It is well known that permutations avoiding any 3-length pattern are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. If the three patterns 123, 132 and 213 are avoided at the same time we obtain a class of permutations enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. We start from these permutations and make one or two forbidden patterns disappear by suitably "generalizing" them. In such a way we find several classes of permutations enumerated by integer sequences which lay between the Fibonacci and Catalan numbers. For each class, we provide the generating function according to the length of the permutations. Moreover, as a result, we introduce a sort of "continuity" among the number sequences enumerating these classes of permutations.
We use the inversion of coefficient arrays to define dual polynomials to the Fibonacci and Catalan-Fibonacci polynomials, and we explore the properties of these new polynomials sequences. Many of the arrays involved are Riordan arrays. Direct links to the counting of Motzkin paths by different statistics emerge.
We study certain series with Catalan numbers and reciprocal Catalan numbers, respectively, and provide seemingly new closed form evaluations of these series with Fibonacci (Lucas) entries. In addition, we state some combinatorial sums that can be inferred from the series.
This (partly expository) paper originated from the study of Hankel determinants of convolution powers of Catalan numbers and of Narayana polynomials. This led to some Hankel determinants of signed Catalan numbers whose values are multiples of Fibonacci numbers and to some Hankel determinants of signed central binomial coefficients whose values are multiples of Lucas numbers. Most proofs are computational but we also include a combinatorial one due to Christian Krattenthaler. Finally we formulate some conjectures.
We present an algorithmic mapping from permutations of length dn to labeled n-node d-ary trees and back again. Given such a bijection, one can interpret each of the factorials in the formula for the Catalan numbers as a count of permutations.
In this note, we present some basic properties of $q$-Fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the $q$-golden ratio and Catalan numbers. We then use this relationship to give a short proof of a combinatorial identity.
The notion of $(a,b)$-cores is closely related to rational $(a,b)$ Dyck paths due to Anderson's bijection, and thus the number of $(a,a+1)$-cores is given by the Catalan number $C_a$. Recent research shows that $(a,a+1)$ cores with distinct parts are enumerated by another important sequence- Fibonacci numbers $F_a$. In this paper, we consider the abacus description of $(a,b)$-cores to introduce the natural grading and generalize this result to $(a,as+1)$-cores. We also use the bijection with Dyck paths to count the number of $(2k-1,2k+1)$-cores with distinct parts. We give a second grading to …
This paper enumerates all juxtaposition classes of the form "Av($abc$) next to Av($xy$)", where $abc$ is a permutation of length three and $xy$ is a permutation of length two. We use Dyck paths decorated by sequences of points to represent elements from such a juxtaposition class. Context-free grammars are then used to enumerate these decorated Dyck paths.
For each positive integer $k$, we consider five well-studied posets defined on the set of Dyck paths of semilength $k$. We prove that uniquely sorted permutations avoiding various patterns are equinumerous with intervals in these posets. While most of our proofs are bijective, some use generating trees and generating functions. We end with several conjectures.
We introduce and characterise grid classes, which are natural generalisations of other well-studied permutation classes. This characterisation allows us to give a new, short proof of the Fibonacci dichotomy: the number of permutations of length n in a permutation class is either at least as large as the nth Fibonacci number or is eventually polynomial.
In this paper, we construct bijections between Dyck paths, noncrossing partitions, and 231-avoiding permutations, which send the area statistic on Dyck paths to the inversion number on noncrossing partitions and on 231-avoiding permutations. This bijection has the additional property that it simultaneously sends the major index on Dyck paths to the sum of the major index and the inverse major index on noncrossing partitions and on 231-avoiding permutations, respectively. Moreover, we provide generalizations of these constructions to the group of signed permutations.
A permutation $π\in S_n$ is said to {\it avoid} a permutation $σ\in S_k$ whenever $π$ contains no subsequence with all of the same pairwise comparisons as $σ$. For any set $R$ of permutations, we write $S_n(R)$ to denote the set of permutations in $S_n$ which avoid every permutation in $R$. In 1985 Simion and Schmidt showed that $|S_n(132, 213, 123)|$ is equal to the Fibonacci number $F_{n+1}$. In this paper we generalize this result in several ways. We first use a result of Mansour to show that for any permutation $τ$ in a certain infinite family of permutations, $|S_n(132, 213, τ)|$ is given…
A generalized Catalan matrix $(a_{n,k})_{n,k\ge 0}$ is generated by two seed sequences $\mathbf{s}=(s_0,s_1,\ldots)$ and $\mathbf{t}=(t_1,t_2,\ldots)$ together with a recurrence relation. By taking $s_\ell=2\ell+1$ and $t_\ell=\ell^2$ we can interpret $a_{n,k}$ as the number of partial permutations, which are $n\times n$ $0,1$-matrices of $k$ zero rows with at most one $1$ in each row or column. In this paper we prove that most of fundamental statistics and some set-valued statistics on permutations can also be defined on partial permutations and be encoded in the seed sequences. Results on tw…
Following Benjamin et al., a matrix with entries being sums of two neighbouring Catalan numbers is considered. Its LU-decomposition is given, by guessing the results and later prove it by computer algebra, with lots of human help. Specializing a parameter, the determinant turns out to be a Fibonacci number with odd index, confirming earlier results, obtained back then by combinatorial methods.
In a recent paper, Goyt and Sagan studied distributions of certain set partition statistics over pattern restricted sets of set partitions that were counted by the Fibonacci numbers. Their study produced a class of $q$-Fibonacci numbers, which they related to $q$-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and Cigler. In this paper we will study the distributions of some Mahonian statistics over pattern restricted sets of permutations. We will give bijective proofs connecting some of our $q$-Fibonacci numbers to those of Carlitz, Cigler, Goyt and Sagan. We encode these permutations as words and use a…
Results of this paper concern $n$-determinants which we defined in the paper \cite{jan}. In the paper \cite{jabo}, $2$-determinants are considered. In this paper, we extend results from \cite{jabo} on $n$-determinants by proving that Cassini, d'Ocagne, Catalan and Vajda identities may be extended to hold for $n$-step Fibonacci numbers.
We calculate moments of the so-called Kesten distribution by means of the expansion of the denominator of the density of this distribution and then integrate all summands with respect to the semicircle distribution. By comparing this expression with the formulae for the moments of Kesten's distribution obtained by other means, we find identities involving polynomials whose power coefficients are closely related to Catalan numbers, Catalan triangles, binomial coefficients. Finally, as applications of these identities we obtain various interesting relations between the aforementioned numbers, al…
We prove that $|Av_n(231,312,1432)|$, $|Av_n(312,321,1342)|$ $|Av_n(231,312,4321,21543)|$, and $ |Av_n(321,231,4123,21534)|$, are all equal to $F_{n+1} - 1$ where $F_n$ is the $n$-th Fibonacci number using the convention $F_0 = F_1 = 1$ and $Av_n(S)$ is the set of all permutations of length $n$ that avoid all of the patterns in the set $S$. To do this, we characterize the structures of the permutations in these sets in terms of Fibonacci permutations. Then, we further quantify the structures using statistics such as inversion number and a statistic that measures the length of Fibonacci subsequ…
In 1990 West conjectured that there are $2(3n)!/((n+1)!(2n+1)!)$ two-stack sortable permutations on $n$ letters. This conjecture was proved analytically by Zeilberger in 1992. Later, Dulucq, Gire, and Guibert gave a combinatorial proof of this conjecture. In the present paper we study generating functions for the number of two-stack sortable permutations on $n$ letters avoiding (or containing exactly once) 132 and avoiding (or containing exactly once) an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on $k$ letters. In several interesting cases this generating function can be expressed in terms of the generating f…
Given a permutation $f$, we study the positroid Catalan number $C_f$ defined to be the torus-equivariant Euler characteristic of the associated open positroid variety. We introduce a class of repetition-free permutations and show that the corresponding positroid Catalan numbers count Dyck paths avoiding a convex subset of the rectangle. We show that any convex subset appears in this way. Conjecturally, the associated $q,t$-polynomials coincide with the generalized $q,t$-Catalan numbers that recently appeared in relation to the shuffle conjecture, flag Hilbert schemes, and Khovanov-Rozansky hom…

In recent years there has been much interest in certain subcubes of hypercubes, namely Fibonacci cubes and Lucas cubes (and their generalized versions). In this article we consider online routing of linear permutations on these cubes. The model of routing we use regards edges as bi-directional, and we do not allow queues of length greater than one. Messages start out at different vertices, and in movements synchronized with a clock, move to an adjacent vertex or remain where they are, so that at the next stage there is still exactly one message per vertex. This is the routing model we defined …
The Collatz map is defined for a positive even integer as half that integer, and for a positive odd integer as that integer threefold, plus one. The Collatz conjecture states that when the map is iterated the number one is eventually reached. We study permutations that arise as sequences from this iteration. We show that permutations of this type of length up to 14 are enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. Beyond that excess permutations appear. We will explain the appearance of these excess permutations and give an upper bound on the exact enumeration.
The notion of a mesh pattern was introduced recently, but it has already proved to be a useful tool for description purposes related to sets of permutations. In this paper we study eight mesh patterns of small lengths. In particular, we link avoidance of one of the patterns to the harmonic numbers, while for three other patterns we show their distributions on 132-avoiding permutations are given by the Catalan triangle. Also, we show that two specific mesh patterns are Wilf-equivalent. As a byproduct of our studies, we define a new set of sequences counted by the Catalan numbers and provide a r…
We show that the Eulerian-Catalan numbers enumerate Dyck permutations. We provide two proofs for this fact, the first using the geometry of alcoved polytopes and the second a direct combinatorial proof via an Eulerian-Catalan analogue of the Chung-Feller theorem.
The aim of this paper is two-fold. We first prove several new interpretations of a kind of $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers along with their corresponding $γ$-expansions using pattern avoiding permutations. Secondly, we give a complete characterization of certain $(-1)$-phenomenon for each subset of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length three, and discuss their $q$-analogues utilizing the newly obtained $q$-$γ$-expansions, as well as the continued fraction of a quint-variate generating function due to Shin and the fourth author. Moreover, we enumerate the alternating permutations avoiding si…
We examine the poset $P$ of 132-avoiding $n$-permutations ordered by descents. We show that this poset is the "coarsening" of the well-studied poset $Q$ of noncrossing partitions . In other words, if $x<y$ in $Q$, then $f(y)<f(x)$ in $P$, where $f$ is the canonical bijection from the set of noncrossing partitions onto that of 132-avoiding permutations. This enables us to prove many properties of $P$.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First we answer to a question asked by Steingrimsson and Williams about certain permutation tableaux: we construct a bijection between binary trees and the so-called Catalan tableaux. These tableaux are certain Ferrers (or Young) diagrams filled with some 0's and 1's, satisfying a certain hook condition, and are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. They form a subclass of the permutation tableaux, enumerated by n!, introduced by Postnikov in his study of totally non negative Grassmannians and networks. Secondly we relate this new Catalan bijection with the t…
We study a certain family of infinite series with reciprocal Catalan numbers. We first evaluate two special candidates of the family in closed form, where we also present some Catalan-Fibonacci relations. Then we focus on the general properties of the family and prove explicit formulas, including two types of integral representations.
A positroid is the matroid of a matrix whose maximal minors are all nonnegative. Given a permutation $w$ in $S_n$, the matroid of a generic $n \times n$ matrix whose non-zero entries in row $i$ lie in columns $w(i)$ through $n+i$ is an example of a positroid. We enumerate the bases of such a positroid as a sum of certain products of Catalan numbers, each term indexed by the $123$-avoiding permutations above $w$ in Bruhat order. We also give a similar sum formula for their Tutte polynomials. These are both avatars of a structural result writing such a positroid as a disjoint union of matroids, …
We show an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations with given cycle types. We define annular $q$-Kreweras numbers, annular $q$-Narayana numbers, and annular $q$-Catalan number, all of which are polynomials in $q$. We then show that these polynomials exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations. We also show that a sum of annular $q$-Kreweras numbers becomes an annular $q$-Narayana number and a sum of $q$-Narayana numbers becomes an annular $q$-Catalan number.
A combinatorial structure, $\mathcal{F}$, with counting sequence $\{a_n\}_{n\ge 0}$ and ordinary generating function $G_\mathcal{F}=\sum_{n\ge0} a_n x^n$, is positive algebraic if $G_\mathcal{F}$ satisfies a polynomial equation $G_\mathcal{F}=\sum_{k=0}^N p_k(x)\,G_\mathcal{F}^k $ and $p_k(x)$ is a polynomial in $x$ with non-negative integer coefficients. We show that every such family is associated with a normed $\mathbf{n}$-magma. An $\mathbf{n}$-magma with $\mathbf{n}=(n_1,\dots, n_k)$ is a pair $\mathcal{M}$ and $\mathcal{F}$ where $\mathcal{M}$ is a set of combinatorial structures and $\m…
We give multiple proofs of two formulas concerning the enumeration of permutations avoiding a monotone consecutive pattern with a certain value for the inverse peak number or inverse left peak number statistic. The enumeration in both cases is given by a sequence related to Fibonacci numbers. We also show that there is exactly one permutation whose inverse peak number is zero among all permutations with any fixed descent composition, and we give a few elementary consequences of this fact. Our proofs involve generating functions, symmetric functions, regular expressions, and monomino-domino til…
The moments of the Lucas polynomials and of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind are (multiples of) central binomial coefficients and the moments of the Fibonacci polynomials and of the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind are Catalan numbers. In this survey paper we present some generalizations of these results together with various q-analogues.
The Catalan numbers constitute one of the most important sequences in combinatorics. Catalan objects have been generalized in various directions, including the classical Fuss-Catalan objects and the rational Catalan generalization of Armstrong-Rhoades-Williams. We propose a wider generalization of these families indexed by a composition $s$ which is motivated by the combinatorics of planar rooted trees; when $s=(2,...,2)$ and $s=(k+1,...,k+1)$ we recover the classical Catalan and Fuss-Catalan combinatorics, respectively. Furthermore, to each pair $(a,b)$ of relatively prime numbers we can asso…
We study $q$-analogues of $k$-Fibonacci numbers that arise from weighted tilings of an $n\times1$ board with tiles of length at most $k$. The weights on our tilings arise naturally out of distributions of permutations statistics and set partitions statistics. We use these $q$-analogues to produce $q$-analogues of identities involving $k$-Fibonacci numbers. This is a natural extension of results of the first author and Sagan on set partitions and the first author and Mathisen on permutations. In this paper we give general $q$-analogues of $k$-Fibonacci identities for arbitrary weights that depe…
We investigate certain nonassociative binary operations that satisfy a four-parameter generalization of the associative law. From this we obtain variations of the ubiquitous Catalan numbers and connections to many interesting combinatorial objects such as binary trees, plane trees, lattice paths, and permutations.
The classical parking functions, counted by the Cayley number (n+1)^(n-1), carry a natural permutation representation of the symmetric group S_n in which the number of orbits is the n'th Catalan number. In this paper, we will generalize this setup to rational parking functions indexed by a pair (a,b) of coprime positive integers. We show that these parking functions, which are counted by b^(a-1), carry a permutation representation of S_a in which the number of orbits is a rational Catalan number. We compute the Frobenius characteristic of the S_a-module of (a,b)-parking functions. Next we prop…
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.
In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_…
The class of permutations that avoid the bivincular pattern (231, {1},{1}) is known to be enumerated by the Fishburn numbers. In this paper, we call them Fishburn permutations and study their pattern avoidance. For classical patterns of size 3, we give a complete enumerative picture for regular and indecomposable Fishburn permutations. For patterns of size 4, we focus on a Wilf equivalence class of Fishburn permutations that are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In addition, we also discuss a class enumerated by the binomial transform of the Catalan numbers and give conjectures for other equi…
Based on Bona's condition for the balanced property of the number of cycles of permutations, we give a general criterion for the balanced property in terms of the generating function of a statistic. We show that the q-derangement numbers and the q-Catalan numbers satisfy the balanced property.
Pattern avoiding machines were introduced recently by Claesson, Cerbai and Ferrari as a particular case of the two-stacks in series sorting device. They consist of two restricted stacks in series, ruled by a right-greedy procedure and the stacks avoid some specified patterns. Some of the obtained results have been further generalized to Cayley permutations by Cerbai, specialized to particular patterns by Defant and Zheng, or considered in the context of functions over the symmetric group by Berlow. In this work we study pattern avoiding machines where the first stack avoids a pair of patterns …
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these per…

We analyze the structure and enumerate Dumont permutations of the first and second kinds avoiding certain patterns or sets of patterns of length 3 and 4. Some cardinalities are given by Catalan numbers, powers of 2, little Schroeder numbers, and other known or related sequences.
Vincular and covincular patterns are generalizations of classical patterns allowing restrictions on the indices and values of the occurrences in a permutation. In this paper we study the integer sequences arising as the enumerations of permutations simultaneously avoiding a vincular and a covincular pattern, both of length 3, with at most one restriction. We see familiar sequences, such as the Catalan and Motzkin numbers, but also some previously unknown sequences which have close links to other combinatorial objects such as lattice paths and integer partitions. Where possible we include a gen…
In this paper, we study the combinatorial structures of straight and ordinary ménage permutations. Based on these structures, we prove four formulas. The first two formulas define a relationship between the ménage numbers and the Catalan numbers. The other two formulas count the ménage permutations by number of cycles.
To flatten a set partition (with apologies to Mathematica) means to form a permutation by erasing the dividers between its blocks. Of course, the result depends on how the blocks are listed. For the usual listing--increasing entries in each block and blocks arranged in increasing order of their first entries--we count the partitions of [n] whose flattening avoids a single 3-letter pattern. Five counting sequences arise: a null sequence, the powers of 2, the Fibonacci numbers, the Catalan numbers, and the binomial transform of the Catalan numbers.
Hexaflexagons were popularized by the late Martin Gardner in his first Scientific American column in 1956. Oakley and Wisner showed that they can be represented abstractly by certain recursively defined permutations called pats, and deduced that they are counted by the Catalan numbers. Counting pats by number of descents yields the curious identity Sum[1/(2n-2k+1)binom{2n-2k+1}{k}binom{2k}{n-k},k=0..n] = C(n), where only the middle third of the summands are nonzero.
