We study the regularity of the roots of complex monic polynomials $P(t)$ of fixed degree depending smoothly on a real parameter $t$. We prove that each continuous parameterization of the roots of a generic $C^\infty$ curve $P(t)$ (which always exists) is locally absolutely continuous. Generic means that no two of the continuously chosen roots meet of infinite order of flatness. Simple examples show that one cannot expect a better regularity than absolute continuity. This result will follow from the proposition that for any $t_0$ there exists a positive integer $N$ such that $t \mapsto P(t_0\pm (t-t_0)^N)$ admits smooth parameterizations of its roots near $t_0$. We show that $C^n$ curves $P(t)$ (where $n = °P$) admit differentiable roots if and only if the order of contact of the roots is $\ge 1$. We give applications to the perturbation theory of normal matrices and unbounded normal operators with compact resolvents and common domain of definition: The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a generic $C^\infty$ curve of such operators can be arranged locally in an absolutely continuous way.
In this contribution, the behavior of zeros of orthogonal polynomials associated with canonical linear spectral transformations of measures supported in the real line is analyzed. An electrostatic interpretation of them is given.
We prove several results about zeros of paraorthogonal polynomials using the theory of rank one perturbations of unitary operators. In particular, we obtain new details on the interlacing of zeros for successive POPUC.
This paper deals with monic orthogonal polynomials generated by a Geronimus canonical spectral transformation of the Laguerre classical measure: \[ \frac{1}{x-c}x^{α}e^{-x}dx+Nδ(x-c), \] for $x\in[0,\infty)$, $α>-1$, a free parameter $N\in \mathbb{R}_{+}$ and a shift $c<0$. We analyze the asymptotic behavior (both strong and relative to classical Laguerre polynomials) of these orthogonal polynomials as $n$ tends to infinity.
$\bar\partial$-extension of the matrix Riemann-Hilbert method is used to study asymptotics of the polynomials $P_n(z)$ satisfying orthogonality relations \[ \int_{-1}^1 x^lP_n(x)\frac{ρ(x)dx}{\sqrt{1-x^2}}=0, \quad l\in\{0,\ldots,n-1\}, \] where $ρ(x)$ is a positive $m$ times continuously differentiable function on $[-1,1]$, $m\geq3$.
We construct noncomplete orthogonal systems on the ray $[0,\infty)$ that look like Jacobi polynomials $P_n(x)$ after a shift of degree $n\mapsto n+a$, where $a$ is a real constant. These systems are solutions of some exotic Sturm-Liouville problem for hypergeometric differential operators. We obtain the explicit spectral decomposition for these problems.
This paper is devoted to the study of general (Laurent) polynomial modifications of moment functionals on the unit circle, i.e., associated with hermitian Toeplitz matrices. We present a new approach which allows us to study polynomial modifications of arbitrary degree. The main objective is the characterization of the quasi-definiteness of the functionals involved in the problem in terms of a difference equation relating the corresponding Schur parameters. The results are presented in the general framework of (non necessarily quasi-definite) hermitian functionals, so that the maximum number o…
Starting from degree N solutions of a time dependent Schroedinger-like equation for classical orthogonal polynomials, a linear matrix equation describing perturbations around the N zeros of the polynomial is derived. The matrix has remarkable Diophantine properties. Its eigenvalues are independent of the zeros. The corresponding eigenvectors provide the representations of the lower degree (0,1,...,N-1) polynomials in terms of the zeros of the degree N polynomial. The results are valid universally for all the classical orthogonal polynomials, including the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogo…
We analyse a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which involves the outward normal derivatives on the sphere. Using their representation in terms of spherical harmonics, algebraic and analytic properties will be deduced. First, we deduce explicit connection formulas relating classical multivariate ball polynomials and our family of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. Then explicit representations for the norms and the kernels will be obtained. Finally, the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding Christoffel functions is studied.

Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle are completely determined by their reflection coefficients through the Szegő recurrences. We assume that the reflection coefficients converge to some complex number a with 0 < |a| < 1. The polynomials then live essentially on the arc {e^(i theta): alpha <= theta <= 2 pi - alpha} where cos alpha/2 = sqrt(1-|a|^2) with 0 <= alpha <= 2 pi. We analyze the orthogonal polynomials by comparing them with the orthogonal polynomials with constant reflection coefficients, which were studied earlier by Ya. L. Geronimus and N. I. Akhiezer. In particular, we show th…
We consider a surface with negative curvature in $\Bbb R^3$ which is a cubic perturbation of the saddle. For this surface, we prove a new restriction theorem, analogous to the theorem for paraboloids proved by L. Guth in 2016. This specific perturbation has turned out to be of fundamental importance also to the understanding of more general classes of perturbations.
Nonlinear perturbation of Fuchsian systems are studied in a region including two singularities. It is proved that such systems are generally not analytically equivalent to their linear part (they are not linearizable) and the obstructions are found constructively, as a countable set of numbers. Furthermore, assuming a polynomial character of the nonlinear part, it is shown that there exists a unique formal "correction" of the nonlinear part so that the "corrected" system is formally linearizable. Normal forms of these systems are found, providing also their classification.
Differential systems with a Fuchsian linear part are studied in regions including all the singularities in the complex plane of these equations. Such systems are not necessarily analytically equivalent to their linear part (they are not linearizable) and obstructions are found as a unique nonlinear correction after which the system becomes formally linearizable. More generally, normal forms are found. The corrections and the normal forms are found constructively. Expansions in multiple orthogonal polynomials and their generalization to matrix-valued polynomials are instrumental to these constr…
We determine the maximal angular perturbation of the (n+1)th roots of unity permissible in the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund theorem on L^p means of polynomials of degree at most n. For p=2, the result is an analogue of the Kadets 1/4 theorem on perturbation of Riesz bases of holomorphic exponentials.
We prove that for any $n\times n$ matrix, $A$, and $z$ with $|z|\geq \|A\|$, we have that $\|(z-A)^{-1}\|\leq\cot (\fracπ{4n}) \dist (z, \spec(A))^{-1}$. We apply this result to the study of random orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.
The purpose of the present paper is to investigate some structural and qualitative aspects of two different perturbations of the parameters of $g$-fractions. In this context the concept of \emph{gap} $g$-fractions is introduced. While tail sequences of a continued fraction play a significant role in the first perturbation, Schur fractions are used in the second perturbation of the $g$-parameters that are considered. Illustrations are provided using Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Using a particular gap $g$-fraction, some members of the class of Pick functions are also identified.
In recent years, chain sequences and their perturbations have played a significant role in characterising the orthogonal polynomials both on the real line as well as on the unit circle. In this note, a particular disturbance of the chain sequence related to orthogonal polynomials having their true interval of orthogonality as a subset of $[0,\infty)$ is studied leading to an important consequence related to the kernel polynomials. Such perturbations are shown to be related to transformations of symmetric measures. An illustration using the generalized Laguerre polynomials is also provided.
The roots of a complex polynomial depend continuously on the coefficients; that is, an infinitesimal perturbation of the coefficients results in an infinitesimal perturbation of the roots. A short, straightforward proof of this is possible using infinitesimals.
We give formulas for the density of the measure of orthogonality for orthonormal polynomials with unbounded recurrence coefficients. The formulas involve limits of appropriately scaled Turán determinants or Christoffel functions. Exact asymptotics of the polynomials and numerical examples are also provided.
We introduce a dbar-formulation of the orthogonal polynomials on the complex plane, and hence of the related normal matrix model, which is expected to play the same role as the Riemann-Hilbert formalism in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the line and for the related Hermitian model. We propose an analog of Deift-Kriecherbauer-McLaughlin-Venakides-Zhou asymptotic method for the analysis of the relevant dbar-problem, and indicate how familiar steps for the Hermitian model, e.g. the g-function ``undressing'', might look like in the case of the normal model. We use the particular model con…
In the first five sections, we deal with the class of probability measures with asymptotically periodic Verblunsky coefficients of p-type bounded variation. The goal is to investigate the perturbation of the Verblunsky coefficients when we add a pure point to a gap of the essential spectrum. For the asymptotically constant case, we give an asymptotic formula for the orthonormal polynomials in the gap, prove that the perturbation term converges and show the limit explicitly. Furthermore, we prove that the perturbation is of bounded variation. Then we generalize the method to the asymptotically …
We study continuity of the roots of nonmonic polynomials as a function of their coefficients using only the most elementary results from an introductory course in real analysis and the theory of single variable polynomials. Our approach gives both qualitative and quantitative results in the case that the degree of the unperturbed polynomial can change under a perturbation of its coefficients, a case that naturally occurs, for instance, in stability theory of polynomials, singular perturbation theory, or in the perturbation theory for generalized eigenvalue problems. An application of our resul…
This paper is a continuation of the recent paper "CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials: Christoffel formulas for Christoffel and Geronimus transformations" by the same authors. The behavior of quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane, characterized by bivariate linear functionals, and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families --including Sobolev and discrete Sobolev orthogonalities--- under two type of Geronimus--Uvarov transformations is studied. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial and divided by the comple…
Quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families are studied. Bivariate linear functionals encompass large families of orthogonalities like Sobolev and discrete Sobolev types. Two possible Christoffel transformations of these linear functionals are discussed. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial, or are multiplied by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial. For the Geronimus transformation, the linear functional is perturbed in two possible manners as well, by a div…
In the first part of the paper, we discuss eigenvalue problems of the form -w"+Pw=Ew with complex potential P and zero boundary conditions at infinity on two rays in the complex plane. We give sufficient conditions for continuity of the spectrum when the leading coefficient of P tends to 0. In the second part, we apply these results to the study of topology and geometry of the real spectral loci of PT-symmetric families with P of degree 3 and 4, and prove several related results on the location of zeros of their eigenfunctions.
