To each totally disconnected, locally compact topological group G and each group A of automorphisms of G, a pseudo-metric space of ``directions'' has been associated by U. Baumgartner and the second author. Given a Lie group G over a local field, it is a natural idea to try to define a map from the space of directions of analytic automorphisms of G to the space of directions of automorphisms of the Lie algebra L(G) of G, which takes the direction of an analytic automorphism of G to the direction of the associated Lie algebra automorphism. We show that, in general, this map is not well-defined. However, the pathology cannot occur for a large class of linear algebraic groups (called ``generalized Cayley groups'' here). For such groups, the assignment just proposed defines a well-defined isometric embedding from the space of directions of inner automorphisms of G to the space of directions of automorphisms of L(G). Some counterexamples concerning the existence of small joint tidy subgroups for flat groups of automorphisms are also provided.
For a positive integer $n$, with $n \geq 4$, let $R_{n}$ be a free (nilpotent of class 2)-by-abelian and abelian-by-(nilpotent of class 2) Lie algebra of rank $n$. We show that the subgroup of Aut$(R_{n})$ generated by the tame automorphisms and a countably infinite set of explicitly given automorphisms of $R_{n}$ is dense in Aut$(R_{n})$ with respect to the formal power series topology.
This is an expository article on properties of actions on Lie groups by subgroups of their automorphism groups. After recalling various results on the structure of the automorphism groups, we discuss actions with dense orbits, invariant and quasi-invariant measures, the induced actions on the spaces of probability measures on the groups, and results concerning various issues in ergodic theory, topological dynamics, smooth dynamical systems, and probability theory on Lie groups.
We generalize the common notion of descending and ascending central series. The descending approach determines a naturally graded Lie ring and the ascending version determines a graded module for this ring. We also link derivations of these rings to the automorphisms of a group. This uncovers new structure in 4/5 of the approximately 11.8 million groups of size at most 1000 and beyond that point pertains to at least a positive logarithmic proportion of all finite groups.
By calculating the symmetric subgroups $\Aut(\fru_0)^θ$ and their involution classes, we classify the Klein four subgroups $Γ$ of $\Aut(\fru_0)$ for each compact simple Lie algebra $\fru_0$ up to conjugation. This leads to a new approach of classification of semisimple symmetric pairs and $\bbZ_2\times \bbZ_2$-symmetric spaces. We also determine the fixed point subgroup $\Aut(\fru_0)^Γ$.
Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits an automorphism $φ$ of order $2^n$ such that the fixed-point subgroup $C_G(φ^{2^{n-1}})$ of the involution $φ^{2^{n-1}}$ is nilpotent of class $c$. Let $m=|C_G(φ)|$ be the number of fixed points of $φ$. It is proved that $G$ has a characteristic soluble subgroup of derived length bounded in terms of $n,c$ whose index is bounded in terms of $m,n,c$. A similar result is also proved for Lie rings.
A connected Lie group admitting an expansive automorphism is known to be nilpotent, but all nilpotent Lie groups do not admit expansive automorphism. In this article, we find sufficient conditions for a class of nilpotent Lie groups to admit expansive automorphism.
In this thesis I study the automorphism tower of free nilpotent groups. Our main tool in studying the automorphism tower is to embed every group as a lattice in some Lie group. Using known rigidity results the automorphism group of the discrete group can be embedded into the automorphism group of the Lie group. This allows me to lift the description of the derivation tower of the free nilpotent Lie algebra to obtain information about the automorphism tower of the free nilpotent group. The main result in this thesis states that the automorphism tower of the free nilpotent group $Γ(n,d)$ on $n$ …
We introduce the concept of a double automorphism of an A-graded Lie algebra L. Roughly, this is an automorphism of L which also induces an automorphism of the group A. It is clear that the set of all double automorphisms of L forms a subgroup in Aut(L). In the present paper we prove several nilpotency criteria for a graded Lie algebra admitting a finite group of double automorphisms. We also give an application of our results to groups admitting a Frobenius group of automorphisms.
We give a detailed description of the algebraic group Aut(g) of automorphisms of a simple finite dimensional Lie superalgebra g over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0. We also give a description of the group of automorphisms of the k-Lie superalgebra $g \otimes_k R$ whenever R is a Noetherian domain with trivial Picard group.
Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms FH of coprime order with cyclic kernel F and complement H such that the fixed point subgroup $C_G(H)$ of the complement is nilpotent of class $c$. It is proved that $G$ has a nilpotent characteristic subgroup of index bounded in terms of $c$, $|C_G(F)|$, and $|FH|$ whose nilpotency class is bounded in terms of $c$ and $|H|$ only. This generalizes the previous theorem of the authors and P. Shumyatsky, where for the case of $C_G(F)=1$ the whole group was proved to be nilpotent of $(c,|H|)$-bounded class. Examples show that…
We describe the structure of the algebraic group of automorphisms of all simple finite dimensional Lie superalgebras. Using this and étale cohomology considerations, we list all different isomorphism classes of the corresponding twisted loop superalgebras.

In the present work we investigate a subgroup $I_n$ of the McCool group $M_n$. We show that $I_n$ has solvable conjugacy problem. Next, we investigate its Lie Algebra gr($I_n$) and we find a presentation for it. Finally we show that gr($I_n$) is naturally embedded into the Andreadakis-Johnson Lie Algebra of the IA automorphisms of the free group $F_n$.
We describe finite-dimensional smooth Lie groups over local fields of positive characteristic which do not admit an analytic Lie group structure compatible with the given topological group structure, and C^n-Lie groups without a compatible C^{n+1}-Lie group structure, for each positive integer n. We also present examples of non-analytic, smooth automorphisms of Lie groups over such fields, as well as C^n-automorphisms which fail to be C^{n+1}.
We determine normal forms of the multiplication of four-dimensional anti-commutative algebras over a field $\mathbb K$ of characteristic zero having an analogous family of flags of subalgebras as the four-dimensional non-Lie binary Lie algebras, and hence can be considered as the closest relatives of binary Lie algebras. These algebras are extensions of $\mathbb K$ by the 3-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra and at the same time extensions of a two-dimensional Lie algebra by a two-dimensional abelian algebra. We describe their groups of automorphisms as extensions of a subgroup of the group of …
For a finite group G of Lie type and a prime p, we compare the automorphism groups of the fusion and linking systems of G at p with the automorphism group of G itself. When p is the defining characteristic of G, they are all isomorphic, with a very short list of exceptions. When p is different from the defining characteristic, the situation is much more complex, but can always be reduced to a case where the natural map from Out(G) to outer automorphisms of the fusion or linking system is split surjective. This work is motivated in part by questions involving extending the local structure of a …
We consider left-invariant distances $d$ on a Lie group $G$ with the property that there exists a multiplicative one-parameter group of Lie automorphisms $(0, \infty)\rightarrow\mathtt{Aut}(G)$, $λ\mapstoδ_λ$, so that $ d(δ_λx,δ_λy) = λd(x,y)$, for all $x,y\in G$ and all $λ>0$. First, we show that all such distances are admissible, that is, they induce the manifold topology. Second, we characterize multiplicative one-parameter groups of Lie automorphisms that are dilations for some left-invariant distance in terms of algebraic properties of their infinitesimal generator. Third, we show that an…
Let F_n = <x_1,...,x_n> denote the free group with generators {x_1,...,x_n}. Nielsen and Magnus described generators for the kernel of the canonical epimorphism from the automorphism group of F_n to the general linear group over the integers. In particular among them are the automorphisms chi_{k,i} which conjugate the generator x_k by the generator x_i leaving the x_j fixed for j not k. A computation of the cohomology ring as well as the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series of the group generated by chi_{k,i} for i<k is given here. Partial results are obtained for the group …
We prove that the family of all connected n-dimensional real Lie groups is uniformly Jordan for every n. This implies that all algebraic groups (not necessarily affine) over fields of characteristic zero and some transformation groups of complex spaces and Riemannian manifods are Jordan.
Let G be a Lie group over a local field of positive characteristic which admits a contractive automorphism f (i.e., the forward iterates f^n(x) of each group element x converge to the neutral element 1). We show that then G is a torsion group of finite exponent and nilpotent. We also obtain results concerning the interplay between contractive automorphisms of Lie groups over local fields, contractive automorphisms of their Lie algebras, and positive gradations thereon. Some of the results even extend to Lie groups over arbitrary complete ultrametric fields.
Let G be a Lie group, $T^*G$ its cotangent bundle with its natural Lie group structure obtained by performing a left trivialization of T^*G and endowing the resulting trivial bundle with the semi-direct product, using the coadjoint action of G on the dual space of its Lie algebra. We investigate the group of automorphisms of the Lie algebra of $T^*G$. More precisely, amongst other results, we fully characterize the space of all derivations of the Lie algebra of $T^*G$. As a byproduct, we also characterize some spaces of operators on G amongst which, the space J of bi-invariant tensors on G and…
Suppose that a finite group $G$ admits a Frobenius group of automorphisms $FH$ with kernel $F$ and complement $H$ such that the fixed-point subgroup of $F$ is trivial: $C_G(F)=1$. In this situation various properties of $G$ are shown to be close to the corresponding properties of $C_G(H)$. By using Clifford's theorem it is proved that the order $|G|$ is bounded in terms of $|H|$ and $|C_G(H)|$, the rank of $G$ is bounded in terms of $|H|$ and the rank of $C_G(H)$, and that $G$ is nilpotent if $C_G(H)$ is nilpotent. Lie ring methods are used for bounding the exponent and the nilpotency class of…
We describe a set of defining relations for automorphism groups of finitely generated free algebras of Nielsen-Schreier varieties. In particular, this gives a representation of the automorphism groups of free Lie algebras by generators and defining relations.
We determine the groups of automorphisms and their orbits for nilpotent Lie algebras of class 2 and small dimension, over arbitrary fields (including the characteristic 2 case).
We describe the automorphism groups of all holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ with non-trivial weight one Lie algebras by using their constructions as simple current extensions. We also confirm a conjecture of G. Höhn on the numbers of holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ obtained as inequivalent simple current extensions of certain vertex operator algebras, which gives another proof of the uniqueness of holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge $24$ with non-trivial weight one Lie algebras.
We investigate the action of outer automorphisms of finite groups of Lie type on their irreducible characters. We obtain a definite result for cuspidal characters. As an application we verify the inductive McKay condition for some further infinite families of simple groups at certain primes.
We prove a theorem that gives a sufficient condition for the full basic automorphism group of a complete Cartan foliation to admit a unique (finite-dimensional) Lie group structure in the category of Cartan foliations. Emphasize that the transverse Cartan geometry may not be effective. Some estimates of the dimension of this group depending on the transverse geometry are found. Further, we investigate Cartan foliations covered by fibrations. When the global holonomy group of that foliation is discrete, we obtain the explicit new formula for determining its basic automorphism Lie group. Example…
In this paper we describe how one can obtain Lie group structures on the group of (vertical) bundle automorphisms for a locally convex principal bundle P over the compact manifold M. This is done by first considering Lie group structures on the group of vertical bundle automorphisms Gau(P). Then the full automorphism group Aut(P) is considered as an extension of the open subgroup Diff(M)_P of diffeomorphisms of M preserving the equivalence class of P under pull-backs, by the gauge group Gau(P). We derive explicit conditions for the extensions of these Lie group structures, show the smoothness …
