Let g be a cubic polynomial with integer coefficients and n>9 variables, and assume that the congruence g=0 modulo p^k is soluble for all prime powers p^k. We show that the equation g=0 has infinitely many integer solutions when the cubic part of g defines a projective hypersurface with singular locus of dimension <n-10. The proof is based on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method.
Let X be a geometrically integral projective cubic hypersurface defined over the rationals, with dimension D and singular locus of dimension at most D-4. For any ε>0, we show that X contains O(B^{D+ε}) rational points of height at most B. The implied constant in this estimate depends upon the choice of εand the coefficients of the cubic form defining X.
Let k be a finite field with characteristic exceeding 3. We prove that the space of rational curves of fixed degree on any smooth cubic hypersurface over k with dimension at least 11 is irreducible and of the expected dimension.
These are the substantially expanded notes of the lectures of JK at the summer school "Higher-Dimensional Geometry over Finite Fields" in Göttingen, June 2007. The first part gives an overview of the methods. The main new result is the construction of rational curves passing through a given collection of points on smooth cubic hypersurfaces over finite fields.
Let X be a projective cubic hypersurface of dimension 11 or more, which is defined over the rationals. In this paper it is shown that X contains rational points provided that the cubic form defining X can be written as the sum of two forms that share no common variables. ----- This paper features an appendix "Groupe de Brauer non ramifié des hypersurfaces cubiques singulières (d'après P. Salberger)", by J.-L. Colliot-Thĺène.
In this article we prove the following theorems about weak approximation of smooth cubic hypersurfaces and del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4 defined over global fields. (1) For cubic hypersurfaces defined over global function fields, if there is a rational point, then weak approximation holds at places of good reduction whose residual field has at least 11 elements. (2) For del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4 defined over global function fields, if there is a rational point, then weak approximation holds at places of good reduction whose residual field has at least 13 elements. (3) Weak approximation …
In this article we find connections between the values of Gauss hypergeometric functions and the dimension of the vector space of Hodge cycles of four dimensional cubic hypersurfaces. Since the Hodge conjecture is well-known for those varieties we calculate values of Hypergeometric series on certain $CM$ points. Our methods is based on the calculation of the Picard-Fuchs equations in higher dimensions, reducing them to the Gauss equation and then applying the Abelian Subvariety Theorem to the corresponding hypergeometric abelian varieties.
We address the problem of weak approximation for general cubic hypersurfaces defined over number fields, with arbitrary singular locus. In particular, weak approximation is established for the smooth locus of projective, geometrically integral, non-conical cubic hypersurfaces, of dimension at least 17. The proof utilises the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, and the fibration method.
Let $X$ be a smooth cubic hypersurface of dimension $n \ge 1$ over the rationals. It is well-known that new rational points may be obtained from old ones by secant and tangent constructions. In view of the Mordell--Weil theorem for $n=1$, Manin (1968) asked if there exists a finite set $S$ from which all other rational points can be thus obtained. We give an affirmative answer for $n \ge 48$, showing in fact that we can take the generating set $S$ to consist of just one point. Our proof makes use of a weak approximation theorem due to Skinner, a theorem of Browning, Dietmann and Heath-Brown on…
Let $n$ be a positive multiple of $4$. We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on singular cubic hypersurfaces $S_n$ defined by $$ x^3=(y_1^2 + \cdots + y_n^2)z . $$ This result is new in two aspects: first, it can be viewed as a modest start on the study of density of rational points on those singular cubic hypersurfaces which are not covered by the classical theorems of Davenport or Heath-Brown; second, it proves Manin's conjecture for singular cubic hypersurfaces $S_n$ defined above.
For any finite field k of characteristic exceeding 3, the Hasse principle and weak approximation is established for non-singular cubic hypersurfaces X over the function field k(t), provided that X has dimension at least 6.
A version of the Hardy-Littlewood circle method is developed for number fields K/Q and is used to show that non-singular projective cubic hypersurfaces over K always have a K-rational point when they have dimension at least 8.
Given a smooth cubic hypersurface $X$ over a finite field of characteristic greater than 3 and two generic points on $X$, we use a function field analogue of the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of degree $d$ rational curves on $X$ passing through those two points. We use this to deduce the dimension and irreducibility of the moduli space parametrising such curves, for large enough $d$.
We show that if $X\subseteq \mathbb{P}^{n-1}$, defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ by a cubic form that splits off two forms, with $n\geq 11$, then $X(\mathbb{Q})$ is non-empty. The same holds for an $(m_1,m_2)$-form with $m_1\geq 4$ and $m_2\geq 5$.
We show that any smooth projective cubic hypersurface of dimension at least $29$ over the rationals contains a rational line. A variation of our methods provides a similar result over p-adic fields. In both cases, we improve on previous results due to the second author and Wooley. We include an appendix in which we highlight some slight modifications to a recent result of Papanikolopoulos and Siksek. It follows that the set of rational points on smooth projective cubic hypersurfaces of dimension at least 29 is generated via secant and tangent constructions from just a single point.

Let S Q denote x 3 = Q(y 1 ,. .. , y m)z where Q is a primitive positive definite quadratic form in m variables with integer coefficients. This S Q ranges over a class of singular cubic hypersurfaces as Q varies. For S Q we prove (i) Manin's conjecture is true if Q is locally determined with 2 | m and m 4; (ii) in general Manin's conjecture is true up to a leading constant if 2 | m and m 6.
We give an interim report on some improvements and generalizations of the Abbott-Kedlaya-Roe method to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate ample hypersurface in a projectively normal toric variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in linear time in $p$. These are illustrated with a number of examples including K3 surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a cubic fourfold. The latter example is a non-special cubic fourfold appearing in the Ranestad-Voisin coplanar divisor on moduli space; this verifies that the coplanar divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the sense of Hassett.
Let $f$ be a polynomial of degree at least four with integer-valued coefficients. We establish new bounds for the density of integer solutions to the equation $f=0$, using an iterated version of Heath-Browns $q$-analogue of van der Corput's method of exponential sums.
It is well-known that the Hasse principle holds for quadric hypersurfaces. The Hasse principle fails for integral points on smooth quadric hypersurfaces of dimension 2 but the failure can be completely explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We investigate how often the family of quadric hypersurfaces $ax^2 + by^2 +cz^2 = n$ has a Brauer-Manin obstruction. We improve previous bounds of Mitankin.
Let $C$ be a cubic form with rational coefficients in $n$ variables, and let $h$ be the $h$-invariant of $C$. Let $L_1, \ldots, L_r$ be linear forms with real coefficients such that if $\boldsymbolα \in \mathbb{R}^r \setminus \{ \boldsymbol{0} \}$ then $\boldsymbolα \cdot \mathbf{L}$ is not a rational form. Assume that $h > 16 + 8 r$. Let $\boldsymbolτ \in \mathbb{R}^r$, and let $η$ be a positive real number. We prove an asymptotic formula for the weighted number of integer solutions $\mathbf{x} \in [-P,P]^n$ to the system $C(\mathbf{x}) = 0, \: |\mathbf{L}(\mathbf{x}) - \boldsymbolτ| < η$. If…

We study the integral points on $\mathbb P_ n\setminus D$, where $D$ is the branch locus of a projection from an hypersurface in $\mathbb P_{n+1}$ to a hyperplane $H\simeq\mathbb P_n$. In doing that we follow the approach proposed in a paper by Zannier but we prove a more general result that also gives a sharper bound that may lead to prove the finiteness of integral points and has more applications. The proofs we present in this paper are effective and they provide a way to actually construct a set containing all the integral points in question. Our results find a concrete application to Diop…
Let $F$ be a non-zero polynomial with integer coefficients in $N$ variables of degree $M$. We prove the existence of an integral point of small height at which $F$ does not vanish. Our basic bound depends on $N$ and $M$ only. We separately investigate the case when $F$ is decomposable into a product of linear forms, and provide a more sophisticated bound. We also relate this problem to a certain extension of Siegel's Lemma as well as to Faltings' version of it. Finally we exhibit an application of our results to a discrete version of the Tarski plank problem.
In the paper we partially solved the problem of the distribution of the discriminants of integral polynomials in the cubic case. We proved the asymptotic formula for the number of integral cubic polynomials having bounded height and bounded discriminant. The main term of the obtained formula is the best possible for the considered range of polynomial discriminant values.
We determine an explicit triangular integral basis for any separable cubic extension of a rational function field over a finite field in any characteristic. We obtain a formula for the discriminant of every such extension in terms of a standard form in a tower for the Galois closure.
