We describe finite-dimensional smooth Lie groups over local fields of positive characteristic which do not admit an analytic Lie group structure compatible with the given topological group structure, and C^n-Lie groups without a compatible C^{n+1}-Lie group structure, for each positive integer n. We also present examples of non-analytic, smooth automorphisms of Lie groups over such fields, as well as C^n-automorphisms which fail to be C^{n+1}.
A pro-Lie group is a projective limit of a family of finite-dimensional Lie groups. In this note we show that a pro-Lie group $G$ is a Lie group in the sense that its topology is compatible with a smooth manifold structure for which the group operations are smooth if and only if $G$ is locally contractible. We also characterize the corresponding pro-Lie algebras in various ways. Furthermore, we characterize those pro-Lie groups which are locally exponential, that is, they are Lie groups with a smooth exponential function which maps a zero neighborhood in the Lie algebra diffeomorphically onto …
In the present paper we study abelian extensions of connected Lie groups $G$ modeled on locally convex spaces by smooth $G$-modules $A$. We parametrize the extension classes by a suitable cohomology group $H^2_s(G,A)$ defined by locally smooth cochains and construct an exact sequence that describes the difference between $H^2_s(G,A)$ and the corresponding continuous Lie algebra cohomology space $H^2_c(\g,\a)$. The obstructions for the integrability of a Lie algebra extensions to a Lie group extension are described in terms of period and flux homomorphisms. We also characterize the extensions w…
It is an open problem whether every continuous homomorphism between infinite-dimensional Lie groups is smooth. In this article, we show that every Hoelder continuous homomorphism is smooth.
Let G be a regular Lie group which is a directed union of regular Lie groups G_i (all modelled on possibly infinite-dimensional, locally convex spaces). We show that G is the direct limit of the G_i as a regular Lie group whenever G admits a so-called direct limit chart. Notably, this allows the regular Lie group Diff_c(M) of compactly supported smooth diffeomorphisms to be interpreted as a direct limit of the regular Lie groups Diff_K(M) of smooth diffeomorphisms supported in compact subsets K of M, even if the finite-dimensional smooth manifold M is merely paracompact (but not necessarily si…
By Cartan's Theorem, every closed subgroup $H$ of a real (or $p$-adic) Lie group $G$ is a Lie subgroup. For Lie groups over a local field ${\mathbb K}$ of positive characteristic, the analogous conclusion is known to be wrong. We show more: There exists a ${\mathbb K}$-analytic Lie group $G$ and a non-discrete, compact subgroup $H$ such that, for every ${\mathbb K}$-analytic manifold $M$, every ${\mathbb K}$-analytic map $f\colon M\to G$ with $f(M)\subseteq H$ is locally constant. In particular, the set $H$ does not admit a non-discrete ${\mathbb K}$-analytic manifold structure which makes the…
Let $X$ be a closed smooth manifold, $G$ be a simple connected compact real Lie group, $M (G)$ be the group of all smooth maps from $X$ to $G$, and $M_0 (G)$ be its connected component for the $\mathcal C^\infty$-compact open topology. It is shown that maximal normal subgroups of $M_0 (G)$ are precisely the inverse images of the centre $Z(G)$ of $G$ by the evaluation homomorphisms $M_0 (G) \to G, \hskip.1cm γ\mapsto γ(a)$, for $a \in X$. This in turn is a consequence of a result on the group $\mathcal C^\infty_{n, G}$ of germs at the origin $O$ of $\mathbf R^n$ of smooth maps $\mathbf R^n \to …
In this paper we study non-abelian extensions of a Lie group $G$ modeled on a locally convex space by a Lie group $N$. The equivalence classes of such extension are grouped into those corresponding to a class of so-called smooth outer actions $S$ of $G$ on $N$. If $S$ is given, we show that the corresponding set $\Ext(G,N)_S$ of extension classes is a principal homogeneous space of the locally smooth cohomology group $H^2_{ss}(G,Z(N))_S$. To each $S$ a locally smooth obstruction class $χ(S)$ in a suitably defined cohomology group $H^3_{ss}(G,Z(N))_S$ is defined. It vanishes if and only if ther…
Any Lie group G acting on a Euclidean nonvoid open subset M can be seen as a subgroup of the smooth diffeomorphisms Diff^\infty(M,M) of M into itself. Thus actions by such Lie groups G correspond to smooth coordinate transforms on M which, in particular, have smooth inverses. In Rosinger [1, chap. 13], the study of Lie semigroups G in the vastly larger semigroup C^\infty(M,M) of smooth maps of M into itself was initiated. Such semigroups were named "genuine Lie semigroups", or in short, GLS, since they are no longer contained in Diff^\infty(M,M), thus they correspond to smooth coordinate trans…
The present paper links the representation theory of Lie groupoids and infinite-dimensional Lie groups. We show that smooth representations of Lie groupoids give rise to smooth representations of associated Lie groups. The groups envisaged here are the bisection group and a group of groupoid self maps. Then representations of the Lie groupoids give rise to representations of the infinite-dimensional Lie groups on spaces of (compactly supported) bundle sections. Endowing the spaces of bundle sections with a fine Whitney type topology, the fine very strong topology, we even obtain continuous and…
Let G be a Lie group which is the union of an ascending sequence of Lie groups G_n (all of which may be infinite-dimensional). We study the question when G is the direct limit of the G_n's in the category of Lie groups, topological groups, smooth manifolds, resp., topological spaces. Full answers are obtained for G the group Diff_c(M) of compactly supported smooth diffeomorphisms of a sigma-compact smooth manifold M, and for test function groups C^infty_c(M,H) of compactly supported smooth maps with values in a finite-dimensional Lie group H. We also discuss the cases where G is a direct limit…
We construct a smooth Lie group structure on the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms of a compact analytic manifold with corners. This generalises the known analogous results in the situation where the real analytic manifold has no corners. Additionally our approach uses a different construction.
We provide results on the smoothness of normalisers in connected reductive algebraic groups $G$ over fields $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. Specifically we we give bounds on $p$ which guarantee that normalisers of subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$ in $G$ are smooth, i.e.\ so that the Lie algebras of these normalisers coincide with the infinitesimal normalisers. One of our main tools is to exploit cohomology vanishing of small dimensional modules. Along the way, we obtain complete reducibility results for small dimensional modules in the spirit of similar results due to Jantzen, Guralnick, Serr…
By using commutator methods, we show uniform resolvent estimates and obtain globally smooth operators for self-adjoint injective homogeneous operators $H$ on graded groups, including Rockland operators, sublaplacians and many others. Left or right invariance is not required. Typically the globally smooth operator has the form $T=V|H|^{1/2}$, where $V$ only depends on the homogeneous structure of the group through Sobolev spaces, the homogeneous dimension and the minimal and maximal dilation weights. For stratified groups improvements are obtained, by using a Hardy-type inequality. Some of the …
We give a sufficient criterion for complex analyticity of nonlinear maps defined on direct limits of normed spaces. This tool is then used to construct new classes of (real and complex) infinite dimensional Lie groups: (a) groups of germs of analytic diffeomorphisms around a compact set in a Banach space and (b) unions of ascending sequences of Banach Lie groups.
We construct an infinite dimensional real analytic manifold structure for the space of real analytic mappings from a compact manifold to a locally convex manifold. Here a map is real analytic if it extends to a holomorphic map on some neighbourhood of the complexification of its domain. As is well known the construction turns the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms into a smooth locally convex Lie group. We prove then that the diffeomorphism group is regular in the sense of Milnor. In the inequivalent "convenient setting of calculus" the real analytic diffeomorphisms even form a real analyt…
Let $G$ be a Lie group of dimension $n$, and let $A(G)$ be the Fourier algebra of $G$. We show that the anti-diagonal $\checkΔ_G=\{(g,g^{-1})\in G\times G \mid g\in G\}$ is both a set of local smooth synthesis and a set of local weak synthesis of degree at most $[\frac{n}{2}]+1$ for $A(G\times G)$. We achieve this by using the concept of the cone property in \cite{ludwig-turowska}. For compact $G$, we give an alternative approach to demonstrate the preceding results by applying the ideas developed in \cite{forrest-samei-spronk}. We also present similar results for sets of the form $HK$, where …
The main result of this work is a new proof and generalization of Lazard's comparison theorem of locally analytic group cohomology with Lie algebra cohomology for K-Lie groups, where K is a finite extension of the p-adic numbers. We show the following theorem: Let K be a finite extension of the p-adic numbers and let G be a K-Lie group. Then there exists an open subgroup U of G such that the Lazard morphism, which is induced by differentiating cochains, is an isomorphism. The proof of this theorem is independent of the proof of Lazard's comparison result. Our strategy to prove the comparison i…
In this paper we study the Lie theoretic properties of a class of topological groups which carry a Banach manifold structure but whose multiplication is not smooth. If $G$ and $N$ are Banach-Lie groups and $π: G \to \mathrm{Aut}(N)$ is a homomorphism defining a continuous action of $G$ on $N$, then $H := N \rtimes_πG$ is a Banach manifold with a topological group structure for which the left multiplication maps are smooth, but the right multiplication maps need not to be. We show that these groups share surprisingly many properties with Banach-Lie groups: (a) for every regulated function $ξ: […
For a lattice $Γ$ of a simply connected solvable Lie group $G$, we describe the analytic germ in the variety of representations of $Γ$ at the trivial representation as an analytic germ which is linearly embedded in the analytic germ associated with the nilpotent Lie algebra determined by $G$. By this description, under certain assumption, we study the singularity of the analytic germ in the variety of representations of $Γ$ at the trivial representation by using the Kuranishi space construction. By a similar technique, we also study deformations of holomorphic structures of trivial vector bund…
