We establish the vanishing for non-trivial unitary representations of the bounded cohomology of SL_d up to the rank. It holds more generally for uniformly bounded representations on superreflexive spaces. The same results are obtained for lattices. We also prove that the real bounded cohomology of any lattice is invariant in the same range.
In this paper, we get an elementary and important lemma(See Lemma 3.2) which is about pushout and pullback of modules. And we prove a weak form of a long open conjecture on vanishing of group cohomology for blocks.
We obtain vanishing ranges for the mod $p$ cohomology of alternating subgroups of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups. Here a Coxeter group $W$ is $p$-free if the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every pair of Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$. Our result generalizes those for alternating groups formerly proved by Kleshchev-Nakano and Burichenko. As a byproduct, we obtain vanishing ranges for the twisted cohomology of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups with coefficients in the sign representations. In addition, a weak version of the main result is proved for a certain class of infinite Coxet…
We extend Ballmann and Swiatkowski's work on $L^2$-cohomology of groups acting on simplicial complexes and provide further vanishing results of $L^2$-cohomologies. In particular, we give a new criterion for property (T) for groups acting on an n-dimensional simplcial complex.
Given a group satisfying sufficient finiteness properties, we discuss a group algebra criterion for vanishing of all its cohomology groups with unitary coefficients in a certain degree.
We prove that there is a bound on the dimension of the first cohomology group of a finite group with coefficients in an absolutely irreducible in characteristic p in terms of the sectional p-rank of the group.
We show that the continuous $L^p$-cohomology of locally compact second countable groups is a quasi-isometric invariant. As an application, we prove partial results supporting a positive answer to a question asked by M.~Gromov, suggesting a classical behaviour of continuous $L^p$-cohomology of simple real Lie groups. In addition to quasi-isometric invariance, the ingredients are a spectral sequence argument and Pansu's vanishing results for real hyperbolic spaces. In the best adapted cases of simple Lie groups, we obtain nearly half of the relevant vanishings.
We investigate bounds on the dimension of cohomology groups for finite groups acting on an irreducible kG-module for G a finite group of bound sectional p-rank and k an algebraically closed field of characteristic p.
We prove vanishing of cohomology with coefficients in representations on a large class of Banach spaces for a group acting "nicely" on a simplicial complexes based on spectral properties of the 1-dimensional links of the simplicial complex.
We provide new computations in bounded cohomology: A group is boundedly acyclic if its bounded cohomology with trivial real coefficients is zero in all positive degrees. We show that there exists a continuum of finitely generated non-amenable boundedly acyclic groups and construct a finitely presented non-amenable boundedly acyclic group. On the other hand, we construct a continuum of finitely generated groups, whose bounded cohomology has uncountable dimension in all degrees greater than or equal to~$2$, and a concrete finitely presented one. Countable non-amenable groups with these two extre…
We study vanishing results for L2-cohomology of countable groups under the presence of subgroups that satisfy some weak normality condition. As a consequence we show that the L2-Betti numbers of SL(n,R) for any infinite integral domain R vanish below degree n-1. We also give a uniform proof for the vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of Thompson's groups F and T.
We obtain non-vanishing of group $L^p$-cohomology of Lie groups for $p$ large and when the degree is equal to the rank of the group. This applies both to semisimple and to some suitable solvable groups. In particular, it confirms that Gromov's question on vanishing below the rank is formulated optimally. To achieve this, some complementary vanishings are combined with the use of spectral sequences. To deduce the semisimple case from the solvable one, we also need comparison results between various theories for $L^p$-cohomology, allowing the use of quasi-isometry invariance.
Let $G({\mathbb F}_{q})$ be a finite Chevalley group defined over the field of $q=p^{r}$ elements, and $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. A fundamental open and elusive problem has been the computation of the cohomology ring $\opH^{\bullet}(G({\mathbb F}_{q}),k)$. In this paper we determine initial vanishing ranges which improves upon known results. For root systems of type $A_n$ and $C_n$, the first non-trivial cohomology classes are determined when $p$ is larger than the Coxeter number (larger than twice the Coxeter number for type $A_n$ with $n>1$ and $r >1$). In …
We prove vanishing results for Lie groups and algebraic groups (over any local field) in bounded cohomology. The main result is a vanishing below twice the rank for semi-simple groups. Related rigidity results are established for S-arithmetic groups and groups over global fields. We also establish vanishing and cohomological rigidity results for products of general locally compact groups and their lattices.
The computation of the cohomology for finite groups of Lie type in the describing characteristic is a challenging and difficult problem. In earlier work, the authors constructed an induction functor which takes modules over the finite group of Lie type to modules for the ambient algebraic group G. In particular this functor when applied to the trivial module yields a natural G-filtration. This filtration was utilized in the earlier work to determine the first non-trivial cohomology class when the underlying root system is of type A_{n} or C_{n}. In this paper the authors extend these results t…
We study exactness of groups and establish a characterization of exact groups in terms of the existence of a continuous linear operator, called an invariant expectation, whose properties make it a weak counterpart of an invariant mean on a group. We apply this operator to show that exactness of a finitely generated group $G$ implies the vanishing of the bounded cohomology of $G$ with coefficients in a new class of modules, which are defined using the Hopf algebra structure of $\ell_1(G)$.
We prove that the first reduced cohomology with values in a mixing Lp-representation, p larger than 1, vanishes for a class of amenable groups including connected amenable Lie groups. In particular this solves for this class of amenable groups a conjecture of Gromov saying that every finitely generated amenable group has no first reduced lp-cohomology. As a byproduct, we prove a conjecture by Pansu. Namely, the first reduced Lp-cohomology on homogeneous, closed at infinity, Riemannian manifolds vanishes. We also prove that a Gromov hyperbolic geodesic metric measure space with bounded geometry…
We prove that for any prime $p$ the finite $p$-groups of fixed coclass have only finitely many different mod-$p$ cohomology rings between them. This was conjectured by Carlson; we prove it by first proving a stronger version for groups of bounded rank.
We explore the Mayer-Vietoris sequence developed by Chiswell for the fundamental group of a graph of groups when vertex groups satisfy some vanishing assumption on the first cohomology (e.g. property (T), or vanishing of the first $\ell^2$-Betti number). We characterize the vanishing of first reduced cohomology of unitary representations when vertex stabilizer have property (T). We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the vanishing of the first $\ell^2$-Betti number. We also study the associated Haagerup cocycle and show that it vanishes in first reduced cohomology precisely when the a…
We show that it is impossible to algorithmically decide if the l^2-cohomology of the universal cover of a finite CW complex is trivial, even if we only consider complexes whose fundamental group is equal to the elementary amenable group (Z_2 \wr Z)^3. A corollary of the proof is that there is no algorithm which decides if an element of the integral group ring of the group (\Z_2 \wr Z)^4 is a zero-divisor. On the other hand, we show, assuming some standard conjectures, that such an algorithm exists for the integral group ring of any group with a decidable word problem and a bound on the sizes o…
We give a sufficient condition for parameter rigidity of actions of solvable Lie groups, by vanishing of (uncountably many) first cohomologies of the orbit foliations. In some cases, we can prove that vanishing of finitely many cohomologies is sufficient. For this purpose we use a rigidity property of quasiisometry. As an application we prove some actions of 2-step solvable Lie groups on mapping tori are parameter rigid. Special cases of these actions are considered in a paper of Matsumoto and Mitsumatsu. We also remark on the relation between transitive locally free actions of solvable Lie gr…
Several well-known open questions (such as: are all groups sofic/hyperlinear?) have a common form: can all groups be approximated by asymptotic homomorphisms into the symmetric groups $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$ (in the sofic case) or the finite dimensional unitary groups ${\rm U}(n)$ (in the hyperlinear case)? In the case of ${\rm U}(n)$, the question can be asked with respect to different metrics and norms. This paper answers, for the first time, one of these versions, showing that there exist fintely presented groups which are not approximated by ${\rm U}(n)$ with respect to the Frobenius norm $\|T\|…
In this paper, it is shown that the reduced $\ell^p$-cohomology is trivial for a class of finitely generated amenable groups called transport amenable. These groups are those for which there exist a sequence of measures $ξ_n$ converging to a left-invariant mean and such that the transport cost between $ξ_n$ displaced by multiplication on the right by a fixed element and $ξ_n$ is bounded in $n$. This class contains groups with controlled Følner sequence (such as polycylic groups) as well as some wreath products. Note: Examples 5.1 and 5.2 are incorrect (in particular $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$…
A theorem of Delorme states that every unitary representation of a connected Lie group with nontrivial reduced first cohomology has a finite-dimensional subrepresentation. More recently Shalom showed that such a property is inherited by cocompact lattices and stable under coarse equivalence among amenable countable discrete groups. We give a new geometric proof of Delorme's theorem which extends to a larger class of groups, including solvable $p$-adic algebraic groups, and finitely generated solvable groups with finite Prüfer rank. Moreover all our results apply to isometric representations in…
We prove the vanishing of the bounded cohomology of lamplighter groups for a wide range of coefficients. This implies the same vanishing for a number of groups with self-similarity properties, such as Thompson's group F. In particular, these groups are boundedly acyclic. Our method is ergodic and applies to large transformation groups where the Mather-Matsumoto-Morita method sometimes fails because not all are acyclic in the usual sense.
Let $M\stackrel{ρ_0}{\curvearrowleft}S$ be a $C^\infty$ locally free action of a connected simply connected solvable Lie group $S$ on a closed manifold $M$. Roughly speaking, $ρ_0$ is parameter rigid if any $C^\infty$ locally free action of $S$ on $M$ having the same orbits as $ρ_0$ is $C^\infty$ conjugate to $ρ_0$. In this paper we prove two types of result on parameter rigidity. First let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center of real rank at least $2$ without compact factors nor simple factors locally isomorphic to $\mathrm{SO}_0(n,1)$ $(n\geq2)$ or $\mathrm{SU}(n,1)$ $(…
