The 1-d Schrodinger flow on 2-sphere, the Gauss-Codazzi equation for flat Lagrangian submanifolds in C^n, and the space-time monopole equation are all examples of geometric soliton equations. The linear systems with a spectral parameter (Lax pair) associated to these equations satisfy the reality condition associated to SU(n). In this article, we explain the method developed jointly with K. Uhlenbeck, that uses various loop group factorizations to construct inverse scattering transforms, Backlund transformations, and solutions to Cauchy problems for these equations.
In this paper, we investigate the relationship between algebraic soliton metrics and soliton metrics for geometric evolution equations on Lie groups. After discussing the general relationship between algebraic soliton metrics and soliton metrics, we investigate the cross curvature flow and the second order renormalization group flow on simply connected three-dimensional unimodular Lie groups, providing a complete classification of left invariant algebraic solitons on such spaces.
We study the geometry of complete generic Ricci solitons with the aid of some geometric-analytical tools extending techniques of the usual Riemannian setting.
In this paper we prove some spectral properties of the drifted Laplacian of self-shrinkers properly immersed in gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Then we use these results to prove some geometric properties of self-shrinkers. For example, we describe a collection of domains in the ambient space that cannot contain self-shrinkers.
This note surveys and compares results on the separation of variables construction for soliton solutions of curvature equations including the Kähler-Ricci flow and the Lagrangian mean curvature flow. In the last section, we propose some new generalizations in the Lagrangian mean curvature flow case.
We develop a general approach to study geometric flows on homogeneous spaces. Our main tool will be a dynamical system defined on the variety of Lie algebras called the bracket flow, which coincides with the original geometric flow after a natural change of variables. The advantage of using this method relies on the fact that the possible pointed (or Cheeger-Gromov) limits of solutions, as well as self-similar solutions or soliton structures, can be much better visualized. The approach has already been worked out in the Ricci flow case and for general curvature flows of almost-hermitian struct…
It is well-known that the LIE(Locally Induction Equation) admit soliton-type solutions and same soliton solutions arise from different and apparently irrelevant physical models. By comparing the solitons of LIE and Killing magnetic geodesics, we observe that these solitons are essentially decided by two families of isometries of the domain and the target space respectively. With this insight, we propose the new concept of geometric solitons of Hamiltonian flows on manifolds, such as geometric Schrödinger flows and KdV flows for maps. Moreover, we give several examples of geometric solitons of …
In this paper we establish three basic equations for a general soliton structure on the Riemannian manifold $(M, <, >)$. We then draw some geometric conclusions with the aid of the maximum principle.
This paper establishes geometric obstructions to the existence of complete, properly embedded, mean curvature flow self-translating solitons $Σ^n\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, generalizing previously known non-existence conditions such as cylindrical boundedness.
We introduce the notion of Canonical Expanding Ricci Soliton, and use it to derive new Harnack inequalities for Ricci flow. This viewpoint also gives geometric insight into the existing Harnack inequalities of Hamilton and Brendle.
The main result of this paper is a convexity estimate for translating solitons of extrinsic geometric flows which evolve under a $1$-homogeneous concave function in the principal curvatures. In addition, we show examples of these hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for particular functions.
The aim of this paper is to prove some classification results for generic shrinking Ricci solitons. In particular, we show that every three dimensional generic shrinking Ricci soliton is given by quotients of either $\mathds{S}^3$, $\erre\times\mathds{S}^2$ or $\erre^3$, under some very weak conditions on the vector field $X$ generating the soliton structure. In doing so we introduce analytical tools that could be useful in other settings; for instance we prove that the Omori-Yau maximum principle holds for the $X$-Laplacian on every generic Ricci soliton, without any assumption on $X$.
We give a survey of the following six closely related topics: (i) a general method for constructing a soliton hierarchy from a splitting of a loop algebra into positive and negative subalgebras, together with a sequence of commuting positive elements, (ii) a method---based on (i)---for constructing soliton hierarchies from a symmetric space, (iii) the dressing action of the negative loop subgroup on the space of solutions of the related soliton equation, (iv) classical Bäcklund, Christoffel, Lie, and Ribaucour transformations for surfaces in three-space and their relation to dressing actions, …
We examine homogeneous solitons of the ambient obstruction flow and, in particular, prove that any compact ambient obstruction soliton with constant scalar curvature is trivial. Focusing on dimension 4, we show that any homogeneous gradient Bach soliton that is steady must be Bach flat, and that the only non-Bach-flat shrinking gradient solitons are product metrics on $\mathbb{R}^2\times S^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^2 \times H^2$. We also construct a non-Bach-flat expanding homogeneous gradient Bach soliton. We also establish a number of results for solitons to the geometric flow by a general tensor $…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the Ricci Yang-Mills soliton equations on nilpotent Lie groups. In the 2-step nilpotent setting, we show that these equations are strictly weaker than the Ricci soliton equations. Using techniques from Geometric Invariant Theory, we develop a procedure to build many different kinds of Ricci Yang-Mills solitons. We finish this note by producing examples of Lie groups that do not admit Ricci soliton metrics but that do admit Ricci Yang-Mills soliton metrics.
We apply the general Ansatz in geometric flows on homogeneous spaces proposed by Jorge Lauret for the Laplacian co-flow of invariant $G_2$-structures on a Lie group, finding an explicit soliton on a particular almost Abelian $7$-manifold.
We give a review of the systematic construction of hierarchies of soliton flows and integrable elliptic equations associated to a complex semi-simple Lie algebra and finite order automorphisms. For example, the non-linear Schrödinger equation, the n-wave equation, and the sigma-model are soliton flows; and the equation for harmonic maps from the plane to a compact Lie group, for primitive maps from the plane to a $k$-symmetric space, and constant mean curvature surfaces and isothermic surfaces in space forms are integrable elliptic systems. We also give a survey of (i) construction of solution…
The geometric flow theory and its applications turned into one of the most intensively developing branches of modern geometry. Here, a brief introduction to Finslerian Ricci flow and their self-similar solutions known as Ricci solitons are given and some recent results are presented. They are a generalization of Einstein metrics and are previously developed by the present authors for Finsler manifolds. In the present work, it is shown that a complete shrinking Ricci soliton Finsler manifold has a finite fundamental group.
Langer and Perline proved that if x is a solution of the geometric Airy curve flow on R^n then there exists a parallel normal frame along x(. ,t) for each t such that the corresponding principal curvatures satisfy the (n-1) component modified KdV (vmKdV_n). They also constructed higher order curve flows whose principal curvatures are solutions of the higher order flows in the vmKdV_n soliton hierarchy. In this paper, we write down a Poisson structure on the space of curves in R^n parametrized by the arc-length, show that the geometric Airy curve flow is Hamiltonian, write down a sequence of co…
We study the evolution of homogeneous Ricci solitons under the bracket flow, a dynamical system on the space of all homogeneous spaces of dimension n with a q-dimensional isotropy, which is equivalent to the Ricci flow for homogeneous manifolds. We prove that algebraic solitons (i.e. the Ricci operator is a multiple of the identity plus a derivation) are precisely the fixed points of the system, and that a homogeneous Ricci soliton is isometric to an algebraic soliton if and only if the corresponding bracket flow solution is not chaotic, in the sense that its omega-limit set consists of a sing…
We prove that a steady gradient Ricci soliton is either Ricci flat with a constant potential function or a quotient of the product steady soliton $N^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}$, where $N^{n-1}$ is Ricci flat, or isometric to the Bryant soliton (up to scalings), provided that a couple of geometric conditions inspired by the cigar soliton hold. As an application, we prove that any complete non-compact steady Ricci soliton with positive Ricci curvature controlled by the scalar curvature $R$, curvature tensor $Rm$ satisfying $|Rm|r\to o(1)$ and $R\to\infty$, as $r\to\infty$, must be the Bryant soliton.…
We study invariant solutions to the Positive Hermitian Curvature Flow, introduced by Ustinovskiy, on complex Lie groups. We show in particular that the canonical scale-static metrics on the special linear groups, arising from the Killing form, are dynamically unstable. This disproves a conjecture of Ustinovskiy. We also construct certain perfect Lie groups that admit at least two distinct invariant solitons for the flow, only one of which is algebraic. This is the second known example of a geometric flow with non-algebraic, homogeneous solitons. The first being the G2-Laplacian flow.
Methods from the geometry of nonholonomic manifolds and Lagrange-Finsler spaces are applied in fractional calculus with Caputo derivatives and for elaborating models of fractional gravity and fractional Lagrange mechanics. The geometric data for such models are encoded into (fractional) bi-Hamiltonian structures and associated solitonic hierarchies. The constructions yield horizontal/vertical pairs of fractional vector sine-Gordon equations and fractional vector mKdV equations when the hierarchies for corresponding curve fractional flows are described in explicit forms by fractional wave maps …
Universal bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies of group-invariant (multicomponent) soliton equations are derived from non-stretching geometric curve flows $\map(t,x)$ in Riemannian symmetric spaces $M=G/H$, including compact semisimple Lie groups $M=K$ for $G=K\times K$, $H={\rm diag} G$. The derivation of these soliton hierarchies utilizes a moving parallel frame and connection 1-form along the curve flows, related to the Klein geometry of the Lie group $G\supset H$ where $H$ is the local frame structure group. The soliton equations arise in explicit form from the induced flow on the frame components o…
In this paper, we prove that any two birational projective varieties with finite quotient singularities can be realized as two geometric GIT quotients of a non-singular projective variety by a reductive algebraic group. Then, by applying the theory of Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients ([3]), we show that they are related by a sequence of GIT wall-crossing flips.
The geometric constructions are elaborated on (semi) Riemannian manifolds and vector bundles provided with nonintegrable distributions defining nonlinear connection structures induced canonically by metric tensors. Such spaces are called nonholonomic manifolds and described by two equivalent linear connections also induced in unique forms by a metric tensor (the Levi Civita and the canonical distinguished connection, d-connection). The lifts of geometric objects on tangent bundles are performed for certain classes of d-connections and frame transforms when the Riemann tensor is parametrized by…
We investigate bi-Hamiltonian structures and mKdV hierarchies of solitonic equations generated by (semi) Riemannian metrics and curve flows of non-stretching curves. There are applied methods of the geometry of nonholonomic manifolds enabled with metric-induced nonlinear connection (N-connection) structure. On spacetime manifolds, we consider a nonholonomic splitting of dimensions and define a new class of liner connections which are 'N-adapted', metric compatible and uniquely defined by the metric structure. We prove that for such a linear connection, one yields couples of generalized sine-Go…
A geometric analysis of protein folding, which complements many of the models in the literature, is presented. We examine the process from unfolded strand to the point where the strand becomes self-interacting. A central question is how it is possible that so many initial configurations proceed to fold to a unique final configuration. We put energy and dynamical considerations temporarily aside and focus upon the geometry alone. We parameterize the structure of an idealized protein using the concept of a ribbon from differential geometry. The deformation of the ribbon is described by introduci…
Motion of curves and surfaces in $\R^3$ lead to nonlinear evolution equations which are often integrable. They are also intimately connected to the dynamics of spin chains in the continuum limit and integrable soliton systems through geometric and gauge symmetric connections/equivalence. Here we point out the fact that a more general situation in which the curves evolve in the presence of additional self consistent vector potentials can lead to interesting generalized spin systems with self consistent potentials or soliton equations with self consistent potentials. We obtain the general form o…
Methods in Riemann-Finsler geometry are applied to investigate bi-Hamiltonian structures and related mKdV hierarchies of soliton equations derived geometrically from regular Lagrangians and flows of non-stretching curves in tangent bundles. The total space geometry and nonholonomic flows of curves are defined by Lagrangian semisprays inducing canonical nonlinear connections (N-connections), Sasaki type metrics and linear connections. The simplest examples of such geometries are given by tangent bundles on Riemannian symmetric spaces $G/SO(n)$ provided with an N-connection structure and an adap…
