We show vanishing of the second $L^p$-cohomology group for most semisimple algebraic groups of rank at least 3 over local fields. More precisely, we show this result for $\SL(4)$, for simple groups of rank $\geq 4$ that are not of exceptional type or of type $D_4$ and for all semisimple, non-simple groups of rank $\geq 3$. Our methods work for large values of $p$ in the real case and for all $p>1$ in the non-Archimedean case. This result points towards a positive answer to Gromov's question on vanishing of $L^p$-cohomology of semisimple groups for all $p>1$ in degrees below the rank. The methods consist in using a spectral sequence à la Bourdon-Rémy, adapting a version of Mautner's phenomenon from Cornulier-Tessera and concluding thanks to a combinatorial case-by-case study of classical simple groups.
Let G be a finite simple group of Lie type. In this paper we study characters of G that vanish at the non-semisimple elements and whose degree is equal to the order of a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. Such characters can be viewed as a natural generalization of the Steinberg character. For groups G of small rank we also determine the characters of this degree vanishing only at the non-identity unipotent elements.
We obtain non-vanishing of group $L^p$-cohomology of Lie groups for $p$ large and when the degree is equal to the rank of the group. This applies both to semisimple and to some suitable solvable groups. In particular, it confirms that Gromov's question on vanishing below the rank is formulated optimally. To achieve this, some complementary vanishings are combined with the use of spectral sequences. To deduce the semisimple case from the solvable one, we also need comparison results between various theories for $L^p$-cohomology, allowing the use of quasi-isometry invariance.
For a connected semisimple group G over the field of real numbers R, using a method of Onishchik and Vinberg, we compute the first Galois cohomology set H^1(R,G) in terms of Kac labelings of the affine Dynkin diagram of G.
Let G be a connected, compact, semisimple algebraic group over the field of real numbers R. Using Kac diagrams, we describe combinatorially the first Galois cohomology sets H^1(R,H) for all inner forms H of G. As examples, we compute explicitly H^1 for all real forms of the simply connected group of type E_7 (which has been known since 2013) and for all real forms of half-spin groups of type D_{2k} (which seems to be new).
We extend Ballmann and Swiatkowski's work on $L^2$-cohomology of groups acting on simplicial complexes and provide further vanishing results of $L^2$-cohomologies. In particular, we give a new criterion for property (T) for groups acting on an n-dimensional simplcial complex.
We show that the continuous $L^p$-cohomology of locally compact second countable groups is a quasi-isometric invariant. As an application, we prove partial results supporting a positive answer to a question asked by M.~Gromov, suggesting a classical behaviour of continuous $L^p$-cohomology of simple real Lie groups. In addition to quasi-isometric invariance, the ingredients are a spectral sequence argument and Pansu's vanishing results for real hyperbolic spaces. In the best adapted cases of simple Lie groups, we obtain nearly half of the relevant vanishings.
Let $G({\mathbb F}_{q})$ be a finite Chevalley group defined over the field of $q=p^{r}$ elements, and $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. A fundamental open and elusive problem has been the computation of the cohomology ring $\opH^{\bullet}(G({\mathbb F}_{q}),k)$. In this paper we determine initial vanishing ranges which improves upon known results. For root systems of type $A_n$ and $C_n$, the first non-trivial cohomology classes are determined when $p$ is larger than the Coxeter number (larger than twice the Coxeter number for type $A_n$ with $n>1$ and $r >1$). We prove vanishing results for Lie groups and algebraic groups (over any local field) in bounded cohomology. The main result is a vanishing below twice the rank for semi-simple groups. Related rigidity results are established for S-arithmetic groups and groups over global fields. We also establish vanishing and cohomological rigidity results for products of general locally compact groups and their lattices.
Given a group satisfying sufficient finiteness properties, we discuss a group algebra criterion for vanishing of all its cohomology groups with unitary coefficients in a certain degree.
In this paper, we get an elementary and important lemma(See Lemma 3.2) which is about pushout and pullback of modules. And we prove a weak form of a long open conjecture on vanishing of group cohomology for blocks.
We prove vanishing of cohomology with coefficients in representations on a large class of Banach spaces for a group acting "nicely" on a simplicial complexes based on spectral properties of the 1-dimensional links of the simplicial complex.
We establish the vanishing for non-trivial unitary representations of the bounded cohomology of SL_d up to the rank. It holds more generally for uniformly bounded representations on superreflexive spaces. The same results are obtained for lattices. We also prove that the real bounded cohomology of any lattice is invariant in the same range.
We provide new computations in bounded cohomology: A group is boundedly acyclic if its bounded cohomology with trivial real coefficients is zero in all positive degrees. We show that there exists a continuum of finitely generated non-amenable boundedly acyclic groups and construct a finitely presented non-amenable boundedly acyclic group. On the other hand, we construct a continuum of finitely generated groups, whose bounded cohomology has uncountable dimension in all degrees greater than or equal to~$2$, and a concrete finitely presented one. Countable non-amenable groups with these two extre…
We give a criterion for the Kostant-Kirillov form on an adjoint orbit in a real semisimple Lie group to be exact. We explicitly compute the second cohomology of all the nilpotent adjoint orbits in every complex simple Lie algebras.
We study vanishing results for L2-cohomology of countable groups under the presence of subgroups that satisfy some weak normality condition. As a consequence we show that the L2-Betti numbers of SL(n,R) for any infinite integral domain R vanish below degree n-1. We also give a uniform proof for the vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of Thompson's groups F and T.
We study equicontinuous actions of semisimple groups and some generalizations. We prove that any such action is universally closed, and in particular proper. We derive various applications, both old and new, including closedness of continuous homomorphisms, nonexistence of weaker topologies, metric ergodicity of transitive actions and vanishing of matrix coefficients for reflexive (more generally: WAP) representations.
We compute L2-invariants of certain nonuniform lattices in semisimple Lie groups by means of the Borel-Serre compactification of arithmetically defined locally symmetric spaces. The main results give new estimates for Novikov-Shubin numbers and vanishing L2-torsion for lattices in groups with even deficiency. We discuss applications to Gromov's Zero-in-the-Spectrum Conjecture as well as to a proportionality conjecture for the L2-torsion of measure equivalent groups.
We obtain vanishing ranges for the mod $p$ cohomology of alternating subgroups of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups. Here a Coxeter group $W$ is $p$-free if the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every pair of Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$. Our result generalizes those for alternating groups formerly proved by Kleshchev-Nakano and Burichenko. As a byproduct, we obtain vanishing ranges for the twisted cohomology of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups with coefficients in the sign representations. In addition, a weak version of the main result is proved for a certain class of infinite Coxet…
We prove surjectivity of the comparison map from continuous bounded cohomology to continuous cohomology for Hermitian Lie groups with finite center. For general semisimple Lie groups with finite center, the same argument shows that the image of the comparison map contains all the even generators. Our proof uses a Hirzebruch type proportionality principle in combination with Gromov's results on boundedness of primary characteristic classes and classical results of Cartan and Borel on the cohomology of compact homogeneous spaces.
We study exactness of groups and establish a characterization of exact groups in terms of the existence of a continuous linear operator, called an invariant expectation, whose properties make it a weak counterpart of an invariant mean on a group. We apply this operator to show that exactness of a finitely generated group $G$ implies the vanishing of the bounded cohomology of $G$ with coefficients in a new class of modules, which are defined using the Hopf algebra structure of $\ell_1(G)$.
