In this paper we study a random walk on an affine building of type $\tilde{A}_r$, whose radial part, when suitably normalized, converges to the Brownian motion of the Weyl chamber. This gives a new discrete approximation of this process, alternative to the one of Biane \cite{Bia2}. This extends also the link at the probabilistic level between Riemannian symmetric spaces of the noncompact type and their discrete counterpart, which had been previously discovered by Bougerol and Jeulin in rank one \cite{BJ}. The main ingredients of the proof are a combinatorial formula on the building and the estimate of the transition density proved in \cite{AST}.
We examine the non-exit probability of a multidimensional Brownian motion from a growing truncated Weyl chamber. Different regimes are identified according to the growth speed, ranging from polynomial decay over stretched-exponential to exponential decay. Furthermore we derive associated large deviation principles for the empirical measure of the properly rescaled and transformed Brownian motion as the dimension grows to infinity. Our main tool is an explicit eigenvalue expansion for the transition probabilities before exiting the truncated Weyl chamber.
We construct a sequence of Markov processes on the set of dominant weights of an affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ considering tensor product of irreducible highest weight modules of $\mathfrak{g}$ and specializations of the characters involving the Weyl vector $ρ$. We show that it converges towards a space-time Brownian motion with a drift, conditioned to remain in a Weyl chamber associated to the root system of $\mathfrak{g}$.
We supply two different descriptions of the pushing process driving the reflected Brownian motion in Weyl chambers, when the latter domains are simplexes. The first one shows that a simple root lies in one and only one orbit if and only if the pushing process in the direction of that simple root increases as the sum of all the Brownian local times in the directions of the orbit's positive elements. The last one shows that the pushing process may be written as the sum of an inward normal vector at the chamber's boundary and an inward normal vector at the origin, yielding a kind of a multivoque …
In this paper we outline an approach for analysing random walks on the chambers of buildings. The types of walks that we consider are those which are well adapted to the structure of the building: Namely walks with transition probabilities $p(c,d)$ depending only on the Weyl distance $δ(c,d)$. We carry through the computations for thick locally finite affine buildings of type $\tilde{A}_2$ to prove a local limit theorem for these buildings. The technique centres around the representation theory of the associated Hecke algebra. This representation theory is particularly well developed for affin…
In the setting of finite reflection groups, we prove that the projection of a Brownian motion onto a closed Weyl chamber is another Brownian motion normally reflected on the walls of the chamber. Our proof is probabilistic and the decomposition we obtain may be seen as a multidimensional extension of Tanaka's formula for linear Brownian motion. The paper is closed with a description of the boundary process through the local times at zero of the distances from the initial process to the facets.
Let $n$ particles move in standard Brownian motion in one dimension, with the process terminating if two particles collide. This is a specific case of Brownian motion constrained to stay inside a Weyl chamber; the Weyl group for this chamber is $A_{n-1}$, the symmetric group. For any starting positions, we compute a determinant formula for the density function for the particles to be at specified positions at time $t$ without having collided by time $t$. We show that the probability that there will be no collision up to time $t$ is asymptotic to a constant multiple of $t^{-n(n-1)/4}$ as $t$ go…
We study the scaling limit of a branching random walk in static random environment in dimension $d=1,2$ and show that it is given by a super-Brownian motion in a white noise potential. In dimension $1$ we characterize the limit as the unique weak solution to the stochastic PDE: \[\partial_t μ= (Δ{+} ξ) μ{+} \sqrt{2νμ} \tildeξ\] for independent space white noise $ξ$ and space-time white noise $\tildeξ$. In dimension $2$ the study requires paracontrolled theory and the limit process is described via a martingale problem. In both dimensions we prove persistence of this rough version of the super-…
We consider the coadjoint action of a Loop group of a compact group on the dual of the corresponding centrally extended Loop algebra and prove that a Brownian motion in a Cartan subalgebra conditioned to remain in an affine Weyl chamber - which can be seen as a space time conditioned Brownian motion - is distributed as the radial part process of a Brownian sheet on the underlying Lie algebra.
Let $B^{H_1}$ and $\tilde{B}^{H_2}$ be two independent fractional Brownian motions on ${\mathbb R}$ with respective indices $H_i\in (0,1)$ and $H_1\leq H_2$. In this paper, we consider their intersection local time $\ell_t(a)$. We show that $\ell_t(a)$ is differentiable in the spatial variable if $\frac1{H_1}+\frac1{H_2}>3$, and we introduce the so-called {\it hybrid quadratic covariation} $[f(B^{H_1}-\tilde{B}^{H_2}),B^{H_1}]^{(HC)}$. When $H_1<\frac12$, we construct a Banach space ${\mathscr H}$ of measurable functions such that the quadratic covariation exists in $L^2(Ω)$ for all $f\in {\ma…
We condition super-Brownian motion on "boundary statistics" of the exit measure $X_D$ from a bounded domain $D$. These are random variables defined on an auxiliary probability space generated by sampling from the exit measure $X_D$. Two particular examples are: conditioning on a Poisson random measure with intensity $βX_D$ and conditioning on $X_D$ itself. We find the conditional laws as $h$-transforms of the original SBM law using Dynkin's formulation of $X$-harmonic functions. We give explicit expression for the (extended) $X$-harmonic functions considered. We also obtain explicit constructi…
We study some path transformations related to Littelmann path model and their applications to representation theory and Brownian motion in a Weyl chamber.
We construct the conditional versions of a multidimensional random walk given that it does not leave the Weyl chambers of type C and of type D, respectively, in terms of a Doob h-transform. Furthermore, we prove functional limit theorems for the rescaled random walks. This is an extension of recent work by Eichelsbacher and Koenig who studied the analogous conditioning for the Weyl chamber of type A. Our proof follows recent work by Denisov and Wachtel who used martingale properties and a strong approximation of random walks by Brownian motion. Therefore, we are able to keep minimal moment ass…
Stochastic variational inequalities provide a unified treatment for stochastic differential equations living in a closed domain with normal reflection and (or) singular repellent drift. When the domain is a polyhedron, we prove that the reflected-repelled Brownian motion does not hit the non-smooth part of the boundary. A sufficient condition for non-hitting a face of the polyhedron is derived from the one-dimensional case. A complete answer to the question of attainability of the walls of the Weyl chamber may be given for a radial Dunkl process.
The gaps between the times, in a Weyl chamber, at which the sum of the increments of independent Brownian motions attains its maximum has a Dirichlet distribution.
In this work we present different results concerning the signature and the cubature of fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The first result regards the rate of convergence of the expected signature of the linear piecewise approximation of the fBm to its exact value, for a value of the Hurst parameter $H\in(\frac{1}{2},1)$. We show that the rate of convergence is given by $2H$. We believe that this rate is sharp as it is consistent with the result of Ni and Xu, who showed that the sharp rate of convergence for the Brownian motion (i.e. fBm with $H=\frac{1}{2}$) is given by $1$. The second result …
We introduce a resetting Brownian bridge as a simple model to study search processes where the total search time $t_f$ is finite and the searcher returns to its starting point at $t_f$. This is simply a Brownian motion with a Poissonian resetting rate $r$ to the origin which is constrained to start and end at the origin at time $t_f$. We first provide a rejection-free algorithm to generate such resetting bridges in all dimensions by deriving an effective Langevin equation with an explicit space-time dependent drift $\tilde μ({\bf x},t)$ and resetting rate $\tilde r({\bf x}, t)$. We also study …
We provide two equivalent approaches for computing the tail distribution of the first hitting time of the boundary of the Weyl chamber by a radial Dunkl process. The first approach is based on a spectral problem with initial value. The second one expresses the tail distribution by means of the $W$-invariant Dunkl-Hermite polynomials. Illustrative examples are given by the irreducible root systems of types $A$, $B$, $D$. The paper ends with an interest in the case of Brownian motions for which our formulae take determinantal forms.
We consider a random walk $\tilde S$ which has different increment distributions in positive and negative half-planes. In the upper half-plane the increments are mean-zero i.i.d. with finite variance. In the lower half-plane we consider two cases: increments are positive i.i.d. random variables with either a slowly varying tail or with a finite expectation. For the distributions with a slowly varying tails, we show that $\{\frac{1}{\sqrt n} \tilde S(nt)\}$ has no weak limit in $\De$; alternatively, the weak limit is a reflected Brownian motion.
As an image of the many-to-one map of loop-erasing operation $\LE$ of random walks, a self-avoiding walk (SAW) is obtained. The loop-erased random walk (LERW) model is the statistical ensemble of SAWs such that the weight of each SAW $ζ$ is given by the total weight of all random walks $π$ which are inverse images of $ζ$, $\{π: \LE(π)=ζ\}$. We regard the Brownian paths as the continuum limits of random walks and consider the statistical ensemble of loop-erased Brownian paths (LEBPs) as the continuum limits of the LERW model. Following the theory of Fomin on nonintersecting LERWs, we introduce …
We consider the solution of $\partial_t u=\partial_x^2 u+\partial_x\partial_t B,\,(x,t)\in R\times(0,\infty)$, subject to $u(x,0)=0,\,x\in R$, where $B$ is a Brownian sheet. We show that $u$ also satisfies $\partial_x^2 u +[\,(-\partial_t^2)^{1/2}+\sqrt{2}\partial_x(-\partial_t^2)^{1/4}\,]\,u^a= \partial_x\partial_t{\tilde B}$ in $R\times(0,\infty)$ where $u^a$ stands for the extension of $u(x,t)$ to $(x,t)\in R^2$ which is antisymmetric in $t$ and $\tilde{B}$ is another Brownian sheet. The new SPDE allows us to prove the strong Markov property of the pair $(u,\partial_x u)$ when seen as a pro…
Dyson's Brownian motion model with the parameter $β=2$, which we simply call the Dyson model in the present paper, is realized as an $h$-transform of the absorbing Brownian motion in a Weyl chamber of type A. Depending on initial configuration with a finite number of particles, we define a set of entire functions and introduce a martingale for a system of independent complex Brownian motions (CBMs), which is expressed by a determinant of a matrix with elements given by the conformal transformations of CBMs by the entire functions. We prove that the Dyson model can be represented by the system …
A system of one-dimensional Brownian motions (BMs) conditioned never to collide with each other is realized as (i) Dyson's BM model, which is a process of eigenvalues of hermitian matrix-valued diffusion process in the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE), and as (ii) the $h$-transform of absorbing BM in a Weyl chamber, where the harmonic function $h$ is the product of differences of variables (the Vandermonde determinant). The Karlin-McGregor formula gives determinantal expression to the transition probability density of absorbing BM. We show from the Karlin-McGregor formula, if the initial state …
In [O'Connell and Yor (2002)] a path-transformation G was introduced with the property that, for X belonging to a certain class of random walks on the integer lattice, the transformed walk G(X) has the same law as that of the original walk conditioned never to exit a type-A Weyl chamber. In this paper, we show that G is closely related to the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, and use this connection to give a new proof of the above representation theorem. The new proof is valid for a larger class of random walks and yields additional information about the joint law of X and G(X). The corresponding…
We study the noncolliding random walk (RW), which is a particle system of one-dimensional, simple and symmetric RWs starting from distinct even sites and conditioned never to collide with each other. When the number of particles is finite, $N < \infty$, this discrete process is constructed as an $h$-transform of absorbing RW in the $N$-dimensional Weyl chamber. We consider Fujita's polynomial martingales of RW with time-dependent coefficients and express them by introducing a complex Markov process. It is a complexification of RW, in which independent increments of its imaginary part are in th…
