In this article we study percolation on the Cayley graph of a free product of groups.
The critical probability $p_c$ of a free product $G_1*G_2*...*G_n$ of groups is found as a solution of an equation involving only the expected subcritical cluster size of factor groups $G_1,G_2,...,G_n$. For finite groups these equations are polynomial and can be explicitly written down. The expected subcritical cluster size of the free product is also found in terms of the subcritical cluster sizes of the factors. In particular, we prove that $p_c$ for the Cayley graph of the modular group $\hbox{PSL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ (with the standard generators) is $.5199...$, the unique root of the polynomial $2p^5-6p^4+2p^3+4p^2-1$ in the interval $(0,1)$.
In the case when groups $G_i$ can be "well approximated" by a sequence of quotient groups, we show that the critical probabilities of the free product of these approximations converge to the critical probability of $G_1*G_2*...*G_n$ and the speed of convergence is exponential. Thus for residually finite groups, for example, one can restrict oneself to the case when each free factor is finite.
We show that the critical point, introduced by Schonmann, $p_{\mathrm{exp}}$ of the free product is just the minimum of $p_{\mathrm{exp}}$ for the factors.
We show that the critical probability for percolation on a d-regular non-amenable graph of large girth is close to the critical probability for percolation on an infinite d-regular tree. This is a special case of a conjecture due to O. Schramm on the locality of p_c. We also prove a finite analogue of the conjecture for expander graphs.
We prove that critical percolation has no infinite clusters almost surely on any unimodular quasi-transitive graph satisfying a return probability upper bound of the form $p_n(v,v) \leq \exp\left[-Ω(n^γ)\right]$ for some $γ>1/2$. The result is new in the case that the graph is of intermediate volume growth.
For horocyclic products of percolation subtrees of regular trees, we show almost sure amenability. Under a symmetry condition concerning the growth of the two percolation trees, we show the existence of an increasing Foelner sequence (which we call strong amenability).
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on the product graph of a regular tree and a line. We show that the triangle condition does not hold at the uniqueness threshold.
We prove that the critical percolation parameter for Finitary Random Interlacements (FRI) is continuous with respect to the path length parameter $T$. The proof uses a result which is interesting on its own right; equality of natural critical parameters for FRI percolation phase transition.
For the Gaussian free field on a $(d + 1)$-regular tree with $d \geq 2$, we study the percolative properties of its level sets in the critical and the near-critical regime. In particular, we show the continuity of the percolation probability, derive an exact symptotic tail estimate for the cardinality of the connected component of the critical level set, and describe the asymptotic behaviour of the percolation probability in the near-critical regime.
We show that there exists a connected graph G with subexponential volume growth such that critical percolation on the product of G with the line has infinitely many infinite clusters. We also give some conditions under which this cannot occur.
We consider a critical Bernoulli site percolation on the uniform infinite planar triangulation. We study the tail distributions of the peeling time, perimeter, and volume of the hull of a critical cluster. The exponents obtained here differs by a factor 2 from those computed previously by Angel and Curien (2015) in the case of critical site percolation on the uniform infinite half-plane triangulation.
We expand the critical point for site percolation on the $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice in terms of inverse powers of $2d$, and we obtain the first three terms rigorously. This is achieved using the lace expansion.
Consider an independent site percolation model with parameter $p \in (0,1)$ on $\Z^d,\ d\geq 2$ where there are only nearest neighbor bonds and long range bonds of length $k$ parallel to each coordinate axis. We show that the percolation threshold of such model converges to $p_c(\Z^{2d})$ when $k$ goes to infinity, the percolation threshold for ordinary (nearest neighbour) percolation on $\Z^{2d}$. We also generalize this result for models whose long range bonds have several lengths.
We use the lace expansion to prove an infra-red bound for site percolation on the hypercubic lattice in high dimension. This implies the triangle condition and allows us to derive several critical exponents that characterize mean-field behavior in high dimensions.
We extend Smirnov's proof of the existence and conformal invariance of the scaling limit of critical site-percolation on the triangular lattice to particular sequences of periodic graphs with more arbitrary large-scale structure, obtained by piecing together triangular regions of the triangular lattice. While not formally speaking a scaling limit statement (as the graphs are not rescaled versions of each other), the result is a weak form of universality for critical percolation.
The understanding of site percolation on the triangular lattice progressed greatly in the last decade. Smirnov proved conformal invariance of critical percolation, thus paving the way for the construction of its scaling limit. Recently, the scaling limit of near-critical percolation was also constructed by Garban, Pete and Schramm. The aim of this very modest contribution is to explain how these results imply the convergence, as p tends to p_c, of the Wulff crystal to a Euclidean disk. The main ingredient of the proof is the rotational invariance of the scaling limit of near-critical percolati…
We consider two-dimensional dependent dynamical site percolation where sites perform majority dynamics. We introduce the critical percolation function at time t as the infimum density with which one needs to begin in order to obtain an infinite open component at time t. We prove that, for any fixed time t, there is no percolation at criticality and that the critical percolation function is continuous. We also prove that, for any positive time, the percolation threshold is strictly smaller than the critical probability for independent site percolation.
We study the 2d-Ising model defined on finite boxes at temperatures that are below but very close from the critical point. When the temperature approaches the critical point and the size of the box grows fast enough, we establish large deviations estimates on FK-percolation events that concern the phenomenon of phase coexistence.
We give a self-contained and detailed presentation of Kesten's results that allow to relate critical and near-critical percolation on the triangular lattice. They constitute an important step in the derivation of the exponents describing the near-critical behavior of this model. For future use and reference, we also show how these results can be obtained in more general situations, and we state some new consequences.
We consider the percolation problem in the high-temperature Ising model on the two-dimensional square lattice at/near critical external fields. We show that all scaling relations, except a single hyperscaling relation, hold under the power law assumptions for the one-arm path and four-arm paths.
Bootstrap percolation on a graph is a deterministic process that iteratively enlarges a set of occupied sites by adjoining points with at least $θ$ occupied neighbors. The initially occupied set is random, given by a uniform product measure with a low density $p$. Our main focus is on this process on the product graph $\mathbb{Z}^2\times K_n^2$, where $K_n$ is a complete graph. We investigate how $p$ scales with $n$ so that a typical site is eventually occupied. Under critical scaling, the dynamics with even $θ$ exhibits a sharp phase transition, while odd $θ$ yields a gradual percolation tran…
In this paper we show the existence of a sharp threshold for the appearance of a giant component after percolation of Cartesian products of graphs under assumptions on their maximum degrees and their isoperimetric constants. In particular, this generalises a work of Ajtai, Komlós and Szemerédi from 1982 concerning percolation of the hypercube in high dimension.
We consider critical percolation on Galton-Watson trees and prove quenched analogues of classical theorems of critical branching processes. We show that the probability critical percolation reaches depth $n$ is asymptotic to a tree-dependent constant times $n^{-1}$. Similarly, conditioned on critical percolation reaching depth $n$, the number of vertices at depth $n$ in the critical percolation cluster almost surely converges in distribution to an exponential random variable with mean depending only on the offspring distribution. The incipient infinite cluster (IIC) is constructed for a.e. Gal…
We consider the Bernoulli percolation model in a finite box and we introduce an automatic control of the percolation probability, which is a function of the percolation configuration. For a suitable choice of this automatic control, the model is self-critical, i.e., the percolation probability converges to the critical point $p_c$ when the size of the box tends to infinity. We study here three simple examples of such models, involving the size of the largest cluster, the number of vertices connected to the boundary of the box, or the distribution of the cluster sizes.
We study gradient percolation for site percolation on the triangular lattice. This is a percolation model where the percolation probability depends linearly on the location of the site. We prove the results predicted by physicists for this model. More precisely, we describe the fluctuations of the interfaces around their (straight) scaling limits, and the expected and typical lengths of these interfaces. These results build on the recent results for critical percolation on this lattice by Smirnov, Lawler, Schramm and Werner, and on the scaling ideas developed by Kesten.
We continue our study of the chemical (graph) distance inside large critical percolation clusters in dimension two. We prove new estimates, which involve the three-arm probability, for the point-to-surface and point-to-point distances. We show that the point-to-point distance in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ between two points in the same critical percolation cluster has infinite second moment. We also give quantitative versions of our previous results comparing the length of the shortest crossing to that of the lowest crossing of a box.
Random graphs have played an instrumental role in modelling real-world networks arising from the internet topology, social networks, or even protein-interaction networks within cells. Percolation, on the other hand, has been the fundamental model for understanding robustness and spread of epidemics on these networks. From a mathematical perspective, percolation is one of the simplest models that exhibits phase transition, and fascinating features are observed around the critical point. In this thesis, we prove limit theorems about structural properties of the connected components obtained from…
The aim of this paper is to explore possible ways of extending Smirnov's proof of Cardy's formula for critical site-percolation on the triangular lattice to other cases (such as bond-percolation on the square lattice); the main question we address is that of the choice of the lattice embedding into the plane which gives rise to conformal invariance in the scaling limit. Even though we were not able to produce a complete proof, we believe that the ideas presented here go in the right direction.
We study invasion percolation in two dimensions. We compare connectivity properties of the origin's invaded region to those of (a) the critical percolation cluster of the origin and (b) the incipient infinite cluster. To exhibit similarities, we show that for any $k\geq1$, the $k$-point function of the first so-called pond has the same asymptotic behavior as the probability that $k$ points are in the critical cluster of the origin. More prominent, though, are the differences. We show that there are infinitely many ponds that contain many large disjoint $p_c$-open clusters. Further, for $k>1$, …
We consider the Cheeger constant $ϕ(n)$ of the giant component of supercritical bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d/n\mathbb{Z}^d$. We show that the variance of $ϕ(n)$ is bounded by $\fracξ{n^d}$, where $ξ$ is a positive constant that depends only on the dimension $d$ and the percolation parameter.
Using the randomized algorithm method developed by Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion (2019b), we exhibit sharp phase transition for the confetti percolation model. This provides an alternate proof, than that of Ahlberg, Tassion and Texeira (2018), for the critical parameter for percolation in this model to be $1/2$ when the radius of the underlying shapes for the distinct colours arise from the same distribution. In addition, we study the covered area fraction for this model, which is akin to the covered volume fraction in continuum percolation. Modulo a certain `transitivity condition', this …
We show that critical percolation on a product of two regular trees of degree $\ge$ 3 satisfies the triangle condition. The proof does not examine the degrees of vertices and is not "perturbative" in any sense. It relies on an unpublished lemma of Oded Schramm.
We prove that there exist natural generalizations of the classical bootstrap percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ that have non-trivial critical probabilities, and moreover we characterize all homogeneous, local, monotone models with this property. Van Enter (in the case $d=r=2$) and Schonmann (for all $d \geq r \geq 2$) proved that $r$-neighbour bootstrap percolation models have trivial critical probabilities on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for every choice of the parameters $d \geq r \geq 2$: that is, an initial set of density $p$ almost surely percolates $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for every $p>0$. These results effec…
In this work, we consider critical planar site percolation on the triangular lattice and derive sharp estimates on the asymptotics of the probability of half-plane $j$-arm events for $j \geq 1$ and planar (polychromatic) $j$-arm events for $j>1$. These estimates greatly improve previous results and in particular answer (a large part of) a question of Schramm (ICM Proc., 2006).
We study bond percolation for a family of infinite hyperbolic graphs. We relate percolation to the appearance of homology in finite versions of these graphs. As a consequence, we derive an upper bound on the critical probabilities of the infinite graphs.
In this paper we are concerned with contact processes on open clusters of oriented percolation in $Z^d$, where the disease spreads along the direction of open edges. We show that the two critical infection rates in the quenched and annealed cases are equal with probability one and are asymptotically equal to $(dp)^{-1}$ as the dimension $d$ grows to infinity, where $p$ is the probability of edge `open'.
An important conjecture in percolation theory is that almost surely no infinite cluster exists in critical percolation on any transitive graph for which the critical probability is less than 1. Earlier work has established this for the amenable cases Z^2 and Z^d for large d, as well as for all non-amenable graphs with unimodular automorphism groups. We show that the conjecture holds for the basic classes of non-amenable graphs with non-unimodular automorphism groups: for decorated trees and the non-unimodular Diestel-Leader graphs. We also show that the connection probability between two verti…
Consider independent bond percolation with retention probability p on a spherically symmetric tree Gamma. Write theta_Gamma(p) for the probability that the root is in an infinite open cluster, and define the critical value p_c=inf{p:theta_Gamma(p)>0}. If theta_Gamma(p_c)=0, then the root may still percolate in the corresponding dynamical percolation process at the critical value p_c, as demonstrated recently by Haggstrom, Peres and Steif. Here we relate this phenomenon to the near-critical behaviour of theta_Gamma(p) by showing that the root percolates in the dynamical percolation process if a…
We study Bernoulli percolations on random lattices of the half-plane obtained as local limit of uniform planar triangulations or quadrangulations. Using the characteristic spatial Markov property or peeling process of these random lattices we prove a surprisingly simple universal formula for the critical threshold for bond and face percolations on these graphs. Our techniques also permit us to compute off-critical and critical exponents related to percolation clusters such as the volume and the perimeter.
We prove that the critical probability for the Sierpinski carpet lattice in two dimensions is uniquely determined. The transition is sharp. This extends the Kumagai's result to the original Sierpinski carpet lattice.
We consider Bernoulli (bond) percolation with parameter $p$ on the Cayley tree of order $k$. We introduce the notion of zebra-percolation that is percolation by paths of alternating open and closed edges. In contrast with standard percolation with critical threshold at $p_c= 1/k$, we show that zebra-percolation occurs between two critical values $p_{{\rm c},1}$ and $p_{{\rm c},2}$ (explicitly given). We provide the specific formula of zebra-percolation function.
We study a large class of Bernoulli percolation models on random lattices of the half- plane, obtained as local limits of uniform planar triangulations or quadrangulations. We first compute the exact value of the site percolation threshold in the quadrangular case using the so-called peeling techniques. Then, we generalize a result of Angel about the scaling limit of crossing probabilities, that are a natural analogue to Cardy's formula in (non-random) plane lattices. Our main result is that those probabilities are universal, in the sense that they do not depend on the percolation model neithe…
We consider an inhomogeneous oriented percolation model introduced by de Lima, Rolla and Valesin. In this model, the underlying graph is an oriented rooted tree in which each vertex points to each of its $d$ children with `short' edges, and in addition, each vertex points to each of its $d^k$ descendant at a fixed distance $k$ with `long' edges. A bond percolation process is then considered on this graph, with the prescription that independently, short edges are open with probability $p$ and long edges are open with probability $q$. We study the behavior of the critical curve $q_c(p)$: we find…
We prove that critical percolation on any quasi-transitive graph of exponential volume growth does not have a unique infinite cluster. This allows us to deduce from earlier results that critical percolation on any graph in this class does not have any infinite clusters. The result is new when the graph in question is either amenable or nonunimodular.
Building on the identification of the scaling limit of the critical percolation exploration process as a Schramm-Loewner Evolution, we derive a PDE characterization for the crossing probability of an annulus.
We use the lace expansion to prove that the critical values for nearest-neighbour bond percolation on the $n$-cube $\{0,1\}^n$ and on $\mathbb{Z}^n$ have asymptotic expansions, with rational coefficients, to all orders in powers of $n^{-1}$.
In this paper, we study the critical behavior of percolation on a configuration model with degree distribution satisfying an infinite second-moment condition, which includes power-law degrees with exponent $τ\in (2,3)$. It is well known that, in this regime, many canonical random graph models, such as the configuration model, are robust in the sense that the giant component is not destroyed when the percolation probability stays bounded away from zero. Thus, the critical behavior is observed when the percolation probability tends to zero with the network size, despite of the fact that the aver…
We prove that for Bernoulli percolation on a graph $\mathbb{Z}^2\times\{0,\dots,k\}$ ($k\ge 0$), there is no infinite cluster at criticality, almost surely. The proof extends to finite range Bernoulli percolation models on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ which are invariant under $π/2$-rotation and reflection.
Consider percolation on the triangular lattice. Let $κ(p)$ be the free energy at the zero field. We show that $$|κ'''(p)| \leq |p-p_c|^{-1/3+o(1)} \mbox{ if } p \neq p_c.$$ Furthermore, we show that there exists a sequence $ε_n\downarrow 0$ such that $$|κ'''(p_c\pm ε_n)|\geq ε_n^{-1/3+o(1)}.$$ This answers affirmatively a conjecture, asked by Sykes and Essam a half century ago, whether $κ(p)$ has a singularity at the criticality.
Let $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of transitive infinite connected graphs with $\sup\limits_{n\geq 1} p_c(G_n) < 1,$ where each $p_c(G_n)$ is bond percolation critical probability on $G_n.$ Schramm (2008) conjectured that if $G_n$ converges locally to a transitive infinite connected graph $G,$ then $p_c(G_n) \rightarrow p_c(G)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty.$ We prove the conjecture when $G$ satisfies two rough uniformities, and $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly nonamenable.
We prove that near-critical percolation and dynamical percolation on the triangular lattice $η\mathbb{T}$ have a scaling limit as the mesh $η\to 0$, in the "quad-crossing" space $\mathcal{H}$ of percolation configurations introduced by Schramm and Smirnov. The proof essentially proceeds by "perturbing" the scaling limit of the critical model, using the pivotal measures studied in our earlier paper. Markovianity and conformal covariance of these new limiting objects are also established.
Parafermionic observables were introduced by Smirnov for planar FK percolation in order to study the critical phase $(p,q)=(p_c(q),q)$. This article gathers several known properties of these observables. Some of these properties are used to prove the divergence of the correlation length when approaching the critical point for FK percolation when $1\le q\le 4$. A crucial step is to consider FK percolation on the universal cover of the punctured plane. We also mention several conjectures on FK percolation with arbitrary cluster-weight $q>0$.
