It is shown that to every operator T in a general von Neumann factor M of type II_1 and to every Borel set B in the complex plane, one can associate a largest, closed, T-invariant subspace, K = K_T(B), affiliated with M, such that the Brown measure of T|_K is concentrated on B. Moreover, K is T-hyperinvariant, and the Brown measure of (1-P_K)T|_(1-P_K)(H) is concentrated on C\B. In particular, if T has a Brown measure which is not concentrated on a singleton, then there exists a non-trivial, closed, T-hyperinvariant subspace. Furthermore, it is shown that for every T in M, the limit A=\lim_{n\to\infty}[(T^n)* T^n]^{1/2n} exists in the strong operator topology and K_T(\bar{B(0,r)})=1_{[0,r]}(A), r>0.
In the setting of operators on Hilbert spaces, we prove that every quasinilpotent operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace if and only if every pair of idempotents with a quasinilpotent commutator has a non-trivial common closed invariant subspace. We also present a geometric characterization of invariant subspaces of idempotents and classify operators that are essentially idempotent.
It is shown that if the Deddens algebra ${\mathcal D}_T$ associated with a quasinilpotent operator $T$ on a complex Banach space is closed and localizing then $T$ has a nontrivial closed hyperinvariant subspace.
For an operator $T$ of class $C_0$ with multiplicity two, we show that the quasisimilarity class of an invariant subspace $M$ is determined by the quasisimilarity classes of the restriction $T|M$ and of the compression $T_{M^\perp}$. We also provide a canonical form for the subspace $M$.
A reflexive hereditarily indecomposable Banach space $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{ISP}}}$ is presented, such that for every $Y$ infinite dimensional closed subspace of $\mathfrak{X}_{_{^\text{ISP}}}$ and every bounded linear operator $T:Y\rightarrow Y$, the operator $T$ admits a non-trivial closed invariant subspace.
We show that finitely subgraded Lie algebras of compact operators have invariant subspaces when conditions of quasinilpotence are imposed on certain components of the subgrading. This allows us to obtain some useful information about the structure of such algebras. As an application, we prove a number of results on the existence of invariant subspaces for algebraic structures of compact operators. Along the way we obtain new criteria for the triangularizability of a Lie algebra of compact operators.
We consider the problem of classification of invariant subspaces for the class of uniform Jordan operators. We show that given two invariant subspaces $M_1$ and $M_2$ of a uniform Jordan operator $T=S(θ)\oplus S(θ)\oplus \ldots$, the subspace $M_2$ belongs to the quasiaffine orbit of $M_1$ if and only if the restrictions $T|M_1$ and $T|M_2$ are quasisimilar and the compression $T_{M_2^\perp}$ can be injected in the compression $T_{M_1^\perp}$. Our result refines previous work on the subject by Bercovici and Smotzer.
A closed subspace of a Banach space $\cX$ is almost-invariant for a collection $\cS$ of bounded linear operators on $\cX$ if for each $T \in \cS$ there exists a finite-dimensional subspace $\cF_T$ of $\cX$ such that $T \cY \subseteq \cY + \cF_T$. In this paper, we study the existence of almost-invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension for various classes of Banach and Hilbert space operators. We also examine the structure of operators which admit a maximal commuting family of almost-invariant subspaces. In particular, we prove that if $T$ is an operator on a separable Hilbert s…
We obtain a Shimorin-Wold-type decomposition for a doubly commuting covariant representation of a product system of $C^*$-correspondences. This extends a recent Wold-type decomposition by Jeu and Pinto for a $q$-doubly commuting isometries. Application to the wandering subspaces of doubly commuting induced representations is explored, and a version of Mandrekar's Beurling type theorem is obtained to study doubly commuting invariant subspaces using Fock space approach due to Popescu.
Gelfand-Naimark duality (Commutative $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Locally compact Hausdorff spaces) is extended to $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Quotient maps on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Using this duality, we give for an \emph{arbitrary} bounded operator on a complex Hilbert space of several dimensions, a functional calculus and the existence theorem for nontrivial invariant subspace.
Let T:=[T_1,..., T_n] be an n-tuple of operators on a Hilbert space such that T is a completely non-coisometric row contraction. We establish the existence of a "one-to-one" correspondence between the joint invariant subspaces under T_1,..., T_n, and the regular factorizations of the characteristic function associated with T. In particular, we prove that there is a non-trivial joint invariant subspace under the operators T_1,..., T_n, if and only if there is a non-trivial regular factorization of the characteristic function. We also provide a functional model for the joint invariant subspaces …
Let T be a C_{\cdot 0}-contraction on a Hilbert space H and S be a non-trivial closed subspace of H. We prove that S is a T-invariant subspace of H if and only if there exists a Hilbert space D and a partially isometric operator Π: H^2_D(\mathbb{D}) \raro H such that ΠM_z = T Πand that S = ran Π, or equivalently, P_S = ΠΠ^*. As an application we completely classify the shift-invariant subspaces of C_{\cdot 0}-contractive and analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit disc. Our results also includes the case of weighted Bergman spaces over the unit disk.
Gelfand duality between unital commutative C*-algebras and Compact Hausdorff spaces is extended to all unital C*-algebras, where the dual objects are what we call compact Hausdorff quantum spaces. We apply this result to obtain, a characterization of unitary groups of C*-algebras, and, for arbitrary bounded Hilbert space operators, (i) A spectral theorem cum continuous functional calculus, and (ii) A proof of the general Invariant Subspace Theorem. Also described is a nonabelian generalization of Pontryagin duality of abelian locally compact groups.
The famous Lomonosov's invariant subspace theorem states that if a continuous linear operator T on an infinite-dimensional normed space E "commutes" with a compact nonzero operator K, i.e., TK=KT, then T has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. We generalize this theorem for multivalued linear operators.
We give a complete characterization of invariant subspaces for $(M_{z_1}, \ldots, M_{z_n})$ on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ over the unit polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n >1$. In particular, this yields a complete set of unitary invariants for invariant subspaces for $(M_{z_1}, \ldots, M_{z_n})$ on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$, $n > 1$. As a consequence, we classify a large class of $n$-tuples, $n > 1$, of commuting isometries. All of our results hold for vector-valued Hardy spaces over $\mathbb{D}^n$, $n > 1$. Our invariant subspace theorem solves the well-known open problem on cha…
We survey several applications of fixed point theorems in the theory of invariant subspaces. The general idea is that a fixed point theorem applied to a suitable map yields the existence of invariant subspaces for an operator on a Banach space.
In this paper, motivated by the Berger, Coburn and Lebow and Bercovici, Douglas and Foias theory for tuples of commuting isometries, we study analytic representations and joint invariant subspaces of a class of commuting $n$-isometries and prove that the $C^*$-algebra generated by the $n$-shift restricted to an invariant subspace of finite codimension in $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is unitarily equivalent to the $C^*$-algebra generated by the $n$-shift on $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$.
A classical result of Norbert Wiener characterises doubly shift-invariant subspaces for square integrable functions on the unit circle with respect to a finite positive Borel measure $μ$, as being the ranges of the multiplication maps corresponding to the characteristic functions of $μ$-measurable subsets of the unit circle. An analogue of this result is given for the Besicovitch Hilbert space of `square integrable almost periodic functions'.
This paper focuses on representations of contractively embedded invariant subspaces in several variables. We present a version of the de Branges theorem for $n$-tuples of multiplication operators by the coordinate functions on analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$ and the Hardy space over the unit polydics $\mathbb{D}^n$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$.
This paper is a follow-up contribution to our work [20] where we discussed some invariant subspace results for contractions on Hilbert spaces. Here we extend the results of [20] to the context of n-tuples of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. Let T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n) be a pure commuting co-spherically contractive n-tuple of operators on a Hilbert space \mathcal{H} and \mathcal{S} be a non-trivial closed subspace of \mathcal{H}. One of our main results states that: \mathcal{S} is a joint T-invariant subspace if and only if there exists a partially isometric operator Π\in \mathcal{B}(…
We show that every R-diagonal operator x has a continuous family of invariant subspaces relative to the von Neumann algebra generated by x. This allows us to find the Brown measure of x and to find a new conceptual proof that Voiculescu's S-transform is multiplicative. Our considerations base on a new concept of R-diagonality with amalgamation, for which we give several equivalent characterizations.
We show that Voiculescu's circular operator and, more generally, each circular free Poisson operator has a continuous family of invariant subspaces relative to the von Neumann algebra it generates. The proof relies on upper triangular random matrix models and consequent realizations of these operators as upper triangular matrices of free random variables.
The spectral eta-invariant of a self-adjoint elliptic differential operator on a closed manifold is rigid, provided that the parity of the order is opposite to the parity of dimension of the manifold. The paper deals with the calculation of the fractional part of the eta-invariant in this case. The method used to obtain the corresponding formula is based on the index theorem for elliptic operators in subspaces. It also utilizes K-theory with coefficients Z_n. In particular, it is shown that the group K(T^*M,Z_n) is realized by elliptic operators (symbols) acting in appropriate subspaces.
