second named author to prove an (equivariant) quantum Chevalley rule. In this paper we give a full description of the irreducible components of curve neighborhoods in terms of the Hecke product of (appropriate) Weyl group elements, $k$-strict partitions, and BC-partitions. The latter set of partitions respect the Bruhat order with inclusions. O…
